Last year on Memorial Day, my son and I discovered a giant vernal pool teaming with tadpoles at Riverside Park, so we thought we’d go back today in hopes of finding more. While we didn’t find any frogs or tadpoles, there was plenty for us to talk about. Among other things, we saw a family stranded on a dead tree in the middle of the river, about 100 rotting carp scattered across the park, and a half dozen or so kids climbing on a play structure that was still partially roped-off with caution tape. [The play structure had been roped-off in response to the fact that an easily transmittable infectious disease has already claimed the lives of 5,240 Michiganders. Apparently, however, the families of these kids didn’t see any reason to comply with the guidance of public health officials.] It was a surreal scene. Dozens of public safety officers coordinating a rescue, parents watching as their kids essentially play a kind of “pay it forward” version of Russian roulette, and the smell of bloated fish rotting in the heat wafting through the air. But it was nice to be out of the house, and away from the computer, where I’d been reading about Donald Trump’s well-deserved golfing vacation. [Presiding over an economy in collapse, and the death of nearly 100,000 constituents isn’t exactly easy, you know.]
If you’ll recall, Donald Trump often criticized Barack Obama for playing golf when he was in the White House. In fact, Trump promised on the campaign trial in 2016 not to do the same thing if elected. “Because I’m going to be working for you, I’m not going to have time to go play golf,” he said. Well, at this point in the Obama administration, Barack Obama had played 98 rounds of golf, and, according to CNN, over that same amount of time, “Donald Trump has now spent all or part of 248 days at a golf course.” The Biden campaign, to their credit, just released an add about Trump golfing while the COVID-19 death count fast approaches 100,000 in the United States. Trump responded by saying that it was worse when Obama did it, and that, when he does it, it’s for “exercise”. [Obama, I guess, golfed for other, more nefarious, reasons.]
Donald Trump, for what it’s worth, also criticized Joe Biden’s handling of the H1N1 swine flu outbreak during the Obama administration. Alluding to the approximately 12,000 Americans who died in 2014, he called the White Houses’s response to that outbreak a “total disaster,” apparently unaware that 12,000 is a much, much smaller number than 100,000.

So, yeah… Donald Trump, from a golf course, criticized Barack Obama’s golfing, when, in fact, Obama golfed significantly less. And he then attacked Biden’s response to H1N1, on the eve of our crossing the 100,000-dead mark, completely ignoring the fact that nearly ten times as many have already died from the pandemic he’s been presiding over… a disease, by the way, that he once said would “disappear” as if by a “miracle”. [He also seemed to accuse former Republican member of Congress Chuck Scarborough of murder, but we’ll have to leave that for another time.]
Three months ago, on February 26, Donald Trump said, “The 15 (cases in the United States), within a couple of days, is going to be down to close to zero.” And, as of today, we have 99,742 dead in the United States. And we still don’t have a comprehensive, federal plan as to how to address the spread. In fact, based on the photos I’ve seen this weekend, it looks as though we’ve collectively decided to just sacrifice our elderly and infirm, and get back to business as usual, no matter what the cost. And, yes, I hold the President responsible for this. It would be one thing if he just failed to offer leadership from he golf course, but he’s been actively fighting on behalf of the virus, by insisting that states be “liberated” and businesses be reopened against the advice of public health officials.
So, back to the park…. Thankfully, I didn’t witness any tense confrontations with the police over the use of the playground equipment, like we saw a little while ago in Idaho, where an anti-lockdown activist was arrested for removing caution tape and encouraging her kids to climb on playground equipment, but it was still disturbing to walk by and see the torn caution tape fluttering in the breeze as kids played, apparently with the consent of their nearby guardians. Given that there were several dozen officers in the park, tending to the family whose inner tubes had gotten hung-up beneath the Cross Street bridge, you would have thought that one of them might have said something, but I guess they weren’t looking to spend their Memorial Day as a viral video clip on social media. [The people stuck under the bridge were rescued by police officers in a motor boat that was brought in on a trailer. By the time they were gotten out of the river, my guess is that there were close to 20 fire trucks, ambulances and police cars on the scene. And, for what it’s worth, I’d say that fewer than 10% of those on the public safety officers on the scene were wearing masks.]
Well, it took about a week, but I think all of the carp that left the Huron River when Riverside Park flooded, are now dead. You can just see a few in the foreground of this last photo, but there were about a hundred others floating around the pond. [You can kind of make some of them out if you look hard at the above photo. You can see the sun reflecting off of their bloated, floating bodies.] Yesterday afternoon, there was just one dead fish. So all of these must have died in pretty quick succession. I was surprised to find this many dead today. Arlo and I watched a fly fisherman catch one yesterday, and my impression, after talking with him a bit, was that these lagoons had pretty much been fished out. We didn’t see any sign of fish jumping, and he’d told us that he and others had already pulled a lot out, returning them to the river. And I don’t know how successful they were, but these fisherman were preceded by an army of young people with nets, who were out on Saturday, trying their best to save as many as they could. [At one point, Arlo and I counted 8 people with nets in the same small pond.] I guess, though, these 100 or so had evaded capture… Again, I think there’s probably an analogy to be made here between the carp that left the river and the folks who encouraged their kids to all go down the same slide, but I’ll leave that to you.
One last thing… Alro and I, later in the day, enjoyed a double feature of The Music Man and Indestructible Man, talking about what a mash-up of the two (The Indestructible Music Man) might look like. Professor Harold “The Butcher” Hill, we reckoned, would have come to River City seek out the men that had sent him to the death house, sell them musical instruments, and then break their spines in half, all while singing and dancing. [If we could have stayed up later, I would have added either The Omega Man or The Man Who Came to Dinner.]

