Ever feel like drowning America in the bathtub? Here’s the plan.

As hard as it might be to believe, the above image comes from an actual report issued by White House. The report, titled Delivering Government
Solutions in the 21st Century
, lays out the Trump administration’s aggressive plan for reorganizing (a.k.a. shrinking) the United States government.

[Can you imagine what would have happened if the Obama White House had issued a report quoting a fictional American… let’s call her like Michelle from Delaware… arguing, “Let Obama do what he wants,” or “Let Obama govern like a community organizer”?]

As for what’s in this report, it’s essentially the wish list of the Republican right, as so honestly articulated back at the turn of the century by “small government” jihadist Grover Norquist, the founder and president of the Americans for Tax Reform. “I don’t want to abolish government,” Norquist stated in a May 25, 2001 interview with NPR’s Morning Edition. “I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.” And that’s essentially what Trump and his budget director, Mick Mulvaney, have presented in this plan, which was clearly written with the input of wealthy Republican donors like Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers. It’s a detailed roadmap showing how, through the drastic consolidation federal departments, the dramatic rollback of regulation, and the elimination of social safety net programs, the U.S. government can be weakened to the point that, when held below the surface of the water, it can no longer fight back.

When asked about the plan late last week by reporters, Donald Trump laughed, saying that it was “extraordinarily boring,” the suggestion being that our time might be better spent elsewhere. And, if you read it, you can see why he’d rather that people talk about anything else. It’s a plan that would, quite literally, lead to the deaths of American citizens. And I say that without hyperbole.

Here, to give you some sense of what you’ll find within the plan, are a series of tweets from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Laurie Garrett.

While it may be unlikely that a bill like this would make it through Congress, we need to take notice, as this is clearly their plan for the future. This, assuming things continue to go their way, is where the Republicans want to take America. So don’t be distracted by the chaos. Don’t spend too much time fretting over the fact that Donald Trump is hanging out with Corey “Womp Womp” Lewandowski just a few days after the latter mocked a 10-year-old illegal immigrant with Down syndrome who had been separated from her mother at the border, or pissed that Stephen Miller, the White House author of the child separation policy, is out there in the world, attempting to eat Mexican food. None of it is real. These are all just attempts on the part of the administration to get us talking about anything other than their judicial appointments, their increasingly cruel and racist policies, and these “extraordinarily boring” government restructuring plans that they’s started floating. This is always been their endgame, and now, with the Trump administration headed toward impeachment, they intend to give it their best shot.

It’s too bad we don’t have much of a real press anymore. We could have really used them right now.

It would also be kinda nice if everyone wasn’t so easily distracted by absurd circus sideshows. They might notice some of the mountains of shit that is going down right now.

    Well, it’s nice to dream.

I have 25 years of service in the US govt. Prior to the overt fascist takeover the Govt was on a serious downward spiral already. Since W Bush especially there has been what appears to be intentional starving of the workforce talent pool by incredibly inefficient human resource group performance. On top of that the saturation of low level admin jobs with a high percentage of PTSD jar heads through “veterans preference” hirings is crippling organizational function. I thank them for their service, but they can really FUBAR civilian organizations by bringing military culture into civilian/academic/scientific settings.

We’ve already created a Federal Govt Bureaucracy better suited to conducting never ending war than actually delivering services and better quality of life to its citizens. The right has a head start at sabotaging the organizational performance, then using poor performance to justify cuts. Wash, rinse, repeat but on steroids now.

It’s a competing vision of how a family should function. On the one hand, we have a stern and unyielding father, who shows his affection only to his offspring that meet his standards of performance. On the other hand, we have a mother who cares for her children and supports them through all their faults. At this point, the father is almost an absentee parent, coming back for money after he’s spent it on some wild impulsive spree, while the mother is trying not only to take care of her own children, but also worried about her neighbors children, since those other parents are having a tough time themselves.

Republicans are always saying they want to shrink government, but then never do. Government always grows bigger under their control, in terms of spending and “waste.” What they shrink are regulatory agencies and social programs. But those cuts always amount to less than their increases in corporate welfare. When they say they’ve shrunk government, they’re always careful to word it so the average moron doesn’t catch that it’s only those aspects that benefit the middle and lower classes which have been cut. I suspect they will no longer be bothering to cleverly word anything, now that bold-face lying is the norm, and that there is no longer a real press nor intelligent/informed public who’d hold them accountable.

