Donald Trump, never one to pass up an opportunity to demonstrate his depth of his smallness, chooses to mark his historic impeachment by coming to Michigan and speculating as to whether or not John Dingell may be burning in hell

It took impeachment, but Donald Trump has finally won his first popular vote!

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach the President of the United States this evening, making Donald J. Trump not just the third person in the entire history of our great nation to earn such a devastating rebuke, but the fastest by far to reach the ignoble distinction. In pure Trump fashion, the President chose to mark the occasion not by apologizing for his well-documented affronts to the Constitution, but by lashing out wildly at those who, unlike him, have chosen to put country before personal self-interest, and actually honor their sworn constitutional obligation. And, unfortunately, he decided to do this here, in my beloved home state of Michigan. Here, to give you a sense of just how low he went during his Battle Creek rally this evening, is a post from Jordan Fabian of Bloomberg Business.

For what it’s worth, Donald Trump, who, by the way, was chosen for office by God himself, wasn’t clear as to why Dingell, a World War II vet and the longest serving Representative to serve in the House in U.S. history, may be burning in hell. One wonders if it was because of his work on the Civil Rights Act of 1964, his tireless work to expand heath care to the American people, or the historic legislation he drafted to ensure that we have clean water to drink and clean air to breathe.

Given that Trump won Michigan in 2016 by just 10,704 votes, I’d have thought that he might take a slightly different approach, and maybe not attempt to shit on the legacy of one of Michigan’s most beloved leaders of all time, but what do I know. Maybe, as Dingell has been dead for almost a year now, people are ready for the President to start theorizing about how he might be burning in hell, and publicly beating up on his grieving window for not giving him anything of value – like a vote against impeachment – in return for doing his job and agreeing to lower the White House flag in recognition of the Congressman’s passing. [Ironically, at the same time this was transpiring, Republican members of Congress were on television declaring that Donald Trump would never look for any kind of personal return on something he’d done as President.] It has, after all, been a few years since Dingell last won a race. When he did, though, he earned almost 70% of the vote… Enough about Trump, though. How about, instead of talking about how he responded to news of his impeachment, we focus on the inspiring and patriotic words delivered today by the likes of Adam Schiff, John Lewis, Maxine Waters and Steny Hoyer? That, I think, might be better for our collective mental health.

    Debbie Dingell has responded:

Mr. President, let’s set politics aside. My husband earned all his accolades after a lifetime of service. I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder.

Trump is among other things like a live improv performer. He is good at it. It was inaudible but it sounded like he was responding to someone in the crowd. The first rule of improv is to say “yes” first. After you say “yes” can say “yes, but”…. It is a rule for incorporating all of the random things that spontaneously arise.

Trump said: “Let’s assume he is looking down.”

I think it is more complicated, Lynne. I don’t think Trump’s story was that great but I think he was trying to say something like: “I did not like Dingell but when he died I did the right thing; Debbie does not like me but she is willing to go along with a fraudulent attempt to delegitimization my presidency and she is willing to act holier than thou while doing it.”

It is the sanctimonious moment that Republican’s find so over the top repulsive. The carving out of a higher ground for themselves is hilarious and disturbing to many…These are just my opinions and interpretations.

Republicans only have issues with holier-than-thou attitudes when they perceive those they see as undeserving as adopting it. Often though, what they see as holier-than-thou is really just someone saying that they are equal. They are fine when other republicans adopt such an attitude in case you haven’t noticed. J Bro,

Maybe Laura still reads this blog and give you some insights into “unintended consequences” as they might apply to high efficiency appliances and water savers? Mark was having problems with his HE washer a few years ago. I think some of the consequences are intended and some are unintended. The key is to avoid being a sucker, imo.

