“Just remember: what you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.”

I wanted to write something tonight about this news that Donald “trade wars are good and easy to win” Trump was going to be asking the American taxpayers to pony up $12 billion to help offset the losses of the American soybean and dairy farmers who got totally fucked by his bright idea to jack up trade tariffs without first either laying the diplomatic groundwork or thinking through the consequences. [Just as people predicted, the rest of the world pushed back hard, completely crushing farmers in red states, forcing Trump to pay them off with our tax dollars in advance of the midterm elections.]

As I’m really tired, though, I’m going to have to leave you to work through it on your own. Here, though, is the general outline.

Our President is essentially buying the votes of red state farmers to keep himself from being impeached. And, perhaps worse yet, he’s not doing it because these farmers suddenly became aware that he’s a draft-dodging, child-abducting, pussy-grabbing, puppet of Vladimir Putin, but because he hastily announced dramatic changes to U.S. foreign trade policy without first thinking through the ramifications, essentially putting himself in a position where he has to raid the U.S. Treasury in order to avoid being forced by a Democratic majority to face responsibility for his actions. How fucked up is that? And how is it possible that we aren’t in the street right now?

OK, with that, I bid you good night.

Oh, before I go, there’s one more thing that I wanted to share… Probably the best Donald Trump quote of the entire summer. I just couldn’t allow myself to drift off to sleep without sharing it first. I think it speaks volumes as to just how far through the looking glass we’ve now traveled.

Will Trump also bail out the employees of Whirlpool here in Michigan?

“Whirlpool shares plunged 14.5% today, the U.S. company’s worst day since October 1987, as tariffs wreak havoc with costs and suppliers.”

“Global steel cost has risen substantially and, particularly in the U.S., they have reached unexplainable levels.”

“Real average hourly compensation actually fell in the first quarter after the tax reform was passed…Official data for the second quarter isn’t available yet, but private data isn’t looking encouraging. PayScale’s index of real wages shows a dramatic deterioration in the period:Since the tax cuts passed, companies have been using buybacks to return record amounts of cash to shareholders — more than $700 billion in the first two quarters. That naturally raises the possibility that companies don’t have good projects to invest in. If companies pass their tax windfall on to shareholders, those investors can choose to react by increasing consumption — meaning more of society’s resources go to the wealthy.”

Remember this is going to hurt the red states the most and they all deserve it for voting for Trump (or as in Michigan’s case, having enough Jill Stein voters to affect the outcome in Trump’s favor). This is going to really hurt people in Michigan. The steel tariffs already are. Now he is talking about tariffs on foreign cars *and* foreign car parts. (for those who don’t know, the most “American” car has around 1/3 foreign parts).

And those farm subsidies aren’t really going to help much. What happens when China finds an alternate source for their soybeans? What happens when Mexico starts buying their beans from somewhere else? Will they come back all of a sudden if the tariffs end? Those subsidies will in no way make up for the damage he is doing to that market.

In the Wizard of Oz book, anyone inside of the Emerald City was required to wear green tinted glasses. We wear the tinted techincolor glasses willingly.

    From wikipedia:

“In the first book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), the walls are green, but the city itself is not. However, when they enter, everyone in the Emerald City is made to wear green-tinted eyeglasses; this is explained as an effort to protect their eyes from the “brightness and glory” of the city, but in effect makes everything appear green when it is, in fact, “no more green than any other city”. This is yet another “humbug” created by the Wizard.”

JCP2. I have never followed your reasoning on this one.

    1) Personal attacks in the sense of fallacious reasoning are not only possible with anonymity, anonymity can facilitate the use and exploitation of that type of fallacious reasoning.

    2) You are assuming, because someone is “anonymous” to you, so to speak, that same person is also “anonymous” to others.

    3)Define “person”.

    4) The term “anonymous” indicates “without name”. It is an obvious misnomer to say some poster with a name is “without name”.

Flakey Flakes never addresses the issues, he is more concerned with how people refer to him than in the greater issues that his indifference to how our Democracy is being threatened by a President who ran on a platform of white supremacy and how tells us that he is the sole authority on “reality.”

Could if be that the Flakey Flakes is too afraid to face the fact that he willingly white supremacists? That he himself might have to face the possibility that he himself holds white supremacist ideals? Or that he might be outed for it? Or that he might simply think it doesn’t affect him directly so… who cares.

Very hard to tell what his intentions are, but I’m thinking all of the above.

We have a 2 party system. A bad and notable public person, who votes, is often going to endorse the person he likes better. Can you tell me what exactly hinges upon the David Duke endorsement of Trump in your mind? If Richard Spencer ran against Trump and received Duke’s endorsement over Trump does that change how we should think of Trump? Spencer?

