Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said today that the White House’s school safety commission, which she chairs, will not look at the role of guns in school shootings

Shortly after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida this past February that left 17 dead, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was charged with creating a School Safety Commission. Well, as of two weeks ago, when another another 10 people were gunned down at a Santa Fe, Texas high school, and DeVos responded once again by saying, “We simply cannot allow this trend to continue,” that School Safety Commission had only met one time, having held a short closed-door meeting on March 28. So, today, DeVos found herself on Capital Hill, answering questions about why, among other things, she isn’t taking this national crisis seriously. Following is a particularly jaw-dropping exchange between the anti-public education Amway heiress and Senator Patrick Leahy, in which DeVos says with a smile on her face that the White House Commission she’s leading will not be looking at the role of firearms as relates to gun violence in our schools.

It’s like studying automotive fatalities without looking at the role of cars.

They will, however, be looking into the role of violent video games… and, one would expect, the teaching of evolution.

Welcome to Trump’s post-reality America.

Why not investigate the metal industry, as bullets are made of metal? Why not pass laws to slow bullets down so that people can dodge them? The truth is, this is what freedom looks like. If you don’t like it, move to Sweden where people are happier and live longer.

They should also investigate porn. Rep. Diane Black (R-Tennessee) says that’s the problem, not ready access to military weapons.

Maybe Dennis Rodman can weigh in on guns in school after he solves North Korea. Even he’s not crazy enough to buy the NRA false equivalency bullshit.

Now that the executive branch of the US government has been hijacked by a band of utter lunatics, I feel a bit less inclined not to stockpile weapons.

It’s nice that Secretary DeVos can laugh and smile in light of the deeply disturbing subject matter. I was worried she might be struggling from the devastation she must have felt regarding the unspeakable horror of these shootings. I’m so relieved to see she seems to be recovering.

I’m fully in favor of Betsy having firearms around her house, out on counters and coffee tables, and loaded, with the safeties off. Dick might behave a little better.

New York Times: “Betsy DeVos Is Said to Weigh Letting School Districts Use Federal Funds to Buy Guns”

The Education Department is considering whether to allow states to use federal funding to purchase guns for educators, according to multiple people with knowledge of the plan.

Such a move appears to be unprecedented, reversing a longstanding position taken by the federal government that it should not pay to outfit schools with weapons. And it would also undermine efforts by Congress to restrict the use of federal funding on guns. As recently as March, Congress passed a school safety bill that allocated $50 million a year to local school districts, but expressly prohibited the use of the money for firearms.

But the department is eyeing a program in federal education law, the Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants, that makes no mention of prohibiting weapons purchases. That omission would allow the education secretary, Betsy DeVos, to use her discretion to approve any state or district plans to use grant funding for firearms and firearm training, unless Congress clarifies the law or bans such funding through legislative action.
