If war with Iran is what it’s going to take to keep the greatest President in American history out of prison, I’m OK with that

With Donald Trump’s Helsinki treason summit fresh in everyone’s mind, Paul Manafort’s trial set to begin in about a week, the promise of incriminating audio tapes, and the mid-term election just a little over three months away, our President seems to be thrusting himself headlong into desperation mode. Over the past 24 hours alone, he has threatened war with Iran, reverted to once again calling Russian election interference a “hoax”, lied about the FISA warrant against Carter Page, and announced that he my seek to revoke the security clearances of lifetime intelligence community officials like John Brennan who dare to question his cozy relationship with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Here, if you’ve yet to see it, is Trump’s tweet promising war with Iran. [A big, heartfelt “thank you,” by the way, to all of you pure liberals out there who refused to vote for Secretary Clinton because you bought the laughably stupid “Hillary’s a war monger” narrative that was being peddled by Russian bots and the New York Times.]

And, yes, if you’re thinking that Donald Trump might just be the kind of guy who, if it meant increasing his odds of avoiding impeachment and prosecution, might consider wagging us into war, you’re not alone. A lot of us are thinking that he’s the kind of guy to do such a thing. I mean, it’s clearly something that he’s thought about. Back in the 2011, as you may recall, he even accused President Obama of doing it, saying in a tweet that his predecessor would start a war with Iran “in order to get elected” to a second term… And we all know that Donald Trump has a long history of accusing others of doing things that he then goes on to do himself.

It really does feel like the madness is purposefully being ramped up in hopes of preemptively counteracting something Donald Trump knows to be on the horizon, like the release of the above-mentioned audio recordings, or the arrest of his close associate Roger Stone, who many think may be the next one swept up in Robert Mueller’s magnificent net of justice.

And so we wait as the craziness and chaos builds to a fever pitch, with our President throwing out absolutely anything and everything that he can, hoping to stir up enough dirt to obscure what’s actually going on… claiming once again, for instance, that the FBI investigation began with the Steele dossier, when we all know for a fact that it actually began when federal authorities were informed by an Australian diplomat that Trump policy advisor George Papadopoulos had been drunkenly talking in a London bar about stolen Clinton campaign emails that he and the Trump-Pence 2016 team were expecting to receive from the Russians.

Oh, and, for what it’s worth, Vladamir Putin has also started pitching in to help Trump out, telling Fox News that his government has never interfered with the internal affairs of the United States. [You know, when I first heard Trump say about Putin, “He said he didn’t meddle… and I believe,” I scoffed. But he really is persuasive, though, isn’t he?]

So, yeah, we’re all fucked. Donald Trump isn’t going to go quietly into the night like Richard Nixon. He’s going to keep fighting to the bitter end, without any concern for the long term damage being done to our nation. If he has to, he will take us to war to avoid facing the consequences of his actions. Let this be a lesson to future generations not to elect sociopaths.

Recent poll of Republicans shows an increasing favorability rating for Putin! What kinda fucking dumbass gives Putin a favorable rating? One who wants to turn America into a repressive dictatorship. Millions of our fellows are hopelessly wayward and will destroy America if allowed. Prepare yourself materially and mentally to stop them at any cost.

Putin is a tough guy who doesn’t take any shit. The Republican base eats that shit up. It takes their “strong father” fetish and puts it on meth.

John Brown– If Sanders were president and he became chummy with Putin, I have no doubt that most Dems would quickly embrace Russia. Much of the left already does. Cult of personality.

Someone will say there’s a difference, but, no, there’s no difference. The mechanisms that lead the madness of crowds are all the same. Anything else is rationalization.

This is clearly some 17th level delusional…errr illusionist shit, that we are just too weak and ill-informed to understand. Trump is a secret peacenik super hero. All wars will end, prosperity will reign throughout the (USA) land, and the pedophile, lizard hand, adrenochrome-huffing rings of high-level corruption will be disbanded and jailed. All hail the great leader.

Given how willing Democrats were to eviscerate Barack Obama over drone strikes, their calls to stay out of Syria and their lack of substantive cooperation during the creation of the ACA (“sellout!”), I take serious issue with Mr. Henry’s theory that Democrats would have gotten on board with Sanders, had been elected POTUS and pandered to Vladimir Putin.

Democrats are much more willing to call our their leaders than Republicans.