If David Duke was part of the mm.com community I would probably spend most of my time asking him for his reasons for saying stupid shit; rather than spending time judging Mark for how it reflects on him that David Duke comments and “supports” the existence of his blog. I do not judge Mark when you endorses some of Mark’s ideas. Lucky Pierre,

See my response about Duke’s endorsement.

See my question to IL asking: What exactly hinges, in his mind, on the Duke endorsement of Trump, and whether or not we should/would think of Trump differently if there was a candidate running against Trump (like Spencer) who white supremacists preferred to vote for.

I think it is safe to say, White Supemasists tend to strongly hold onto a variety of conservative views they deem important to them, so they are likely to vote conservative. “Maybe they are just conservative” was a response I was given, by a mm.com regular, when asked why so many Hispanics voted for Trump. The more to the point questions are: Does trump lend support in words and policy to the white supremacists? What examples in the Trump platform show that Trump ran on a white supremacist platform.

The very odd thing is, and you would know it if you followed this conversation back a few weeks, is, I am curious about these questions. I offered to compile a list of such information, with IL’s help, and IL reacted like I murdered his pet hamster while he was taking nap-time.

    Why?

Because THE FACTS are not strong with this one, Luke-y.

Compiling a list of dog whistles will not be useful. I do not understand what the Flakey Flakes aims to achieve aside from using it to discredit the idea that Donald Trump ran on a platform of white supremacy and actively courted voters with racist sensibilities.

Probably the Flakey Flakes does not take racism seriously.

“whether or not we should/would think of Trump differently if there was a candidate running against Trump (like Spencer) who white supremacists preferred to vote for.”

If Spencer had run so what? Would that have changed the nature of Trump’s racist campaign? I say not. He found that talking about Mexican rapists and cleaning up “inner cities” worked well with a rural racist base, just as Reagan found that kicking off his campaign in Philadelphia, MS worked with Southern voters.

Flakey Flakes would just offer that it was mere coincidence that Reagan did that because Flakey Flakes has no problem with racism in politics, because white male power and his onion skin empty shell.

Lee Atwater’s strategy was quite smart. Bigots can used coded language to be able to deny culpability in pushing for racist policies. It has influenced the way that the entire Republican Party has done politics for decades following.

The Flakey Flakes is either too dumb to realize this, is simply following a tried and true conservative strategy or has internalized the coded language so much that he actually believes that there are no hidden meanings when Donald Trump say “inner cities.”

    Hard to tell which.

“If Spencer had run so what? Would that have changed the nature of Trump’s racist campaign?”

    I agree, Iron Lung.

The apt questions, for our discussion, are those questions that give us insight into the actual nature of the Trump campaign, as you now just said. Which is why I asked you what “hinges” on the Duke endorsement.

Is it not strange you are now saying the answers to your own questions do not matter; and yet you not only asked the meaningless questions; but you argued that a failure to answer those same meaningless questions (by your own admission) was, in your view, a piece of evidence that I hold some horribly aweful political views.

Do you see how one might not find your lines of reasoning super duper solid?

Given we both agree that the actual nature of Trump’s campaign is the sought after insight. Is it not odd that when I offer to compile a list of examples, with your help, that might shed light on the nature of Trump’s campaign you say such a “list of dog whistles will not be useful” and go on to further express that you beleive I would actually use a list of examples, of your choosing, that exemplify the darker sides of the Trump campaign to discredit the claims you have made about the nature of the Trump campaign.

Your reasoning falls short of the standards required to even be called “circular reasoning”.

  98. Iron Lung
    Posted July 26, 2018 at 11:54 am | Permalink

“I hold some horribly aweful political views.”

Why would I come up with such an inane list when others have already done it? You know what would be on such a list already.

Do you want a link to a list? It will, of course, come from a “biased” source…. so what would be the point?

What you want to do is discredit each one by one as “not being ground in facts” when the fact is that dog whistles have been used in right wing politics for decades. Trump was actually clearer than most, which was a calculated attempt to gain support from a racist base and it worked.

It is astounding that you deny this but then you are still “waiting for the facts.”

What is horrid about you is that you don’t admit how you and people like you enable racism in this country. You may not consider yourself a racist but you clearly have no problem with racism in campaign politics outside of a brief mention of the “darker sides of the Trump campaign” as if were just an accident or worthy of disregard. From here, that’s what won him the seat.

