Donald Trump refers to Americans who died in war as “losers” and “suckers”

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, as we all heard Donald Trump say “I like people who weren’t captured” about former prisoner of war John McCain in 2015, but The Atlantic is reporting today that the President’s disdain for men and women in uniform goes far deeper. Here’s how the article, written by Jeffrey Goldberg, begins.

Former marine and Associated Press investigative reporter James LaPorta, when he first read the Atlantic article, didn’t believe it. He didn’t think it was conceivable that a President of the United States would call the more than 1,800 marines who died fighting the Nazis a Belleau Wood “suckers” for getting killed. LaPorta, however, as you can see here, then reached out to his sources and confirmed the story in its entirety. Donald Trump, he determined, had indeed cancelled a planned trip to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018 citing the fact that the dead U.S. marines buried their were “suckers” for fighting the Nazis and getting killed. [As you’ll recall, Donald Trump made up an injury to avoid service during the Vietnam War.]

For what it’s worth, Donald Trump, while refusing to attend the memorial at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, did find the energy to show up for an event the next day to greet Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Here’s a photo from that event.

Trump, defending himself from these charges earlier today, said that he respected the military, and never disparaged John McCain’s service. “I never called John McCain a loser,” he said. Here, however, is Donald Trump in 2015, himself retweeting an article entitled, “Donald Trump: John McCain is ‘A Loser'”.

Thankfully, it seems as some people are taking this seriously. Here, for instance, is retired Major General Paul Eaton announcing that he will be voting for Joe Biden come November. And it would appear as though he won’t be alone. According to recent polling, Trump’s support among active duty military seems to be slipping. According to a poll just conducted by the Military Times, 49.9% of the 1,018 active duty troops they surveyed in July and August had an unfavorable opinion of Donald Trump, compared with just 38% who had a favorable opinion.

It should have been enough in 1989, when Donald Trump called for the execution of the Central Park Five. It should have been enough in 2015, when Donald Trump said that McCain was “not a war hero.” It should have been enough in 2016, when Donald Trump said that he grabbed women “by the pussy” without their consent. We’ve always known who this man is. He’s told us repeatedly.

It’s the nature of confirmation bias that, presented with information contradicting the preferred narrative, people will dig deeper into their belief system rather than reconsider their position.

So HW is right but not for the reason stated.

The only way to defeat Trump is to GOTV. Especially in tight states like Michigan. There are more of us, but there were 3 million more of us in 2016 and he still won.

Anyone looking for ways to do more than just vote (Not enough) can call their county Democratic Party Or local Biden campaign office or look here. https://linktr.ee/WhenWeAllVote

Just a quick fact check the American Marines who died at Belleau Woods did not die fighting Nazis. Rather they died defending France from good old fashion imperialism in 1918. Not really much difference between imperialism and fascism. Some would say fascism is always the face of imperialism it is just not always obvious in the homeland.

It’s fascinating that the great critic of logic so often employs the logical form of syllogism without any concern for truth.

People who have a strong impulse for confirmation bias dig their heels in; HW digs his heels in; therefore HW is a person who has a strong impulse for confirmation bias.

A proper order would be to first prove that HW was wrong about Russian collusion and then from there you can speculate about the psychological reasons which account for his error. Good fucking luck with that Jean!

To the extent that Jean does not trust logic she should distrust herself. Because she so often misuses it. It’s her instinct to misuse logic as far as I can tell.

But what do I know? My parents did not meet at Harvard.

FF–The proper order would not be to first or in anyway address HW’s unrelated straw man argument meant to divert from the one at hand. Again you all abuse the logical chain of argument requirement by extending the chain endlessly into the past and asking us to disprove something unrelated.

Digging heels in /vs/ taking pause

If you realize you are wrong a lot then you should take pause. Especially given the unconfirmed nature of this report. People with severe cases of confirmation bias do not take pause even when they are proven wrong a lot.

You might consider that the reason HW is digging his heals in is, to use your phrase, is because NORMAL PEOPLE dig their heels in when they know they have been correct a lot… HW has been correct that MSM is willing to lie wherever it might benefit the Dems and hurt Trump. There were articles about defunding it 8 months ago so this is not exactly new. I suspect there are some very serious games going on regarding the military and the elections. November is going to get fucking weird! I am very worried about it. The Military Times has been odd for awhile—although it is something I barely look at once a month…I hope EOS is right about there not being an anti-Trump sentiment. Your statement that the “Military Industrial Complex” thinks and acts as one entity sounds sloppy. If we look at the enlisted and commissioned that are components of this “complex”, are they in it for the power? Or are they in it out of a sense of honor and duty to country?

Perhaps you are really referring to another 6 or so fellas that are pulling the levers somewhere at undisclosed locations, plotting ways to sell more weapons to anyone willing to buy? If that is the case, I’d think they would be thrilled with Trump helping with contracts to sell billions worth to the Saudis.

This storyline about Stars and Stripes is new to me. I don’t recall ever reading the magazine. The initiation of this 8 months ago falls within recent events and Trump’s supervision. It was of little value even for soldiers who were overseas before the age of the Internet. I can’t imagine anyone who has Internet access would bother to read it today.