So I’m starting to believe that this whole separating kids from their parents things was a calculated move to create outrage to force the rescinding the FLORES agreement, thus allowing the long term detention of children with their families– Similarly the coat etc were likely covers for this drastic action. Trump himself called it boring, which either means someone else wrote it and he has no interest (along IL’s lines of thinking) or that he doesn’t want us to be paying attention to it, or at least his base. I think we are dealing with master trolls here, and that there really is no length to which they won’t go to meet their ends. There is always at least one covert intention behind every action. And we have to be sleuths to figure that out, which means we have to suppress our outrage enough to be able to see clearly.

While this is stuff the GOP have always done, they haven’t done it all at once. It’s the kind of thing they pledge to do and then dont because they find out these departments do important things. And once the impact hits the regular population in a year or more, they’ll be held accountable. But Trump has some true believers re both white nationalism and smaller government (outside of enforcement). It makes sense to me that after shrinking the state department of diplomatic capacity and moving to ‘hard strength’ abroad, we would do the same domestically.

All of this of course will accrue more power to the executive branch. Remember the bureaucrats stood up to Trump effectively in the first year. Then they lost their jobs.

Smaller government does not mean the dispersal of power into the private sector, it means the concentration of real decisive power into the hands of fewer and fewer people with less and less input. And it fold in a profit motive, which I’m not opposed to in all cases, but am very much suspicious of at best when it comes to delivering social services and health care.

To shrink government and shrink regulations is a toxic combo. And yes, this bit is text book old school GOP.

We all get what we vote for don’t we? I mean collectively of course. I know/hope it is just a temporary bad mood but right now, I have pretty much decided that if there isn’t a huge turnout at the midterms, I am going to stop trying to change the government and start working out how I and my family can work things in order to be in the small group who benefits from these policies. If people keep voting for these policies, as they have since Reagan, despite the clear evidence that they are responsible for their pain, then fuck their racist asses.

If you do a map of government after this action, you would see the shrinking of any kind of service oriented, policy development part of government and a massive growth in enforcement capacity, most of which is accountable to the Justice Department and the Executive branch. The FBI and CIA have dodged Trump’s constraints on their independent strength, which really pisses Trump off.

The one thing I take some consolation in is that the Trump administration, so far, has been obeying court orders, likely on lawyer advice. When they no longer do that, or the courts start to do their bidding, we are sunk.

What fascinates me is that so many Trump supporters after complaining for years about Obama’s supposed over reach (not all of which I disagree with) will simply allow their guy to concentrate his own power in such extreme manner without any comment.

I cant say most of the left wouldn’t do the same if it was their guy implementing their agenda.

It is true that Trump and co, just as they figured out how to gothic elected short 3 million in the popular vote, have managed to figure out how to implement his agenda without much cooperation from Congress. It’s autocratic a/f, but his supporters dont care. It’s what they wanted. And yes, I think much of the left would be cheering the same kind of move to autocracy if it got them UBI and single payer.

Let’s see how happy Trump supporters are in a few years. In the meantime, I think the left better focus on the midterms. His people are happy now and the economy is good and they will be going to the polls to support him. We have to get strategic instead of emotional. They have it all over us there.

I smell Bannon all over this. I’m wondering how he managed to win by leaving the WH. But it seems he finally has the White House’s ear. This is his plan, as laid out on that white board a year ago. And he’s the only one in the inner circle ( other than KAC– whose husband has been gunning for Trump), with enough strategic smarts and clear-eyed cultural read to pull this off.

    Yep Bannon and his ‘guys’.

“Our guys have been in there since the start, grinding it out, and basically no one is noticing it except the smart liberals like Rachel Maddow,” said Stephen K. Bannon, the president’s former adviser, who believes the attack on social programs will be one of Mr. Trump’s most enduring policy achievements.

