yspi food bulletin: beezy’s is now open on washington street

Join us in welcoming a new restaurant to downtown Ypsilanti. As of 7:00 this morning, the much anticipated Beezy’s Cafe is now open. I’ve heard two reports so far, and both have been glowing. The sign out front promises “Simple, Honest Food,” and I’m told that’s just what Bee, the recently liberated Zingerman’s employ behind the enterprise, delivers.

If you’ve already been, please leave a comment, and let me know what’s good. And, if you haven’t, please stop in and welcome Bee to the neighborhood with a few of your hard-earned bucks.

I wanted to post a PDF of the menu here, but I’m told that, by the time Linette got there, they were all gone. (I take that as a pretty good sign.) So, in lieu of a menu, I’ll just offer this blurb from the website:

…scrambled egg wraps, old fashioned thick cut oats for oatmeal and housemade granola, the best banana bread on the planet, fresh fruit, soups made daily from scratch, fresh salads, sandwiches with dense, soft bread baked on site, real food for kids (and blown ups*, too) and an array of delightful beverages ranging from real fruit & yogurt smoothies to loose leaf tea, coffee and espresso beverages prepared with Intelligentsia Roaster’s world class beans. Vegans and vegetarians, I’ve got your number- but be prepared for olfactory tendrils of bacon wafting through the dining room…

As I don’t have room for the footnote here, you’ll have to ask Bee about the “blown ups” when you stop in.

Oh, and if you’re a regular reader of this site, you’ll remember Bee, as an occasional leaver of comments here.

    wow, what a day!

that menu blurb had summer in mind :D

lots of great stuff coming in the next weeks, months, years (decades, I hope)

really shot from the hip opening Monday- if you saw the place at 1 am you’d never have believed the transformation. And recovering perfectionist that I am, well, it’s okay that there’s still painter’s tape up and unfinished trim- the building inspector signed off Friday afternoon, I had a walk in full of food and voila, open Monday. (Painfully!)

Thanks to you readers out there who came by, and I’m very very happy to report that the Chicksilanti sandwich was by far the most popular of the day…

also, the menus in circulation are scarce simply because 83% of them have the wrong prices or descriptions, so I haven’t taken them to ‘press’ yet. You know, basically making shit up as I go.

if you sign up for a beeza rewards card, you’ll get the secret of the ‘blown up’. Really, it’s free AND you get to be a card carrying member that adds up 10% of every purchase toward beeza bucks. (rhymes with visa)

If I sound like a late night infomercial, it’s cos I’ve been awake since 6:30 am. Sunday. wheee!

going to bed soon, see you tomorrow. and thanks mark and linette for the photo op :D

I’ll make the edit about Sundays.

    Now get some rest.

And congratulations again, Bee. I’m proud of you.

We are excited about a new shop opening downtown. We can’t wait to visit, try the menu, and become “card carrying members!” Thanks in advance for opening your restaurant downtown.

At last, Ypsi has an answer to the mighty Zingermans!

  9. Posted November 11, 2008 at 8:44 pm | Permalink

wow, thanks- though to put me in the same context as zingerman’s is quite a stretch! (other than as a former employee!)

Sherri! I’m glad you liked everything!

If anyone else out there reads this who came by today- and well, for future days, I’m really amazed at your patience with us! thank you!

    see you soon!

I caught word that Beezy’s was open for business so my boy Dak and I couldn’t resist a quick visit. The Roast Chicken Club was excellent. An artful combination of flavor on some delicious sourdough bread. Bee knows goodness!
With convenient (free) parking in the rear, this place will be on my list of regular haunts.
I am looking forward to trying the Cheesy Pumpkin Soup.

There is definitely the feel of a ‘work in progress’ on their second day but sometimes you know a masterpiece is on the way after a few brushstrokes.

Ypsilanti has received a gift. Thank you.

W00T! Beezy’s is amazing, the food is exactly what is promised, simple, honest and really damned good. The coffee is just as tasty as the food, and the delightful mix of personalities that you find while there… rock on! This is just what Ypsi has needed for so long. Welcome home Bee!

Beezy’s Beezy’s Beezy’s It is hard to think of my experiances there and not have a comfortable and community feeling. I am so impressed with how gracefull the team worked together. It’s so refreshing to have nutritious foods that explode with welcomed flavor right in the neighborhood. Rock on, can’t wait to be there again!

OK, where’s the coupon. I used my Cafe Luwak one. Now I need another.

Sitting at Beezy’s right now enjoying the corn chowder, and the chicksilanti sandwich, and the mocha. everything was delicious. The decor is great (though unfinished), and I’m excited to have a place like this downtown.

I’ll also take this opportunity to plug a new blog I’ve thrown together called Change the Vu (link above). Has nothing to do with Beezy’s other than being on the same street, but I hope to get some dialogue started about the Deja Vu stripclub and how to get ypsi a downtown movie theater in it’s place. Stop by and let me know what you think.

You have no idea how hard many of us in the community worked to turn that theater into a strip club. You mock our efforts with this plan of yours. This is exactly how Time Square became Disnified. We should be asking ourselves, what other “family friendly” venues can we transform. Why not work to turn the downtown library into a brothel?

