As Biden seems poised to win, a desperate and pathetic Trump claims victory

[The above electoral map from the New York Times shows where we are as of 9:30 AM this morning, with ballots still being counted across the United States.]

As expected, Donald Trump claimed victory early this morning, before all of the votes were counted, saying that he would call upon the Supreme Court to stop millions of legally cast ballots from being counted. Appearing in the East Room of the White House at approximately 3:00 AM, Donald Trump said, “Frankly we did win. So we’ll be going to the U.S. Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop. As far as I’m concerned, we already did win.” And, I should add, Trump said this after Fox News had called the historically Republican state of Arizona for Biden, signaling that things were trending well for the former Vice President. As Chris Wallace said on Fox after Trump made his statement about having won, “This is an extremely flammable situation and the president just threw a match into it.”

The truth is, we don’t yet know who won, but things are looking positive for Biden at the moment, as ballots across the United States continue to be counted. As of this moment, Biden is leading in Wisconsin, Michigan and Nevada, and, if his lead in these states holds, he will have the 270 electoral votes he needs to claim victory, even if Pennsylvania and Georgia go to Trump. And there’s still a good chance that Biden could win in those states as well.

As for the Senate, things are still up in the air, as we’re waiting to hear how things go in a number of states, including Michigan, where Democratic Senator Gary Peters is presently trailing his Republican challenger. If things play out the way people think that they will, the best case scenario for Democrats is a split Senate, with 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans, in which Kamala Harris would be in the position to cast tie-breaking votes as the Vice President. This, however, would require not only that Peters win, but that Warnock win his run-off in Georgia… In order to have gained control of the Senate outright, the Democrats would have needed to pick up four seats, and, with Doug Jones losing in Alabama, that became even more of an uphill battle. Still, though, the Democrats appear to be picking up seats in Arizona, Colorado and Georgia. [There were two Georgia Senate races this election cycle.] And it’s conceivable that North Carolina, Maine and Iowa could still be in play.

One last thing. Just keep in mind, when you hear Donald Trump complaining about the counting of mail-in ballots, that we have Republican legislatures to thank. The following is from USA Today’s Kirsten Powers.

So, no, there are no “surprise ballot dumps (being) counted” as Donald Trump just claimed. The ballots being counted are ballots that were lawfully cast, and are now being counted in accordance with rules established by Republican legislatures. There is nothing “magical” about what it happening. Absentee ballots were cast, and now they are being counted.

update: Here’s the Detroit Free Press weighing in on Trump’s claim that Michigan flipped for Biden because of a massive “ballot dump.” That’s not true, they report.

update: Jonathan Oosting is reporting that the Trump campaign is seeking to stop the count in Michigan. The Trump campaign, he says, has put out the following statement: “We have filed suit today in the Michigan Court of Claims to halt counting until meaningful access has been granted.”

update: Another response to Trump’s assertion that “Michigan has now found the ballots” to change the course of the election.

This won’t be a popular take, probably, but: if Biden wins, it will be an achievement. The campaign will have (barely) overcome the most sustained assault on voting rights in recent memory and the largest disinformation operation—conservative media—in American history.

The REASON Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin didn’t count their votes earlier is because the REPUBLICAN LEGISLATURES WOULDN’T LET THEM.

Most of these votes were cast weeks ago.

They’re going to be counted. And Biden is going to win.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said final results are likely by Wednesday night.

“At least 5.26 million ballots were cast overall, a record that surpassed the 2008 vote, when Barack Obama won the state. More than 60% of the votes were cast by absentee ballot.

Turnout in heavily Democratic Detroit was expected to be close to 55%, the highest in two decades.

About 28,000 voters took advantage of same-day voter registration, which was offered in Michigan for the first time in a presidential election.”

Looks like there will be an automatic recount in Wisconsin. They require one if the vote is within 1%, Biden is just shy of winning by 1%. I don’t know what the law is in Michigan on recounts. Unless it has changed since 2016 there is no automatic recount. So there will be lawsuits pretty quickly here, maybe later today.

Whew. I am still worried for Peters but am starting to let myself breathe a little. I won’t be ok though until the other states are in.

There wasn’t the great blue turn out I was hoping for but the good news there may be that if the GOP can see that greater turnout doesn’t necessarily lead to losses on their part, maybe they can stop keeping people from voting?

Cori Bush, a BLM organizer, has won a seat in Missouri in the House. In my mind at least The Squad just gained a member! She is the first black woman Missouri has sent to the House.

Sarah McBride won her race in Deleware which means we get our first transgendered Senator!

The ranked-choice voting in Maine didn’t seem to ruin things for anyone. Hopefully, that will help people be less afraid of it!

McCormack and Welch won spots on Michigan’s Supreme Court ending an era of conservative control!

Oh and this one is for HW, it looks like marijuana was the big winner with some states making recreational use legal and even Mississippi making medicinal use legal! So there you go, something to be happy about even for Trumpers!

What’s the GOP platform again? Oh that’s right they don’t have one. They have a person, Trump. Cult of Personality. The argument for tyrannical strongmen is as simplistic as your argument for Trump. In the end he’s implementing aggressively the dismantling of government and tightening borders. He’s a nativist. (That’s being kind) And if you like that, you like him. If you like that you have bought into a bunch of garbage blaming the marginalized for all social ills instead of the system. But that tribalism/othering is a well documented element of the slide to tyranny.

What Biden stands for is a return to core American principles rather than relying on core American failings (white supremacy, nativism, punitive, moralistic puritanism, and militarism) which, in essence, is what Trump stands for.

