Safety Girl is back…. kind of

Does anyone remember, back in the late 90’s, a super-freaky, sex-positive Ann Arbor community access television show called Get Curious with Safety Girl? (I looked for video clips online, but couldn’t find any. Sorry.) Well, it looks like she – or at least the woman behind the Safety Girl persona – is planning a comeback. According to this blog that I just stumbled across, Tanya Brown is about to launch a new Ypsi-positive community access television show as Ypsi Girl tomorrow night. Here’s how she describes it.

…For those of you who remember my past alias- she is retired… do not expect that hot young 20 something educating you on how to apply a condom with your mouth on a banana. lol

But you can expect my candidness, honesty, personal crap to come out over the air waves, and promoting the best of our local flavors- shops, music, night life… and the breath taking bohemian style characters who make ypsi a beautiful place to live and visit.

According to Brown, the show will begin airing tomorrow (Thursday) on Ann Arbor Community Access channel 17 at 7:00pm and 10:25pm.

Sounds from her site like she’s been through some hard times.

And she was way ahead of the curve on the whole girl empowerment through sex thing. I’m surprised she wasn’t able to break through nationally. I guess if the intertubes had been around back then it might have been different.

Breathtaking bohemian style? In Ypsi? I can’t wait to see who/what she’s talking about.

Wasn’t the Safety Girl headquartered in Ann Arbor in the 90’s?
And how did she now end up in Ypsi and why?
Suddenly she is now, “POOOOFFF!” MS. YPSI?
    just curious.

    watching laughing.

Is that dirty talking old Canadian woman still on TV talking about sex?

And, for what it’s worth, I think Dr. Ruth preceded Safety Girl.

I was told that she tried to open some kind of Safe Sex shop in Depot Town a few years back and she was denied. To risky for quaint olde Depot Town. Anyone have anymore info on that?

I remember her show it was fairly entertaining. I think we need to expand the sex biz in Ypsitucky, there is already plenty of the sex biz going around in the form of prostitution… Maybe she can do outreach to sex workers and encourage safe sex!

As I’ve said before we need decriminalize it and tax/regulate the business. Let’s make Ypsi the “Amsterdam” of SE Michigan.

Loved her back then and love her now. I was there for her presentations to city council and the Planning Commission when she wanted to open a store in Depot Town. Love Baskets were provided for all! Her Cable T.V. show was also very educational. Things might be a bit different now and people might be a bit more open to her shop. People can always go to Ann Arbor and see how that shop is working out over the last couple of years as an example of a “Safe Sex” shop.

Cheeky Monkey sold dongs and butt plugs, didn’t they?
At least I’ve heard people use those hideous Annette Funicello dolls for.

Looks like I misunderstood. I tuned in tonight, and it wasn’t a show so much as a five minute ad for the show, which will begin airing this fall. Still, it was good to see the footage shot around town that was in the ad.

And I had no idea that she’d tried to open a store in Depot Town. That must have happened when I was living in DC/LA…. It’s hilarious to me that we (and by “we” I mean the powers that be) drove a prospective business out of town because it advocated safe sex and sex education.

If you ever interview her for the site (in the men’s room of the brewery), I’d like to know what happened with the sex shop in Depot Town.

does anyone remember the name of the guy who had a show about his life on ann arbor community access tv in the early to mid 90s? He was hapless and entertaining at the same time. Early 20s, dark hair, kinda short.

Youtube before there was such a thing.

My former MIL called me one p.m. @1997 to tune into C.A channel for Safety Girl and the vag. puppet–priceless!!!!!!!!!!! Also the Strap-on episode later was very insightful. Please, Tanya bring back your store that used to be on Liberty St., next to A.D.! I miss those lollipop colored condom suckers and your candor.
