I thought I loved Elizabeth Warren before…

…but, damn, her performance tonight is going to make me break out my credit card yet again and make another contribution.

She’s great but c’mon. She was just the first to ape Bernie’s lifelong platform and is the most authentic at repeating it. Every one of these candidate is some diluted version of Bernie.

At this point, I think we are well-served by having Bernie, and Warren, and Mayor Pete all involved in his debate.

  4. Posted July 30, 2019 at 10:01 pm | Permalink

I agree that Bernie, Warren and Pete did the best, and my hope is that we soon get to the point where all of those running fit on one stage. With that said, however, I liked that a few of our more moderate Democratic candidates were on the stage tonight, raising questions about the progressive policies being championed by those further to the left. It’s a good conversation to have, I think, and I enjoyed watching them mix it up.

While I’m not in total agreement with Warren on certain things, like her call to get rid of private insurance in one fell swoop, I respect her conviction, and he willingness to stand up and say what she believes, even when it’s not something that most American’s are supportive of. And I think she did admirably tonight, articulating her positions.

I wasn’t expecting the fire from Warren tonight. And I certainly wasn’t expecting the focus on Delaney.

Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders formed a tag team on the debate stage to defend their liberal policies against moderates on the attack.

The leading liberals in the Democratic presidential primary, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, strenuously fought back on Tuesday against accusations of making fanciful promises and imperiling the party’s prospects for defeating President Trump, as a group of moderate underdogs sought to slow their momentum in the second round of debates.

My rankings based on the first two hours: Warren, Bullock (?!), Klobuchar – I’m a moderate at heart, but, yeah, Mark, I’m almost on Team Warren. Imagine a Cabinet filled with these people (not Williamson) – the competence, the knowledge, the decency!

I heard here that racism is the power-holding majority excluding minorities so I don’t see how you can vote for “Whitey” when there are a number of “POC” candidates unless you are racist by your own standard. Then you would be in danger of sexism unless you voted for Kamala. It’s a simple algorithm you use so you have to follow it or be full of shit. Kamala Harris is your candidate.

Actual racism would be voting for Harris just because she’s black, dum-dum. She isn’t the best candy by a long shot. She can’t even get her healthcare opinion straight from one day to the next. She’d still be miles better than the Cheeto in Chief though. And thanks for playing, asshole.

By the maynardite standard the only possibly better candidate would be if Michelle turns out to be a genetic male. Then it would be all sewed up: an African American transgender candidate, the trifecta of identity politics. If you didn’t vote for her or even if you had any criticisms at all you would be a racist, sexist homophobe so the choice is clear.

    Posted August 1, 2019 at 9:56 am | Permalink

    FF,

My opinion of Kamala Harris would take a long time to explain. I think she’s a strong candidate within the bounds of what matters in today’s political landscape. She has the image, social skill and presence which are strengths in this particular political environment.

I liked HW’s joke about her being a sleeper candidate. (I have to give credit where it’s due.) But it’s also important to remember it is most likely Trump she would be running against were she to get the nomination. Kamala’s personal conduct, morality and ethics would not hurt her much when measured against Trump’s, and that would be the unavoidable comparison in almost everyone’s minds. The comparison would also be a constant reminder of a double standard which all women and many men find absolutely abhorrent and disgusting.

That’s the sort of angle that makes Harris a strong candidate in this particular circumstance.

I personally am much more in line with Tulsi than with any of the other current Democratic candidates.

  37. Frosted Flakes
    Posted August 1, 2019 at 10:05 am | Permalink

Tulsi is powerful in a good way. It is so weird that more people don’t talk about her more. Her lack of popularity has an upside: It probably increased the odds of you spending time with her?

While I understand where you’re coming from on your comments about Harris, I can’t say I agree.

I’ve been a polical strategist of sorts for three decades, so my thinking about these things is somewhat cold and calculating. From that perspective, I can explain why Harris is a strong candidate.