I don’t know if the parents of the kids on the playground really don’t care, or maybe they are just at their wit’s end as to how to socially isolate the naturally sociable. There is always play for children, even in the most dire of circumstances, ring around the rosie and all that. I’m sure your grandparents played as children prior to the polio vaccine, no?
I am trying very hard not to be too judgemental about those I see violating social distancing guidelines but it is really hard. I am failing. The thing is, while I am sympathetic to people going a little stir-crazy, especially on a hot day, they are still exposing people to a lot of risks. I mean, it just is not ok to allow one’s children to play on playgrounds right now. And is it ever a good idea to go tubing on the Huron River in the spring when heavy rains cause the river to be high and also cause Ann Arbor to release raw sewage into the river?
Oh well. I have resigned myself to isolating all summer. I have gone up to the lake but have been wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing and only staying outside. I was appalled at how many were simply not taking precautions. Lots of crowded boats and in one part of the lake, a bunch of younger people rafted their boats and were having a big party in the shallows.
I saw lots of posts on social media from people either violating rules themselves or some were taking photos of others violating the rules. There was a lot of rulebreaking, that is for sure! The silver lining I guess is if one gets some immunity after getting COVID, these folks are just getting us to that point faster. I still hope that the hot weather will slow things down.
Ken MacGregor, whose deceased wife the playground is named after, had this to say on Facebook: “The person that playground is named after would be telling the parents exactly how dangerous this is.”

My husband and I and our four year old saw the “grandparents” this weekend (his parent and mine) and while his Mom is religiously following social distancing guidelines, my parents and his Dad repeatedly got too close, were not wearing masks, did not put their masks on their faces, touched toys and then handed them to our son, sat like 3 feet away from us…

Lori Klausutis was a 28-year-old staffer for Scarborough in his Florida office when she was found dead in the office in 2001. The medical examiner said she fainted from a heart condition and hit her head. Scarborough was not in Florida at the time, had already announced his retirement months earlier, and retired later that year. The Washington Post’s Fact Checker called this claim “vicious” and said they wish they had a bigger Pinocchio scale on which to grade it.
At first, some people on the left, such as Michael Moore, actually used this to attack Scarborough, writes Florida journalist Craig Pittman. But in recent years, the allegation has found renewed life on the right. Most prominently through Trump.
Seemingly unprompted — there have been no developments in this case — Trump has been pushing this conspiracy theory over the past couple of days, including over the Memorial Day weekend and again Tuesday.
Klausutis’s widower never remarried and rarely speaks about his wife’s death. But he recently wrote a letter to Twitter’s chief executive asking him to take down Trump’s tweets. “I’m asking you to intervene in this instance because the President of the United States has taken something that does not belong him — the memory of my dead wife — and perverted it for perceived political gain,” Timothy J. Klausutis wrote. “My wife deserves better.”
The president’s tweets haven’t been taken down, and Trump continues the attacks.
“Trump’s tweets offer a reminder of the remarkable nature of the Trump era,” Pittman writes, “that a sitting president can traffic in incendiary and false allegations while the political world around him remains largely silent, accustomed to Trump’s modern-day definition of presidential behavior.”
On Tuesday, reporters asked White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany why the president keeps bringing this up. She deflected, choosing instead to list Scarborough’s many critiques of the president’s coronavirus response. “It’s Joe Scarborough that has to answer these questions,” she said.

