In hopes of currying favor with the President and his followers, Republican members of the U.S. Senate seek to throw out the results of a free and fair election. This is sedition.

Sorry I’ve been away for a while. It’s not that I haven’t missed you all. I have. And I’ve wanted to write. I’ve just been forcing myself not to. I knew, if I started spending time here again, I’d eventually begin writing about Trump, and I didn’t want to do that. After Biden’s victory, I didn’t see any justification for it. Before then, I could argue that my writing about Trump here was beneficial. “By obsessively documenting every assault of the Trump administration,” I told myself, “I’m helping to motivate people to volunteer for Democratic candidates, to get out and vote, and to contribute financially.” Now that Biden has won, though, I don’t really see what’s to be gained by talking about our failed despot. It’s much better, I’ve thought, to just stay quiet, and allow him to fade away. Today, though, I felt as though I had to say something.

First, just to recap… All of the states have now certified their election results. In the end, Joe Biden secured 306 electoral votes to Donald Trump’s 232, making him the next President of the United States. Donald Trump, of course, has tried to make the case that there was rampant voter fraud, and that he had, in fact, won the election. His attorneys brought 60 cases across the United States alleging fraud, of which 59 have already been thrown out, in many cases by judges that he himself had placed on the bench. This, of course, is not surprising, given that Trump and his team offered no actual proof of widespread voter fraud. For all their talk of fraud, they’ve still demonstrated none. And in each of the states where they’ve claimed fraud to have taken place have, the election results have now been certified. And this is true even in states like Georgia, where Republicans control the legislature. Donald Trump, as we now know beyond a shadow of a doubt, lost the electoral vote overwhelmingly, and the popular vote by approximately 7 million votes. This is just a fact.

In spite of this, several elected Republican Senators have made it known that, on January 6, they intend to vote against certifying the 2020 election results at the federal level, joining around 140 Republican members of the House of Representatives in their attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election. “We intend to vote on January 6 to reject the electors from disputed states as not ‘regularly given’ and ‘lawfully certified’ (the statutory requisite), unless and until that emergency 10-day audit is completed,” the eleven Republican Senators and Senators-Elect wrote in a statement yesterday. Like everything else that Trump and his allies have attempted, this will not work. [They don’t have the votes to actually stop the process from moving forward.] But that’s not the point. [Ironically, it should be pointed out that many of these Senators won in elections they’re claiming to have been fraudulent.]

We know why these people are doing this. It’s not that they believe an election was stolen, but that they want to inherit the mantle of Donald Trump, and they don’t care about the ramifications. They don’t care about the long term consequences of telling the American people that an election has been stolen when it hasn’t. As Mitt Romney just said, “The egregious ploy to reject electors may enhance the political ambition of some, but dangerously threatens our Democratic Republic… I could never have imagined seeing these things in the greatest democracy in the world. Has ambition so eclipsed principle?” [Former House Speaker Paul Ryan joined Romney in speaking out today, saying, “Under our system, voters determine the president… Joe Biden’s victory is entirely legitimate.”]

Republican political strategist Steve Schmidt took things a little further in his Twitter feed today, where he said the following about the Republicans, like Ted Cruz, who have made it known they they intend to help Donald Trump perpetuate the lie that the election was stolen from him. [I guess the Harvard-educated Cruz, who once swore that he would never be Trump’s “servile puppy dog,” has had a change of heart.]

2021 will be a hard year in the life of the American nation. There is a great struggle that lies before us and our disbelief at its arrival must not blind us to the lethal danger it poses to the American experiment. The poisonous bounty of Trump’s catastrophic Presidency is ready for harvest and the whole world will get to watch his seditious antics play out during a joint session of Congress on January 6th. It will play out as a farce and it will fail. Nearly 100 years on America will have it’s version of the Beer Hall Putsch. The danger lies in the act, not the outcome. We are in a dangerous moment and I’d like to try my best to explain how I see it.

Before I start, there is an important matter of fact which unfortunately needs restating. Joe Biden won the Presidential election decisively. The election was free, fair and legitimate. There is no evidence of any wide spread fraud. Allegations of fraud are premeditated lies being made by a rancid assortment of Trump’s stooges and propagandists. With the exception of a few of the more addled House GOP members like Louis Gohmert, every single House Member and every US Senator that participates in denying this reality and thus the legitimacy of our election does so as a cynical act which they know for certain has no legitimate basis. Such actions are a grievous sin against America democracy and a brutal betrayal of their oaths of office and duty. They will be desecrating the blood sacrifices of 13 generations of American Patriots of all creeds and origins who died so that our children could be free. They are fighting to maintain the power of a defeated President against the sovereign will of the American people as lawfully exercised under the Constitution of the United States. They are fighting to establish a tyranny. They are deliberately poisoning Faith and Belief in American democracy.