I don’t know anything about why Trump wants to shut it down now. Can’t imagine that anyone would miss it. I thought it was written by enlisted soldiers who wrote what their officers told them. Maybe some AP stories. I don’t know what it costs to publish but am sure the military can find better use for the money.

Using the broad term MIC is sloppy too. Part of the reason I vote for one person or another hinges on whether or not I think they will cause more or less war. I agreed with Tulsi’s exaggerated claim that Hillary is the Queen of war mongers. Trump has show restraint. There were a couple of times I felt like Dems were trying to make him look soft if he was unwilling to use his military more. Strange times. In general, I think Trump wants to be less interventionist and that is a good thing, imo. These things are hard to know….Yet we still need to cast a vote….

I am still trying to figure out why the Dems want 2 people destined to be puppets….For what purpose?

Could Jessie win Alaska? Could he cause an otherwise solid red state to come into play? Any ideas?

  53. Frosted Flakes
    Posted September 4, 2020 at 3:01 pm | Permalink

Generally though I didn’t mean to say all the MIC interests are all aligned. Like everyone is not sitting around a table planning stuff. There are overlapping interests with many shared and unshared variables that, taken on the whole, added up and balanced against eachother, effectively favor one candidate or the other. Trump is unpredictable. Biden seems like a puppet. Large industries that manufacture want stability…

Sloppy as hell. But that is what I think.

The thing that I worry about is the military and the elections….I am very worried. It seems like there is a disconnect between what I believe about the military and their views on Trump (see EOS’ opinion) and what is being reported their views are. I noticed this months ago through lightly and sparingly reading Military Times. I am speaking at the level of feeling and intuition mostly because I don’t know enough and it is complex.

Things are being set up so that the results are going to perceived as illegitimate either way. Scary scary stuff.

The project had this to say over a month ago,

In addition, the exercises suggest that there is a significant possibility of simultaneous street mobilizations by both Trump and Biden supporters, in which case the possibility for violence will increase significantly, and the actions of law enforcement will become critical. Of note here: TIP’s scenario exercise suggest that President Trump and his more fervent supporters have every incentive to try to turn peaceful pro- Biden (or anti-Trump) protests violent in order to generate evidence that a Democratic victory is tanta- mount to “mob rule.” In the recent past, President Trump has on numerous occasions called on “Second Amendment people” to defend their rights and has called on his supporters to “liberate” states with re- strictive COVID-19-related rules. Trump can rely on surrogates to embed operatives inside protests to en- courage violent action, and he can mobilize a range of law enforcement actors (including National Guard troops, whether federalized or under the control of GOP governors) who might, without proper training or if led by politicized actors, escalate matters. In some scenarios examined by TIP, Team Trump succeeded in invoking the Insurrection Act and sending active duty military troops into US cities to “restore order,” “protect” voting places, or confiscate “fraudulent” ballots.

In my attempt to escape the insanity of our plague state managed by a death cult, I fired up the old (60+) hallicrafter S 40B tonight. Have not turned the juice on to it for at least 15 years. The glow of the tubes was soothing in itself. I remembered it could take a while for the machine to warm up. Reception is always better once the sun sets anyway, so waiting was no big deal.
I wondered as I waited would I find Radio Havana, Bejing, Sydney, Mumbai? I knew there would be plenty of holly rollers, and once I began tuning in I was not disappointed. I learned to watch out for Jesuit communist sndGlobalization is the work of satan. Ultimately I found The Bejing. Radio Hour-an English language broadcast. I learned who won the US Open tennis championship, some Grand Prix, the scores, winning pitchers and game highlights of Chinese Major League Baseball. The Bejing Film Festival begins this week. This first film festival since the covid outbreak.
Found Radio Havana, maybe instructions will be forthcoming.

EOS beat you and Q to that story by about a week. But true to form, EOS chose to protect the Republican pedophiles. Thank you for not following suit.

Those of us who’ve been tuned in all of our adult lives have been well aware of these monsters and have watched this growing list that entire time.

The list is a many decades long accumulation, though the come-lately reposters don’t share dates to make it seem like a news alert. It makes me ask, “Where have you all been?”

So it isn’t quite the earthshaking breaking news the dipshits who just crawled out from under their rocks would like to believe it to be. Many, many dedicated law-enforcement and child-protection advocates have been fighting this war for a very long time. They’ve been doing all the work, not just seeking some sort of political advantage from it. They’re the heroes.

It is however very true that skeletons provide a very valuable leash for “special” interests in controlling their favorite officeholders. It’s a very common phenomenon about which the general public has only had a very limited awareness or understanding.

iRobert, come on! Men like HW and Bob know darn well that THEY don’t have child rapists as friends even though a full quarter of women have been molested before they turn 18. I guess HW thinks that this is because there are men who rape hundreds of girls but actually it turns out that most child molesters know their victims well. Usually, it is a father, grandfather, uncle, stepfather, or other relatives. It isn’t Democrats who are the problem. It is MEN who are the problem. Or mostly. I guess in the interest of fairness, I will say that 4% of child molesters are women. Naturally, Bob will think it feminist extremism for a woman to point out that 96% of child rapists are men. I wonder what the percentage is of men who are sexist assholes who minimize child rape? 100% of Bobs and HWs fall into that category. They are garbage who effectively condone child rape through denial.

