Today in our upside-down hell world: an accusation of treason, claims of a plot to steal the election, more lies about the pandemic, and a warning about Christians being forced to “recant” their faith

[above: Donald Trump repeats the absurd, dangerous and scientifically laughable lie that our COVID-19 infection rates are only rising because we’re testing more. In reality, cases are rising because Donald Trump has purposely slowed testing, pushed states to reopen prematurely, and politicized the wearing of masks. Full stop. And, as a result, the United States ranks 26th in the world in COVID-19 tests per 1 million people, and 9th in deaths per 1 million. And, no, people aren’t dying more here just because we’re testing more. That’s not how it works.]

I’m not in the business of making predictions, but, for those of you wondering what this election season may have in store for us, now that Trump now starting to slide in the polls and lose evangelical voters to Joe Biden, I think it’s safe to assume that it’s going to get pretty fucking dark.

Today alone, Donald Trump accused Barack Obama of having committed treason, said yet again that Democrats are in the process of “rigging” the election against him, and signed an executive order to further limit immigration in an attempt to shore up support on the racist right… Oh, and one of his attorneys put out a statement saying that she will not “recant” her Christian faith when the godless, liberal hoards come for her. [She just said that “they” would be coming for her, but it was clear what she meant.]

So, yeah, the President of the United States is accusing a beloved Democratic leader of a crime that’s punishable by death, suggesting that, if he loses, it will have been because of coordinated voter fraud, and laying the groundwork for a full-on civil war pitting the decent, white Christians of our nation against the law and order-hating criminals that make up the godless, non-white left. [The new vote-by-mail conspiracy theory has to do with the fact that some ballots are being printed outside of the United States.] But that’s not what I want to talk about today. No, I want to talk about the fact that, between now and Election Day, a whole lot more of us are going to die.

This past Wednesday, Donald Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity that COVID-19 was going to “fade away.” Since then, however, it’s done the opposite. It’s come back with a vengeance, especially in our southern and western states. According to analysis by NBC News, “In the last 14 days, Oregon has reported a 234.4 percentage jump in infections, Oklahoma jumped by 202 percent, Florida’s number increased by 155 percent, and Arizona’s confirmed coronavirus cases climbed by 142 percent.” And, no, this isn’t just because we’re testing more. More people are filling hospitals. And more people are dying.

From the New York Times:

…In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Dr. (Michael) Osterholm noted, “We’re at 70 percent of the number of cases today that we were at the very height of the pandemic cases in early April.”

He said that a wave and trough pattern of the virus rising and falling like influenza was one of the scenarios described in an April report that he helped to write. Now, however, the data on how the virus spreads do not support that pattern. “I don’t see this slowing down for the summer or into the fall,” he said.

“I think this is more like a forest fire,” he said. “I think that wherever there’s wood to burn, this fire is going to burn it”…

That’s it. I just wanted to let you all know that things are going to get a lot fucking worse, and that Donald “slow the testing down” Trump isn’t going to be any help with his anti-mask crusade and demands that states like ours — states that actually tried to stomp this out — be “liberated” by armed conservative activists.

I want to go on, but I’ll just leave you with this note from Arizona, where Republican Senator Martha McSally just proposed giving every taxpayer $4,000 each to take a vacation. That’s right, Republicans are actually encouraging travel during the pandemic.

This is a death cult, folks. We are living in a fucking death cult.

“A rule of thumb: If you’re lying about nonexistent voter fraud, if you’re limiting polling places, if you’re forcing people to line up to vote in a pandemic, even the old and the infirm, then it seems you’re basically admitting most Americans don’t want you to be president.”

NYT: Health Officials Had to Face a Pandemic. Then Came the Death Threats.

(Published June 22, 2020) Leaders of local and state health departments have been subject to harassment, personal insults and death threats in recent weeks, a response from a vocal and angry minority of the public who say that mask requirements and restrictions on businesses have gone too far.

One top health official, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, issued a statement on Monday condemning attacks on public health directors and disclosing that she faced repeated threats to her safety.