I’m here. Waiting for someone to post something interesting. I did notice that Whitmer opened up Northern Michigan in time for the holiday weekend, but told people not to travel there unless you owned property there. What a surprise – I hear she’s up near Traverse City now. It’s only a lame joke because it didn’t get him to the front of the line.
I think if she had isolated SE Michigan, the rest of the state would have been fine. And if she hadn’t put COVID patients in nursing homes the death rate in our state would likely have been halved, or close to it. But I’m guessing because they aren’t releasing those numbers – why not? Most infected persons were either front line workers, those in close contact with front line workers, or those in nursing homes/group homes/prisons. If we do get a resurgence in the fall, can we quarantine front line workers after their work hours, deliver free food to them and pay their family members to stay home?

Aloha EOS, where would you put those who were living in long term care facilities who are being released from the hospital? Should they continue to be housed in hospitals or should they return back to their home? What does a compassionate conservative like yourself who supports the Trump policy of coexisting with the virus want us to do with those patents?
Perhaps those field hospitals Trump had dismantled could have been put to better use? What do you want to do with all those infected prisoners too? We are going to be living with the virus for the foreseeable future–what is your solution EOS?
Given current stats, 1720000 confirmed cases of the Trump virus, 100000 deaths and 360000 recovered leaves over 1259000 known infected individuals. The case fatality rate has fallen from around 8% to just under 6%. Hopefully we are getting better at treating the virus and the case fatality rate will continue to fall. If things remain as they are with no surge of new cases (yeah right) we will face at least another 100000 deaths over the next couple of months. So EOS if you have worthwhile suggestions lets here them.

Field hospitals were a great solution. Trump got them set up and the communities said they didn’t need them. Samaritan’s Purse was up and running and was told to leave Central Park so that patients could be sent to nursing homes. I read one source that said 60% of the deaths in Pennsylvania were in nursing homes.
There is no effective treatment for this virus. It keeps mutating and that makes the possibility of an effective vaccine unlikely.
Infected prisoners need to be isolated from the general population quickly, and treated in hospital wings. This means testing must be frequent. Frequent testing and isolation of the sick would occur in all group housing situations.
If I were in charge, I would set up COVID treatment centers and keep patients there until they are free of the virus. Medical staff and all others who need to work closely with likely infected individuals would be housed nearby in luxury apartments where all their needs would be provided and they should be extremely well paid for isolating themselves from the rest of the population.
Healthy persons would continue life as before, with a few changes. We would bring back manufacturing of essential supplies and pharmaceuticals to the US. As much as possible we would make everything in America so that we could buy all things American. And that’s just to start. MAGA

Since our official policy as a nation is to co-exist with the virus and work towards a magic bullet solution we will see no one implement sane solutions in this country.
The current change in direction from “flattening the curve” to ignore it and it will go away as promoted by The Leader will obviously work. If we stop paying attention to what happens in extended care facilities, student dormitories and factories and label all those deaths “flu” we’ll all FEEL so much better.
Do you get out of the bunker much? I believe that if you stay away from others, you can go out side safely. It is important to get sunlight. If you can’t go out be sure to take plenty of Vitamin D. Some scientist are investigating weather or not it is your Vit. D level that is determining how severe a case of the Trump flu you experience–possibly why older and darker skinned folks experience worse symptoms and have higher mortality. (Vitamin D may lock up molecular binding sites restricting and containing the growth of the virus at the cellular level.)
The difference between my plan and the Communist Chinese is that front line workers would be extremely well paid, not sacrificed for the good of the rest of the population. And if they spoke up about a need that wasn’t being addressed, they wouldn’t disappear and never be heard from again. And high risk persons who got infected wouldn’t be tossed into the incinerators alive.
More than 99% of healthy persons will survive a COVID infection, and many will not even know they are infected. Once they recover, they can keep our economy running and our communities thriving.
Locking down the entire country has been a mistake. We just needed to build more bunkers for the vulnerable. My bunker is on the edge of the sprawl, so I can come up to tend my crops without risk of close contact with neighbors. Rather than a Vit D deficiency, I have a good case of sunburn.

