I hate that, in the America of Donald Trump, trolling the left has become a legitimate career path

I want desperately to put on some comically large fake glasses, tuck all my hair up into a baseball cap, and drive the three hours to Kent State, just so I can get on Twitter and post, “Today I went undercover at Kent State to ask students what they thought about Mark Maynard, the Hot Channels boy of Ypsilanti.”

“What if I were to tell you that I am Mark Maynard,” I’d say to the bewildered students of Kent State while dramatically taking off my large, black glasses with a flourish, “the boy from Ypsilanti who, just a few days ago, went public with his intention to track down the Mark III virtual reality console from the 1973 adult feature Hot Channels?”

Now, if one of you could just find a baseball cap with some flowers on it, a pair of Iris Apfel’s glasses, and enough gas money to get me there and back with a small film crew.

I’m sorry. I know I should be posting about nonsense like this, but I couldn’t help myself.

While I detest any number of people, I have a particular dislike for this young women, who, in hopes of making a name for herself among far right agitators, took an assault weapon on the campus of Kent State, where, on May 4, 1970, four college students, engaged in a peaceful protest, were gunned down by members of the National Guard. I know I should just ignore her, as she’s only doing this for attention, but the fact that she continues to milk this ridiculous little stunt of hers, really rubs me the wrong way. I hate that, in the America of Donald Trump, trolling the left has become a legitimate career path for the young and soulless.

Why would MM go to Kent State in disguise to ask about MM? I don’t get it.

She believes in guns. She believes in guns as self defense from other citizens, invading armies, our own government.

I don’t agree with how she made her political statement because it seems very insensitive to the tragedy at Kent State. But I wonder: how are her actions boiled down to simply “trolling”? I don’t get it.

Extreme hubris when playing with guns rarely ends well.

I feel sorry for her that this is all that she has. She made a tiny blip on the radar with her stunt, and now, with no second act, her only option is to keep going back to that same well, trying to make “the Kent State gun girl” a thing.

@ Frosted Flakes—people who feel this strongly about guns are unbalanced or doing it for the money. I don’t trust anyone who puts assault weapons that high on their list of priorities. Especially since guns like that are for fun, and not self defense. Actually, I’m a little insulted on behalf of everyone here that you’d imply that gun is for self defense. Why does every gun YouTuber have 500 of them? Why do those videos get millions of views? Because guns are super fun. If people cared about defending themselves from the government they’d keep setting fire to the Supreme Court until they overturned Citizens United, or leave the country. Turns out people who fight the US army tend to lose pretty unequivocally with rare exceptions.

So yes, of course she’s trolling. She’s working social media to get money. If you think it’s a coincidence that she’s making money off this, try doing something stupid like this and getting rich without effort. You can’t…this kind of thing takes time, skill, and energy.

I’d also say it’s perfectly valid to be fed up with an attention seeking kid who has no respect for a well-documented tragedy. Guns are inherently violent objects and flaunting one at the site of a mass shooting is pretty despicable behavior. She pretty much sucks ass.

    Josh,

She has a cause. She created a visible act around that cause. Her act garnered negative and positive attention. The negative attention she received does not magically make her act “trolling”. The support she received, monetary or otherwise, in no way, necessarily makes her cause an insincere attempt to just make money.

(Whether or not she is misguided is beside the point.)

The narcissism of many on the left is insane. It is an epidemic. Someone expresses a belief they do not agree with and they often call it “trolling” . Your claim of feeling “insulted for everyone here” by me, because I, against your opinion, think her act and cause is rooted in a sincere set of beliefs beyond mere “fun” and “money making”, as you called it, has a trace of the same type of narcissism present in Mark’s post.

I should add, Josh, it is not a problem plaguing the left exclusively. Regardless of political affiliation, a lot of people are guilty of finding insincerity in the political act, or stunts, that we do not support. I am also guilty of this at times. I do think it is something we all need to take inventory of when it is time to pass judgments.

Please don’t insult my intelligence, and call me a narcissist, and then say I’m a narcissist for feeling insulted. There’s one narcissist here—she’s the one deliberately disrespecting a tragedy for income. Narcissism is self-obsession; disagreeing with someone is not that. Do you think that because I disagree with you, or this girl, or whoever, I’m self-obsessed? Does that make you a narcissist?

I don’t think so. It’s just an opinion. I would never call you a narcissist for expressing your opinion, and it saddens me that you have so little tolerance of my opinion that you feel the need to label me, and “the left”.

I don’t think she’s insincere because of her political views. That would be childish. I think she’s insincere because it’s naive to think it’s a coincidence that she’s getting money and attention for what she’s doing. People frequently adopt conservative-leaning views insincerely because those views are often a surefire way to make money, but having conservative views doesn’t automatically make you insincere.

How do you know I’m a member of “the left” anyway? For fuck’s sake, I said guns are super fun. At least treat me like a fully-fledged human with nuanced opinions. That’s how I’m treating you. All you do when you label “the left” and treat them as one unthinking entity is make people think you lack critical thinking skills. Is this conversation really so complicated that you have to boil down the entire discussion around this particular girl into “the left” and “the right?” You seem smarter than that.

Stop lumping in what I say with what the dumbest liberals are saying. I’m going to keep lumping what you say in with what the dumbest conservatives are saying, but only because you’re using their talking points. Now THAT’s an insult. Don’t be mad, though, you started it.

I don’t think it is disrespect. To do it at Kent State is a reminder of the government tyranny that the right to bear arms is supposed to guard against.

It was not my intention to make you feel insulted, again, Josh. I do however stand by what I said. Take note, I am not calling you a narcissist. I described a narcissistic impulse generally as something people of various political affiliations are guilty of, including myself, and I further suggest you and Mark might be guilty of expressing that impulse here in your interpretations of her political acts. If you don’t think I am right that is cool. However, short of providing some kind of evidence, I will continue to wonder why you are so certain she does not hold sincere belief in the second amendment rights, that goes beyond her simple love of “fun” with guns and the monetary opportunity. Frankly, short of having any evidence your way of interpreting her acts is very strange, imo. Do you have evidence she does not have sincerly held beliefs in the rights granted by the 2nd amendment?
