Offering no evidence, William Barr tells Congress, “I think spying did occur” on Trump campaign by intel agencies in 2016

Attorney General William Barr, testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee today, let it be known that, in his opinion, “spying did occur” on the Trump campaign by U.S. intelligence agencies in 2016. Barr not only offered no evidence to back up this surprising claim, but, upon further questioning, said that he would not be “putting together a panel” to investigate the matter further, which would seem to indicate that knows full well that the investigation into the campaign was completely warranted, given the overwhelming evidence of Russian election interference and the numerous unreported meetings between members of Trump’s inner circle and individuals with ties to the Russian government. But yet he said it anyway. The question is why. Why would Barr, without evidence of wrongdoing, knowing that none exists, suggest that the intelligence community had been out to get Donald Trump in 2016?

Here, if you’ve yet to see it, is footage of Barr throwing chum to the rabid conspiracy theorists that now form the base of the Republican Party — people who actually believe that the intelligence community, directed by a liberal, globalist cabal of child sex traffickers, had illegally spied on the heroic, truth-telling Donald Trump without justification.

Later in his testimony, Barr would back away from the word “spying,” and would attempt to distance himself from the accusation that the intelligence community had conspired against Donald Trump. “I’m not suggesting that (the investigation) wasn’t adequately predicated,” he told the Senators, who had been understandably caught off-guard by his earlier comments about “spying”.

Seizing on Barr’s earlier comment, and ignoring the fact that he’d eventually walked back what he’d said, Donald Trump and his supporters once again went on the offensive, demanding members of the intelligence community be made to pay a price for what they’d done. Here’s a tweet from earlier today, in which Donald Trump suggests that the whole investigation was nothing more than a “treasonous hoax”.

To those who said that we should give Barr the benefit of the doubt over his poor handling of the Mueller report — which he still hasn’t given to Congress, by the way — I think we’ve now seen enough to know that his intentions are far from good. At every turn, he’s done Donald Trump’s bidding, and it just seems to be getting worse. He clearly doesn’t care about the long term damage being done to the intelligence agencies that he presides over as Attorney General, or the harm that he’s doing by sewing these seeds of distrust in American institutions. All he seems to care about is muddying the waters in hopes of helping Donald Trump to avoid facing the consequences of his actions. He was clearly selected for the job because he promised to shield Donald Trump for any investigations, and it would appear that every decision he’s made since has been with that objective in mind… I didn’t think it possible, but he’s making Jeff Sessions look like a heroic paragon of virtue in comparison.

Senator Mark Warner, I think, said it best. “Mr. Barr knows how counter-intel investigations work,” he said. “He knows there was ample evidence of Russian attempts to infiltrate the Trump campaign and that the FBI took lawful action to stop it. Giving a wink and a nod to this long-debunked “spying” conspiracy theory is irresponsible.

And, like that, we’re seeing the reputation of yet one more person in Trump’s orbit turn to shit.

They used a fraudulent dossier, paid for by Clinton, delivered by McCain, to plant operatives within the Trump campaign and to eavesdrop on conversations in the Trump tower. Even still, they failed to obtain evidence to implicate Trump in any collusion. The evidence Barr alluded to will be in the redacted portions of the Muller report released in the next few days due to the ongoing IG and grand jury investigations.

Something I don’t get is why a witch hunt would completely exonerate Trump. Witch hunts usually end with a mob burning the witch. The only way it makes sense is if the final report will reveal Mueller was not actually investigating Trump but Hillary, and the conclusion is she was the one colluding with the Russians to try to sabotage Trump. We may find out Flynn, Sessions, Manafort, Gates, Papadopoulos were all secretly working for the Democrats to make Trump look bad. We may even find out that the Trump tower meeting really was about Russian orphans. The Russians may have wanted to resume trafficking orphans to Clinton’s sex club, but the Trump campaign wouldn’t go for it. Admittedly I am a stupid hick but it makes sense doesn’t it?

There are a lot of political risks in pursuing a counter investigation into anyone who instigated the investigation into the Russian meddling and the possibility of any Trump campaign collusion.