So, if you voted for Mr. Trump, you enabled racists in gaining power in this country. People who voted for Trump voted for white supremacy whether that was their intention or not. In practice, a vote for Trump was a vote for white supremacy.

Clearly, Americans value a tax break more than this despise racism.

I have no idea whether Flakey Flakes “holds horrible political views.” That isn’t the point. Honestly, it appears he has no political views (always “waiting for the facts”)

The point is that Flakey Flakes has no problem in enabling the people who do have horrible political views and is spineless in confronting those who do.

In that record, Flakey Flakes is like a lot of Americans, and that”s what I find so distasteful.

It is unbelievable that Flakey Flakes has yet to understand that.

“What is your opinion why Trump is so popular with white supremacists?”

LP, this is what Ronald Reagan Jr thinks (more broadly about Trump’s base):

“They really aren’t in touch with reality. The most important thing to them [is that Trump] seems to hate the same people that they hate,” Ron Reagan told Chris Matthews on MSNBC’s “Hardball” on Thursday. “That’s the real Trump derangement syndrome.”

I think there’s a lot to that explanation. Prime example: why is “Hillary Clinton!” the answer to criticism of Trump? But good luck getting a Trump supporter to self reflect on that.

FF, I have to agree with IL that it’s disingenuous to ask him for evidence that Trump panders to white supremacists. You listen to Trump’s own words and read his tweets? They don’t require analysis. Aren’t you the guy who scoured 8 hours of amateur video of Charlottesville, and insisted everyone here do so too, to “prove” that both sides were at fault? If you’re still “waiting for the facts” on Trump there’s no point to what you ask of IL.

Anyway, SH, I am being “Disingenuous” toward what end do you think?

I thought it would be good for IL to make his reasons explicit. I didn’t demand reasons, I asked. When he was silent I tried to assemble a list of reasons and even offered some Trump campaign quotes, I gathered from the Internet, in an attempt to gain feedback from IL regarding his approval /disapproval; but IL said he did not want to even offer his opinion on whether or not the examples I gave him were good examples of evidence. He further said, if he were to reveal his reasons for his truth claim,I would just use his reasons to discredit his truth claim.

I thought we used reasons to attempt to give explicit validity to our truth claims. If a “reason” discredits a specific truth claim then it never was a reason for that truth claim and why should anyone care? I am very open to hearing IL’s reasons. That is why I asked you:” disingenuous toward what end”?

    “Neutrality (aka moral relativism)”

Moral relativism has a neutral component. However, not even in a galaxy far far away does “neutrality” imply “moral relativism”.

FF— Please note that I said “[your] idea of neutrality (aka moral relativism).” I don’t think they are the same thing. It seems to me that what you position as neutrality is moral relativism however. Glad to know you see a difference. Rather than get into a discussion where terms are defined differently between the parties, please tell me what you see as the distinction, and how you would frame your position.

As for your inference that I’m an idiot (however civil your tone), I’m prepared to accept that characterization on your behalf. What’s more idiotic (and human) than jumping to a conclusion that confirms ones narrative based on a poor reading of someone else’s point?

  115. Frosted Flakes
    Posted July 28, 2018 at 7:12 pm | Permalink

No Jean. I don’t think you are an idiot. Nor was I trying to imply you are an idiot. Your “analogies” here strike me as so dumb that they are not even analogies. I might even say your “analogies” have a cleverly deceitful intent but that bit of cleverness does not an analogy make. The question was not ‘what is Jean’? The question was: ‘What are they’?” It was/is a real question. Analogies are great because the give us an additional avenue toward the Truth. Did your “analogies” do that? If your opinion is ‘yes’, then let us see your evidence. Because I believe we all understand the implication when, via the outward appearance of the empty form of an analogy, you claimed that my position is potentially: 1) as immoral as a country that wouId house money for Hitler that was stolen from the people he murdered; and/or 2) as weak as a country that would make concessions to Hitler in the selfish hopes that Hitler would not invade them.

So, given we all probably understand what the complicit-Nazi-collaborator side of your analogy means. The question really is: Where, on mm.com, has my political/philosophical positions been analogous with those immoral/ amoral/ self-interested positions of those nations you offered up and claimed to be grounded loosely in moral relativism?

My use of term “neutral” , when speaking to SH, was intended to the convey the impartial approach I took toward gathering video evidence around very specific c-ville events, which members of the mm.com, were making truth claims about. Do you find something wrong with gathering evidence in an impartial way or do you reject the idea that I was gathering evidence impartially? I ask because there is a pretty large gap between 1) gathering evidence in a bias way (if that is what you think I am guilty of) and 2) being like someone who is passively-indirectly-complicit of genocide aided by their own convenient moral relativism. I don’t even need you to bridge the huge fucking gap. Can you even give your evidence of #1, please?

