For what it’s worth, anti-fascists aren’t the problem

Today, Donald Trump announced that, “The United States of America will be designating ANTIFA as a terrorist organization.” This is problematic for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that there isn’t an actual anti-fascist organization in America by the name of ANTIFA that people belong to. It’s not like the KKK, or the Aryan Brotherhood, or the National Socialist Movement, or the Proud Boys, for instance — none of which, by the way, has the President suggested be labeled as terrorist organizations, even though they actually are. No, when Donald Trump says “ANTIFA” (short for “anti fascist”), he’s just using it as a broad, catch-all label that could conceivably be applied to anyone who take to the street against his administration, from protesters who find themselves blocking the advancement of police lines to journalists shooting video of things the police don’t want shown.

I have a lot more to say, but it’s going to have to wait until tomorrow. For now, though, I just wanted to make you aware of the fact that Donald Trump has come out and officially stated that the real problem in American isn’t our organized and increasingly active white nationalist hate groups, but those he perceives to be anti-fascists. [And, yes, calling his adversaries “anti-fascists” would, by definition, make him a fascist.] Oh, and speaking of racism is America, White House National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien, when asked today if racism is a problem in America, responded, “No, I don’t think there’s systemic racism.”

For what it’s worth, I don’t like that people are smashing windows and burning buildings. I certainly understand it, but I don’t like it. Like civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis, I’d prefer that people, “Organize. Demonstrate. Sit-in. Stand-up. Vote. Be constructive.” With that said, though, I’d rather see video of a dozen windows being broken than one of a cop flashing a white power hand sign during a riot.

One last thing. Having spent the past few days watching police violence erupt nationwide, it made me happy today to see Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson taking off his riot gear today, and marching alongside protesters in Flint. I found it a welcome relief after all the stories of police storming medical tents, and videos of people being assaulted by officers while standing on their own porches, and sitting in their own cars.

This is what real leadership looks like. Leadership isn’t hiding from the press in the basement of the White House while members of the administration tell reporters that you’ve already made “very eloquent remarks.” Leadership is engaging with people, having difficult conversations, and trying to find a path forward, not just tweeting out “LAW & ORDER!” from your basement. [I’m waiting for him to tweet out #WhitePropertyMatters.] And, with that said, I’ll leave you with this photo of Joe Biden, who was on the street in Wilmington, Delaware today, talking with protesters.

update: From The Washington Post White House Bureau Chief Philip Rucker: “Trump and some of his advisers calculated that he should not speak to the nation because he had nothing to say… He had no tangible policy or action to announce, nor did he feel an urgent motivation to try to bring people together. So he stayed silent.”

6 days in and it continues to get worse. Progressive mayors and governors sit on their hands and do nothing while businesses are looted and cleared of all merchandise. If nothing is done to stop them, the looters will turn next to private residences. Labeling Antifa as a terrorist group allows Trump to use Federal forces without waiting for local governments to ask for help. Communities that do nothing to stop the riots should not expect Federal aid to rebuild later. The protests will slow considerably as the protesters get sick from COVID.

The protesters are spreading the virus, and that means there will be more deaths of people who could have otherwise survived. It was true of the fools gathering at capital buildings weeks ago. And it’s true of the idiots mobbing the streets in dozens of cities now.

Some action can be taking locally. The A2 Police Union Contract is up for renewal in TONIGHT’s council meeting. Some wonks have scrutinized the contract to review where it insulates local police from accountability for abuse. Changing it will almost certainly result in a lawsuit. Structural change often requires legal review. Because that’s who structural racism perpetuates itself.

There’s a whole lot of language policing going with white liberals elbowing each other out for the title of most sensitive. Meanwhile we will likely once again ignore the possibility for structural change.

Sheriff Clayton appears to be doing a great job. Protests are scheduled during daylight hours, allowed to block traffic, hold signs, and use megaphones. The sheriff department protects the protestors by blocking traffic and blocking exits from highways that would route cars towards the protests.

Many people are seriously criticizing the actions of the sheriff in Flint (video linked above) because he says ‘let’s make this a parade’
Turning protest against the police into a parade waters down the intensity and the message.

