I was going to write a substantive post about Iran tonight, but I decided to read an old Vonnegut book instead. Here, because I feel as though I owe you something — even though I know that I don’t — is a photo that I recently posted to Instagram. It’s something that Arlo said to me in the kitchen a few days ago.

Well, son, in the early days, if you can believe it, there was no Mario. The man’s name was Mr. Video. And the damsel that he was trying to save was just called Lady, and not Pauline.
You should have SEEN how FAST the barrels rolled in the olden days, Son. It was truly something to behold.
I picture Mark standing silent for a moment looking out the kitchen window contemplatively, then gesturing to Arlo suggesting he follow along out onto the porch. Mark slowly and carefully takes a seat in the rocking chair while Arlo seats himself almost instantly in the one beside him. Mark then takes a moment to fill his corncob pipe and light it while Arlo waits patiently, understanding the gravity of the moment. They both sit looking out over the yard and beyond toward the horizon, and the world almost seems to go quiet in anticipation of the great saga about to be passed down from one generation to the next.
A Nintendo Switch is just what the doctor ordered for you.
My son, when he was around Arlo’s age asked me a lot of ‘olden times’ questions. Once, he fixed some computer thing for me and said to me, “It’s ok, Mom. You’re good at other things than computers.” I asked him what that might be. He replied, “Hunting and gathering.”
I made my kids play p0ng once. But the best answer to Arlo’s question is to take him to the pinball museum on one of it’s few open days. http://vfwpinball.com/?p=446#more-446
Oh damn! I’ve been dreading the day I’ll have to have the Donkey Kong talk with my kids. I’ll probably just say, “Go ask your mother.” I’m just not comfortable talking about those kinds of topics with children.
Anyway, I hope your response is better than the one you gave a little while back when Arlo asked “Dad, what is Grease?” Your response…www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBVB3vHjKhs
Mark:
“I solve my problems and I see the light
We got a lovin’ thing, we gotta feed it right
There ain’t no danger we can go too far
We start believing now that we can be what we are
Grease is the word
They think our love is just a growing pain
Why don’t they understand, it’s just a crying shame
Their lips are lying only real is real
We stop the fight right now, we got to be what we feel
Grease is the word, is the word, is the word that you heard
It’s got a groove, it’s got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionalitly belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believing now but we can be who we are
Grease is the word, is the word, is the word that you heard
It’s got a groove, it’s got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
This is the life of illusion
Wrapped up in trouble
Laced with confusion
What are we doing here?
We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance, we can make it so far
We start believing now that we can be who we are
Grease is the word, is the word, is the word that you heard
It’s got a groove, it’s got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It’s got a groove, it’s got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Now grease is the way we are feeling
Grease is the word, is the word
Is the word, is the word, is the word
Is the word, is the word, is the word”
