As Mueller pushes to revoke Manafort’s bail, Trump is coming unglued

Yesterday, the President’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani, speculated that, had he wanted to, Trump could have shot FBI Director James Comey to death instead of firing him, and not faced any legal consequences, at least so long as he stayed in office. Then, this morning, Trump took things a step further on Twitter, stating that, should he decide to do so, he could pardon himself of any crimes. “I have the absolute right to PARDON myself,” he wrote, before launching into a tirade about how “The appointment of the Special Counsel is totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL!” As interesting and terrifying as all of that is, though, I’d like to focus right now on something he said prior to declaring himself above the law…

Oh, but first, here’s the best response to Trump’s “I can pardon myself” tweet that I’ve seen thus far. It comes from Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff.

Now, as for that tweet of Trump’s I’d like to focus on… it had to do with his former Campaign Director Paul Manafort… Here it is.

And the above tweet, I should add, came just after another tweet, which was also about Manafort. In that one, Trump asks, “(W)hy wouldn’t the FBI or Department of “Justice” have told me that they were secretly investigating Paul Manafort (on charges that were 10 years old and had been previously dropped) during my campaign? Should have told me!

Both of these tweets seemed odd to me at the time. In light of the news just breaking tonight, however, about how Mueller is seeking to revoke Paul Manafort’s bail, as the latter has apparently been caught engaging in witness tampering, having sent encrypted messages to associates in hopes of securing “false testimony”, it all kind of makes sense.

So it looks as though the net is tightening around Manafort, and Trump, knowing that this was happening, launched a two-pronged preemptive attack, claiming to both hardly know Manafort, and blaming the Department of Justice for not warning him that the chairman of his campaign was under surveillance for any number of crimes. Both, of course, are untrue. Trump was warned about Manafort, and he’d known years what kind of man he was.

Here are just a few points to consider when mulling over Trump’s suggestion that he and Manafort hardly knew one another… 1. Trump has known Manafort since 1980, when his mentor Roy Cohn introduced them. 2. Donald Trump was Paul Manafort’s first lobbying client in the early 1980s. 3. Manafort’s partner in that lobbying firm was Trump friend Roger Stone. 4. In 2006, Manafort purchased a Trump Tower apartment in an all-cash transaction. This, coincidentally, happened just after he signed a $10 million contract with Oleg Deripaska, a Putin-aligned Russian oligarch… So, no, it’s not true that Trump hardly knew him when he came onboard to run the campaign, as Trump has suggested. Trump has been friends with Paul Manafort for almost 40 years, and was well aware of the kind of work that he did for unsavory characters around the globe.

As for the claim that he hadn’t been warned about Manafort, here’s a little background by way of Talking Points Memo.

…In fact, as CNN pointed out, Trump was reportedly warned in August 2016 that foreign actors would attempt to infiltrate his campaign.

The Washington Post reported in April that Manafort had been interviewed twice by the FBI while working as a consultant for the pro-Russian Ukrainian ruler Viktor Yanukovych’s political party, in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Trump’s attempt to minimize Manafort’s role echoes Sean Spicer’s statement in March of last year: the one-time campaign chairman “played a very limited role for a very limited amount of time,” Spicer said.

In reality, Manafort joined the campaign in March 2016 in order to oversee Trump’s Republican National Convention strategy, but his role quickly grew. In May, he was named campaign chairman. Former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, after his firing in June, said that Manafort “has been in operational control of the campaign since April 7.”

So, yeah, if I had to guess, I’d say that everything we’ve seen from Trump over the past day or so has been motivated by an intense fear on his part that Manafort, despite what mutual friend Roger Stone may tell him, might be getting ready to flip and start taking about how it was that, during the Republican National Convention, the Republican Party platform came to be rewritten to reflect the desires of Vladimir Putin, or, worse yet, the covert attempts to set up a secret backchannel communications link between Putin and Trump. And, I think, with Mueller pushing to revoke bail and put Manafort behind bars, we’re going see more of this from Trump. I think the insanity is just beginning.

