Donald Trump didn’t drain the swamp, but he’s filling the shithole

My intention was to spend my time this evening researching changes to the Medicaid program announced today by the Trump administration that will give states the ability to refuse Medicaid to any individual who is not either working, going to school, acting as caregiver, or participating in some sanctioned form of “community engagement”. But, then, I received the above message from the Washington Post, and my plans changed…. It isn’t every day, after all, that one can use the word “shithole” in a headline.

This afternoon, in the Oval Office, during a discussion about immigration, our President, Donald Trump, posed the following question. “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”, he asked the assembled Senators, who, as I understand it, had been discussing the what to do about the immigrants from from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries that are currently living in the United States. Then, after saying that, the President, according to several sources, suggested that, instead of allowing in immigrants from such places, we instead just take immigrants from countries like Norway. As I understand it, he didn’t explicitly note the fact that Norwegians are, for the most part, white, whereas immigrants from these other nations are, for the most part, non-white, but I think everyone in the room got the subtext.

If this had happened earlier in his presidency, I might have thought that Trump had said it in hopes of attracting attention away from the fact that, because of today’s guidance to state Medicaid directors, about 11 states will likely start kicking people off of Medicaid, or the fact that he’s getting ready to announce what the rest of us knew years ago, which is that the idea of an actual border wall is both impractical and stupid. But, really, I think he’s just an old, fucking racist who can’t help himself from saying things like this when they pop into his head. And, sadly, at least in this instance, he’s not just hurting the hardworking immigrants from these so-called “shithole” nations who make their home here, but also our standing with allies in Latin America and Africa, who, among other things, are critical in the global fight against terrorist organizations… But this is apparently who we are now — the nation of Trump — where, at this very minute, Tucker Carlson is celebrating the President’s refreshing honesty on Fox news, and racist sheriff Joe Arpaio, after being pardoned by Trump, is now working on his Senate campaign.

And, for that it’s worth, this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. This is the same Donald Trump who, despite evidence, wanted the death penalty for the Central Park Five, and then questioned whether or not the first black President of the United States was actually as “American” as the rest of us. He’s always been an insidious racist, and, if we’re being honest, that’s one of the main reasons he won the 2016 election.

UPDATE: The President this morning denied having said these racist things. Democrat Senator Durbin, who was in meeting with the President, then went on record confirming that he had. “He said these hate-filled things,” Durbin said. Here’s video of Durbin.

Frank Luntz just pointed out the following:

43% of immigrants from “shithole” African countries have a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 33% of the overall American population…. Nigerian-Americans, for instance, have a median household income well above the American average.

    Totally depressing.

As for diversionary tactics; I’ve always held that Trump is racist and a dangerous idiot, but that it was his handlers who let him loose or restrain him based on whether they want the media diversion. Lately they’ve been trying to control him by managing what information he gets or doesn’t, which is next level…

I never thought Trump was calculating. He’s reactive. He won because he watched the applause meter and just repeated whatever got the most audience cheers (by his own account) not because he had any agenda, precisely because he didn’t. And there ain’t no dog whistle in US politics quite like racism.

I think Trump says what many in America believe but don’t say. Centering and privileging all things Western European is not exactly unusual in American politics, media or culture. Trump just makes it plain. He assumes these ways of thinking, because they exist throughout our culture. He didn’t think them up consciously; he absorbed them. And when he repeated them, he got big cheers.

And that is exactly how the right wing media is responding to these comments. They honestly have no idea what we are upset about. Trump has what they call ‘common sense.’ His thinking is not unique, but common…

As for Medicaid, the people I know on it were on it precisely because they were too ill or disabled to work. Without it they would die. This is a horror.

“God emperor”– They DO NOT care. And the more we care, the more they double down on their support for Trump. I don’t know where the tipping point is. It’s like dealing with an addict. Everyone at a remove says “They just have to hit bottom.”But their friends and family are thinking “Is this bottom?” “What about this?” “Are we at bottom yet?” as the addict slides deeper and deeper into that particular madness. I love America. I really, really love it. I love it enough to hate it right now. We have to turn this around. We are not exceptional, but we are a great diverse and democratic experiment, and there is a whole lot of more broadly human hope tied up in our ability to recover from this bullshit.

They are racist like Trump in that they don’t know they are racist. Because being racist is terrible. And yet we live in a country with racist outcomes across the damn board. So it;s more than a few rotten eggs. On the other hand, we are more diverse than most western countries and we have a much longer history of being open to immigration than other countries. And every other Western country that has opened it’s borders even a crack is dealing with this same kind of nationalism/racism. And most non-Western countries are not even open to immigration, so they can say they are not racist, while not actually endeavoring to become more diverse.

I’ll take the American experiment any day. I prefer engagement with issues of injustice to denial that they exist. It’s ugly but its real and it’s not just evading the issue.

