Where are the best potato skins?

potatoskin2011

As some of you no doubt know already, International Potato Skin Day (IPSD) is traditionally celebrated each February, on the Tuesday immediately preceding my birthday, which is on February 11. This year, the high-callorie holiday falls on Tuesday, February 8, which is tomorrow, and, in accordance with our tradition, I’m beginning to make our plans. (In our family, the heaviest person chooses the restaurant, and the youngest person pays. And, we begin consuming potato skins in a clockwise fashion, around the table, starting with the father.) Last year, we celebrated at Aubree’s, and had a fantastic time, but I thought that I’d put the question to you tonight, in case you knew of other restaurants that we might want to hit. (There’s no rule that says we can’t eat potato skins at multiple restaurants.) So, do you know of a restaurant within 200 miles of Ypsilanti that has kick-ass potato skins? And, while we’re at it, I’d also be interested to know if you have any special IPSD traditions in your household.

Speaking of traditions, this has been established an open source holiday. So, you can help build on the tradition however you like. Let’s say, for instance, you think that International Potato Skin Day should be tied somehow to Puxatony Phil and whether or not he sees his shadow. Well, we can do that. For instance, we could say that, if he sees his shadow, you get extra sour cream on ISPD, or, better yet, that you have to drink a beer with every potato skin consumed. So, be creative. Not counting Fat Tuesday, this is our last big opportunity to consume carbs and calories in massive quantities before spring.

Haab’s has the best $2 potato skins ever. Maybe its just me, but the ones they serve after you’ve had your third happy hour drink may be the best potato skins in the world.

My family is fundamentalist. We eat our potato skins on this holiday through a hole cut in a sheet.

Are the any restaurants that make their own potato skins? My impression is that just buy them frozen in bulk and heat them up when they get orders. Maybe this is a holiday best celebrated at home, baking potatoes and frying bacon.

Happy International Potato Skin Day, everyone–especially Mark and family (and Happy Birthday, Mark, very soon–were all those robins, hundreds, flying around yesterday and the day before, even while it snowed, heralding your birthday or IPSD?). The PS’s in the photo look so yummy, so it’s hard to even mention how yummy the PS’s at Metro Airport used to be–because I think they were probably greasy and awful but just seemed really good because it was fun to be there waiting to go away on a trip . . . and before high-security so I’d go and meet family members and friends who had stopovers. Good ol’ days that way.

But HAPPY potato skins wherever you go, starting with the father!

Okay don’t get mad at me, but I’ve never had loaded potato skins. :butt down: I did eat those Tato Skin potato chips from back in the day though and they were nasty. I have to believe that the real thing is much better.

Are you accepting money from the Potato Skin Council? Did they replace the Ministry of Ball Shaving as your corporate sugar daddy?

In our house when we want potatoe skins we head to the Tap Room. They are the best we have had. While we do not celebrate ISPD we do seem to like them best on $2.25 Michigan beer day.

You haven’t lived until you’ve order the potato skins at Smarty Pantz. They’re two for one during their bikini lunches and the come with a side of crabz.

I am writing what promises to be a very prominent research paper on this very subject. Potato scholarship is about to be knocked on its ass. For realz.