This is all a fight for public opinion. Both sides may push more on this and it will result in further polarization. The question is how many folks beyond the core Trump supporters can be swayed by this, and in which direction.

There are a lot of people who perceive everything beyond their experience or imagination to be “conspiracy theory.” But there are also lots of people who seem to be ready to jump on any “conspiracy theory” that appeals to their anger and desire to scapegoat.

Of course, there are also some people who reserve judgement and base any conclusions they do come to on what is suggested by the strength of evidence. But that is a small minority of people. The fight is focussed on the sway of the most manipulatable masses.

Call me crazy but I think that if there is evidence of multi=pronged Russian interference in a US election to favor one candidate over another and there is evidence of multiple connections within the campaign to Russian oligarchs and the Kremlin, then intelligence agencies surveilling that campaign seems not only reasonable but necessary.

Please note that no accusations of unfair conviction have emerged. It seems like our intelligence agencies have been acting with a restraint unfamiliar to Trump and co.

The HRC investigation was conducted by corrupted officials. The rank and file gathered more than enough evidence to indict, the Attorney General was promised a SC appointment on the tarmac, Comey stepped in because he was afraid that the evidence of the quid pro quo would surface and wanted to be the one who exonerated HRC, causing a great deal of perplexity among the FBI rank and file, who have subsequently testified to the grand juries. It wasn’t his call and was against all protocol.

There was a reason why our Intelligence agencies should monitor foreign interference. The method they used at the FISA court, i.e. fictional accounts of golden showers, was fraudulent.

Aloha, Thank you! Today, we hit our 65,000 donor goal!

Hitting this goal means that I will be able to stand on the debate stage in June and bring our campaign’s vision for America — with peace and prosperity for all — to an even larger audience. We could not have done it without you and every volunteer and supporter who has chosen to stand with us.

In a few days — on my 38th birthday, April 12 — campaign volunteers around the country are finding opportunities to serve in their communities. It’s the best birthday present I can think of and the way I want to celebrate reaching this historic milestone of 65,000 donors to our campaign.

Will you join us? Click here to pledge to make April 12 a day of service wherever you live.

I’m excited to see you in action, and share your photos and stories of service. Be sure to sign up, then tag your photos on social media #ServiceAboveSelf.

When we first heard about the DNC’s requirement of 65,000 individual donors to make it to the debate state in June, we had a small list and a bootstrapped team. The fact that we have reached this goal now, hailing from Hawaii and refusing to take any money from PACs, is huge.

We don’t have many of the built in advantages of other candidates in the race. But we are succeeding because we stand strong for what the American people want and need: leadership free from corruption and warmongering, that puts people before profits; leaders who will not drag us into one regime change war after another, inflaming the new Cold War and nuclear arms race that has been and will continue to drain trillions of dollars from our economy and threaten our communities, nation, and planet.

The American people deserve leaders that put service before self. So this weekend, let’s put that attitude of service into action in our communities. Let’s be examples of the spirit we need in this country, whether that’s by cleaning up a neighborhood park or beach, volunteering for the day at a senior citizen center or animal shelter, starting a community garden, or organizing meals for the houseless.

Please join us on April 12 in serving our communities or others in a practical way so we can live the values we want to see in the world, which are the reasons we began this campaign.

Thank you for all you do,
    Tulsi

I’m not here to argue with you, I’m only here to encourage you to question why you believe you’ve been right about ANYTHING.

“I told you no collusion from the very start.”

Yes, you reliably and uncritically parrot Trump, which means 97% of the time you’re repeating his self-serving lies. You can tell he’s a manipulative liar, can’t you? Why do you automatically accept his self-serving spin about Barr’s SUMMARY of a report that hasn’t been released? It’s notable Barr’s summary doesn’t refer to any evidence that exculpates Trump, all we know at this point is there wasn’t enough evidence to establish conspiracy. Barr’s summary does, however, clearly state that Russia hacked the Clinton campaign emails and ran a disinformation campaign to interfere with our election. So do you accept that conclusion or are you still receptive to Seth Rich conspiracy theories?