Three weeks ago: “According to six officials who attended or were briefed about the meeting, Mr. Trump then began reading aloud from the document, which his domestic policy adviser, Stephen Miller, had given him just before the meeting. The document listed how many immigrants had received visas to enter the United States in 2017. More than 2,500 were from Afghanistan, a terrorist haven, the president complained. Haiti had sent 15,000 people. They “all have AIDS,” he grumbled, according to one person who attended the meeting and another person who was briefed about it by a different person who was there. Forty thousand had come from Nigeria, Mr. Trump added. Once they had seen the United States, they would never “go back to their huts” in Africa, recalled the two officials, who asked for anonymity to discuss a sensitive conversation in the Oval Office.”

A study a few years ago found Nigerians to be the most successful immigrant group, compared with all others. The Africans who come here are often the brightest and most capable people from their countries, contribute to American society, are mostly socially conservative people and send ample sums of money back home, getting us off the hook for foreign aid.

I don’t think that Trump’s statements are shocking. He is like your ignorant old uncle. What is shocking is that people don’t speak up in the meetings to correct him.

I was thinking the same thing IL. Why did the Dems in the meeting speak up if they found his language so offensive. I know it was a negotiation, but it seems that someone needs to correct the President in real time, if we are going to serve the greater interest of our reputation abroad versus playing to political outrage. I’m also frustrated that it took the media so long to call his comments racist.

Of course, the Breitbart trending story is that Don Lemon called Trump racist on live TV.

Why this is shocking, I do not know. It should be common. It took the media forever to say Trump was lying v ‘not telling the truth.’ They need to use the appropriate and accurate language, and that’s calling it racism.

The only tactics Democrats have is to throw mud and hope some sticks. The immigration deal was getting too close, so now let’s all accuse Trump of being racist. That’s a good touch Jean. Add some more sex harassment accusations.

Looks likely that we’ll have a comprehensive immigration bill that has a path to citizenship for the DACA kids while sending the parents who crossed illegally back home. Most of the “kids” are over 21. Build walls to block high crossing areas and require electronic verification of citizenship prior to employment. Then we would have full employment with rising wages.

And IL – While I don’t think calling a country a shithole is inherently racist, suggesting that immigrants are the only persons fit to empty bedpans certainly is.

    Posted January 12, 2018 at 7:41 pm | Permalink

“Fit” isn’t the right word. “Willing” is. Immigrants from poor countries are coming to the US, going to school and becoming health care workers, of which we don’t have enough of.

As for “electronic verification,” that’s just big government at work. If I should have to be fed into a database to obtain work then I should have to be fed into one to buy a gun. It can be argued that I have a Constitutional right to both, with or without interference of the surveillance state.

If the right wants databases, well, let’s just do this thing. It won’t be pretty.

We currently have 1.1 unemployed persons per job opening in the US. Talk to any small business paying crap wages and they are ‘always hiring’ but can’t find applicants. This was not the case in 2008. The open jobs are mostly skilled jobs requiring trained employees. To achieve full employment we need to focus on training and education not immigration. Immigration has Been shown to be an economic driver not a drain. Undocumented workers are less likely to commit a crime than citizens. I could go on and on. The whole premise of your protectionism argument is false. Your alternative facts are based on bigoted fear not reality. It’s interesting that conservatives are fine with protectionism and big government as long as it oppresses brown or black people or women.

    http://www.truthwiki.org/snopes-snopes-com/
Snopes is just one of Obama’s (and Hillary’s) mass media shilling websites

In the “cash for hostages” deal Obama recently made with Iran, where Iran wouldn’t release our men until a plane full of cash (nearly half a billion dollars) arrived at the location of exchange, the “myth-busting” shill site Snopes rushed to defend Obama, before the State Department fully uncovered Obama’s blatant lie to the American people was spread across mass media. Again, Snopes ignored KEY FACTS in order to print their own “facts” in their rogue attempt to save face for their tyrannical leader. The irony is that every time Snopes gets caught in another one-sided political lie, they lose more traffic, just like their cohorts at CNN, MSNBC, Forbes, Washington Post (8), Boston Globe, Politifact, (7) and the New York Times. (9) Snopes often uses the “straw man” strategy (5), where they argue and rehash points that nobody is disputing anyway, to sound like they have made some valid points in order to convince readers that the rest of their story isn’t fabricated–anything to cover up the heart of the matter, which was the massive ransom payment made by America’s President to terrorists. HW your bet that Trump would win was an easy one. Clinton was the only candidate that he could defeat (the polls were demonstrating that as early as January and February of 2016). The plutocrats are getting everything on their wish list while at the same time they have clearly neutered your man, he is reduced to “tweeting” and denying his true nature. Quit pathetic really. Obvious he can not withstand the true power brokers and once the plutocrats have gotten everything they desire (voter suppression, deregulation of finance, perhaps another war) he will disappear and they will give us some one more palatable and politically correct (perhaps Pence, but maybe Oprah) to soothe the masses. The neo-con, neo-liberal agenda stands triumphant despite Trumps blathering.

