Trump nearly doubling his death toll estimate, continues to urge states to reopen despite official White House guidelines

On Fox News yesterday, Donald Trump, after making the ridiculous case that he’s been “treated worse” than Abraham Lincoln, said that, in his opinion, it is now safe to re-open society. He then went on to say that, by the time all of this is over, the COVID-19 death toll in the United States could reach 100,000. As he was on Fox News at the time, he wasn’t pushed too hard, but this was a significant increase over his last public prediction, which was that around 65,000 American citizens would lose their lives to the virus. As for why he’s now changing his tune, it could have something to do with a newly released draft report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which projects that, by June 1, nearly 3,000 people will be dying each and every day as a result of the highly transmittable illness — an illness which Donald Trump said he had “totally under control” back in February.

Here is the graph from the report by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing the anticipated deaths in our future.

Why the President of the United States, knowing that this is on the horizon, would be urging states to weaken social distancing safeguards, and condoning the armed protests taking part across the country by his supporters, who are apparently intent on regaining the right to die alone on ventilators for their loved ones, is absolutely beyond me. What’s clear, however, is that Donald Trump wants to have it both ways. As Marcy Wheeler points out in the following tweet, he wants to force states to reopen, but, at the same time, he also wants to be able to point to the official White House stance on social distancing, so that, when the deaths start multiplying, he can say that his administration never wavered in their view that a lockdown was necessary.

So, just three days ago, we saw our worst one-day death toll since all of this started. [The World Health Organization reported that 2,909 people in the United States died of COVID-19 on Thursday, breaking the previous record of 2,471, which had been set on April 23.] And, today, the New York Times is reporting that, based on government modeling, we’ll likely be seeing “about 200,000 new cases each day by the end of the month, up from about 25,000 cases now.” And, in spite of this, Donald Trump was tweeting this morning not about the need to remain calm and listen to local public heath officials, but his own polling, and the fact that he was finally getting the credit he so justly deserved for his handling of this public health emergency. “Getting great reviews, finally, for how well we are handling the pandemic,” he posted. But, even worse than the pathetic narcissism is the fact that he continues to push people on the subject of reopening America… building on his recent, thinly-veiled calls to violence, urging his followers to “Liberate” their states.

What started with bold statements about how, if it were up to him, the states would be open, and photo-ops of him in front of giant “Opening Up America Again” signs, hasn’t diminished in response to the constant warnings of public health professionals. Sure, Trump, when he speaks about coronavirus, may now include a caveat about how people should wear masks, but, at the same time, he’s celebrating the actions of those who don’t. Instead of calling out his armed supporters, who are marching mask-less on their state capitols, shouting in the faces of law enforcement officers, and violating all social distancing and safety guidelines, he’s defending them, and encouraging local leaders to bend to their will.

In response to the armed protest in Michigan last week, which you can see in the above photo, Donald Trump tweeted that our Governor should “give a little,” adding that these men with their assault weapons are “very good people” who just “want their lives back again.” And, since then, he’s said of protesters everywhere, “See them, talk to them, make a deal.” And deals are being made. Whereas other countries have pretty much stopped the spread of COVID-19, our death toll is continuing to rise, and now, in large part part due to the President’s intervention, no doubt, more than half of our governors have rolled back restrictions intended to slow the spread of the virus.

I’ve said before that I’ve reconciled myself to the fact that everyone I know will eventually get COVID-19. I just don’t see ours as a nation capable of doing what other nations have done to stop the spread of the disease. I don’t see the American people ever assenting, for instance, to have contact tracking software placed on their cellphones. I thought, however, that we could at least be sane enough to follow the guidance of public heath professionals, and slow the spread of the virus, thereby giving our frontline health care workers, and our at-risk populations, a fighting chance.

Apparently, though, that’s not the kind of country that we are. I shouldn’t be surprised. We are, after all, a country that continues to allow for the legal sale of assault weapons in spite of repeated school shootings and the like. We aren’t big on evidence or logic when it comes up against the myth of American individualism. Watching the Canadians do the right thing the other day, and outlaw the use, transport, sale, import and purchase of 1,500 models of military-style weapons, kind of brought things back into focus for me. They had one terrible massacre, and, like the people of Australia before them, they did the right thing and immediately ended it. We, however, keep right on going, in spite of Sandy Hook, and Parkland, Los Vegas, and all the others. It’s just who we are.