Manafort in jail is something that I’d like to see regardless of whether it causes him to turn against Trump. Some people deserve to be behind bars.

Trump can kill people in office and not face prosecution. He can, however, be impeached for his crimes and prosecuted afterward. But he can also pardon himself, thereby avoiding prosecution. If you put all of these pieces together, you have a situation where our president can kill anyone he likes without fear of retribution. All we can do, if Trump’s legal team is right, is remove him from office.

The Atlantic: “in the middle of a scandal featuring collusion with the Russian state, it seems Manafort relied on an asset of Russian intelligence to abet a plot to tamper with a witness.”

At the height of his powers as a political consultant, Paul Manafort was known for his cool. In fact, the value of his counsel increased at moments of crisis. While others panicked, Manafort rarely evinced a hint of frazzle. He could still think strategically, detach himself from emotion, and issue clearheaded guidance. But he could afford to keep his head at such moments, because the problems he was called on to solve belonged to others.

Robert Mueller’s allegation that Manafort attempted to tamper with a witness permits us to peer inside Manafort’s mind as it has functioned in a very different set of circumstances. When it comes to Manafort’s own deep problems—his moment of legal peril—he seems unable to muster strategic thinking. He has shown himself capable of profoundly dunderheaded miscalculations.

It’s hard to understand how he could have attempted the scheme described by Mueller in the midst of the highest-profile, most scrutinized criminal inquiry of the century. But that alone fails to capture the depths of his blundering.

What Mueller recounted, in a new court document filed Monday night, is how Manafort attempted to contact members of the so-called Hapsburg Group earlier this year. Manafort had created the Hapsburg Group back in 2011. It comprised European politicians he’d recruited to help beautify the image of his authoritarian client Viktor Yanukovych, the president of Ukraine. It was a perilous moment for Yanukovych. He had brought his country to the brink of joining the European Union. But Yanukovych had jeopardized this momentous step by arresting his primary political opponent, Yulia Tymoshenko, in a fit of antidemocratic spite. The Hapsburg Group was sent to lobby against accusations of malfeasance.

There was no public trace of Manafort’s work with the Hapsburg Group—how he funneled millions of euros to it, how he enlisted it to lobby without filing the required disclosure—at least not until Mueller first described it, in his February 23 indictment of Manafort. In the days following the indictment, Mueller says, Manafort relentlessly reached out to two members of a public-relations firm that helped him coordinate the Hapsburg Group—by phone, by email, by Telegraph, by WhatsApp. These alleged efforts were the basis for Mueller’s accusation that Manafort was tampering with a witness, attempting to coach testimony, which would have violated the terms of his bail.

Of course, none of this should come as a surprise to Manafort. Each of Mueller’s new filings has further revealed the extent to which he is surveilling Manafort and his closest associates. A week before Manafort apparently attempted to tamper with the witness, Mueller stated plainly that he was watching their encrypted communication channels. And before that, Mueller showed that he was keeping tabs on Manafort’s email when he exposed an op-ed that Manafort had ghostwritten in his own defense, in violation of a judge’s gag order.

If we look back on Robert Mueller’s strategy over the past few months, the special prosecutor seems to repeatedly signal to Manafort: Look, I know everything; you have no choice but cooperation. It’s a pattern that continues with this filing, the first instance in which Mueller has deployed material supplied by Manafort’s old alter ego, Rick Gates. When Gates agreed to cooperate with Mueller, he handed over a raft of emails. We can see in the exhibits that Mueller attached to this filing that Gates possesses a comprehensive archive of Manafort’s dealings, a blueprint of his operation. There will be no ellipses in the Manafort trial. Gates can fill all the gaps.

There is another suggestive fact that Mueller posits in passing. Manafort’s witness-tampering scheme featured a co-conspirator. Mueller doesn’t name the accomplice, but his identity is not hard to discern from Mueller’s description. Manafort tried to contact his Hapsburg Group collaborators through his old Russo-Ukrainian aide, Konstantin Kilimnik.

