Detroit’s Jimmy Aldaoud, deported from Detroit to Iraq, dies without access to insulin

This is Jimmy Aldaoud. He was born 41 years ago in a Greek refugee camp to Christian parents that had fled religious prosecution in Iraq. As six months old, Aldauod and his family made their way to United States, where they have lived ever since. This past June, ICE deported Aldaoud to Iraq. They did this knowing that he had never been to Iraq, and didn’t even speak the language. And, today, it’s being reported by Aldaoud’s family that he has died, likely because he couldn’t access the insulin he needed to treat his diabetes.

Upon learning of Aldauod’s death, Democratic Congressman Andy Levin had the following to say. “It was clear that deporting Jimmy to a country where he had never been, had no identification, had no family, had no knowledge of geography or customs, did not speak the language and ultimately, had no access to medical care, would put his life in extreme danger,” he said.

Here, if you’ve yet to see it, is video of Aldauod in Baghdad two weeks after his deportation from the United States, talking about his inability to communicate, access the medicine he needed to survive, etc.

There are some, I’m sure, who will say that Michigan is better off without Jimmy Aldaoud, a homeless man who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and had a history of non-violent property theft. And I’m sure that some of these people would even like to think of themselves Christians. And I’m confident that, if pressed, they could probably even find some obscure piece of scripture justifying the turning away of the sick and the poor. They’ll find a way to address the cognitive dissonance, the same way they do when they cast their votes for Donald “grab ’em by the pussy” Trump, and join in the chants of “send them back.” God forbid they look in the mirror and see this for what it actually is, though…

We, as a society, put more thought into releasing captive animals into the wild than we do expatriating people of color, and it’s absolutely unconscionable… We sent a sick man to his death, and that should weigh on all of us. [Let’s remember, the Republicans are now claiming to care about mental illness, right?] This was done in our name. We are all complicit.

One last thing… Even if Jimmy Aldaoud had been healthy, spoken the language, etc., there is no guarantee that he would have successfully transitioned to life in Iraq, given his religion… The following comes by way of Politico.

…The Trump administration has sought to deport more than 1,000 Iraqis with final orders of removal, including Chaldean Catholics in the Detroit metro area, of which Aldaoud was one. Chaldeans are an eastern branch of the Roman Catholic church who trace their roots to ancient Mesopotamia in present-day Iraq, where they are at high risk of being tortured or killed by the the terror group ISIS, the American Civil Liberties Union argued in a related legal case.

“Jimmy Aldaoud… should have never been sent to Iraq,” Rep. Andy Levin (D-Mich.) said in a written statement. “My Republican colleagues and I have repeatedly called on the executive branch to cease deportation of such vulnerable people. Now, someone has died.”

Advocates point out that many Chaldeans targeted for deportation have spent years or decades in the U.S.

Miriam Aukerman, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, which represents the immigrants in a class-action lawsuit, warned that continued deportations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement could put more people at risk…

    TLG,
Dude, they’re fucking nuts. They think that when they die they’re gonna join you in a cloud based environment where they’ll be reunited with their dead relatives and childhood pets in a perpetual blissful consciousness. So don’t expect their explanation to make any sense! Oh, and by the way, you aren’t real ..and neither am I.

Why didn’t he go to the Greek embassy? Why don’t you take note that countless Americans are being victimized by illegal immigrants but sensationalize personal tragedies such as this?

When will ICE finally have the green light to shoot people in the head when found? Think of all the money we would save and the lives that would be saved. Trump needs to speed this up.

Immigrants kill so many people every year, and we have to spend so much money to house and feed them. ICE should just execute them wherever they are found.

ICE should also start arresting collaborators. Anyone who is ever found helping an immigrant in any way should be jailed for life.

Aloha HW, “Why didn’t he go to the Greek embassy?” I know you can read but what part of “deporting Jimmy to a country where he had never been, had no identification, had no family, had no knowledge of geography or customs, did not speak the language and ultimately, had no access to medical care”. Given your “logic” why didn’t Trump deport him to Greece? I think EOS might be right and half the country suffers from mental illness.
Being a dolt it just seems to me that, “did not speak the language” says a lot. I wonder how you would do dropped into Mexico city or better yet or or Sao Paulo with no money, no family and no ability to communicate, and oh yeah lets induce diabetes in you as well. The mental illness part you already have covered.

Aloha, as you all know I am a dolt, and didn’t really read the article as well as I should have. Jimmy, other than being born in a Greek refuge camp, was an Iraqi. Unlike the US, Greece does not confer citizenship on children of foreign nationals who gave birth to them in Greece. You must be a legal resident of Greece for 5 years before your children born after that 5 years would be considered Greek. Your children born during the 5 years can apply for citizenship.
So HW that could be the answer for why he didn’t go to the Greek embassy. I suppose if he had been a Greek citizen we would have deported him to Athens. As a Greek citizen he would have dual citizenship in the EU and could have gone to any country in the EU with good mental health care.