Please do start that washing machine company! EVERYTHING out there SUCKS right now. We are cajoled and pushed into being environmentally friendly–whether we want to or not–but in the end, how much more are these terrible appliances costing the environment? The resources to manufacture them, consumers wasting water and electricity to do the same damn load 3 times TO GET THEM SOMEWHAT CLEAN, then disposal in 6 years. It’s unconscionable that this is being allowed. Folks need to contribute to their retirement plans, pay for kids to go to college, take care of aging parents–NOT BUY A NEW DAMN APPLIANCE EVERY TIME THEY TURN AROUND. Washer, dryer, refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher. It never ends. I bet some bean counter in Washington’s done the math and this is the only thing keeping our economy afloat. It appears I’m having a rant of my own. Beating the damn clothes with a rock at the creek is sounding pretty good…

When you and Mark are in the foxhole together you can debate the “elite” question regarding particular appliances and you can also explain to him why his HE appliance is not crappy but “awesome”. You guys are going to have so much fun in your foxhole together. I don’t think you guys are going to annoy each other at all. Composting toilets will not be needed in your foxhole but my personal opinion is that “nature’s head composting toilet” will be the best option for the rest of civilized society. Seriously, the amount of water that is wasted is gross…

I know I shouldn’t respond to taunting. I can’t help myself, though. I feel as though I need to defend the claim of elitism. Which is ridiculous, I know. But, nonetheless, I feel like I need to explain to you all why I have a front load washer, like I’m some kind of ivy league professor or something… First off, it only cost a few hundred dollars more than a traditional washing machine, and simple math demonstrated to me that I’d more than make up the difference over a few years thanks to the energy and water savings. Second, I felt as though it was the right thing to do environmentally. And, third, and most importantly, a traditional washing machine wouldn’t work in the space. You see, our old washing machine died at at a point when we were dealing with a great many poop-filled diapers diapers, and, as it was in the basement, and somewhat of a pain in the ass to get to, we weren’t attending to laundry as much as we should have been, resulting in some pretty disgusting situations. At any rate, when the washer died, we decided that we’d take the opportunity to move our laundry upstairs, where we could keep more on top of it. And we decided to put the new washer and drier into a closet. And the only way it would work was to stack them. So that’s the whole story. I’m not sure if it makes me an elitist or someone who only had room upstairs for a stackable washer and drier. Regardless, I still maintain that the damn thing shouldn’t have stopped working after 7 years. Elitist or not, that’s not right.

FF lied about Trump’s comments. I even googled that quote he shared. It shows up in only one place. His comment here.

    What Trump really said:
“John would be so thrilled,” Trump quoted Dingell’s widow as saying. “He’s looking down.”
Trump quipped to his audience in Battle Creek: “Maybe he’s looking up. I don’t know.”

Pretending a quote from Debbie Dingell was Trump’s statement shows what a lying, lying, liar, liar pants on fire FF is. We have heard call Schiff’s parodic summation of Trump’s words criminal. I don’t know how FF lives with the cognitive dissonance. Trump’s and FF’s duplicity and smugness are enough to repulse and ‘disgust’ even members of Trump’s loyal base.

    Jean,

I want to like your Lou Whitaker joke. It would be funny and clever if it wasn’t misapplied. You are a very confused person, Jean.

I was trying to say, that it seemed to me, Trump was repeating the line “maybe he is looking up” after he heard somebody yell something in the crowd. Trump delivered the line “maybe he is looking up” while pointing and staring at somebody in the crowd. It was as if Trump was responding to whatever was yelled by an audience member….Trump immediately switched back to “let’s assume he was looking down” which we have established after clearing up your confusion on that different point. Does that make sense?

It is so weird that you fail to understand such basic things after investing so much time reading about, thinking about, and writing about a 15 second section of Trump’s speech. It is hilarious to me that you think you can take the pulse of “the internet’s” feelings about 15 seconds of a speech while you simultaneously demonstrate your failure to understand what is happening during the actual 15 seconds of the same speech. The fact that you are also bringing up the Dunning Krueger effect, while doing your Mr Bean act is just over the top insanely hilarious.

    Good God.

Many news sources described boos and groans when Trump insulted the late congressman.