By any rational standard, Manafort should have long ago jettisoned his relationship with Kilimnik. On two separate occasions, Mueller has described Kilimnik as having “ties to Russian intelligence.” Put differently, in the middle of a scandal featuring collusion with the Russian state, Manafort seems to have relied on an asset of Russian intelligence to abet a plot to tamper with a witness. That’s hardly the work of a strategic genius.

In other news, that all Dems seem to be ignoring, the CA top two primary process is fucked. There are so many Dems running they may split the vote with the primary going to the top two GOP candidates for seats.

I know we love the idea of Trump going down, but Dems are consistently the most strategically idiotic party ever.

Let’s hope it all works out in CA.

PS I gave $50 to Hillary (and the same to Bernie) and now receive one or two rob calls from the DCCC every day. I have asked many times to be removed from their list and even went through the process online three times. To no avail.

a friend suggested telling them I’d donate $5 to the GOP every time they call> Which I may need to fro. What are they thinking?

Worst campaign strategy ever. I thought they had their hands in deep pockets? Why do they want my money? Or maybe, crazy talk, instead of sowing fear and ramping up pressure constantly re the threat to our democracy and urgent need to donate, etc etc, they could put forward a truly inspiring and inclusive and, you know, not racist message. The bar is really fucking low. C’mon DNC. You can clear it!

    Two questions.

    1. Can Manafort be given a pardon prior to trial, or does he have to be convicted first?

    2. If he is given a federal pardon, can all of the government’s evidence then be immediately handed over to state courts for prosecution?

  8. Iron Lung 2
    Posted June 5, 2018 at 12:52 pm | Permalink

The President can pardon a person for federal crimes before the person has even been indicted, before or during a trial (Nixon). However, a pardon implies guilt, so that if Trump, for example, pardons himself, he is effectively admitting guilt, thus ushering in an impeachment process.

Yes, but please remember that Mueller, always acfew chess moves ahead, brought In the NY State Attorney General on the investigation. As I understand it, the President can not pardon those convicted of State criminal charges. And so any state criminal fraud charges faced by Manafort or the president could be met with jail time.

Maybe I’m wrong, but unless Trump lays very low, my guess is he’ll be doing Heim time for something before he dies. And I hope before I die. Or even my pop.

    Fuck that guy.

Someday most of his supporters will realize they’ve been duped. It may take a while. ThAts one argument for letting this thing roll out slowly. Many people only learn through natural consequences. Let’s bury this tariff thing for a few generations.

Why don’t you channel some of those morally superior feelings and some of your intelligence into attacking bigoted arguments when you come across them. I, for one, would applaud you for actually attacking lines of argument that are either outwardly bigoted or born out one of the attitudes of supremacy (white, male, straight, or otherwise).

You really need to look in the mirror. You employ the logic of a bigot. It is not only “very immature” it is a dangerous logic to employ. What does it really even mean to say some person *is* a “supremacist”?

Attack the actual be-ing of bigoted supremacy as it expresses itself in words and acts. Don’t attack the person.

Fallor ergo sum. — St Augustine

HW’s mind is a vacuum of circular logic energized by puffed up egotism that masks painful insecurities and obsessiveness. Also paranoia. Shermhead symptoms for sure.

Many of my closest friends use pot daily. None of them deny the possibility of problems with regular use. I believe it’s useful medicine for many. And fun for others. And some people are not suited and should steer clear. Like lots of other drugs.

I don’t think HW is stupid or uninformed. I think he’s both twisted and far too convinced he’s right. Those two together are a toxic combo. See our president.

Learn to separate fact and opinion. You go around like your opinion is fact. It doesn’t need to be rebutted. I had to look up ‘sherm.’ Never heard of that. Oh yeah, that’s me. Weed dipped in PCP!