Democratic Republic’s cannot survive such a collapse. The system is rooted in the willingness of one side to cede power to another at the will of the people. There are no other systems of government except for this type that are free. The legitimacy of that system is being strangled by Trumps lies and the lies of his movement. That movement is an autocratic one with fascistic markers. It is hostile to the American Constitution, the rule of law and the highest ideas and ideals of American liberty.

January 6, will be a historic day in America. The battle lines will be drawn. The Autocrats will step forward into the light. They will include a majority of the House GOP Conference. After the 6th, Kevin McCarthy will be the leader of House Autocrats, and Liz Cheney will be the Leader of House Conservatives. They will include a substantial number of GOP Senators and almost all of the known GOP Presidential aspirants.

The Rubicon will be crossed on the 6th. The ruthless and amoral cynicism of Senators Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, James Lankford and Josh Hawley will be on appalling display. It must be opposed fiercely. It must be recognized for what it is. Another storm is gathering in the constant struggle between liberty and her enemies. Trump has unleashed the furies and has found his following. It will be a long fight. At the hour of his defeat and defenestration Trump has done his greatest damage. This is a movement that is fueled by lies, conspiracies, corruption, greed, extremism, racism, grievance, resentment, cynicism and a profound absence of love for America. It is right to feel anger and contempt towards its leaders and enablers. There is only one proposition that America’s pro-democracy coalition can offer to these people. “We win – you lose.” It’s that simple. Sedition is the precise word and the right word to describe what we have been witnessing. Never before have so many American leaders betrayed their country. We will watch their eternal disgrace on live TV. The evidence of their ignominy will exist forever as will the memory of their monumental betrayal. Shame on them all.

Here are the names of those Republican Senators and Senators-Elect who have signed-on to join Ted Cruz in his attempt to stop the results of our last election from being accepted. They are Senators Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Steve Daines of Montana, John Kennedy of Louisiana, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, and Mike Braun of Indiana, and Senators-Elect Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama. Remember their names. By refusing to accept the results of our free and fair election, they are guilty of sedition, at the very least, and they should held accountable.

If any of you have any question at all as to what the above mentioned Senators and Senators-Elect have agreed to support when signing on to this document, I’d encourage you to listen to the following audio of President Donald Trump, recorded recently, threatening Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to, in the words of Senator Dick Durbin, “deliberately change and misrepresent the legally confirmed vote totals” in that state.

“It’s gonna be costly to you,” Trump says to Raffensperger on the call, when the Secretary of State refuses to “find 11,780 votes” for him. [Trump had tried to call Raffensperger 18 times before the Secretary of State took the call. He clearly knew the President was going to try to shake him down, the same way he did the President of Ukraine. Thankfully he had the presence of mind to record the entire call. As one of Raffensperger associates told Politico today, “It’s nice to have something like this, hard evidence, to dispute whatever he’s claiming about the secretary. Lindsey Graham asked us to throw out legally cast ballots. So yeah, after that call, we decided maybe we should do this.”] This is the kind of criminal activity one sees from a mob boss. The members of the U.S. Senate named above know it. And yet they continue to go along. It is pathetic, grotesque and dangerous. And all of their political careers should end immediately.

update: The snow person featured above was created by Arlo and I this morning in Riverside Park. I was going to use a photo of Donald Trump, but this made me happier.

I would estimate between 40 and 100 million Americans passionately believe the election was stolen. True or not that is the perception, imo. Why wouldn’t we go out of our way to try to try to convince these people that it was legit. Signature verification, examine the machines, examine the authenticity of the paper ballots, double check that there was not voting machines hooked up to the internet at polling places and double check to make sure that the changes in voting processes were legal. Why not? What are you afraid of? Dunk on Trump with facts! Try it.

In the case of Detroit the absentee ballot votes are still attached to zero registered voters. Why? iRobert assured me (a month ago) this was just a matter of time to get cleared up. All of the other cities and Wayne have the absentee ballots attached to registered voters. What is going on?

To pretend like there are not valid questions seems idiotic. The last time Maynard pretended like there were not valid questions he ended up parroting a lol ridiculous set of of lies for 3.5 years.

Did you miss the part about Trump bringing 60 cases, offering no proof, and having things dismissed? That’s what that was. That was their opportunity to prove fraud. Just because they couldn’t doesn’t mean that Biden should be kept from office.

The good news I heard is, the US Air Force base in Scotland that is close to the Trump properties has been told to prepare for the arrival of a “high flyer” on Jan. 19. Could the Leader be preparing for a quick get away in case the slow mo coup fails?

