On a campaign stop in Michigan today, Elizabeth Warren calls for a constitutional amendment to end gerrymandering, get corporate money out of politics, and protect voting rights

We know for a certainty that the tide is turning against the Republican Party demographically speaking. And, as a result, we know that the Republican Party, in an effort to retain power, has been devoting more time, effort and resources to gerrymandering, voter suppression and other activities intended to prevent non-Republicans from voting, like continuing to whittle away at the Voting Rights Act. Today, in a New York Times op-ed, David Brooks did a pretty good job of articulating just bad the situation faced by Republicans really is. “To put it bluntly,” Brooks writes, “young adults hate them.” Here’s an excerpt from the article laying out the details.

…In 2018, voters under 30 supported Democratic House candidates over Republican ones by an astounding 67 percent to 32 percent. A 2018 Pew survey found that 59 percent of millennial voters identify as Democrats or lean Democratic, while only 32 percent identify as Republicans or lean Republican.

The difference is ideological. According to Pew, 57 percent of millennials call themselves consistently liberal or mostly liberal. Only 12 percent call themselves consistently conservative or mostly conservative. This is the most important statistic in American politics right now.

Recent surveys of Generation Z voters (those born after 1996) find that, if anything, they are even more liberal than millennials…

And, of course, those percentages are almost assuredly higher among young, non-white voters, which, again, is why we’re seeing Republicans putting the kind of effort into voter suppression that, in a more sane world, they’d be putting into things that actually help the American people, like health care and education. But, of coarse, the Party’s objective isn’t to actually help advance the interests of the American people, but to pass tax cuts for the billionaire class, ensuring that they continue to make their financial contributions. And it’s going to get worse as this demographic problem for Republicans intensifies, and they become more desperate.

For those of you who might have missed it, a really interesting story broke in the press last week about how it came to be that Republican decided to change the 2020 census form to include a question about citizenship. It turns out that it was a plan put in place by recently-deceased Republican redistricting strategist Thomas Hofeller, who had told the Trump administration that doing so “would be advantageous to Republicans and non-Hispanic whites.” And we know not only that Hofeller was behind it, but we know exactly how the whole thing went down, as Hofeller’s daughter found all of his files when going through his belongings after his death last August, and turned them over to civil rights organizations. And we know this now because quotes from Hofeller’s, like the one above, have been showing up in U.S. District Court filings.

The idea is pretty simple… You add a question to the census asking U.S. residents about their citizenship status, and, in doing so, you ensure that a large percentage of America’s immigrant population, already fearful as a result of Donald Trump’s policies and clearly racist statements, don’t respond. And, in turn, immigrant populations are undercounted, causing historically Democratic districts to be drawn larger than they should be, thereby increasing the number of Republican districts, especially in states like Texas, with large Hispanic populations.

According to the Washington Post, Census Bureau estimates suggest that “the percentage of residents excluded would range from a 35.8 percent drop in Texas to a 20.3 percent drop in Maine,” if this citizenship question were to be added.

So, we now have evidence proving what many of us had thought all along… which is that this “census question” was intended to preserve white, conservative political power at the expense of minority communities.

And that’s just one example. We’re also dealing with rampant gerrymandering, court rulings that allow unlimited corporate money in politics, coordinated voter suppression campaigns, and, of course, the blatant, daily appeals to white-supremacists.

And, with that, I give you the following video of my candidate for president, Elizabeth Warren, in Michigan today, saying that, if elected, she’ll fight for a Constitutional amendment to “roll back every damn one of these voter suppression laws, and gerrymandering!”

Warren’s plan: To pry away their tacit approval from average Trump voters by offering those folks something of real value to their day to day lives. By listening to them first and foremost. By speaking to them with respect, and knowing the difference between them and active white supremacists.

And then there’s fully engaging the FBI in a crackdown on homegrown white supremacist terrorism.

Imagine if the government was actually Anti-fascist?

Aloha EOS, The US military provides in-flight refueling for the Saudi airforce so it can carry out its bombing raids. We provide satellite imagery so they know where to bomb. We provide drone attacks and surveillance for them. We provide training so they can fly the jets. Our Navy assist in the sea blockade and also search and rescue operations for downed Saudi pilots.
And then of course there are the other Saudi allies Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, you know those people who attacked us on 9-11.
The Iranians did not lead an uprising. There has been an on-going civil war in Yemen since the early 2000’s. Various attempts to reach a negotiated settlement failed. The Houthis are not Shiite or Sunni. The Wahabi ideology of the Saudi Royals calls for the extermination of all “apostates”, who are considered worse than “non-believers” thus ISSIS war on the Yadis and Iraqi Shiites, and the Saudi support for AQAP and the Islamic State.