  60. Jean Henry
    Posted June 6, 2018 at 3:12 pm | Permalink

Here’s a tip HW. It will help you understand others better. Everybody states their opinions as facts. If I’m saying or writing something in my own voice, I do not have to say I think or i believe before each statement. It does require some discernment to separate statements of fact from opinion, but I expect most people can manage that one. The only reason to state ‘I beluev’ Or I think or IMHO as prefix is if one is gingerly tiptoeing through uncomfortable discourse. I’m not going to tiptoe with you. I don’t expect you to either.

I speak with a degree of directness. I don’t equivocate or apologize before hand. Many women do, especially in the Midwest where many are conditioned to apologize before ordering a coffee. I deal that with that daily for years. I’m sorry if I don’t cowtow enough for your taste. I thought you were man enough to handle it. You have asserted your manliness many times in the past. Do confident women make you uncomfortable? Asking for a friend.

  61. Jean Henry
    Posted June 6, 2018 at 3:18 pm | Permalink

Ps Shermhead no longer refers to weed/pcp. It just means someone who smokes so much they don’t function as a regular person anymore. It’s someone who displays symptoms of excessive pot consumption— even when sober. It takes a lot lot lot of weed to get someone there, but it can happen. It’s always a little impressive when someone takes it that far. It’s not even addictive. You have to be super committed to being perpetually f’d up to get there.

If something was off innour interaction at my business, I’m pretty sure it was because I thought you were a creep, HW. Not everybody liked that joint, but many did. I’m still good friends with most of the staff and customers. There was a community standard set in that place of decent standards. If someone was being an ass, the others in line corrected them. I rarely had to. I’m proud to have run the kind of business that made dudes like you uneasy. My regulars and staff would back me up on that.

As to why we did a little bit of everything, and it was a lot more than penny toys and pastry, that’s what little neighborhood places do to survive. We pulled more than half a million in business every year out of 1200 square feet in the middle of a neighborhood. And no one got ripped off. Our busiest day of our first year in business was 9-11-01 when other businesses were empty. People kept coming in—- I guess because it was a weird place that made people uncomfortable… I’m sorry you couldn’t quite understand why a corner store across from an elementary school would sell toys and coffee and pastries. You are clearly a genius about business as well as politics, like your hero.

I am still struck to learn that supporting white supremacists, spreading propaganda for would be dictators, calling women “dumb bitches” and taking the ridiculous position that “white men have right, too” (as to say that calling for the rights of women and minorities somehow diminishes the rights of white men) is considered “mature” whereas ridiculing such demented people is “immature.”

I would posit that Mr. Flakes believes that there were “good people on both sides” of the Charlottesville protests, recently. I would suspect that Mr. Flakes might even go so far as to argue that there are “good people” in the KKK or even fine National Socialists.

Mr. Flakes appears to be just that, a flake. He appears too sheepish to actually come out against true injustice because it would require too much work on his part, so he comes out against those who find racism, misogyny and authoritarianism reprehensible.

It is people like Mr. Flake who enable dictatorships and genocides, people who are relatively literate who willingly allow power to fester and say nothing until it is too late and then deny culpability when it is. People like the Mr. Warlord are simple pawns, too dense, drunk or high to realize what’s going on. The Flakes of the world are the ones who do the real damage, however.

Mark– While I appreciate the diversion of your solicitation of commentary on your own appearance and datability, I dont think it’s fair substitution. I’m sure it doesn’t bother you much to be assessed based on appearance because that’s not how your value is assessed daily, no matter context. When dealing with commenters who regularly express their fear of feminism and social justice movements and their concern for the neglect of white men’s rights, my commentary was not one of sensitivity but of pointing up a persistent double standard. Your comment and solicitation pretty much denies that double standard exists. It implies not legitimate complaint on my part, but acute sensitivity.

I’m a feminist. I don’t expect men to get it. And that perspective is regularly validated. I’m going to keep offering that particular perspective however. Cant make things worse.