“The death threats started last month, during a Covid-19 Facebook Live public briefing when someone very casually suggested that I should be shot,” Dr. Ferrer said in a statement. “I didn’t immediately see the message, but my husband did, my children did, and so did my colleagues.”

“It is deeply worrisome,” she added, “to imagine that our hardworking infectious disease physicians, nurses, epidemiologists and environmental health specialists or any of our other team members would have to face this level of hatred.”

NYT: “A Plague of Willful Ignorance” by Paul Krugman

We’ve known for months what it takes to bring Covid-19 under control. You need a period of severe lockdown to reduce the disease’s prevalence. Only then can you reopen the economy — while maintaining social distancing as needed — and even then you need a regime of widespread testing, tracing and isolation of potentially infected individuals to keep the virus suppressed.

Most advanced countries have gone down this route. A few countries, like New Zealand and South Korea, have largely or completely defeated the coronavirus. The European Union, comparable in population and diversity to the United States, continues to record new cases of Covid-19, but at a far slower rate than at the pandemic’s peak in late March and early April.

But the United States is exceptional, in a very bad way. Our rate of new cases never declined all that much, because falling infection rates in the New York area were offset by flat or rising infections in the South and the West. Now cases are on the rise nationally and surging in such states as Arizona, Texas and Florida.

And no, reported infections aren’t rising just because we’re doing more testing; contra Donald Trump, we can’t solve this problem just by testing less. Other indicators, like the percentage of tests coming back positive and hospitalization rates, show that the Covid-19 surge is real.

It’s true that deaths are still falling for the nation as a whole, although they’re rising in some states. This reflects some combination of the way that deaths lag infections, better precautions for the elderly, who are the most vulnerable, and better treatment as doctors learn more about the disease.

But we’re still losing around 600 Americans per day — that is, we’re experiencing the equivalent of six 9/11s every month. And many people who aren’t killed by Covid-19 are nonetheless debilitated by the illness, sometimes permanently.

Why are we doing so badly? A lot of the answer is that many state governments have rushed to return to business as usual even though only a handful of states meet federal criteria for even the initial phase of reopening. Epidemiologists warned that premature reopening would lead to a new wave of infections — and they were right.

Beyond that, in America, and only in America, basic health precautions have been caught up in a culture war. Most obviously, not wearing a face mask, and hence gratuitously endangering other people, has become a political symbol: Trump has suggested that some people wear masks only to signal disapproval of him, and many Americans have decided that requiring masks in indoor spaces is an assault on their freedom.

As a result, social distancing has become partisan: self-identified Republicans do less of it than self-identified Democrats. We all saw how this plays out in Tulsa, where a large (if smaller than expected) crowd gathered, mostly without masks, in an indoor setting custom-designed to spread the coronavirus.

The experience in Italy provides a good example. Their “lockdown” was comprehensive, and strict. For weeks, virtually all businesses were closed, and people were forced to stay inside their homes, allowed to venture out for very limited reasons. The Italian people’s sacrifice was great – but ultimately, cases there declined dramatically, and now everything has mostly re-opened, and life is returning to normal.

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/world/europe/italy-coronavirus-cases.html

Here in the U.S., unfortunately, such an approach is impossible. Since the Federal Government has abrogated all responsibility for this crisis, we now have 50 different states each pursuing a different approach (albeit with no restrictions on travel or trade among them). Meanwhile, because so many ‘Merikans consider themselves rugged individualists (of the “Don’t Tread on Me” variety), a sizable minority refuse to follow even modest precautions (such as wearing masks or social distancing) – let alone consider stay home or restrict their activities.

The end result is that – by accident or design – as a society, we have collectively decided to accept a steady and ongoing rate of illness and death as the price we’re willing to pay to avoid making tough decisions, or accepting difficult choices.

Of course in this case, the risks and consequences don’t fall neatly or predictably. Some people’s “freedom” will result in OTHER people’s sickness and death. And – after all – isn’t causing some older people or those with underlying conditions (probably OTHER people’s friends and relatives, anyway …) to suffer and die a small price to pay for being able to being able to jet-ski, or hang out with friends in a bar?