Harping about voter fraud is what losers do. The election was rigged alright, but despite all of Trumps attempts (wrecking the USPS was of course the biggest) the people prevailed. McConnel set on voter security legislation for four years, this is how they want the elections, but like with everything else, they are inept.

FF, you don’t understand why random groupings of absentee ballots wouldn’t have a “registered voters” value associated with them?

You can look through the complete Detroit results for each and every race, precinct-by-pricinct here: https://detroitmi.gov/webapp/election-results

You can also contact the Clerk’s office and request a printout of any particular aspects of election data you’d like. Contact them and order a printout of all precinct absentee ballot totals.

Jean, were you suggesting FF could get into MENSA?

We talked about this a month ago. Random samplings? I don’t remember you calling them “random samplings” before. You suggested the County election results would have the registered voters connected to the absentee precincts by now. All other counties in Wayne county were/are showing ballots cast as corresponding to an actual number of registered voters. Detroit is STILL an outlier in that regard. Why?

Maybe there is a good reason? The reason you gave before was that it took Detroit longer to post it on the county site because they lacked resources. But a month has pay at least.

My reason for asking you guys soecifically is because I have heard several “deplorable-types” mention this oddity. It is their perception that it is odd. People like Mark and Jean say that they have the perception nothing at all odd happened. I am the middle man. Explain how it should not be considered odd. You attempted to give an explanation before but it ended up not being an explanation that proved to be incorrect. Detroit absentee precincts are literally an outlier in this regard.

FF– If you have concerns, please follow up with the City Clerk or do your own review as iRobert suggested. I have no interest in doing so myself. Why should I? Have you carefully reviewed past accusations of voter fraud in Detroit, because they happen every year. Have you carefully reviewed every election where you have voted? I’m guessing no. It is not proof that the ‘deplorable’ are right is lay people rely on court review and public officials tasked with that responsibility to assure that elections are free and fair.

There are people here on the left who regularly assert election fraud. Wobblie is one. Why not ask them to dig into this nonsense with their half baked theories, rigorous confirmation bias and inadequate information?

You are always asking other people to do work. Anyone who has clever ideas or questions bears the responsibility of doing the work to address/realize their ideas. No now else. Ideas are easy; the work is hard. Do your own fucking work.

And for the sake of everyone here, just stop with the specious arguments. You must know you are full of shit. I’m going to start calling you Fatuous Flake

Anonymous– your question is a good one. My clients and entrepreneurial friends have all come up with different strategies. It’s not one size fits all. Movement to online retail was the most pervasive. Many local businesses had not done so before the pandemic. The strategies were as particular as the businesses. One thing small business and small NP’s have in their favor is the capacity to adjust course quickly. That was very evident with many businesses changing their model on a dime from the outset of the pandemic and with each change in EO/grant opportunities etc. What small NP’s and for profit businesses do not have in their favor is access to emergency capital. That changes somewhat in this case. The banks picked winners and losers, which is often the case. Many from marginalized groups did not believe they would qualify for loans and never applied.

On thing I would love to see in the future is grant and loan application assistance for communities of color and women. There is a lot of institutional bias against women and POC in applying for loans. The trust isn’t there and it’s really beholden to the institutions to fix it. It’s not in their financial interest to regularly refuse business loans to half the population. It is in their financial interest to offer predatory loans. So I guess we’d need to regulate those out of existence before doing the latter. The only way to fix short term greed/hoarding in capitalism is to remove the profit motive. There is nothing about these predatory systems that is actually good long term for the economy. Denying potential Ito large groups of people is a bad economic practice.

Vent over. If you have questions, ask the businesses you patronize.

PS If more loans don’t come through soon, we will lose even more local businesses, especially food and entertainment. Smaller non profits are also failing right and left. On the plus side, e really needed commercial rents to drop and this situation has created many opportunities there for those willing to assume the risk. And no one opens a small business to make a lot of money. It very rarely happens. Personal bankruptcy is a much more common outcome than wealth. They do it because they feel compelled to do it. And they will be compelled to do it no matter the economic circumstances. Entrepreneurs are following some other motivation than profit. They are capitalists but the same system inequities that victimize the little guy, predate on the little business owner. More so if they are female, queer and/or a person of color.

    Jean,

If you read what I am writing in an honest way you will notice that I am talking about our election in terms of perceived irregularities. PERCEIVED. I am also arguing that we ought to pay close attention to perceptions because millions and millions of people are pissed off. Right or wrong. You are pretending like the scale of perception that the election was a fraud is a normal occurrence. Have there ever been more citizens who have sworn under oath, under penalty of prosecution, that they witnessed something they perceived as “irregular”? Yes or no? If you want I will do the work for you: The answer is no. I think you are drastically underestimating the number of people who believe this was a fraud.