FF– I see many patterns in human behavior, some (many) of which produce human horrors. Most of the time those same behaviors are benign. When a society is under the kind of stress we are under today, with Trump as President as evidence, then those behaviors take on a different color, because the context makes them more risky.

Normally, your ‘neutrality’ would not bother me one bit. But I don’t believe that neutrality with regards to Trump is reasonable. I actually think I feel more empathy for his misguided supporters than those who believe he is so insignificant a force as to think neutrality is a reasonable response and one which will produce a more civil society.

I dont think you are a nazi. I think, as IL stated, that in the context of the run up to WW2 and the Holocaust, you would have likely been neutral and complicit. Many many many people were. There is absolutely nothing exceptional about your position. Becoming complicit in horror is just a risk of it. That risk is elevated in these times.

I also dont think you are a journalist, or meet journalistic standards of objectivity. I have pointed out at least a dozen times the double standards you apply in your supposedly neutral, fact based approach. You position yourself as neutral and fact based to mask your apparent bias. Your ‘neutrality’ relies on amorality in that it ignores bias of all kinds, especially your own. It’s that simple.

iRobert–the double standard to which I was referring was that FF gives HW and EOS batshit crazy counter factual statements a pass, while nit picking at those coming form the left. This is his idea of neutrality. He does it to men and women. It has nothing to do with gender.

FF demands facts to support opinions, which is reasonable and are often provided. But then insists that the opinions must be facts themselves, which quite obviously they are not, or they are wrong. He even insists that analogies be facts or be wrong. It’s logical fallacy masking as reason. But only applied to the left. It makes my brain hurt.

FF–“What you are seeing” is inherently biased by your own perspective. Your perspective is not the same thing as fact. Your perspective, as anyone’s, distorts facts.

    @Jean,

You are so clueless, that what you call my bat shit crazy ideas are the actual truth. If I ever wrote something that wasn’t true, I’m sure FF would call me out on it.

Jean, nothing you say pans out. It’s all wrong and I show you why with reasoning you don’t have an answer to. How can you of all people say I am crazy? You are every extreme thing you rail against: bigoted, racist, sexist, eugenicist. All things which I am very far from. Your entire “argument” consists of circular logic: Trump is supported by racists therefore Trump is racist therefore Trump supporters are racist confirming Trump is a racist. Great stuff there.

FF, In your words,“Disingenuous” toward what end? I don’t know, I can’t read your mind, but for some reason you act like you can’t detect that Trump openly encourages racists. I use the word disingenuous because it doesn’t seem to me like you’re naive. I assume you listen to Trump’s own words and read his own tweets.

And so it is with Charlottesville. Your reaction puzzled me. Something motivated you to pore over hours of amateur video of a single POV of a white supremacist rally. What was so compelling? What was so important for you to prove or disprove? Did something outrage you? You don’t have to answer here, I’m just asking you to self reflect for your own benefit. In return, I will self reflect on what compels me to respond to futile “discourse” in the comments of this blog.

HW, I’m sure my response is futile, because I perceive you really are lost in your faith in Trump. God bless you and help you.

“Tell me where are all these “emboldened” white supremacists now that we are well into the Trump era?”

Naturally, they are marching against Trump because he’s bragging about Black and Hispanic employment rates.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/how-white-supremacists-split-a-quiet-rust-belt-town/2018/07/28

    An excerpt:

The traffic sign that greets visitors on the south side of Ulysses, a tiny town in rural far north-central Pennsylvania, is suitably quaint — a silhouette of a horse-drawn cart reminding drivers that the Amish use the roads, too. But on the north side of town, along the main thoroughfare, is a far different display: a home dedicated to Adolf Hitler, where star-spangled banners and Nazi flags flutter side by side and wooden swastikas stand on poles.

White supremacy has had a continuous presence in Ulysses and surrounding Potter County since the Ku Klux Klan arrived a century ago, giving the town — with a population today of about 650 — improbable national significance. In the mid-2000s, it hosted the World Aryan Congress, a gathering of neo-Nazis, skinheads and Klan members.

This year, after a sting operation, federal prosecutors charged six members of an Aryan Strike Force cell with weapons and drug offenses, contending that they had plotted a suicide attack at an anti-racism protest. A terminally ill member was willing to hide a bomb in his oxygen tank and blow himself up, prosecutors said. The group had met and conducted weapons training in Ulysses.