The obvious advantages she brings are her ethnicity and her gender. If she were to become the Democratic Party’s nominee, getting support among ethnic minorities and getting them out to vote will be so much easier than it would be with one of those geezer crackers. It would be a similar story with female voters.

    * for the record, I don’t keep mentioning my involvement in politics to be an asshole. I only do it to remind people WHY I’m such an asshole.

Trump’s empire and only actual honest income was his dopey reality show. Why else would he be hiding his taxes? He’s either completely corrupt or actually cash poor. Probably both. I love that dumbo’s like you admire him most for his wealth and business genius. Step one: inherit a business and millions from your scumbag father. Step two: practice dishonest business for decades. FF,

Yes, I agree with your assessment of Tulsi’s powerful presence and nature.

More people aren’t talking about her because there is a deliberate embargo against her by the corporate media, because her platform is highly critical and threatening to corporate media and their masters.

Tulsi is considerably more accessible than the four leading in the polls. Still, she was pretty busy and mobbed with supporters last night. In Iowa I will probably have a chance to have very in-depth and long conversation with her. She and I didn’t say much to one another last night. I chose to let a friend of mine dominate the conversation with her. I listened mostly.

    FF,

I do think you’re right that Harris has some glaring faults and as a result some serious vulnerabilities as a candidate. If you and I were working for an opponent of hers I think we could put together a good strategy for “exposing” her the way Tulsi did a bit last night. Harris has to flat out pretend Tulsi didn’t even say what she did about Harris’ blocking efforts to make public information which exonerated innocent individuals who had been falsely accused and/or imprisoned. I don’t know the exact details of what Tulsi brought up, but I recognized right away what she was doing.

Aloha, This is an interesting development I have been picking bits and pieces up about over the last few days. The Quincy Institute was just formed. I have read that the two plutocrats funding the institute are Charles Kock (maybe his brother as well I don’t know) and George Soros.
Andrew Bacevich is listed as a co-founder. Here is an article of his just published in the Boston Globe. If any of you have ever listened to Tulsi’s speeches on US foreign policy you would swear that Bacevish plagiarized much from them.
    My gut reaction is
The elite see the people coming and hope to co-opt (they always use the same strategies and tactics) the movement that both Trump and now Gabbard represent–Easy to neuter and buy off a coward like Trump–they know Tulsi has courage and character.

On the other hand they may actually be wanting to help transition the US away from this senseless American exceptionalism.

Aloha, The Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft was announced four days after Tulsi debate where 10 million + Americans got to hear a Democrat speak up about ending the “insanity” of our regime change wars, and was the most searched for on Google.

Coincidence ? or cause and effect?

Aloha iRobert, When Harris started her “Biden is a racist” smear, the only candidate who stepped up in Biden’s defense was Tulsi. Warren’s whole candidacy is to dilute the Sanders supporters and through the nomination into a 2nd. ballot at the convention when the party elders will choose Biden–Tulsi is playing a long game, she knows the future is very grim if Trump hangs on. If you listen to her speeches, she is speaking Unity—only attacking candidates who attack other Democrats–ie. Harris (attacked Biden, Ryan attacked her).

She would have already dispatched the Navy to help our neighbors.

Fred Thompson served in that function during the 2008 GOP primary selection process. He got in just at the right moment to split the supoort that was going to Huckabee, and got out right after Huckabee had been sufficiently deprived of the delegates he would have needed to prevail.

iRobert, I get it now. I had to jog my memory but now that I have, I remember discussing this sort of thing in an Econ class. We were discussing the premise of most Economic theory that everyone is a rational actor. The decoy effect is something which shows they may not be.

I still doubt highly that either EW or BS would want to be a decoy candidate. Nor is it obvious who might benefit if either of them were. Possibly the more centrist candidates but it is also entirely possible that it could benefit EW in that she seems just a tad less extreme both in personality and policy than BS. That could make her somewhat leftist policies seem more reasonable to undecided voters.