The Republican Party has only won the popular vote once in the last 8 national elections. That was 2004 when they had to gin up a war in Iraq, and were still mobilizing us for more wars. I will give Trump credit for not doing what Bush did. That was the start of the Republican transformation into a death cult. Trump simply lacked the courage, integrity, and desire to do anything but magnify the Trump brand. He will go down in history as one of the weakest Presidents kinda on par with Buchanan or Ford. This will not be remembered as the Trump era, it will be the McConnell era. He set policy and determined what legislation happened and who got the tax cuts. If the Democrats fail to take control of the Senate, we are looking at 4 years like the last 6 of the Obama regime, lots of feel good (and some short term benefit) executive orders–but no progressive legislation. Time to start looking at which Senators are up for reelection in 2020.

It is my (now confirmed) theory that you believe the people in the State Department who you *happen* to know and who *happen* to align themselves with Maddow and yourself…I think it is interesting that I knew that about you even though you still don’t quite get it :)

Maybe it was Lynne? Maybe I misinterpreted her? Maybe she meant there are just more Uncle Toms than she thought? After all it is a term the White Princess has attached to black people—who had the audacity to disagree with the official White Princess viewpoint.

The total vote was actually over 159,800,000.

Biden didn’t do as well with Black and Hispanic men. Big deal. Like all black or Hispanic men are the same. And like it is the winning strategy to appeal to the maximum number of black men, Hispanic men, white men, or any specific racial, gender, or otherwise group identity demographic. What matters is appealing to a majority of the voters regardless of demographic markup of that majority.

That is the ideal, I think. It does not at all match up with the actual Dem strategy though does it? The strategy is identity politics all day, everyday.

Native Americans, as members of sovereign nations within our borders, are very very suspicious of big government. They have been predominantly GOP voters for a long time. That changed with Obama and it may change again with Biden if he establishes similar trust and actually solicits/listens to tribal policy priorities and concerns. Like Obama did.

I’m all for more minority dispersal among the parties, All parties should be vying for their vote by better serving them. It will only make our country and our parties stronger.

The Dem party needs to serve communities of. Olie not lean on them.

Again, Annoying Gadfly, Biden has gotten the largest majority of the vote since 1900. I think Dems are doing just fine. It’s not bad news that our country is becoming more integrated in beliefs and viewpoints.

Trying to pigeonhole people of any race or ethnicity is antiquated thinking. Populations are becoming less homogenous. That’s not a bad thing. Getting support from a majority is a good thing. The more diverse te support for any particular candidate or viewpoint, is a good thing.

FF— militarism is different than fundamental support for military service and a non isolationist foreign policy. You love a dictionary. Look it up.

Trump is a militarist. A hard power only leader who loves a show of power and has almost completely dismantled US diplomatic capacity by gutting the State Dept. Biden is at heart a diplomat. Yes that makes him almost necessarily a moderate. It’s my belief that only a moderate had a chance to win this thing in the current fear-basted climate .

No, Wisconsin voter turnout did not jump from 67% in 2016 to 89% in 2020

    IF YOUR TIME IS SHORT

This claim is based on bad math, not reality.
Turnout is measured as a percentage of eligible voters, not registered voters.

Trump Jr.’s figures use eligible voters for the 2016 figure but registered voters for 2020.

Using the proper denominator for 2020 shows a turnout around 72%, firmly in the range of past presidential elections.

The Wisconsin vote turn out between 2016 and 2020 is explained by the absence of a voter suppression effort by the State Government. I posted a link to Greg Palast and his work a while back. He explains it quite clearly. In 2016 the state purged 10 of thousands of minority voters from the polls. Thousands of “provisional” ballots were cast that were never counted because of this purge. The Democratic control of the AG and SOS offices meant that the partisan purge program the Republicans used with great effect in 2016 was ditched in favor of a much better program to identify dead and moved voters.

You such an ass Jean. Why not just give a fuller explanation of your particular use of the term? Militarism, imo, often also implies the belief in the USE of the military to forward perceived interests. If you are using the term as way to distinguish Trump from others then that is odd because he is the first president in a while to not enter us into a war.

Your definition is more narrow than most dictionaries and imo opinion more narrow than everyday usage. Look at other dictionaries. Look at Wikipedia…

The reason I make fun of you for saying you don’t like dictionaries is because you also rely on them in your bullshitty arguments. Think about it. When is the last time I quoted a dictionary? But you do it a lot….

There might be a discrepancy, at any given time, between what I think Jean means and what Jean means. That discrepancy is not solved by pointing at an overly narrow definition. It is solved by a bit more conversation—jackass.

FF, being a dolt it took me awhile to figure out I was wrong to give Trump credit for not starting a war. After reflection on the past year, he did everything he could to provoke the Iranians into a shooting war. The assassination of Suileman almost got the shooting war he wanted. It may very well be impeachment saved us, that and some restraint by the Iranians.

PS I use dictionary definitions with you because you believe they are incontrovertible. At least when it supports your POV.
I’m happy to never use them again. If ppl can’t agree on the meaning of a term, there’s no sense making any kind of argument around it, is there? It’s irresolvable.

The definition I supplied for militarism makes my statement accurate.

    JH,

You are really bad at identifying issues and points of agreement. An aspect of militarism is funding the military—duh. Another aspect is using the military to further perceived interests—duh. I disagree that the administration Biden was a part, 4 years ago, can be a point of distinction between the Trump administration because Obama/Biden did heavily find the military and did enter into additional foreign conflicts. Trump heavily funded the military but started zero new wars.

    Learn how to think!