Neo-Nazis and their opponents here say that white extremists have grown more confident — and confrontational — since the rise of Donald Trump. Two months before the 2016 presidential election, the KKK established a “24 hour Klan Line” and sent goody bags containing lollipops and fliers to hundreds of homes. “You can sleep tonight knowing the Klan is awake,” the message read. A regional newspaper ran Klan advertisements saying, “God bless the KKK.”

Local police said the group had not openly recruited in years.

Two weeks later, the area’s two neo-Nazi groups, the National Socialist Movement (NSM) and Aryan Strike Force, held a “white unity meeting” in Ulysses to discuss their response to Trump and plan joint action. One organizer would not say when the groups had last met, simply commenting: “It’s just a good time.”

Potter County is staunchly Republican and has voted Democratic once since 1888; Trump received 80 percent of the vote, tying with Herbert Hoover for the highest percentage won.

“I can tell you with certainty that since November 2016, activity has doubled, whether it’s feet on the street or money orders or people helping out,” said Daniel Burnside, 43, a woodcarver who owns the Nazi-themed home and directs the state chapter of the National Socialist Movement, a far-right group that was founded in Detroit in the mid-1970s. It has a presence in many states, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks extremist groups, and the NSM was among the groups taking part in the violent August 2017 rally in defense of Confederate statues in Charlottesville.

“We have meetings every 30 days,” he said. “ There’s more collaboration.”

Burnside, who declined to say how many local residents were involved in his group, was born in Ulysses and raised there by a grandfather who he said was a Nazi sympathizer who fought in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. Burnside said his beloved grandfather drank himself to death because of the war’s impact on him.

The younger Burnside said he joined the NSM four years ago but has long harbored anti-Semitic views and is a practicing Odinist — the pagan religion Odinism is popular among some neo-Nazis. Burnside does not see Trump as a leader of the NSM cause but as a politician who amplified long-standing white-nationalist views at the right time.

“Personally, I don’t know about Trump,” he said. “You won’t necessarily see MAGA hats at an NSM meeting. We’re anti-Semitic. Something’s off about Trump with the Jews. That said, we’re strategically aligned. When Trump says something that aligns with us — close the borders, build the wall, look after your own — that’s good: We’ve been saying this for 25 years, but he has made it mainstream.”

“We’re still a white nation, and I respect that he supports that,” Burnside added. “He’s also highlighted social problems. The kids who go to bed hungry, people who can’t pay their bills, the damage being done to society.”

Joe Leschner, 38, a white restaurant manager, fled the county this year because of what he said was abuse aimed at him and his wife, Sashena, who is black, after Trump’s election.

After he discovered a KKK leaflet outside their home, Leschner organized an anti-racism gathering in Ulysses. “And these guys drove by us and gave the gun signal, like they’re going to shoot us,” he said.

One of those who Leschner said made a pistol gesture had previously been jailed for 10 years for an aggravated assault on a black man. This year he was convicted of possession of firearms he was not legally allowed to own and intent to sell drugs.

Photographs of the Leschners were circulated on VK, a Russian-run social media site, with users posting death threats, he said.

“A guy came up to us in a restaurant and said, ‘You have got to be kidding me.’ I wanted to say something, but just couldn’t. This was where I grew up, at the restaurant where I got my first job. My wife was almost in tears,” he recalled.

“We had to leave,” said Leschner, who now runs a restaurant in Frederick, Md. “Most people aren’t racist, but there are enough that are and enough who let it happen.”

Are you sure you don’t view FF as impartial and credible because he hasn’t called you out on your batshit crazy ideas? Hypothetically, of course. I’m not actually saying you’re batshit crazy (but would you view me as impartial and credible if I said you were)?

    SH,

I think it would be great to assemble a list of best examples we have that Trump ran on a white supremacy platform. I still do. I am not a member of any social media whatsoever, so I have probably read less tweets than you think. I have looked at some list from websites but I have not found them very convincing against Trump mainly because there was a lot of paraphrasing going on….I thought it would be important for IL and I to build the list together because he and Jean had already accused me of being biased in favor of Trump.

Charlottesville was a disaster. I feel proud of my efforts collecting info primarily off the “Duerst is the Worst” video. It does not seem like it would be hard but there were some 5 second interactions that took me 30-40 minutes to figure the ordering of physical attacks and responses by going frame by frame. It wasn’t like I was cherry picking events either. I was following the truth claims made by mm.com about specific interactions and then I was investigating those truth claims. I invite anyone who is willing to invest an hour of their time to follow the Charlottesville thread and look at the video very closely following my instructions and let us know what you see. Why the effort? I want to know the truth. End of story.