“It is one of the reasons Trump is at like 97 percent with the base. This is what the base wants,” he said. Referring to the right-wing conspiracy theorist who hosts a popular radio show and the progressive consumer activists allied with Ralph Nader, who became a force in Democratic politics in the 1970s, he added: “Trust me, it’s not Alex Jones that’s driving things. It’s these guys — they are our version of ‘Nader’s Raiders.’”

Philip G. Alston, a New York University professor and the United Nations special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, agreed with Mr. Bannon’s assessment. “My sense is they are making very considerable progress, even though no one is paying much attention,” he said.

But Mr. Alston, author of a recent study on endemic poverty in American cities and the rural South, has a different view of what Mr. Trump’s aides are trying to do. “There is a contempt for the poor that seems to permeate the president’s inner circle that seems very worrying,” he said. “It’s done under the banner of providing opportunity and seeking long-term solutions but it all seems designed to increase misery.”

The president himself is deeply uninterested in the details of policy and can identify only a handful of domestic policy aides, including Mr. Mulvaney, by name, according to current and former staff members. His policy operation during the 2016 campaign was skeletal.

Something I find interesring is how one can vote for a politician who ran on a platform of racism, how one can actively support policies which are racist, spread propaganda for said racist politician and policies and still deny being a racist.

It matters not what one believes onesself to be, what one does is important.

So no, i dont find it interesting at all. Tearfully claiming “I’m not racist” is standard fare for most of the right wing United States.

“Eleven deaths occurred in Colorado, while 10 took place in California. In both states, at least one child died where butane hash oil (BHO) labs operated, and numerous children were injured in BHO fires. The two most recent deaths in Colorado occurred last summer when a mother followed a cult leader to a marijuana farm. No one knows how long the two girls had been dead when they were discovered locked in a car covered in tarp last September. They were starved to death. An unusual death in California occurred when a babysitter went to her cousin’s car to smoke pot, leaving a 16-month-old boy inside. The toddler eventually came outside and the visiting car ran over him.

Many ER treatments followed the accidental ingestion of marijuana candies and cookies. A medical journal reported last year that an 11-month-old baby suffered from an enlarged heart muscle and couldn’t be revived a few days after ingesting marijuana in Colorado. However, it’s usually not edibles that kill children, but other acts of neglect and violent behavior.

In Florida, three children drowned when parents or babysitters smoked pot and forgot about them. At least 10 deaths occurred when parents left small children in hot cars while they smoked cannabis. The most common forms of death by neglect when parents use cannabis are fires, 15, drownings, 10 and hot cars, 10.”

Tessa Murray, 23, has been charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent as a result.

Police began investigating the case after the 10-month-old was brought to IU Ball Memorial Hospital. When officers arrived, they learned the baby had suffered a dislocated femur fracture.

According to a police report, Murray changed her story about how the baby was injured. First she said her baby fell off a couch, later she said a 9-year-old pulled the child off.

During an interview with investigators, Murray gave consent for officers to search her phone. That’s when officers say they found numerous texts between her and her boyfriend.

This effect persisted after controlling for other putative risk factors for violence. “In a study done on nearly 500 marijuana users who attempted to quit using the drug, about 30% relapsed because the withdrawal symptoms were too much to handle. This result provides some evidence that marijuana addiction is a legitimate problem. In fact, the presence of marijuana withdrawal is one of the diagnostic criteria for cannabis use disorder according to the American Psychiatric Association.

Of the 469 marijuana users studied, 25% were considered heavy users, claiming to have smoked marijuana more than 10,000 times. Of those heavy users, more than 42% had experienced at least one withdrawal symptom when they tried to quit. The most commonly reported symptoms of marijuana withdrawal were boredom, anxiety, irritability, increased cravings, and sleeping problems. More than 78% of this heavy-use group started smoking marijuana again in order to alleviate the symptoms.’

Marijuana advocates have tried for years to convince us that marijuana is 100% safe. This is clearly not the case at all. Perhaps they are too stoned to see the problem.