I don’t know what the number is but we almost all know a child molestor or rapist, imo. Everybody probably knows several, imo. However, I disagree with Lynne’s impulse to assign the blame almost entirely on men because: 1) I suspect the estimated 4% adult women molestors is very very off because adolescent boys/ girls, will tend to not report being victimized by women as often due to cultural reasons although the impact might be something they carry around for their lifetime; 2) I also think the victimizing of boys by adult men is also underreported for cultural reasons—that is I think there is cultural pressure for boys to stay silent or be in denial about it in a way that is not there for girls.

I am not sure if I am expressing myself clearly. I just think there is a huge danger when someone like Lynne misplaces almost all the blame almost entirely on men. I actually think her overly simplified narrative could actually be detrimental toward breaking the raped/ raper cycle. Lynne’s overly simplified narrative is in my opinion just another example of unhelpful sexism from her. Sorry Lynne.

I dont have a clue what the statistics are, but almost all males are reared by woman. Almost all males spend the first decade of their lives almost exclusively under the control of mothers and teachers.
I would not blame a whole gender for creating sexist, mysoginistic rapist. I might think our culture might have some serious issues, which relying on scapegoats and shaming are unlikely to be effective in changing that culture reality.

You never answered what percentage of men you think do it. I think it stands to reason that most sex offenders don’t stop at one victim so to assume a 1 to 1 ratio of victims and perps or anything close to that doesn’t add up. Therefore to claim that you can guarantee that everyone is friends with a pedo perp is incredibly stupid.

They are around. Some of them are people you would never suspect. Many are people who hold office, sit on boards, etc…

I don’t know the average number of victims of sex offenders but I know that it is often limited to the members of a single household. Sure there are some like those priests or boy scout leaders or Epstein who had hundreds but I suspect it is more likely to be one or two in most cases. Yet if even 10% of men account for that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys who are molested, a conservative guess mind you, odds are that you have a man in your social network who has molested children.

  90. Posted September 7, 2020 at 8:11 pm | Permalink

FF– The CDC keeps records of self-reported sexual abuse. That’s the basis of Lynne’s statistics. What’s yours?

It may be the case that men are less likely to report their abuse on surveys (many believe that’s the case) but my guess is they’d be even less likely to report abuse by men than women. Of course you and I are both speculating here, while Lynne is employing statistics derived from comprehensive and scientifically designed and vetted studies. .

I thought I was making it clear that I *BELIEVE* statutory rape of young men by adult females is way underreported. Thus, in making that claim, I am also implying that I *BELIEVE* the stats are not a reflection of reality. I think there are reasons that category of statutory rape is underreported…In expressing that belief I am not trying to diminish or make light of the trauma or confusion that might enter the life of young person who was statutory raped by an older female predator. Jesus! Fuck off. I am saying the opposite. I think our culture downplays that category. I think that is a problem….I agree that men do the most raping and molesting….I just think the whole thing is a cycle that needs to be broken and I take the whole thing very seriously.

You all know Im pretty slow, not the dullest knife in the drawer, but.
We have probably not evolved much in the last 10,000 years—that is not much time in the grand scheme of things.
Our earliest stories all revolve around “conspiracies”. In the old days, before we knew better we explained what we now know are stochastic events, as the manipulations and conspiracies of the gods.
Human conspiracies exist, we know this, many many of us been involved in one kind of conspiracies or another After all planning a surprise party for a loved one frequently involves subterfuge and dissembling the truth.
HW is simply relying upon are old pantheon of tools to help explain his reality. EOS does the same without the 20th century flourishes.
We have much to learn from the past, it is a shame I did not learn to read Sumerian, there are 10 of thousands of clay tablets to translate yet—real job security for the handful of folks who know the language.

The earliest Discovered urban center in Syria is much different than those that came later. It seems as if several thousand of us lived together as one huge family. When excavating the gravesites (which was in the same corner of every habitat) multiple mitochondrial DNA lines are discovered among the remains. Jean,

It would be better if you more specific. This is a serious topic of conversation. “Well one must wonder” is such a vague and juvenile thing to say given the subject matter.

There are different legal categories of rape that bring with them different sentencing guidelines. Our legal system seems different categories as more and less deserving of harsh penalties but all categories of rape are all horrible—obviously. I said post pubescent boy/ adult female statutory rape is probably the least horrible but I still think it is horrible. Do you think molesting prepubescent children is less horrible or something? Exactly the same amount of horrible? WTF is your point other than trying to pretend I think there is a class of rape that is not horrible. Fuck off dipshit.

The entire point of me talking about that specific class of rape is I think it is very prevalent but overlooked and that is a bad thing for the victims and for our society. Seriously. What is your point? All you are doing is demonstrating (again) that you are mean spirited bullshitter with no logic….Why would you try to twist my words here given the seriousness of the topic? It is indicative of something about you that you would rather score a point then to have an honest exchange about something that has victimized so many. What is that something? WELL ONE MUST WONDER…