A majority of us apparently just don’t give a shit about community, or science, or reality, or just doing the right thing. When it comes down to it, we only really care about the myth of rugged individualism, the unfettered ability to exploit resources in the quest to make money, and the freedom to do whatever the fuck that we want. And, to be honest, I guess that’s worked to our benefit for a while. We’re good at pushing boundaries, exploiting opportunities, and finding new ways to either extract value from people or kill them. And, up until now, maybe it’s worked to our advantage. I sincerely think, when you tally up all the good, and all the bad, the United States has a reasonably good track record. [Sure, there was slavery, genocide and the atom bomb, but there was also jazz music, defeating Hitler, reaching the moon, pubic education, moving from slavery to having a black president, inventing the fucking middle class, etc.] But I have to wonder if our moment is over. We may have gotten to a point, I fear, where the things that we value may be antithetical to what the world needs. How, after all, can a country that keeps pumping out assault weapons, even as our children are being murdered in their schools, be expected to address something as large and complicated as global climate change? [We can’t even spend a month on the couch watching Netflix when the lives of our elderly are at stake.]

We have armed people in the fucking streets right now, demanding their right to ride jet skis. And they’re doing it knowing full well that tens of thousands of American citizens are dying. It just doesn’t fucking matter. We can’t be bothered… A security guard working at a Family Dollar store in Flint was just shot and killed for telling a customer to wear a face mask. And, in Holly, a man shopping at a Dollar Tree wiped his nose on an employee yesterday when he was asked to do the same thing. I know there are good things about this country of ours, but, by and large, I fear we’re a nation of self-important, magical-thinking, sociopaths. And we’re now paying the price for it.

If we live through this, there sure as hell better be a reckoning on the other side. We need to confront a lot of shit about ourselves — like the Germans and Japanese had to do after WWII — and we need to have a comprehensive plan to move forward. And I don’t just mean that we need to institute national health care, and get the money out of politics. I mean we need to confront all of this bullshit in such a way that we never, ever forget it. We need mandatory classes on media literacy. We need a new Smithsonian museum dedicated to the critical exploration of Trumpism. We need a massive campaign to…

OK, I’ve been at this too long. I need to stop. I just can’t believe that our hospitals are going to be hit by another wave, and that other people will lose friends and loved ones, the way that I have. It’s just all so absolutely unnecessary. I want to think the best of our country, and say with some conviction that we’re better than this. But the truth is, I don’t think that we are. I don’t think it’s in our collective nature to do the right thing. And, sadly, a lot of people are going to die as a result.

update: He’s still at it. Here he is saying once again that we need to open the country, even though he hasn’t yet provided a proper testing infrastructure.

It’s a challenge to stay positive in the face of all this Idiocracy. My Canuckastan friends, observing the US remotely with great trepidation, have been declaring that we’ve irreversibly passed “peak humanity” for quite a while now.

But let’s focus on the now and stop this virus. The people have to lead from below and overcome the destructive treason of the orange administration. Strictly adhere to State of Michigan social distance guidance and ignore the treasonous noise from the orange pie hole. It’s on us. No leader, or magic sky man, is going to swoop in and save us.

The weird thing about now is I remember vividly the Trump inauguration speech where he discussed how bad things were in America for Americans in a way that was almost unrecognizable despite our problems. And now he has managed to make that vision a reality.

Who would have thought it might be important to have a competent, sane person in charge? Nobody could have seen this coming.

On an unrelated note, that evil Democrat Party was out to get the president from long before he took office, and for no reason. They just have Trump derangement syndrome. Some people just hate him for no reason.