Of police want to join protests they should drop their gear and do so and then like others who are complicit in violence against communities of color, they should STFU and follow the lead of those with most at stake.

Defining what the protest is is not the job of that Sheriff.
I know his intentions were good and of course everyone felt relief and the lessening of tension. But tension is what creates the impetus for change.

Now one more time the police union contract is up for renewal in A2 at tonight’s city council meeting. You do not have to live in A2 yo weigh in. If you ever travel in the jurisdiction of A2 police you have a right to weigh in.

Aloha JH, it is not “tension” that provides the impetus for change. Fear is the motivator. First they will intimidate and brutalize the weakest. Then they will attempt to bribe and suborn those whom they think are leaders. We’ve seen the play book many times. But if people say “we are all leaders”, like BLM’s and ANTIFA, and keep showing up, their tactics will fail. Nixon was the worst president up to Bush and now Trump. But because he was afraid of us, we got the EPA, OSHA, the end of the Vietnam War. Victories that we still rely upon to defend ourselves. It is not tension that motivates a psychopath like Trump, it is fear. He felt some on Friday and again Sunday. We see he is shitting his pants. ” Got to Dominate the protesters, we got lots of troops to throw at them. ” You Governors who arn’t calling in the military are weak.” He lacks staying power.
JH as long as folks like you support the increase in “tension” and your liberal leaders don’t throw the people under the bus, Biden could be President in January.

    Anonymous,

Everyone who reads this site knows MM stands for MealyMouthed.

MM proposed: 1) Antifa *is* an anti fascist force; 2) someone aligning oneself against Antifa is aligning oneself with fascism; 3) It is “clearly understandable” that people would break windows and burn buildings; 4) and he also said he would prefer people not commit violent crimes.

If you want to use 4) to show that I was wrong that MM actually pushed back Antifa MORE THAN ZERO, then I will concede your point. I don’t think it is a great victory for you though. What do you do with the other propositions 1,2, and 3? How do all of the propositions 1-4 fit together with INTEGRITY as a whole? Does the implied support for Antifa in propositions 1,2,3 outweigh the little push back in 4? Would that outweighing make the pushback against Antifa less than zero?

Note: I am trying to understand why someone would state propositions 1,2,3 and then not take steps to join that group or support that group in concrete and direct ways. I want to know how someone can say they “clearly understand” the breaking of windows and burning of buildings AND to in the next breath say but I don’t do that and I don’t want them to do that? It’s a genuine and non-rhetorical question: Why not join Antifa? Why not go all in on a movement if you find it important, necessary and “understandable” in the fight against something you consider an evil?

Ironically, Anonymous is highlighting an example of MM’s mealy mouthed writing when he is trying to offer a defense against the accusation that MM writes with a mealy mouth. I am asking the question to provoke Mark to give a straightforward statement about Antifa. He can’t though because as HW pointed out proposition 1 and 2 are so dreadfully dumb. Maybe a re-thinking is in order? Rephrasing?

Maybe the best thing to ask is: How is it that MM “clearly understands” the breaking of windows and burning windows? How is that question formulated Anonymous?

Lynne— the police union contract was tabled until fall so there’s plants of time for input. The core issue very quickly: The contract stipulates that any complaints about police abuse of power will be resolved by arbitration. A Community Police Review Commission was formed a few years ago. Because if this stipulation in the union contract they have little actual power. Today CM’s we’re suggesting They propose training etc. while training is great it doesn’t help much when abuse occurs. A change in that part of the contract will likely be challenged in court by the union. I believe it’s worth the trouble.

My daughters friend was tear gassed and arrested in NY with a bunch of other people and thrown into a paddy wagon. She was held in tight quarters with many others for 6 hours without water or a phone call. When they demanded water, they ere threatened. Eventually some non-police jail workers got them water. Then they were released without charges.

They had been doing nothing remotely violent. The placed themselves as white kids between the cops and protestors. The cops were trying to break up the protests. That’s not their job.

She is in contact with the NLG. I believe there will be many lawsuits. I don’t think they will produce justice. I worked for the NLG in Detroit in the late 80’s/early 90’s. There were constant lawsuits for police brutality. Coleman Young has a policy of taking every case to appeal. The city would lose. I Nothing changed. I watched mostly white civil rights lawyers (good people!) become wealthy off of the broke city of Detroit. This was in a Black controlled city with a Black controlled police force. Imagine the structural barriers to change in a place with a white police force and leadership.

