Count the votes! Stop the count!

Supporters of Donald Trump, with his encouragement, have been protesting across the nation since the election. In some states, like Michigan, they’ve been demanding that the counting of votes be stopped. And, in others, like Arizona, they’ve been demanding that the counting of votes be continued. I don’t want to get into how stupid it is that Trump and his people are arguing one thing in states where he’s ahead, and the exact opposite in states where he’s behind. I think it’s probably obvious to most of you what’s going on. I just wanted to note it, though, as I think it speaks to the insanity of what we’re being confronted with at the moment, as America’s least informed citizens, having been fed a constant diet of lies by Fox News for decades, have now been unleashed upon our democratic institutions by a man who has nothing left to lose, and no concern at all for the long term damage being done.

The folks who descended on the TCF Center here in Detroit yesterday to bang on windows and demand that lawfully cast ballots not be counted were apparently called to action by way of a new Facebook group disseminating conspiracy theories about how Joe Biden was attempting to steal the election. Here’s an example of the kind of content this group has been sharing online. This post, made by Fox News personality Lou Dobbs, contends that boxes of fake, pro-Biden ballots have been delivered to Detroit’s TCF Center to be counted. [It’s worth pointing out that the President’s son Eric shared the same post. It’s also worth noting that Dobbs isn’t the only Fox News personality pushing out conspiracy theories for Trump. Maria Bartiromo is dong it too.]

This, of course, was bullshit. As WXYZ’s Ross Jones was quick to point out, the “ballot thief” seen in the above image was his photographer, who was loading camera equipment into the building so that they could cover the ballot counting. Here’s WXYZ telling the story last night.

According to CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, the social media disinformation campaigns are coming fast and furious now. The group pro-Trump Facebook group “Stop The Steal,” he says is “gaining about 1,000 new members EVERY 10 SECONDS.” So this is likely only going to get worse. Thankfully, it looks like Biden’s lead here in Michigan is large enough that we can avoid the worst of it, as the attention of those looking to steal the election on Trump’s behalf has been turned to other states, where it may be easier for them to obfuscate the truth and sell a narrative of election fraud. The good news is, the Republicans, for the most part, don’t seem to be pitching in to help Trump in his attempt to hijack the election. As Matthew Gertz just pointed out, “Trump needing to trot out the Sekulow/Giuliani/Bondi team for the election lawsuits kinda suggests that the GOP legal establishment extracted everything it wanted from Trump and is now leaving him for dead.” Let’s hope that’s the case, and that we’re spared the civil war by those self-serving Republicans who would rather just focus on keeping their positions of power and holding onto the Senate. It should also be noted that, so far, at least as far as I can tell, no states have stopped counting their ballots in order to appease Donald Trump. As Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf just said, “Pennsylvania is going to count every vote and no amount of intimidation will stop our dedicated election officials in our municipalities… The planned attacks on our elections this morning are undemocratic and all elected officials must denounce them.”

update: Trump has put out an official statement, again claiming to have won, despite the popular vote.

update: In Nevada, former Trump Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell and right wing operative Matt Schlapp claim to have evidence of illegal ballots having been cast for Biden. They they refuse to share what that evidence is, when asked by reporters.

update: It seems likely, as of right now, that Biden will win Nevada, and maybe even Georgia. Here’s the latest.