  20. Posted November 13, 2008 at 3:02 pm | Permalink

What happened to all the talk of the power of small business? The Vu provides plenty of working opportunities for local folks and should be lauded, not closed down.

  21. Posted November 13, 2008 at 8:28 pm | Permalink

funny too, cos well, the chicksilanti sandwich is dedicated to the Vu. Though I have yet to meet them, I think it’s really important to accept that reality. And the sandwich, while advertised topless, can absolutely be made with the top for those who don’t wish to support that tongue in cheek gesture of acceptance.

applejack- did I meet you today? what a day! lots of people and lots of great comments, thanks for stopping by. I am in total agreement that we need a theater downtown… and several other things too, but we’ll get there!

thanks to you all for leaving such lovely and supportive comments. It’s unbelievable. Especially considering how unfinished so much is- I can see everyone seeing the potential and it’s terrifically inspiring.

    thank you so much.

Speaking of meat markets, I’m a little bit embarassed to ask Bee, but do you have anything for us low-carb dieters on the menu? It’s hard for us to eat out because everything is always so carboliscious!

  23. Posted November 13, 2008 at 11:27 pm | Permalink

    low carb:
often, soup (just ask- there’s usually a reserve I plan for special eaters)
chicken, tuna or egg salad on a bed of lettuce
a salad with a vinaigrette (though most of them use a sugar)
    roast chicken, chilled and sliced
breakfast plate minus the potatoes and toast (ask for cheese, it’s the rosewood organic, yum! or for an extra slice of applewood smoked bacon)
    um…
    coffee!
    …few ideas anyway!

I’d email you, but the function doesn’t work. But you should also eat carbs. Just sayin’.

I’ll be working a lot over the next few weeks to put together a gluten free & vegan &/or low carb sub menu…. keep suggestions coming and I’ll keep producing new stuff for ya.

A trio of us just ate at Beezy’s–yum!

The avocado veggie sandwiches are grand, and the egg salad, too. Pumpkin spice cupcakes are the bee’s knees, nyuck, nyuck ;)

I have no idea how to spell nyuck.

Both the food and the people are fresh! THANK YOU AND BEST OF LUCK!

The pepper and egg sandwich was great, even at lunchtime, and my wife loved the tomato & herb soup and her chickslianti sandwich. Glad you are in Ypsi!!

I’m so glad you’re glad I’m in Ypsi. I’m really honored by the support!

Next Saturday I’ll have sausage gravy & biscuits and tofu scramble.

Today was a great breakfast day! Amanda from Growing Hope started her journey to the Detroit Urban Craft Fair with some thick rolled organic oats while busily cutting cards for her booth… I met Mark from terry Bakery and we talked yummies and about the lack of good bagels in Ypsi (somebody, please, do this!) and then he dropped by some herbs (that I turned into a bouquet) and later still some delightful samples of his pumpkin cranberry bars… and then Mark Linette stopped in, and Murph, and if I name everyone I’ll leave someone out, but.. ultimately what I’m getting at is, WOW. We had over 70 covers today. Not bad for a day with little foot traffic, and a biblical weather day.

What a sense of community I already feel- early in the day we met Stu the little drummer boy, all of 3, and I asked Sami to dust off the box of toys to show him; next thing I know, she’s asking for the hammer so she can hang a height marker and later still, she was sitting and reading to Stu. ‘Everyone Poops’ I think.

and all morning I had the blessing of serving food and seeing smiles and empty plates. Amazing that between composting, reserving scraps for soup and sauces and using very very very little disposable stuff, we generate less than one 20 gallon bag of trash… even the potato cooking water gets folded into soup or the next batch of homefries… lots of little stuff is coming together, and we have some fun stuff in store, big batch of blown up kids that we are.

much love, Ypsi, thanks for taking me in!!!

    Bummer about Sundays.

  29. I can die now...
    Posted November 24, 2008 at 10:51 pm | Permalink

… No, not because of Beezy’s, but because last Friday morning, we (my wife and I) went to Beezy’s after signing our wills and our health care declarations (we’re having ’em pull the plug; no extreme measures; no Jesus saving us; and we now know that our dog, should we die prematurely, will go to the people we want her to go to).

So, back to Beezy’s: yes, please, do check it out if you haven’t. We had wanted to go on Sunday, but as you know if you’ve read the comments thus far, no Sundays yet.

We got there around 10 on Friday. A few couples at tables in the main cafe area. Very warm feeling inside. Lots of people behind the counter (Beezy: you employ all of these folks, or are some of them friends lending a hand hoping/helping you succeed?).

My wife ordered the breakfast burrito. Me only the everything bagel (had already eaten the Honey Nut earlier). The bagel was good. The coffee: really good. My wife’s breakfast burrito (of which I had a bite): delicious. The chorizo was wonderful.

So, yes, do frequent Beezy’s. Beezy and the other folk behind the counter were great, too. I told ’em it was the MM blog post that brought us there. We’re hoping for the MM coupon.

Oh, and you have to go to see the fiber optic severed head unicorn they have in the bathroom.

(okay, really, no severed-head FO unicorn. but wouldn’t that be cool?)
