dominionist pizza

I’ve mentioned it here a few times before, but a couple of years ago Ypsilantians fended off anti-gay legislation that was being championed by the founder of Domino’s Pizza, Tom Monahan, an extremely conservative Catholic who happens to run a small Dominionist college here in the heart of town. Tortured by constant thoughts of men making hot homosexual love to one another, Monahan threw a lot of money and resources at an amendment to change our city’s charter, so that individuals could be discriminated against based on sexual orientation. (Click here for a surprisingly good Monahan post of mine from last year… back, before the baby, when I could apparently still write.)

Anyway, as part of Monahan’s pathetic and hate-filled campaign, he sent out postcards to select demographics showing a man in drag with text suggesting that if you didn’t vote to support this amendment, your daughter or granddaughter might find herself locked in a bathroom with this fellow. I gave my postcard to a local gay rights group at the time (they hadn’t seen it yet and were absolutely amazed), and I’ve been looking for another copy ever since. (Things like this need to be preserved so that we don’t forget them.) Well, I just got word from my friend Brett that he’s found one… Here’s the scan:

If you can’t read the text, here’s what it says:

Will you vote YES to protect your daughter… your granddaughter… from being forced to use the girl’s bathroom with men like this?

When this man tried to join a women’s health club in Lansing, he was refused. But in Ypsilanti, homosexual activists’ deceptive campaign put new language in our city law making it illegal for any school, business, or other public place to ‘discriminate’ based on so-called ‘gender identity.’

Now, under city law, a grown man who claims to be female has the special right to use ‘any place’ usually reserved for women and girls.

If you agree it’s wrong to give cross-dressing men the special right to violate the privacy rights of others, especially women and children, please vote YES on the YPSILANTI CITY CHARTER AMENDMENT to remove this dangerous language from our city civil rights law.

I can’t recall all the specifics now, but I believe they were sued for using this man’s image (the same way the anti-Social Security folks were just sued for using the image of two men kissing in their vile “the AARP loves gays” campaign). I also believe that the stuff about him trying to get into a women’s health club was fiction. I can’t remember the details now though.

And how great is it that they tried to spin this as a pirvacy issue? It takes some pretty big balls to persecute a group because of who they sleep with in the privacy of their own homes, and to do so by saying that they, just by using the bathroom, would be violating the privacy of others.

At any rate, there it is. That’s what your pizza money paid for.

(note: My favorite line at the time came from a friend who looked at the card, thought about it for a moment, and then asked, “Are they suggesting that it would be better to have your son or grandson in the bathroom with this guy?” It’s a good question, and I think clearly the answer is no – they believe that a man like this shouldn’t exist.)

I don’t know if they were sued or not, but I know that they used the photo without permission. It was reported in “In Between the Lines” back in Fall 2002(?).

Ah, lovely. I personally don’t give a rat’s heinie who uses the bathroom when I’m in there. Presumably people are there to do their business and then leave. If wee Suzie is startled to see a cross-dresser in the loo, maybe it’s a “teachable moment” for her mom to explain that the non-black-and-white world has a spectrum of people.

I love how they’re framing bigotry as “privacy rights for women and children,” whatever that means (the implication being that guys can tough it out if they encounter this situation).

I especially hate Catholics like Tom Monaghan because they give the rest of us a bad name. I have never and will never (even though I know he doesn’t own it anymore) buy Dominoes pizza as I don’t want my money funding any of his evil, hate-filled missions. I remember when he was building some huge-ass Cathedral in some poor town/village in Guatemala (or some other Central American country), and I was thinking that it would have been money better spent giving them running water or something that would improve their quality of life, not some mother of a Cathedral. Jackass.

I’m not sure this is really gay bashing… Most crossdressing men are actually straight.

Arizona Wants To See Your ID Before You Use The Restroom: SB 1045, authored by Rep. John Kavanagh originally sought to make it a Class 1 Misdemeanor for transgender individuals to use a bathroom other than one that aligns with the gender on their birth certificate.

    Small government, indeed.