“Told you the dossier was bogus.”

    1) Did Barr’s summary say the dossier was bogus? 2) Did I ever say the dossier was NOT bogus? 3) So what about it? It could be completely true or completely false and not have any relevance to the finding that Russia hacked Clinton’s email and ran a disinformation campaign to benefit Trump. Which is, by the way, something Trump continues to try to deny.

“Told you there was a spy campaign against Trump.”

The point of Mark’s article that we’re commenting about here is that Barr said, without evidence, that he thinks spying occurred. So now you too are parroting, without evidence, what Barr says. Shouldn’t you wait until the FBI investigates and reports its findings before you claim victory?

“Told you McCabe would be fired. Told you all those dirty FBI people would be removed.”

You don’t have to be a genius to notice that Trump fires anyone he perceives as a threat. Where did I disagree with you on that point? Did anyone here “lose” an argument with you about that?

As I said before in different comments: you have terrible judgement, you need to think more critically about why you believe what you do, you should lay off whatever so-called “conservative” media you’ve been consuming, and you won’t get well until you do, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Just keep trying to do better and you will get better.

The minute I heard about the dossier I said it sounds phony so no parroting; calling it like I see it. You are the one who believes that conspiracy theory. If there was a video why has no one but Tom Arnold seen it and NO ONE in the world has come forward with it? I’m surprised they didn’t put out a fake vid. Probably knew it would be forensically analyzed for fakery so they balked.

Barr quotes the Mueller report: “[T]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.”

I’d say that goes beyond “Well we have evidence but not enough to convict him.”

Barr said the COUNSEL found that Russia hacked a DNC server. That’s what the FBI concluded based on CrowdStrike’s word. Did Mueller use any better info than that? If not, why? Why should anyone believe them? They were paid by the DNC. So if Assange blows the lid off the murder of Seth Rich you have to admit you are the one who believed in a DNC conspiracy theory, not me. Right?

I really don’t understand why someone would think Barr’s expression would need to be accompanied with evidence. He is announcing that he would like to investigate whether or not there is evidence of wrong doing.

What is abnormal about what Barr said? Are people really so hung up on the word “spy”? Barr announced that he wants to figure out if there was legitimate “probable cause” for the surveillance of Trump’s team. The surveillance is a fact. How is it not normal to want to make sure the surveillance occurs through legal processes? How is it not a normal thing to want to try to investigate?

Although I don’t like to predict the future. I will say– Comey had an interesting little response where he claimed to be clueless about what Barr means by “spying”. How did other people read that comment? It seemed extremely insincere to me. Voice was high pitched. Looking off into space. Total lack of confidence in his voice. Sounded defensive. He looked and sounded like a guilty child desperate to pretend he did nothing wrong right after getting caught….We will see….

Assange will be fine. That is so we could have him extradited. He’s going to testify how he got the DNC emails. Notice the President “loved Wikileaks” during the campaign but now says he doesn’t know about it? Optics. It can’t look like Assange and Trump are working together so he is distancing himself now.

Your comment about how I would never accept reality even if Trump was in jail is strong evidence of hypocrisy. You won’t accept reality now that Mueller found nothing. No convictions for conspiring with Russia.

It’s 100% true that maybe there could have been a secret communication from Pootin to Drumpf. That makes a lot of sense. It’s hard to believe you aren’t actually trolling the leftists. It makes the group look sooo bad. There are several of you characters that do that. I think it is good because no doubt it drives people away. Barely anyone posts here anymore for example. I wonder how many lurkers see how backwards you are and how what I say makes sense.

Aloha JH, only those governments that do not believe in democracy have any reason to fear good journalism. I think the people have the right to know what is done in their name. Don’t you? Otherwise we are simple minded subjects to be ruled.