I am not asking anybody to do my work. I already asked this forum (a month ago) for the reason that Detroit absentee precincts are not connected to registered voters—on the Wayne county website. I was given an “explanation” which I accepted. The only problem is that the explanation does not appear to be correct because the elections results of Wayne county still show ballots cast in Detroit belonging to zero registered voters. Detroit is literally an outlier in this regard.

I don’t really care to investigate it, to be honest. I am investigating other things. iRobert, claimed a month ago this would be corrected on the site in a matter of time. It is still not corrected. I don’t care. It is small potatoes to me. But it seems reasonable that a so called deplorable type who had concern about Ballots being listed as belonging to zero registered voters will have even more concern when they realize the explanation of a month ago did not really explain anything.

Did you not look at te City of Detroit’s election results page, FF?

There you can see the absentee votes as cast in each race in Precinct-by-precinct summary.

The Wayne County Clerk’s office can provide you with a printout of the specific information you are looking for if you want more detail than is provided on the Detroit City Clerk’s webpage.

As I said, the absentee ballots in Detroit are counted in groups. The ballots that make up any absentee group are random in the sense that they can come from any precinct in the city. The absentee ballots are never unattached to a specific precinct. The precinct is indicated on the ballot. It doesn’t even have to be looked up.

All you are complaining about is what data is made immediately available on the Wayne County Clerk’s website. There is much more Detroit data available on the Detroit City Clerk’s website. But you can simply request the data which most interests you. You can order a printout with the exact perimeters you want.

They might even be willing to take the time to explain the details regarding the report generating program they use.

I trust you iRobert. I am too busy to look. A month ago we were using the Wayne county website election results. The Wayne county website election results for Detroit absentee ballots still read exactly the same weird way. I call it weird because Detroit is, as far as I can tell, STILL the only city that reads that way AND in past elections the Detroit absentee pricincts show a NORMAL correspondence between ballots cast and Registered voters. It is a double irregularity. The county election results are listed weirdly for Detroit relative to the rest of the cities and Detroit election results on the the County website are weird relative to Detroit in past years. Yes or no? You claimed that would be cleaned up soon a month ago. It is still not cleaned up ON THE COUNTY WEBSITE. Yes or no?

I still would consider us to be within the “very soon window.” Anyway, the information is immediately available to anyone who requests it.

Do you understand why the absentee ballot groups wouldn’t have a “registered voters” value for that field in the database?

Are you pretending to be slow as a gag?

Are you just mad about how wrong you’ve been about everything? Is this how you get your revenge – by annoying everyone?

    Vague Guy,

Should I have used the phrase “help to ensure” there? I defer to your judgment because it is obvious to me that you are a better writer than I am but you are also more vague, smug, obtuse, and dishonest in my opinion (of course). I have explained it before. I do not engage with the coluMbo crowd because I think I can convince you guys of anything. I am using you for a different purpose. Thank you again for providing the article which is another piece of evidence that Wobblie was 300% wrong. That was not the point of you offering that article though was it? Hahaha.

Shhhhhh. I won’t tell anybody. Sleep easy. Nobody sees the truth about you. Go to bed tonight believing you are more than just another idiot.

    iRobert,

If January 5th falls in the range of what you consider “soon” for clearing up the Wayne county election results then that is your business. I don’t have to believe you are being honest though. Sorry.

I’m being honest. I don’t think it’s been unusually long aa compared to how long it took in previous elections. We are also only talking about the webmaster posting the data which is immediately available to anybody who requests it. If you call or email the Clerk’s office to inquire as to why they haven’t updated the website yet, I’m sure they will provide you with a printout of exactly the data you’re seeking. They likely will also inform you that the City of Detroit’s website has been updated with the precinct-by-precinct absentee numbers. You can download any of that immediately.

What is the situation with Fulton County now? Have there been any developments in regard to the challenges there?

Polls have just closed in Georgia, but anyone who was in line at 7pm is allowed to vote, so there are still some long lines at many polling locations.

Fulton County has a lower turnout than it did in November by about 78,000 votes. But early numbers are looking good for Democrats.

Trends are looking good for the Democrats. They’re outperforming Biden’s November numbers.

FF, the Wayne County Clerk is busy like you. They’ve posted this message on their webpage: “Due to limited staffing and an overwhelming number of phone calls, voicemails, emails, and letters you may now schedule your own appointment in order to receive services from our office using our eScheduler (see below). Appointments are required for all in-person services. Thank you.”

One person was shot by Capital police inside the capital building. I’m looking forward to seeing their identity.

You can imagine my disappointment when I saw it wasn’t HW. I’m feeling terrible now.