I only saw the Forbes article that reported 46% of all deaths are occurring amongst .6% of the population that is housed in nursing homes.
Could the huge discrepancy between states be partially explained by how states handled their most at risk nursing home populations? Michigan does not seem to be reporting the numbers while other states are…

The flights were before the lockdown FWIW. I practiced some extreme social distancing while on my drive home. I camped in isolated spots alone. I pretty much only stopped to get gas and I was very careful to wear a mask and plastic over my hands along with some very serious use of hand sanitizer (that I bought from the awesome Detroit Bus Co!). I did use some rest areas but only because they were very empty, i.e. no one in the restroom at the same time. I also went to the lake this weekend where I again practiced social distancing and wore a mask if I was talking to anyone. It isn’t a public lake so I can sit by the shore and swim without fear of encountering anyone other than my own family.
Heh, I just got into an argument on FB about this. Some people seem to think that it is not ok to take pictures of people in public in order to shame them for not following social distancing and mask guidelines. I didn’t do that but I think it is fine for people to do. No one has an expectation of privacy in public places. If only there were some way people could obscure their faces so that they are unrecognizable when people post pictures of them on social media without their permission? Some kind of cloth with straps they could put over their face or something?

As you can readily see 15% of Washtenaw county deaths are younger than 70 and I would presume not in an extended care facility–96 to date, 13 or so in their 50s and 60s. Another 26% in their 70’s, the rest 80 and above.

368,00 persons in Washtenaw County on lockdown for over 2 months. Economy in a death spiral, businesses closing, mental health suffering.
100 people have died of COVID in Washtenaw County. Almost 60% of deaths are attributed to patients that were at least 80 years old. Only 4% of deaths were in patients younger than 59. That leaves 36% of the deaths for the age group 59 – 79. About 15% of the county population is over 60. Add another 5% of persons with risk factors other than age.
Let the 80% live free while those at risk isolate.
Robert, the county health departments compile the data. They choose what is revealed to the public. They choose not to tell us which nursing homes are spreading the virus to their residents so that their families don’t storm the facilities to get them out. Public health does not look out for the individual. The individual has to look out for themselves. It’s entirely the local authorities that limit the dissemination of data.
Your best bet is to stay healthy enough to stay out of any group home. It is for the “public good” that persons are encouraged to put their loved ones into nursing facilities to obtain the best care.
‘Quarantine’ is when you restrict the movement of sick people.

Aloha, what EOS like most “compassionate” conservatives leave out is the hospitalization rate. Hospitalization duration. Length of recovery. Health consequences of those who recover from the Trump virus. Like most complex problems they are only able to view the problem through the narrow self-interested view of what is best for “me”. Like most things Conservatives do not understand the purpose of quarantines. The current plan for travel in the Bahamas calls for ALL visitors to be placed in a 14 day quarantine. That is the traditional methodology. China has been imposing a 14 day quarantine on all visitors returning nationals entering the country. By doing this China has successfully crushed the virus. They have been successful in defeating the virus, while we flop around debating body counts, and which demographic groups we are prepared to sacrifice for the economy.
I guess we will still be able to travel to Brazil. One banana republic to another.
Aloha, 40% of current hospitalizations in New York are under the age of 60. One of the many other factors are brilliant compassionate conservatives leave out of their get back to work equation is the length of time recovery takes. Many survivors are still struggling with recovery 4 and more months after being diagnosed.

Aloha FF, Which statistics from the article do you think are more reliable? The summary that you quote, or the actual breakdown that is also reported in the article, which I posted. In my line of work the specific always takes precedent over the general. A specific statement that says the dates the information was compiled and the number of hospitals surveyed seemed much more relevant than a reporters summary. But like all conservatives FF only looks for information that confirms his bias.
The statement “nearly 40% were retired” means that over 60% were still part of the working age population. Most folks highest income years, allowing them to retire is ,between 50 and 65. FF and EOS would deprive those people of those income years and condemn the old to poverty. No wonder, conservatives have been drooling over getting their hands on social security for decades–they see this as their opportunity to complete the looting of the commons.
My point was EOS was never claiming that only old people should be isolated. Vulnerable people with underlying conditions should be protected and isolated. People who are not vulnerable can be productive and thereby be active participants in the war against the virus. A sustainable war effort requires income and production. Non-Marxist types realize this and want to do their part to help out even if that means taking on minimal risks to keep themselves off of unemployment.

I have multiple reasons that put me at risk. If I were acting in my own self interest, I would advocate everyone be in quarantine so that they can’t infect me and kill me.
The medical world has limited options in treating a virus without a vaccine. It is difficult to make an effective vaccine for an RNA virus that mutates rapidly. If we all stay in the bunkers for two years, we will still have to come out and likely catch the virus. Thank God it is not Ebola that would kill most persons in a couple of days.
Almost all persons under age 60 will survive, but some will have lingering effects.
I am just happy that some research is showing that wearing masks reduces transmission very significantly. We obviously can’t stay locked down until there is a vaccine or the virus goes away but if masks are that effective, we may be able to open things up but with a mask requirement. That is positive.
