The resurrection of Newt

My friends tell me that I shouldn’t worry about Newt Gignrich getting too far in the Republican presidential primaries. I’d like to share their optimism. I’d like to think that there’s no way in hell that so-called “values” voters would elect a man who we now know to have been boning his mistress in the forests of Georgia between heated moral tirades against the wicked, oral adulterer, Bill Clinton, but I’m not so sure. The last I heard, he was raising more money than all the other 2012 Republican hopefuls combined. And, he’s willing to push boundaries that even Palin seems unwilling to. Here, on that subject, is a clip from the National Review:

(F)ormer House speaker Newt Gingrich tells National Review Online that President Obama may follow a “Kenyan, anti-colonial” worldview.

Gingrich says that D’Souza has made a “stunning insight” into Obama’s behavior — the “most profound insight I have read in the last six years about Barack Obama.”

“What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?” Gingrich asks. “That is the most accurate, predictive model for his behavior.”

“This is a person who is fundamentally out of touch with how the world works, who happened to have played a wonderful con, as a result of which he is now president,” Gingrich tells us.

“I think he worked very hard at being a person who is normal, reasonable, moderate, bipartisan, transparent, accommodating — none of which was true,” Gingrich continues. “In the Alinksy tradition, he was being the person he needed to be in order to achieve the position he needed to achieve… He was authentically dishonest.”…

Yeah, it’s laughably stupid, but it’s apparently resonating with those who want a somewhat knowledgeable-sounding justification for hating our President. (“Kenyan worldview” sounds so much better than just using the N-word, doesn’t it?) But, that’s where we are today. That’s what the people apparently want to hear. Despite their ripening disdain for the educated, they want a history professor like Gingrich to justify their prejudices. And who cares if the guy left his first wife while she was in the hospital fighting breast cancer, or got caught stealing tax payer money as Speaker of the House? It’s insignificant in the whole scheme of things. The message, after all, is more important than the man. We need someone who’s not afraid to propose mass executions for drug dealers and call into question the nationality of our President. We desperately need someone who’s unafraid to cultivate that fertile ground of anger and paranoia just below that which Sarah Palin has laid claim to.

And, to put it all in perspective, I’ll leave you with this quote from advisor on international aid to Pakistan for the United Nations, Mosharraf Zaid: “When we try to explain what is happening in America, we simply say that a great country is going through a kind of Talibanization — led by mullahs like Newt Gingrich, Pamela Geller, and the occasional Terry Jones.

You are right about Newt. He has no support among values voters. But this next election cycle you will witness the three R’s: Replace, Repeal, Restore. Replace the current officeholders, repeal the health care bill and other socialist endeavors, and restore our republic.

What’s even better is Newt suggested killing drug smugglers at a high school football and cheerleading convention. What a great way to set an example for the younger generation.

The Republicans should sit down with the Iranians and take some pointers.

Our real problem is that far too many people eat this shit up and will say “I didn’t really understand why the USA is so messed up until Newt told me that Obama has a Kenyan anti-colonial world view”.

He may not win any primaries, but he’ll dictate the conversation for a while, dragging the Republicans even further into the quicksand of thuggish know nothingness.

In April of 1994, I met Newt Gingrich. I asked him some questions and then argued with him for a few minutes in front of a group of a couple dozen people or so. In person he strikes me very much as a pure sociopath, and in my life I have only met three or four people who seemed that way. There was a ‘deadness’ behind his eyes that genuinely frightened me. I distinctly remember feeling very glad I was not in a room alone with him. Something is very deeply wrong with that man psychologically. I am sure of it.

I’m not kidding about this. I may disagree with many Republicans and even hate a good number of them. But even so, I pretty much always get the sense that they are at least somewhat sane individuals with psyches reasonably in-tact. This is not the sense I got from Newt at all.

In 1991 I met serial killer Leslie Allen Williams before he was caught. He worked at a gas station/auto shop in Redford Township where I had taken my car for repairs. In my interaction with him, his presence felt very similar to that which I sensed from Gingrich three years later. With him also I saw a ‘deadness’ behind his eyes which seemed in dramatic contradiction to the expressions he made with his face. Again I got the very strong instinctual impulse to get the fuck away from him as fast as possible without a conscious idea as to why exactly.

I just hope enough people in the national GOP have also sensed this about Gingrich that they conspire to never let him get anywhere in that process of becoming president.

In Nevada, their Senate candidate talks about people turning to “Second Amendment remedies” if the extreme right doesn’t get its way. Rand Paul in Kentucky wants to abolish all federal funding for education. Sarah Palin’s hand-picked Senate candidate in Alaska thinks unemployment benefits are unconstitutional.

Salon touched on this today as well. Here’s how they summed it up.

Newt’s been a camera-seeking pile of talking shit so long that nothing he says or does should surprise anyone who’s been paying attention, but it’s still exciting to see him embracing a classy sort of birtherism where it doesn’t matter that the president was born in America, because his heart belongs to his radical socialist foreign black African Kenyan whitey-hating father.

“Values voters” is such a junky term, all that sanctimony and missing compassion posing (in a mirror) as virtue. Fits Gingrich just as snugly as the other opportunistic phonies like Palin, Vitter . . . why not? He had that (distasteful) whiff of “intellectualism” because he managed to have a university teaching job, but now it pays to be creepy and insane, so that’s his new getup. Yuck. Our poor country.

Gingrich admits ABC claim was false, and that he lied in the debate.

After nearly a week on the defensive, CNN’s John King reports tonight that Newt Gingrich’s claim about offering witnesses to ABC News in his defense — to rebut the network’s interview with his second wife, Marianne Gingrich — was not true.

“Tonight, after persistent questioning by our staff, the Gingrich campaign concedes now Speaker Gingrich was wrong — both in his debate answer, and in our interview yesterday,” King said on tonight’s edition of John King USA. “Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond says the only people the Gingrich campaign offered to ABC were his two daughters from his first marriage.”

An important victory for John King in his ongoing effort to justify last Thursday’s confrontation.

Here’s one for the Hypocrisy Watch. D’Souza, who accused Obama of “attacking the traditional values agenda” of “traditional Christianity” by supporting marriage equality and abortion rights, has been busted having an affair behind his wife’s back.