The present study was conducted to characterize symptoms associated with marijuana withdrawal following chronic use during a supervised 28-day abstinence period. Three groups of participants were studied: (a) current chronic marijuana users, (b) former chronic marijuana users who had not used marijuana for at least 6 months prior to the study, and (c) marijuana nonusers. Current users experienced significant increases in anxiety, irritability, physical tension, and physical symptoms and decreases in mood and appetite during marijuana withdrawal. These symptoms were most pronounced during the initial 10 days of abstinence, but some were present for the entire 28-day withdrawal period. These findings support the notion of a marijuana withdrawal syndrome in humans”

You still don’t get it. It’s not addictive because it’s just not. That is well known outside biased NIDA-sponsored research. I’m not addicted because I have no symptoms when I don’t smoke for any amount of time. I smoke because I like it. No problem. You have a major problem with ignorance. It’s ironic because if anyone would benefit from getting really high it’s you.

IL, I guess you are 100% behind Sessions? The war on drugs is a good thing? I understand you like to make fun of HW, but what is your point? Red Meat (and the industries that create and bring it to us) are far more destructive than pot. Addiction in and of itself is no big deal, it is the social ramifications that make some thing big. Who cares if HW wants to smoke, it is those meat eaters that are ruining the planet. Next, we’ll talk about the evil sea food industry–jail time for shrimp addicts.

All use, manufacture and production of marijuana by white people should be punishable by life imprisonmemt without trial.

If we are going to jail poor brown families for the crime of seeking a better life in the name of “protecting children” then white weed users should be similarly impacted since marijuana presents clear dangers to both pets and children.

“One fifth of those who were pot smokers (22%) reported violent behavior that began after beginning to use cannabis, whereas only 0.3% reported violence before using weed. Continued use of cannabis over the life-time of the study was the strongest predictor of violent convictions, even when the other factors that contribute to violent behavior were considered in the statistical analysis.”-

    Scenario A.
    1. Trump consolidates federal law enforcement agencies into one Homeland Security department.
    2. Homeland Security enforces all federal laws within 100 miles of border or coastline with zero discretionary interpretation of the law.
    3. Marijuana use is prosecuted as the schedule I drug that it is.
    4. Hash bash becomes obsolete.
    5. HW wonders where it all went wrong as he contemplates real jail time for use, blames Deep State.

    Scenario B.
    1. Marijuana becomes fully legalized.
    2. Emboldened consumers demand quality, consistency, and pricing.
    3. Large companies with the infrastructure to it into place well recognized best manufacturing practices move into the market.
    4. A few bad outcomes reveal the true civil liabilities in producing products with active pharmaceutical effect.
    5. Consumers and large producers successfully lobby for industry standards for production quality.

HW— I’m going to suggest that you monitor your blood pressure while on MM. IL for sure hates marijuana. That doesn’t mean he thinks it should be illegal. I’m no great fan of alcohol and am very aware of the societal and personal issues excessive alcohol use creates, but I don’t support prohibition.
…So anyway, when IL writes something nasty about weed or about your reasoning due to excessive weed consumption, and your stoned, copacetic base-level blood pressure rises, he’s fucking with you. Now you can tell.

  161. Jean Henry

When weed for personal consumption is legal in Michigan, some people will have more problems, some people will have fewer problems, a lot of white people will get rich, and poor POC who grew and dealt weed when it was illegal will continue to rot in jail or will be prohibited from using their considerable knowledge to profit from legal pot. Oh and the government will get lots of tax revenue.

All in All, probably For the best, but I sure wish they’d fix the equity issue in all of it. And I hope they figure out how to regulate it properly.

Maybe legalized marijuana derived medication will look more like “big pharma” than HW would like. After all, when most people buy something , they want to have some assurance than what they buy is consistently of a certain quality. Otherwise there would only be small artisan producers of just about anything, and Starbucks wouldn’t be Starbucks.

HW— thought you knew this issue?
If you have a prior pot conviction and served time, you can not participate in legal marijuana trade in most states. In California you can apply for ‘resentencing’ to end that. Marijuana convictions with time served disproportionately impact POC. So yes. In a country with systemic racism, you will find evidence of inequity everywhere, including the weed trade.

Points to California for trying to figure it out, but for now, legal weed is mighty White. I know a few people in that business. They’ve done very very well.

I didn’t say growers were responsible. I said the current regulations for legal marijuana cultivation excludes people with prior convictions. I dont blame legal pot cultivators or vendors for the problems of ass incarceration.