    @ Wobblie

I agree with you about the parallel between America’s COVID-19 response, and an overly-broad interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, since both involve a similar (and unequal) trade-off in terms of freedom vs. consequences.

Too many Americans are too quick to demand their “rights” without understanding that each also comes with corresponding responsibilities, and consequences. Understanding and accepting this dynamic is the mark of maturity – whether as an individual, or as a society.

First the public needs to see what the dems want for our country: to destroy it, which is what they are doing now. The Cultural Revolution is in full swing. At least it is trying hard. Radicals are destroying history to create a totally false illusion in the future. It’s 1984 and you love it I’m sure.

No one wants to destroy the country. They want to smash the white patriarchy and that is the opposite of destroying the country. Also, no one is destroying history. I can’t even think why you would think that unless you are referring to people removing those confederate statues which never should have been erected in the first place because they give a false history where people like that deserve to be honored with statues.

But smashing the white patriarchy is communist propaganda. That’s exactly what they say. It’s purely to agitate against a country they openly state they want to destroy. I am somewhere between what HW is saying and what Lynne is saying. Thanks for sharing your views guys. My take is that average Dems do not want to destroy the country, rather they want to control it roughly as it is. Dems are not pushing for a Marxist utopia but they are willing to exploit young radical Marxist/neo Marxist idealists toward creating chaos and division between social identity groups because they think the more chaos there is the more it will help them in the election. I empathize with the radical youth. I was the radical youth. They are being used by powerful and dark forces.

“No one wants to destroy the country”

That is simply not true and quite naive, imo. It is a small minority in my opinion. They have no chance to actually accomplish their goal but they are capable of causing all kinds of harm to innocent people even if they are small in number.

The destruction of history is part of the formula I think. It is the reducing all of American history (and Western history) through the narrow lense of oppressor and oppressed.

Take a look at a current map of world slavery which is still happening now. How did Western countries fare so well in the noble goal of eradicating slavery within? Did we just export it? If so why is that not part of the conversation?

I would actually respect the average Dems a bit if they really wanted a revolution to achieve their utopian vision. They don’t really want that shit. The European nations abandoned their charges by jettisoned the slave colonies in the 19th century because it was not a positive economic proposition and granted those territories independence. The United States had geographic contiguity and was not able to wash its hands of the matter so conveniently.

I truly believe most BLM supporters are regular people with good intentions. It’s not about BLM specifically even though their founders have revealed that the are trained Marxist organizers. I don’t know the group affiliation of the people who tore down Grant and vandalized Cervantes. I do know that Shaun King recently encouraged the “tearing down” of stain glass windows everywhere depicting a white Jesus. I do know that Jean Henry does not think the statement ACAB is prejudicial. I also do believe Jean Henry, daughter of Harvard folk and Landlord, will likely not take the “I am not afraid of communism” challenge. The challenge is where your family gives away all its “blood money and assets” to less fortunate people and begins living off of $10k per year —which is the current median household income in the world. Do it now. Prove that you are not afraid of communism.

My thesis is that the absorption of the logic of neo Marxism leads to your nonsense and Shaun Kong’s nonsense.

Maybe Jean means she is not afraid of Marxism because she does not think it will happen here economically. Ok. I could agree with something like that but my point is that a person is playing a game if they are willing to use the Marxist economic logic, which they reject in the realm of economics, and apply the underlying logic to the propping up of cultural tribes in an attempt to secure votes for a capitalist candidate when doing so is relies on so many acts of sewing the seeds of division.

Can someone contact Lebron James for me? I would like him to come on ColuMbo.com forum to discuss his contract with the Nike corporation and their sweatshops. We can talk about brown lives matter too. It will be a great conversation, I promise.

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if it turned out that Shaun King really is a fake black guy and he is the one calling for the tearing down of white Jesus stain glass church windows?

You commie-capitalist-honky-clowns are a hoot. Honk honk.