I am not a Republican. I just can’t take the Democratic Party serious at this point. It is difficult to take anybody serious who takes them serious. They are a complete disaster. Look at the Dems of Ann Arbor. Educated and supposedly competent yet they fail to lead their own lives in a way that leads toward social distancing. They are not doing it in their neighborhoods at all. My hope was this last weekend was anomaly because of the nice weather…

Tim– the shooting in Flint (which happened as you described) was perpetrated by a Black father and son against a Black man. Chances are string this had nothing to do with Trump or Lansing and a lot to do with distrust of government and madness.

The US is failing miserably in addressing this disease. That’s partly Trump and partly that we are a bunch of spoiled assholes who have forgotten ahow to act for the collective well being.

The social distancing was being proudly ignored in Whitmore Lake and Brighton and in Ann Arbor. This is kind of a universal at this point. We just think we’re immune. The governor showed some ‘nuance’ ad FF requested and dialed back a few things and everyone went nuts ignoring all advice.

FF has not acknowledged how incredibly wrong he was. He has simply chosen to attack A2 liberals for non-compliance … while defending protectors in Lansing. His double standard is showing… again.

I almost called out the butcher at the local grocery store for standing in the open chatting 2′ away from a friend/customer in his white coat with no mask and no gloves. I’m glad I didn’t. I just called the owner and said I would no longer shop there. My son wanted a burger. He didn’t get one.

Individuals are either going to take it seriously or they are not. Regardless of their education level or political affiliation. I hear a lot about the deplorable protestors making things worse. Not really. I am not in position to assess how all of the Communities of MI are responding to loosened restrictions. I see multiple workers in a truck and I think that is a stupid decision but I also think Whitmer should have addressed that issue. NY did early on. Not sure if they still have the one worker per truck rule. I am in a position to witness that the liberal laptop employed class, who is able to socially isolate with near perfect isolation, while still earning an income—and yet many choose not to. Too many, in my opinion are taking unnecessary risks out of choice because they enjoy social activity! That is a reality I witness daily. I certainly would prefer we allow risk when there is more of a need like running a business rather than a mere want born out of a desire to enjoy oneself during the pandemic.

Aloha, for health reasons I take two or three mile plus walks through town every day. Here in Ypsi I see any where from 70 to 90 percent of folks wearing masks when they are out walking. Most people cross street or move into street to allow for pedestrian social distancing.

This past weekend was clearly different. More young people gathering together. Looked to me like the beginning of the end of stay at home. Today though it is cooler and I saw lots fewer people out and about. I think the vast majority of folks are trying to behave socially responsibly here in Ypsi. But since we have already forcing more and more folks back to work, it is only a matter of time before the streets and social spaces fill up with people.

I am hopefully not going to see too many folks other than during my daily walks so I won’t be able to report any infractions. Health care providers in our state are suing the governor to block her emergency powers overreach. Her actions are reducing the health of our State’s citizens. How can she order nursing homes who have at risk populations to co-house the infected? Families can’t visit but infected patients can be placed in an adjacent room, separated only by a plastic sheet, and cared for by the same personnel. How insane is this policy? Close shelters that were constructed specifically for COVID patients so that nursing homes are forced to admit them? Samaritan’s Purse was asked to leave New York do that nursing homes could be forced to admit patients. No, Trump is not responsible for the Wuhan virus nor can he be held responsible for governors who deliberately inflict harm on their populations.

    @Anon,

About 35% of the deaths due to COVID in New York were of residents in nursing homes. Do you think the training of healthcare providers in nursing homes is adequate for containing this highly infectious disease?

EOS, you’re very right to be concerned. But Governors (and the President) did not order this. They will take action to stop the private owners and managers of these abilities from continuing to do this. The President can issue and order, as can the Governors. The ones with sense will.

In the places where it has been occurring, owners and managers of those private facilities are making that decision. The President and the Governors should have been able to count on nobody doing this. Now they will have to enact more oppressive government orders, which you are so opposed to.

I believe the people who have been involved in making these decisions to endanger non-COVID-19 patients by moving COVID-19-positive patients into the same wards, should be prosecuted for reckless endangerment.

The President can issue an order regarding this. So can any governor, or local government. The people who are putting COVID-19 patients in wards with non-COVID-19 patients should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. If any non-COVID-patient dies as a consequence of this conduct, they should be charged with murder.

