I spent the morning with the Dreamland Tonight crew, filming a fight scene between professional wrestler Bash Boulder and Puppet Mark in Ypsilanti’s now-flooded Riverside Park. I don’t want to give too much away, but I think the finished product, which involves bloody entrails, is going to be pretty incredible. The idea, as of right now, is to show this fight footage right at the beginning, before the mayoral debate, which will be the centerpiece of our June 18 show. (As you’ll recall, episode three of Dreamland Tonight ended with Puppet Mark and Bash Boulder agreeing to battle one another.) Anyway, it should be cool. And, hopefully, the bloody wrestling match won’t set the tone for the debate to follow.
As for the big show on the 18th, we’ll also have musical guest Charlie Slick with us. And, unlike usual, you won’t need to purchase a ticket. This time, instead of charging $7 at the door, we’re just asking for donations. So, it’ll likely be really crowded. If you can, I’d get there early. Doors will open at 7:15, and the show will start at 8:00. And, for all of you who can’t get in, we’ll try to get the episode up online as soon as possible, and on Community Access Television.
And, it’s probably worth noting, I had mixed feelings about posting this video. On one hand, I think it kind of kills the illusion that we try so hard to maintain, that Puppet Mark is a real independent entity, but, on the other, I think it’s important for people to see how much work goes on behind the scenes. Andy, who is working Puppet Mark in this clip, occasionally gets out in front of the crowd, but Naia, who typically brings Puppet Mark to life, and Carrie, who directs most of our video segments, never really get the acknowledgement they deserve. So, here they are, doing what they do so well.

With the river so high and Bash with no shirt, and that thing tied around his head, it was like Apocalypse Now. Hopefully the vibe comes through on the video.
Hold on a second. Are you telling me that the puppet and Bash Boulder aren’t really sworn enemies. It’s all a setup?

It really is shaping up to be a great show. I just wish that the Dreamland was bigger, as I know we’ll have to turn people away.
Any word on whether or not the mayor is matching Murdoch’s $250 donation challenge?
I appreciated the offer, but, as I’ve told both Pete and Paul, I don’t think it’s necessary. We’ll accept donations at the door, and I’m sure we’ll make enough to keep the electricity on for the night.
Maybe the folks at the Vu would let you have this show over there, since there is more room and all. Though I suppose the best solution would be to have it at Riverside Center. Some one out there reading this has got to be able to make one of those two things happen.
As much as I like the idea of going to a bigger venue, I’m afraid that, at least as of right now, moving our set isn’t feasible. And, I don’t know that Pete and Paul would want to debate on the stage of the Vu. Being interviewed by a puppet is one thing, being on stage at a strip club is another.