Aloha EOS, Osama Bin Laden was born a Saudi subject and recognized that as his citizenship. He was a member of a Yemini clan (clans cross international borders, my mothers family are members of the Tarnawa clan whose members can be found in Poland, Croatia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belorussia, Pakistan and Japan–you figure out those connections).
Houthis are primarily members of the Zaidi sect, whom the Saudis want everyone to think is the same as Iranian Shia. The Zaidi follow some what different practices. It would be like saying since I’m Roman Catholic and you are Orthodox Russian we follow the same faith. From the perspective of a Calvinist I suppose it looks that way. To those who practice the faith, they are quit different and historically has not kept Catholic and Orthodox folks from killing each other.
The Saudi Royal family —think about that–the country is owned by them. They are absolute monarchs who finance an ideology of extremism called Wahhabism. They are not the main stream of Sunni religious thought.
The evil Iranians practice a form of democracy at least.

My brother went to boarding school with Tucker Carlson. Same class. They argued politics constantly. Tucker argued politics constantly with anyone who would have him. He liked to win arguments unfairly. He often morphed his position mid argument in order to win. And then changed it back again. He wasn’t a genius or even especially smart. He just liked to argue. I think blowhard was the term my brother used. He’s for sure not smarter than most of the people here. He has been interested in politics for a very long time. He has not changed very much.

Carlson has been rebranding himself as a populist lately, because he sees the way the political winds are blowing, but no one expressed more smug disregard for the working class than Carlson. His dad married an heiress. He grew up extremely rich and isolated with almost no contact with anyone working class who wasn’t a servant. There are only so many people in this country who can say they don’t know any working class people. Carlson is one of them.

Warren doesn’t need him. I don’t trust his interest in Warren at all.

Carlson ended that bit on Warren arguing for a new GOP that is populist on economics and conservative on social policy. That’s a good strategy to save the GOP but I can assure you it’s more strategy than deeply held belief and that he’s only willing to go so far on economic reform.

Consider why the Arab uprising extended to creating instability in multiple Middle Eastern countries. Consider how the extremely poor in Yemen, Egypt, Libya, Somali, Syria and others are being manipulated with false promises in order to consolidate power and eventual takeover by Iran and Russia. Consider how that would effect the geopolitics of the world. Consider who came to our aid after the USS Cole was bombed in the Yemeni harbor.

I’m thankful we don’t have troops on the ground in Yemen, but not opposed to the limited support we are giving our ally to defend against an uprising on their border. Just as we don’t want Soviet missiles in Cuba, SA is reluctant to have Iranian weapons targeting them from Yemen.

I don’t think he is interested in Warren either. He was using Warren to call out Republican leaders, however. Like you said he is calling on Republican’s to simultaneously hold onto their conservative social messaging while stressing more populist economic messaging. The populist economic messaging is how Trump won, imo, so it is not a new idea. MAGA was never about racism or xenophobia it was about economics….

Tucker also pointed out something that Warren is doing that is good strategy. Warren did not exploit identity politics in the quote of hers, he read… She will benefit from continuing to resist that impulse in the future, imo…

I think you underestimate just how dumb and not even-handed we are here at mm.com. The fine people at mm.com have been going through a process of de-evolution for awhile now….Tucker, on the other hand, has been showing undeniable signs of personal growth, as weird as that might sound to you. It sounds weird to me too, actually, but I think it is true.

Today, I remember my Uncle Bobby and all that he fought for. I also am thinking of my Aunt Ethel and their kids who continue his legacy. Gun violence rips a hole in families for the rest of their lives. May we all understand this and work together to curb it. Now.

New York Times: “President Trump claimed executive privilege to block Congress’s access to documents about how a citizenship question was added to the 2020 census.”

President Trump claimed executive privilege to block Congress’ access to documents about how a citizenship question was added to the 2020 census ahead of a House committee vote to recommend two cabinet secretaries be held in contempt of Congress over the matter.