The owners and managers who are doing these things are likely politically motivated. They’re doing it so they can then make the false claim that it’s their only option due to state orders.

Trump could order all COVID-19 patients be moved to temporary field hospitals. But he’s to anxious to close them. Why don’t you tell your moron President to mobilize COVID-19-only field hospitals, so all senior care facilities an operate normally?

State governors are mandating that nursing homes accept COVID patients. Recently Witmire modified the order to state that patients be placed in a separate unit, which can be a hall in the same building. She is also designating “hubs” to take COVID patients that will also have uninfected residents. Wake up – the quality of training in nursing homes is much less than hospital ICU’s where employees are getting infected.

You’re right though that the Governors are also dumb for not realizing this is happening. They’ll be as criminally culpable as the president if they also don’t do anything to prohibit this.

Aloha EOS you are falling out of the mold. Be careful, you might find yourself on the outside with the liberals. After all the MAGA crowd is openly referring to the Trump Virus as the Boomer Broom. They are embracing the senicide that is our new public policy. The sooner we get back to work the sooner we clear our society of the week. Strengthen the herd through purging the week and frail. Get with the program or get swept away by the broom.

Best thing that could happen for seniors and others at risk is to remove the lockdown and allow healthy individuals to experience a mild illness and then provide herd immunity, if that’s possible.

    Wobblie,

The vulnerable won’t die if they remain isolated. Since the young and healthy are not likely to need hospitalization, they can be set free. The few who do get extremely sick will get the needed help at hospitals that are not overrun, because the vulnerable are isolated and not getting infected. Letting healthy persons build community resistance is the best way to protect everyone and to minimize the loss of life. Ask your wife.

There has been an extremely small number of persons under the age of 45 that didn’t have any comorbidity that has died from COVID. Why should they be kept prisoners? They just need to avoid face to face contact with the vulnerable population.

BTW, I have multiple co-morbidities. I will stay in the bunker until I deem it is safe to go out, regardless of what any governor or president declares. However, I feel the rest of the community should no be deprived of their liberty.

  71. Posted May 13, 2020 at 11:30 am | Permalink

EOS, I hate to burst your bubble about young people but they are now finding that people under 45 are dying from this. Apparently they are getting strokes even after being otherwise asymptomatic. How prevalent this is remains to be seen because no one thought to test such patients for COVID-19 until somewhat recently.

Oh, and while the virus itself is not Trump’s fault, his dismal response to it is. ‘The governors are doing the best they can under bad circumstance but they are mostly doing a good job. You wouldn’t like anything a Democratic governor does just like you are ok with a Republican one poisoning black children.

I agree with EOS that COVID-19 positive patients should not be put in to the “regional hub” senior facilities.

“Originally, the state wanted the patients to go to the TCF Center, but that didn’t happen, and the facility was shut down.”

I wonder why it didn’t happen. And I wonder why the reporter didn’t detail why it didn’t happen.

Why did science board push [no need close China travel] narrative early on?
Why did [select] govs push COVID-19 positive elderly patients into nursing homes [most at risk_proven] when surplus of availability in hospitals [+ USNS_Comfort]?
Why are CDC numbers conflating COVID-19 deaths with influenza, pneumonia, other?
Why are influenza deaths at [all-time] historical low levels vs years past [outside of standard deviation]?
Why are COVID-19 tests returning positive results on pawpaw’s and animals?
Why are [select] swing states undergoing heavy quarantine extensions?
Why are possible [treatments][cures] being prevented and attacked [USA]?

Aloha EOS, he missed a couple of the elements of the “conspiracy “. He didn’t mention G-5, or Gates. What ever you do distract from the total failure of Trumps entire administration.

The revolving door of sycophant Secretaries has destroyed competency throughout the Government. We all saw a foretaste of this with his administrations response in Puerto Rico.

So have you seen the studies that are estimating a 10-13 shortening of life expectancy of Trump virus survivors. Folks will be cursing Trumps name for at least a couple generations.