Remember during the campaign in 2008, Democrats were emphatic in their support for Barack Obama, but once elected, the tone changed quickly.

There are lots of conservative Russian Orthodox here in the USA who love Putin. They see him as a liberator from the Russian regime which oppressed the church. And in a way he is. He has made a big show of restoring the church in Russia and they love him for that. It reminds me of how many Chaldeans in Detroit loved Saddam Hussein and why so many rural white Americans love Donald Trump. There were probably a lot of Germans who loved Hitler for similar reasons. If your group is getting privileged it can be easy to overlook the oppression of others.

Lynne, agreed. We have all the parallels with our evangelicals and white nationalists. We even have Bikers for Trump which can be weaponized just like Putin’s Night Wolves. And if anyone thinks they’ll stand down after reading a pithy essay on Markmaynard you are wrong.

    Trump regarding the Cohen tapes:

“Inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyer’s office (early in the morning) – almost unheard of. Even more inconceivable that a lawyer would tape a client – totally unheard of & perhaps illegal. The good news is that your favorite President did nothing wrong!”

Now Trump is saying that he DOES think the Russians will interfere in the coming election, but interfere AGAINST him.

“I’m very concerned that Russia will be fighting very hard to have an impact on the upcoming Election. Based on the fact that no President has been tougher on Russia than me, they will be pushing very hard for the Democrats. They definitely don’t want Trump!”

    M, IL,
His assertion of Putin being for Dems could certainly provide him an explanation for the drubbing the GOP is going to take! How it gets weaponized to preserve his treasonous ass from impeachment is going to get fairly more convoluted, but he is the amazing plastic man. And he has Dunning-Kruger down to a science apparently. The ultimate illegitimate candidate foreshadows illegitimacy for his rebuke – of course.

You are making things up again, IL.

Think about it, when have I ever tried to downplay the possibility of Trump/ Russian collusion. I AM interested how the Mueller investigation plays out. I have only claimed to NOT know how the Mueller investigation will unfold and have pretty much refused to offer any theory one way or the other regarding the investigation.

Question for you Iron Lung: When you have early onset dementia is it like a million times easier to just make stuff up rather than try to try to actually remember anything someone else has said?

You have a bigot brain, IL, but I am willing to entertain the possibility that there is an underlying cause.

It has ben well established that the Mr. Flakes only deals in facts. That is, we can only rely on the literal meaning of what one says and not the implication or the way in which meaning is assigned relative to the speaker and the listener.

Yet, despite the denials of Mr. Trump, here we see the Flakey Flakes offering that perhaps the Trump campaign did collude with Russian operatives to influence the 2016 election.

Evolution? Or maybe just a good day?

Either way, he still believes that Mr. Trump did not run on a platform of white supremacy, because well, white male power and all.

An Alabama organization designated as a white supremacist hate group by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is launching a Russian-language page calling on Russia and the American South to become allies.

A letter posted to the League of the South’s website first reported by AL.com spoke of natural similarities between Russian culture and the conservative southerners.

“As fellow Whites of northern European extraction, we come from the same general gene pool. As inheritors of the European cultural tradition, we share similar values, customs, and ways of life. And as Christians, we worship the same Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and our common faith binds us as brothers and sisters,” the group’s leader Michael Hill wrote.”

citations needed did a two part episode recently about russiagate. it was a really good perspective, imo. they accept the broad narrative that russia meddled in the 16 election, but take a dive into where this is headed and how this narrative impacts the nascent left in the US. In part 2 they interviewed anoa changa who discusses how russiagate has impacted her work as a black activist. One of the things she talks about is appearing on RT and how that was used to smear her as ‘russia-adjacent’ or some such. The use of language when discussing this russia shit is truly fascinating and frustrating.
    here’s part 1:

    here’s part 2:

there’s some good points raised about russiagate in this article as well. again the author accepts the broad narrative wrt russian interference but addresses the impact of how this is being discussed and where it may lead:

JH, you are wildly off on your asessment of leftwing attitudes towards Putin. The new left, not the HRC center, are totally committed to social justice. How’s Putin’s record on social justice? Oligarchs and outragous income inequality, religious descrimination, LGBT violence, fraud elections, racial discrimination, human trafficking, and general mobster rule. I’m sure I’m missing plenty of other stuff abhorrent to the left.

On a related note Bernie endorsed Abdul for Governor today! Vote Abdul, I can personally guarantee he would take zero shit from Putin.