From a Detroit poll worker. I have removed the name for their safety.
Read this illuminating account from a Democratic poll watcher at the TCF center in Detroit.
Some general observations from spending a long day as a challenger for the Democratic Party in Detroit while poll workers completed the process of counting tens of thousands of absentee ballots cast during this election.
First, the process of tabulating these AV ballots is both transparent and incredibly organized. In a huge conference room, 134 precincts were present with 6-7 poll workers stationed per precinct all with very specific and mostly mundane jobs. I watched one woman unfold and flatten thousands of ballots throughout the day. That was her job. All of this happened in plain view. Challengers had full access to observe this process.
Second, GOP challengers fell into one of three categories: (1) agitators. These guys (they were all guys) would question every thing that poll workers were doing while shouting senseless things like “don’t count that vote!” When confronted, their immediate reaction was to escalate. (2) mask trolls. These people preferred the chin strap mask and took joy when told to cover their mouth and nose as if they were playing a game. Many had exaggerated coughs. (3) the serious idealogues. These were the majority. Many of them campaign staffers and GOP operatives.
While all of these GOP challengers may have had different motives for being there, they all had one thing in common: a genuine belief that widespread fraud was being perpetrated before their eyes. I spoke with many of these people (admittedly most were kind and well-mannered) about what they were seeing. None were able to provide any cogent or consistent basis for their believe, but all were undeterred. None of them were able to cite any evidence of wrongdoing or fraudulent activity going on before our very eyes.
Minutes prior to filing a lawsuit alleging lack of access to this process, hundreds of unmasked Republicans bum rushed the doors to the conference room. When officials refused to let them enter they began chanting “Stop the Vote!” “Stop the Count!” The huge presence of media surrounded them with cameras and microphones as a Jared Kushner doppelgänger announced the filing of the lawsuit. It was a pathetic and desperate stunt.
After 8 months of cautiously living through this pandemic, this was clearly the riskiest activity of mine in terms of COVID exposure. None of this risk was my own doing.
The poll workers I observed were impressively resilient and composed. They spent a full day focused on their job while challengers peered over their shoulder questioning their every move. Many were blatantly accused of wrongdoing and repeatedly bullied. I didn’t witness a single poll worker lose his/her composure or react to the obviously uncomfortable environment they were in. I kept telling myself that the presidency was being determined in that room by weary poll workers who had every right to lose their shit, but didn’t. It was impressive. They had a great moment of solidarity when they stood and cheered when one jerk was escorted out of the room by police after a nasty incident of intimidation.
My final thoughts come after listening to Biden’s remarks from earlier this afternoon. He stated that our political opponents are not our enemies and that we must find a way to unite. I did my best today to accept this approach, but it was very hard. I spent the day with fellow Americans living in an entirely different reality. America is sadly broken. A Biden presidency gives me hope that we can repair these wounds. I just don’t know how we get there.

White voter turnout barely increased this election and more whites voted for Trump in 2020 than in 2016. Thank you Latinx voters who increased from 12 million to 20 million. That’s +65%. And they voted overwhelmingly for Biden. Thank you to the movement builders who spent that last ten years building a grassroots progressive political movement in Arizona to get Latinx and others more engaged. Thank you UNITE-HERE, UFCW, and other unions for being a core part of this story in Phoenix. Shame on the Democratic establishment for thinking that mild centrist reformism was going to win back alienated white working class people angry that their standard of living has fallen for decades. The famous New Deal Coalition was built on big change that delivered in people’s lives. Sorry folks, but Bernie would have done far better.

Given how dumb so many of the electorate vote, I would be the right candidate for them, a dolt for the dumb–kinda catchy don’t you think, or maybe a dolt for the most. Got to work on the slogans, but I am no more creative than I am smart–another potential voter base for me to attract. A no talent dolt for the masses–still dosn’t have the ring I need. Maybe JH can help out.

the centerist failure to move republican/death cult voters to the Democrats is being blamed on Biden being stuck with the “socialist” label is as predictable as republicans accusing every Democrat of being a socialist. Was not that their mantra against Obama–he was a Kenyan Socialist, I remember being told that repeatedly–one of the main reasons I voted for him twice. Could not get any more centerist than Clinton and Biden–it took the mobilization of “left” voters to defeat Trump. It was the failure of Clinton to mobilize “left” voters that caused her defeat. But count on the Democrats to learn the wrong lessons once again.

  15. Posted November 6, 2020 at 11:52 am | Permalink

Despite the lack of a huge groundswell of support for my candidacy I am reminded of my last venture into electoral politics. I ran for state representative back in 1976. This election cycle was very much like the 76 election. An impeached president. Empire crumbling. Cost of endless war weighing down the economy. A growing awareness of the ecological crises. Actual talk from politicians of Economic Democracy . At that time the left was splintered between Harris, Udal and Brown among others. Like this year the moderates and pro-empire Democrats coalesced around a single candidate, Jimmy Carter and won the primaries. I ran as an independent on an Economic Democracy platform, this was down in south central Illinois (where I hail from). We didn’t get much traction and I went down to glorious defeat. Carter won. I will say he was the last decent human we have had as President, but he totally failed to deliver anything to the working class–which as now, was being hammered by an economy that was stripping them of any wealth they may have accumulated. Thus the creation of the Reagan Democrats in 1980.
Biden was around when Jimmy was President. I hope he learned that he needs to deliver to his voters, or they may run away when a demagogue from the right sings a siren song.