Senator Flake has been nothing but honorable throughout this whole debacle. He has stood up to Trump if anything.

Not a Stupid Hick comment I see. I asked you how you think I am mentally ill and how it is not mentally ill to say what IL said. Your answer sets the whole thing back. You people are so far behind you don’t get it that some people are running circles around you.

Haven’t we all learned that intelligent, logical, productive conversation has been rendered impossible in our culture? At this point, we really should just be sharing our ideas as to how we each plan to spend our time and energy during this cultural and social collapse.

What does this back and forth in the comments section here accomplish? What is the goal?

Sad– Were you around for FF’s heart felt defense of White Supremacists and condemnation of Antifa after Charlottesville? I don’t think so. Going back to those articles, may help you understand some of the tension.

I wonder if Frosted Flakes was at least in part deliberately just trying to provoke you and the others, Jean.

But Jean is probably right, criticising Mark’s physical appearance is wrong. Besides, his looks are the least of his problems.

Seriously, have you ever met him? A group of us once scheduled a meeting with him to discuss community matters. He was only 5 minutes late. We waited another half hour for his personality to show up. Finally we just gave up and went home.

I have reviewed the transcripts. This is likely not the case.

Mr. Flakes and the Mr. Warlord both would likely both blame Jews for “provoking” the National Socialists into building concentration camps. In previous post, neither were overly concerned about the Unite the Right rally, instead choosing to focus on the groups which arrived to protest racism and ethnic cleansing, despite mealy mouthed disclaimers to the effect of “I’m not racist.”

    Sad.

    And certainly immature.

…and he won’t take responsibility for anything. He even started doing a radio show, so for any interaction anyone had with him they could only blame themselves.

    Really, that’s how he thinks.

In the dictionary, next to the word “Dull,” it says “Go find your own picture of Mark Maynard.”

    It’s embarrassing.

iRobert on the other hand can rant on for 20 posts and not make me laugh. It’s not that I’m humorless; he’s just not funny.

Humor needs to in some way reflect the truth to amuse and come off as something more than attention-seeking behavior.

Bull fucking shit. I consider it an extreme offense for you to say something like this. You love being the biggest piece of shit you can be, don’t you? You are a wannabe version of the people who tried framing the president. You intentionally misrepresent what people say to use it as a weapon.

Very wrong too. That goes for all you swampsuckers. You’ve been wrong on everything so far. Flynn was railroaded; McCabe is in trouble for it. Obama spied. Nothing has led to Trump collusion. None of all those different little angles like Papadopolous, Manafort and FBI spy Carter Page have led to SHIT about Trump. I could go on and on. The economy, North Korea, ISIS, human trafficking…I tell the truth and you try to make me seem crazy. You find yourself able to do it less and less now. I expect the paroxysms of people like you and Iron Lung will get even more extreme as it unfolds the way I said. Problem is the more you try to vilify me as things get better the more obvious it will be to everyone you are full of shit. Even you will have to admit it.

    What an avalanche of justice!

While several of the President’s closest associates have either been convicted, or are already serving prison sentences, no one named above has even been charged with a crime. McCabe was not only not charged, but will now be suing the US government, and likely winning a huge settlement. Please keep that in mind the next time you’re feeling depressed.

People who follow Q are, without a doubt, some of the stupidest people to ever walk the earth.

I have never read one thing by Qanon and I think it is a reasonable list of potentially corrupt individuals. Read the Horowitz report. Listen to the testimony Horowitz gave. Did you not hear that the FISA abuse is an established fact? What was the actual purpose behind the Mueller report and impeachment?

  167. Hyborian Warlord

All those people are about to be screwed. These things take time. None of these anti-Q people have come to grips with the reality of a major criminal investigation occurring involving several of those people I listed. I’d say that is strong evidence Q is correct.

Oh, yeah: the fellow running the far-reaching criminal probe was sworn in as interim US Attorney the same day as Q’s first post. It’s just a coincidence though I’m sure. Nothing for you to worry about.