I think Sad is reaching back to the sexual assault charge, as if that is anything but pretext. Wikileaks is the enemy of criminals, so of course they are the one’s who will be prosecuted. The release of Vault 7, ie. the cyber hacking technologies that the CIA utilizes to control our politicians (among other nefarious and illegal purposes) is the main reason the Trump Administration wants Assange forever sealed up in the gulag. As Tulsi said, toe the line or pay the price. We need politician with courage. She seems to be the only one with the spine and the courage of her convictions, all the rest seem to bought and paid for cowards and opportunist. Mike Gravel is another one with convictions, but he’s a Tulsi man too.

Assange was not extradited on sexual assault charges but on hacking into government classified documents. The sexual assault charges remain viable however and can not be dismissed as they have not been tried. They seem credible to me. I’m unclear as to why you are certain they are pretext v legitimate claims. What evidence do you have to support that conclusion, Wobblie?

Aloha, THE DEEP STATE VS. WIKILEAKS

Essential background. Keep it for further reference.

This was the scale of the US Grand Jury investigation of WikiLeaks already in 2012, Obama time – as revealed then by WikiLeaks itself:

“The US Government has stood up and coordinated a joint interagency criminal investigation of Wikileaks comprised of a partnership between the Department of Defense (DOD) including: CENTCOM; SOUTHCOM; the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA); Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA); Headquarters Department of the Army (HQDA); US Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) for USFI (US Forces Iraq) and 1st Armored Division (AD); US Army Computer Crimes Investigative Unit (CCIU); 2nd Army (US Army Cyber Command); Within that or in addition, three military intelligence investigations were conducted. Department of Justice (DOJ) Grand Jury and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Department of State (DOS) and Diplomatic Security Service (DSS). In addition, Wikileaks has been investigated by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), Office of the National CounterIntelligence Executive (ONCIX), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA); the House Oversight Committee; the National Security Staff Interagency Committee, and the PIAB (President’s Intelligence Advisory Board).”

John Pilger adds inestimable background very few people are aware of – still under the Cheney regime, concerning the shady Cyber Counter-intelligence Assessments Branch.

    https://www.counterpunch.org/…/18/bring-julian-assange-home/

“In 2008, a plan to destroy both WikiLeaks and Assange was laid out in a top secret document dated 8 March, 2008. The authors were the Cyber Counter-intelligence Assessments Branch of the US Defence Department. They described in detail how important it was to destroy the “feeling of trust” that is WikiLeaks’ “centre of gravity”.

This would be achieved, they wrote, with threats of “exposure [and] criminal prosecution” and a unrelenting assault on reputation. The aim was to silence and criminalise WikiLeaks and its editor and publisher. It was as if they planned a war on a single human being and on the very principle of freedom of speech.

Their main weapon would be personal smear. Their shock troops would be enlisted in the media — those who are meant to keep the record straight and tell us the truth.”

That’s all you need to know who you see how AP, Reuters, NYT, WaPo, BBC, Guardian and others are covering the arrest of Julian Assange.

The crimes were committed by Bradley/Chelsea Manning. He was convicted by court-martial in July 2013 of violations of the Espionage Act and other offenses, after disclosing to WikiLeaks nearly 750,000 classified, or unclassified but sensitive, military and diplomatic documents. Manning was found guilty of 20 counts, including espionage, theft and computer fraud and faced a sentence of as much as 136 years. He was actually sentenced to 35 years in prison. President Obama granted him clemency and released him from prison after only 7 years.

Assange published the information he received, an act which was determined to be legal in the matter of the Pentagon Papers.

    @JH,

Supposedly two women claim to have been sexually assaulted. The first woman’s claim is that he intentionally broke the condom. How does one prove that in a court of law? What evidence do you have that makes you believe “Miss W’s” story (the other woman)? She met Assange and invited him home with her. Had consensual sex in the middle of the night and then claims that he “pentetrated” her in the morning without her consent while she was “asleep”. Sounds like she woke up and asked him to stop. She made the accusation shortly after Assange became famous for Wikileaks. Even Michael Moore thinks the women’s claims are fraudulent. Of course the Swedish government did not extradite him and the statute of limitations will likely lapse without any charges. No one should be charged solely because “she says so”.