The process for tabulating votes has been exhaustingly explained, dumbo. There are large batches of mail in votes that get counted and credited. That they are going to Biden overwhelmingly is no surprise. It’s why Trump was laying the groundwork for this well in advance. Your dictator lost. What’s more, the emperor has no clothes. At the end of the day he has nothing up his sleeve but lies and a tiny, feeble little penis. It’s over.

The really scary thing for you conservative pinheads is that while it’s slow and bumpy, the mail-in voting process has been incredibly successful. There was a huge uptick in voters who took advantage of the option. And It worked. And now states know how to do it. It will get smoother and smoother. The voter turnout will be bigger and bigger. This spells long-term doom for the GOP. The pandemic made their worst fear a reality. Sorry, bitch-boy.

It also references a George Clooney fund raiser that occurred in March as some of the money that was funneled to Clinton. There is a reason why Democrats took it on the chin down ballot in 2016 and that is because the DNC gave there money to Clinton so she could beat Sanders. How much more do you want me to dig up for you.

Being what you might call height challenged, I’m going to need one of these too–so first the rug, and then 5’8″ here I come.

Your so right, Wobblie. I was assigned to get the Maynard vote. I didn’t do so well.

BitvI agree, we do need to win back the fascists. How do we do that? Should we use more flags and arm bands? More camp?

Do we need our own Q? Maybe that would bring me back into the fold.

Anyone have any guesses what this is about?
    Nerve wracking.

I know you worked very hard to bring HW around, and that effort alone should win you some accolades in the campaigning hall of fame. My constant wooing of FF I am sure was equally successful. Once the money starts rolling in I’ll bring you and Lynne on as my campaign managers. No way can we loose in 2024, Harris will be a pushover for us.

Have you considered putting a hamburger on the end of a fishing pole?

No ideas on how we bring fascists back into the party, Wobblie? What would we call our own Q? X seems like a cool letter.

    Wobblie—
There is nothing but good news of the Black vote is split a little (very little) between parties because that means the Dem party will have to work harder for their votes which can only be good for the entire country. The Dems have started that work. More to come.

The lost potential embodied in oppression is astounding. Oppression is expensive and is actually not long term economically productive or sound.

    Two other points:
    1) The Cuban and Venezuelan American vote was heavily influenced by their fears of statism which they conflate with ‘socialism’. I drive down south this summer and conservative radio was all over the Biden is a socialist line. Way more so than ANTIFA is burning cities. And there was nothing about BLM which tells me their internal polls told them socialism is scarier to the right than ‘identity politics.’

    2) the increase in Trump POC votes is based on exit polls excluding mail In ballots which excludes mail in ballots that skew heavily Dem. the overall increase in voters also might skew that number. I’m going to wait for the Pew data after the election to make any conclusions.

It stinks mr that the right has not been able to attract more voters of color given that so many are socially conservative, anti abortion and religiously dogmatic. It’s not like those Dem voters have a belief system or economic circumstance much like the average liberal white voter.

JH, will you be available for consulting over the next 4 years? Just got off the phone with my image consultant. Evan with elevator heels and the leg extension surgery it is going to be tough to get to 5’8″ which means that half of Amercians are still going to be looking down at me. She advised I go with hair plugs instead of a rug, ala Joe, it will look more natural to those who will still see nothing but my noggin.
Plugs are more expensive than a rug, so dig deep Maytards, let’s put a good looking roof on our candidate.

Eisenhower did fine. You could go for that look, Wobblie. He was warning us against the military industrial complex, so you’d be bringing that to mind.

I am wondering about the administration’s recent firings too, Jean. I wonder if it’s just a tantrum.

JH, I agree 100% with ,”There is nothing but good news of the Black vote is split a little (very little) between parties because that means the Dem party will have to work harder for their votes which can only be good for the entire country. ” Now explain to me why that same logic can not apply to the working class? It seems like they have been crying out since the 1980 election that government should do something to advance their interests.

I’m thinking I’ll keep the program simple. “The same Rights and Protections for All People. Corporations are not People.”