FF, you may be right. Men like you DO react to women or people of color gaining any kind of equality in bad ways. In this case either by voting for Trump or by not voting for the only other candidate to have been in a position to beat him. I get it, it was worth it to you to throw women, POC, and immigrants under the bus because some women started acting like they were equal. You certainly have demonstrated here often enough that you don’t like uppity women or POC. It has even gone so far as blaming them for your own shitty reactions to any loss of privilege. The blood is on your hands FF.

Actually no, you don’t “get it”. I love Equality, Justice and Truth; and nothing is better than seeing those ideals manifested into the world. I do not reject Lynne and Hillary’s ideas because they are strong women, I rejected the two of you because you are two PEOPLE whose ideas are laced with stupidity, bigotry, and a strong sense of privilege OVER others.

Didn’t Lynne say Hillary receiving debate questions ahead of time was not a big deal because there was only a limited number of topics they might ask about anyway?

HW, I mean this with all due respect. You need to get help. JFK Jr. is dead. He is not running the country behind the scenes with Donald Trump. He is not coming back to bring Obama to justice, free Hillary’s child sex slaves, or whatever else you’ve been told on the dark web. You have an illness, and you need to be treated for it. I am not making fun of you. I do no think this is a laughing matter. I am genuinely concerned.

    DD,

You can’t say anything definitively about the “Lutheran Church”. Was it ELCA, Wisconsin, Missouri, Evangelical or another Lutheran synod?

I don’t think half of the country is mentally ill. Never said that. You are misrepresenting my words. More than half of Americans have taken an anti-depressant at some point in their lives but not due to any physiological illness. There is absolutely no way to determine neurotransmitter concentrations in an individual, but many are conveniently labeled as having an imbalance.

There is a 25 year old Muslim woman who is seeking to finish her EMU degree she’s been secretly working toward through online classes. She is seeking a place to live. Obviously she needs to be kept safe from her family who will strongly oppose the idea of her getting a degree.

Jean Henry, I was wondering if you may know of someone who could rent a room to this young woman.

Here a post on Couchsurfing from Barbara Schulte, who is trying to get help for this young woman:

“Hi! I am actually reaching out to my couchsurfing family for a friend of mine. It’s a bit of a story, but here’s the Reader’s Digest Condensed version. I met a girl 5+ years ago through a site that assists young adults in leaving oppressive, abusive, religious homes. I signed on to assist in the cause, figuring I’d get an Amish person (since I lived close to an Amish community at the time). Instead, I got a Muslim girl who goes by Sarah, and who is now 25. She was raised Muslim, but she no longer believes. Although she wanted to escape years ago, she was too scared, but we’ve kept in touch over the years.

Well now her family is basically holding her hostage (they found out she was briefly seeing a young man) – she isn’t allowed to go to college, get a job, or drive. They took her car. They literally have padlocks on doors, and her mother has locked her in her room in the past. She has secretly been attending Eastern Michigan University online, and she has just one semester left, but these final classes are being held at the school starting in September. She really, REALLY wants to finish her degree, since she’s worked so hard to get this far. She has had two friends tell her she could stay with them, but they recently backed out, and now she’s looking into shelters. She plans on getting a job as soon as she escapes (she has worked in medical offices), because she can’t stand the idea of being a burden on anyone.

She is scared to put her photo online, so I told her I’d reach out to some people on couchsurfing, just to see if I could find a place for her to stay temporarily or to see if someone up in that area would have any ideas, as I live in Florida now. Maybe she could stay at a hostel!!!! Or maybe she could stay with one person for a few days, another person for a few days, find a job, and find a roommate. She’s very smart and extremely driven. I’d be willing to contribute financially to help her with rent, but the whole first/last month, utilities hookup, and all that would be beyond my budget.

Sorry to lay all this out there. I know it is pretty intense. I’ve called some shelters for her, as she can’t talk on the phone, and they are at capacity. I don’t know what else to do, so I’m going to send this out to a few female verified couchsurfers and hope for the best.

Thank you in advance for any input! If you know of anyone who needs a roommate just until mid December, let me know. Thank you so much for just reading this. I’ll understand if you think I’m crazy and don’t respond. :)”

“Hardcore Q believers think that JFK Jr. is not only alive and well, but also that he plans to emerge from his 20-year hiatus from public life by coming out and supporting Trump as his running mate in 2020. Moreover, they believe that a guy in Pittsburgh named Vincent Fusca is actually JFK Jr. in disguise, and they have made T-shirts promoting this belief. (Seriously. You can buy them on Amazon.) The theory that JFK Jr. is alive and a Trump supporter and a hirsute former financial services professional who lives in Pittsburgh has been percolating in QAnon forums for at least the past year. But it recently made a resurgence on YouTube, where QAnon supporters are posting tutorials for how to make JFK Jr. face masks to wear to Trump’s much-hyped July 4th rally, when they believe JFK Jr. will finally emerge from hiding. The goal of the masks, according to Daily Beast reporter Will Sommer, is for believers to be able to easily identify other QAnon supporters (though, frankly, this seems unlikely, as the shock of seeing a long-dead celebrity casually walking around Washington would almost certainly inspire mass fear and panic in the streets).”