Change will only happen when we do not allow racism and racist violence to be normalized.

The only path to that, given the intense resiliency and self-perpetuation of structural and cultural racism, begins with mass protest.

We wonks can’t make any inroads with A2 politicians on changing the police union contract without outside pressure. They need to feel political pressure (And power) stronger than the police union to take that on. Then the city will face lawsuit knowing the citizenry support it.

The union contract renewal was postponed to this fall btw. Faux liberal city council reps are pushing citizens who contact them re police abuses to suggest police training strategies. They are trying to redirect people away from the contract. Most A2 ppl will accept the easy and ineffective path that looks like change but isn’t.

    Don’t fall for it.

    Enough is enough.

    Thank you protesters.

There is no antifa to join, FF. There’s no organization. People can choose to identify themselves as anti-fascists or not. I know you have been sucking up that right wing media poison and that you look uncritically at the President’s talking points even though he lies literally daily, but the people being arrested and assaulted by police are not Antifa. They are regular citizens out protesting peacefully. Their violations are things like being out after curfew. Most of the time their violations are not illegal at all. They are simply where the police don’t want them to be. Our police force believe they make up the laws. They control the citizenry. That’s not their job; that’s a military occupation.

The protestors are not Antifa. Since no one is really clear on what that means, many if asked will for sure say they are anti-fascist. So would I if asked. I believe Trump is proto-fascist and have said so from the get go. Anytime a word is ill-defined it can be manipulated by political forces.

We don’t accept your definition of the term Antifa and so it follows that we can’t agree to anything you have to say about them. Get over it. Just find something else to talk about. Or get out in the damn garden. I beckons you. We do not.

  93. ‘Antifa’
    Posted June 2, 2020 at 12:25 pm | Permalink

PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM “ANTIFA” IN RESPONSE TO THE THREATS ISSUED BY UNITED STATES PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

    Dear Mr. Trump:

    Let us be perfectly clear:

“Antifa” isn’t an organization. There’s no membership, no meetings, no dues, no rules, no leaders, no structure. It is, literally, an idea and nothing more. Even the claim of this author to represent “Antifa” is one made unilaterally for the purposes of this communication and nothing more; there is no governing body nor trademark owner to dispute the author’s right to represent “AntiFa.”

“Antifa” is a neologism constructed from a contraction of the phrase “anti-fascist.” The truth is, there’s no such thing as being “anti-Fascist.” Either you are a decent human being with a conscience, or you are a fascist.

The ostensible president of the United States has, today, openly declared that he is a fascist, and that he intends to turn the military power of the United States into a fascist tool.

Now there is no question, and we can stop pretending that this man represents anything but the worst in humanity, which his supporters embody.

And that is the only effect his words will have.

It will likely be no problem for LEO to identify the author of this document, who also has maintained the “AntiFa” page on Facebook since founding it in 2017.

The author of this document is unconcerned with that inevitability because neither that author, nor this document, has been involved in a crime of any sort in any way.

But, since both the “president” and the media insist on acting as though “AntiFa” is this big, scary organization, the author supposes it’s time for “AntiFa” to make a statement.

    Thus:

“AntiFa supports and defends the right of all people to live free from oppressive abuse of power, whether that power is unjustly derived from wealth, status as an employer, or political popularity.

Particularly, AntiFa defends and supports the right of oppressed and marginalized people to protest, march, and engage in civil disobedience in pursuit of justice. While it is never our intent to engage in violent or destructive behavior, we cannot and will not take responsibility for telling people how they are allowed to be righteously outraged. We prefer and encourage non-violent action. We also understand that some people just aren’t feeling that nice anymore. Their feelings are entirely justified, and it is neither our role nor our privilege to tell them otherwise.

Mass civil disobedience is what happens when people say they’re hurting and whoever’s hurting them refuses to stop.

Stop hurting them. Fix your broken systems. Get real and meaningful psychological evaluations and background checks – police in some nations have to pass a more stringent test to carry pepper spray than any police department in the US, or the US military, have in place. As a direct and possibly deliberate consequence, our military and paramilitary personnel simply cannot be assumed to be fighting in the interests of the people of this country.