Dingell told Trump to go to hell defending McCain. That might be enough right there to put him in The Bad Place for eternity.

“The News” says lots of stuff.

We have awesome access to primary sources now. Why people still rely slavishly on other people for interpretations is beyond me. Think for yourself!

HW knows who is naughty and who is nice, who is going to hell and heaven.

FF “think for yourself” In other words ignore any facts contrary to your world view. I think everyone here on all sides does a pretty good job of that already.

“Think for yourself” is more like not giving control to the people who are lying inorder to gain control of you. Many people are brainwashed here. Jean is one of them. Jean can’t even just watch a 15 seconds of a video and know who said what. She consults what other people are saying about that 15 seconds—like a slave.

FF– I was in a public place without headphones and so could not listen to the video in question. I did search your transcription. I have listened to it since and still don’t understand how Trump’s backtrack makes it all somehow ok. And yes many people agree with me. Given your own assessment of Trump as playing to his audience, I think it quite obviously matters what others think. He fell on his face and I think you have spent enough of everyone’s time trying to explain that away.

So, Jean felt comfortable calling me a duplitous-smug-liar based upon my summary of 15 seconds
of a speech that she had not yet listened to? That seems irresponsible to me.

Turn around is fair play FF. I used your exact words against you. And, for the record, your accusations were just about as plausible as my admittedly flawed ones. It’s called parody. Look it up.

I don’t think Jean has done what she thinks she has done. I also don’t think I have done what she thinks I have done.

I get the sense Jean thinks of my arguments as arguments put forth in some sort of trickster way. My only trick for destroying her arguments every time is trying to be honest about facts all the to time. Truth is a powerful force.

I have thought before you were trying to offer a parody of me. The problem is you are actually offering a parody of your own misrepresentation of me. You have done the same thing to others. It makes you look very clownish. In order to pull off a parody you need to have a firm understanding of thing you are mocking. You have very little understanding, Jean.

I have never read anything by Q. The Horowitz report was a peak into the future. Many people are clueless.

Last night I watched the movie “Thr Report” about the Senate Intelligence inquiry into Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (aka torture) utilized by the CIA during the Bush administration. I noted that mention was made of a DOJ investigation run by “Durham” that decided not to prosecute CIA officials involved in EIT and, more critically, to not release the Senate Report. (It was later read into the record at the Senate Intelligence Committee). Same guy.

“The Department of Justice had launched two investigations overseen by John Durham in 2009 that also did not result in charges.[80] The rationale for the absence of charges has not been disclosed, but Mr. Durham did say that the full record of the possible evidence of criminal conduct and possible defenses that might be offered by any of those accused were contained in the pages of the Senate committee report that he was not going to release. Thus, it remains impossible for anyone to offer an independent evaluation of whether anyone involved was or was not guilty of criminal conduct.”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senate_Intelligence_Committee_report_on_CIA_torture

So Mr Durham has worked as a shill for political purposes in the past– this time at the behest of the Bush and Obama administrations and the CIA.

Notably, a recent NYT bio of Durham did not mention his work on that investigation at all.

It should be noted that his failure to prosecute protected not just CIA members following orders (and not all did; some quit) but also the private contractors who developed the technique based on psychological conjecture rather than evidence. And so the CIA continued to assert that torture worked to extract critical intel until the Senate Report was read.

I can see why Barr chose him to lead this new investigation. Durham btw has already asserted publicly that he differs with Horowitz’ conclusions– which was a major breach of protocol and also pleased Barr to no end.

Horowitz does not agree with Horowitz’s conclusions.

Most media latched onto specific conclusions that were worded favorably for the “no bias” narrative. When questioned about his findings Horowitz painted a very different picture than media interpretations.

FF– I said Durham disagreed with Horowitz’ conclusions, not the media coverage of them… At least Horowitz is not a political shill like Durham has been in the past.

PS– Impeachment evidence is still rolling in too : https://twitter.com/thedailybeast/status/1208396725498630144?s=20