The House Oversight and Reform Committee was expected to vote on Wednesday to recommend that the House hold Attorney General William P. Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur L. Ross Jr. in contempt over their refusal to cooperate with the panel’s investigation into the citizenship question.

The chairman, Representative Elijah E. Cummings, Democrat of Maryland, postponed the vote until Wednesday afternoon in light of the blanket assertion of executive privilege.

“We must protect the integrity of the census, and we will stand up for Congress’ authority under the Constitution to conduct meaningful oversight,” Mr. Cummings said. Administration officials, he said, “have made clear, very clear that they will not produce key documents that we have identified as priorities.”

Why would counting American citizens and non-citizens threaten census integrity?

  91. Anonymous
    Posted June 12, 2019 at 2:40 pm | Permalink

The census is used as an estimate of per capita resource allocation for general services that are applied to a population, regardless of citizenship status. Things like fire protection, police protection, emergency services, utilities such as water and electric, road distribution, public health. It becomes an issue when a significant portion of the population is undocumented and will not answer the survey, leading to an underestimate of resource need, and then a real problem when those resources are needed, even if restricted to “legal” residents. Now, of course, the glib response would be to say “deport them all”, but the reality is that these undocumented residents (or illegal criminals, if you will) are an embedded part of the community and economy, mainly because there is not a good functional guest worker program that accommodates what is really happening. It’s like outlawing alcohol in hopes that people will stop drinking. Didn’t work. Now we are moving to decriminalizing marijuana, recognizing the reality that it is used recreationally by a significant portion of the population. No point in making a quarter of the population class I drug abusers. Better to acknowledge reality than to deny it.

Aloha FF, You are absolutely right. But it hardly matters. Since the 20’s when Congress chose to limit the size of the House of Representative to 435 underpopulated regions of the country have had a disproportional effect on our politics. The end of proportional representation has been one of the main weapons in preserving privilege and undermining democracy and equality. Allow for true proportional representation at the level of 1920 (1 representative per 245,000 vs. 1 per 710000 today). The additional 900 approx. representatives would all be from the coasts, and urban areas.
What was happening in the 20’s that prompted Congress to self limit its size you might ask. How about all of our grandparents immigrating here. Between 1910 and 1920 the population grew by 15%–many of them like my grand parents from Eastern Europe. It was racism then and it is racism now.
Puerto Rico statehood is seen by many as the way out. I’ m all for it, 2 new Senators, but I believe returning representation to historical levels is also necessary.
I clearly laid out some dogma here, but I’m just a dolt who assumes more democracy is a good thing.

“Why would counting American citizens and non-citizens threaten census integrity?” –HW

–It’s already well established that undocumented residents will not participate in programs that require ID or citizen status to be stated (lying would be a crime). More so now. Further, Trump’s targeting for removal even legal residents who have committed infractions of any kind during their entire time here (even decades ago) adds to that effect. He has discussed going after naturalized citizens as well.

The census is mandated in the constitution to count all residents. the part about Indians being excluded has been amended. Trump is taking steps to exclude them again. (Yes, most South Americans are Indian). This will give the GOP electoral advantage and reduce necessary human services funding to areas with many immigrants of any status.

The only way to GOP can win elections is to game the system. They should have the support of socially conservative people of color, but they keep taking steps like this to alienate them.

Crusty, corroded logic circuit there. How does determining the individual’s citizenship mean they are not counted? Everyone would be counted, citizens and non-citizens. If they try to hide then maybe they shouldn’t be here. Why should the USA spend billions and billions every year to support people who sneak in and sneak around?

That’s because the GOP is not really only socially conservative. It’s because the the GOP is socially conservative and Eurocentric. Both elements are necessary, not one or the other. Hence this weird Democratic “alliance” of liberal gay whites and conservative muslim Asians, something that only exists in America.

Meanwhile, Iran has executed a “defence ministry contractor” convicted of spying for the CIA, semi-official news agency ISNA reported.
“The execution sentence was carried out for Jalal Haji Zavar, a contractor for the defence ministry’s aerospace organisation who spied for the CIA and the American government,” ISNA reported, quoting the Iranian military.
ISNA said he was convicted by Iran’s military court and that he was executed, at an unspecified time, at the Rajayi Shahr prison in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran.
The agency did not say when Zavar was arrested, noting however that his contract with the defence ministry had been terminated during the Iranian year 1389 (March 2010-2011).