We’ve all seen the photos. This destruction and burning and looting is largely the behavior of outsiders; white people taking advantage of the situation both to enrich themselves by looting under cover of the protests, and to provide excuses for uncontrolled fascist elements within our military and police forces as plausible cover for killing more black, brown, and poor people without fear of sanction. The so-called “accellerationists” who have committed to ensuring that, any time a marginalized community stands up and demands justice, construct a narrative of criminality and destruction that white bigots and affluent oligarchs who benefit from our broken system to validate their bigotry and injustice retroactively. They are successful in this for two reasons: because people like you are easily manipulated in your banal, self-serving ignorance, and because people like you are more than happy to passive-aggressively reap the benefits of pretending to believe this destruction is the act of the oppressed.

This game has gone on for decades on an endless loop since the very dawn of the civil rights era, and we the people are saying ‘no more.’”

And that, “President” Trump, is your solution. No more. Get the dirt out of your law enforcement and your military. Get the dirt out of your government and administration. Ideally, resign now and take your VP and cabinet with you; Nancy Pelosi isn’t a great deal of improvement, but she’ll only be president for a few months.

You can’t arrest 100 million of us, sir, and you would be well-advised not to try. If you think that targeting and “making an example of” the author of this document will get you anywhere, you may rest assured that this author is more than prepared to allow his real name to be used as a rallying cry for justice and civil disobedience from coast to coast.

It is time for you and everyone who thinks like you to understand that whether black, red, brown, white, or any other color, Americans are done living in a nation of empty platitudes and broken promises.

Traditionally, this type of document is accompanied by a list of “demands.” Here are our demands:

-Universal single payer health care, without regard for citizenship status.

-Universal basic income WITH a federal job guarantee, under which the federal government becomes the “employer of last resort.” Involuntary unemployment is a function of profiteering by fascist capitalist oligarchs who are willing to sacrifice the lives of others for their own enrichment. It must end.

-The abolition of “right to work laws” which do exactly the opposite of ensuring anyone’s right to work.

    -Publicly funded higher education.

-Robust and effective social welfare programs to include child care, education, employment training and counseling, parenting skills training, and life skills training including fiscal education.

-A requirement that functional proficiency in media, political, and economic literacy be demonstrated to graduate high school.

-The creation of a publicly funded non-partisan media source to serve as the primary source of government information, to be overseen and managed day to day by a coalition of well-known communicators, political scientists, and other experts in propaganda to strip ALL bias from official information before it is broadcast.

-Federal charges of treason filed against anyone willfully and knowingly attempting to minimize public perception of the impact and risks of the coronavirus.

-Reform of whistleblower laws to ensure they have teeth, and particularly to ensure that a whistleblower, acting in good faith, is not identified to the public, ever.

In the end, Mr. “President,” the simple reality is that “AntiFa” isn’t a thing. You can’t end it, you can’t arrest it, and you can’t silence it. Nor, in any decent nation, would the attempt even be made.

“Antifa” means “Anti-Fascism.” The only position that opposes that is fascism. In the end, there is no “organization” that you can “declare terrorists.”

You, sir, and yours, are the terrorists, and your victims are done putting up with it.

America is not, in spite of having an openly admitted fascist as “president,” a fascist nation. We’ve had wars about this. The fascists are 0-2.

Please, Mr. “President” – let’s not try to make it 0-3? Because it will never, ever be 1-2, and none of us wants to see the death toll from your attempt to make it so.

Currently, media and other actors wishing to contact this author may do so through the page. Should Mr. Zuckerberg, who has displayed plenty of authoritarian and fascist tendencies himself, decide not to host that page any longer, this document will be updated.

    Best Regards,

    “AntiFa”

Can’t back it up don’t make the claim. I would feel like a dick if I lived that way. Good thing I use evidence to construct my arguments. Usually I don’t even need to add more than the evidence itself. The evidence blows your feelings away.

“Antifa, short for anti-fascists, hasn’t killed anyone and appears to have been only a marginal presence in Black Lives Matter protests. None of those arrested on serious federal charges related to the unrest have been linked to antifa.”