JH, I disagree with you about our Generals. The only time our Generals have spoken up against going to war is when they are retired. Military members understand the horrors of war better than you. They aren’t eager for it, but they are usually willing to go along with the commands of their superiors, unless that superior is a reactive autocratic nut job. Even the most hawkish Generals are not keen on nuclear war.

My mother is an unreliable narrator with a streak of paranoia and a penchant for both hyperbole and invective. She also has a lot of crackpot theories, but every once and a while, something she’s been saying for years and that we all laughed at, comes true. Like that painting she bought for $100 at an estate sale was, in fact, of a Medici.

When it turns out that one of HW’s theories is in fact accurate, I will be similarly amused. The fact that the 1000 other theories were entirely false will not deter his enthusiasm, and for years after, like my mother, he will be replying to any scoffing, something along the lines of “But I was right about the Medici.”

It is clear that Trump’s power has been reduced to simply Tweeting, and even that he has to back peddle on when he is told.

How do you think J. Edgar Hoover maintained the power he had for so long? It is called having the dirt on all the politicians. Nobody wanted to challenge the man for fear of what he would do to them. Now we have a faceless bureaucracy that can clearly control our political elite. They willingly go along because by doing so you’ll get to be very wealthy. Trump has backed away from all of his statements that would challenge the elite. His “opposition” to the re authorization of warrant less surveillance of US citizens (an act that he is victim of) lasted all of about 4 hours before he was brought into line.

Or maybe he really uses his ‘executive time’ to plot to undermine the deep state. JH I agree with your analysis of Trump being hard to manage. The only thing that really seems to motivate him is his popularity. Today after a panic was caused in Hawaii the only thing he wanted to tweet about was the “fake news” about him and that the media has not gotten over him winning the election. If it is not about him then it is not important.

The Democrat elite love him. Best fund raiser they have had in years. They quit possibly will retake control of the House. Maybe even a few progressives and anti-corporatist will get elected. Unless there is a wave that sweeps away people like Pelosie and Wasserman-Shultz in the primaries, we will just continue to get more of the same neo-liberal austerity at home and neo-con war mongering in foreign policy.

The good news is more and more good folks are stepping up to challenge the corporate collaborationist. People who are refusing to take corporate money and have impeccable personal histories. Most are running in Democratic Party primaries. Dingell is not the worst but our district has been the fiefdom of her family since the wave election in 1932 (thanks to the UAW which heavily distorts Michigan Democratic politics they would rather have the Party lose an election than they lose control of the Party).

There is none. It’s sleight of hand. He called it a matter, not an investigation at the request of Loretta Lynch after her meeting on the tarmac with Bill Clinton.

Uranium One justice is starting to happen. I know some of you said that’s what? A wack-job conspiracy theory or some shit? Now look. You are having to start eating that, aren’t you? Who else will be indicted? No one higher level than the transportation guy you think? Lolling like a lil troll-bot just makes you look like one of those. But none of what transpires in the comments section has any value to the world.

Winning…losing…why does it matter. Death will come for all of us. The world will move independently of what a few people who post here say.

No one will change their views based on what the Mr. Warlord or anyone else posts. A meaningless existence seeking validation in the comments section of a local political blog.

    A vain search for power.

I like spreading truth and countering lies. You don’t believe truth matters so we’re not really talking about the same thing. Knowledge is power and I have a fair bit of knowledge so it’s not really necessary to “search” for power. I just do what I do and keep learning more every day.

It’s really interesting if you read the EO from 12/21/17. The Treasury is now authorized to seize US assets of anyone involved in corruption or human rights abuse around the world. It is also authorized to seize assets of associated people in the US.

  179. Hyborian Warlord
    Posted January 15, 2018 at 12:26 am | Permalink

So anyone who did business with a human rights abuser or corrupt entity and had assets in the USA can have them taken now. For example Israeli billionaire Dan Gertler is on the list of individuals in the addendum noted for corruption and abuse of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At one time Bill Clinton gave him a pardon. If the Clinton Foundation was found to have received donations from Gertler those could be confiscated.

Sad: Shaw, while entertaining, was not exactly prone to nuance. in what possible way could HW create any progress in this world? You could have used the MLK creatively maladjusted line instead, but we know HW isn’t a creative person. He’s not originating these ideas. He’s just a insecure bitter angry man seeking someone to Blame— the perfect mark for a con.

HW is also in favor of authoritarian police state solutions. The most anti-american who comments on this page. According to his take on the executive order he is touting, anyone doing business with, ” anyone who did business with a human rights abuser or corrupt entity and had assets in the USA can have them taken now.” That would include every major US banking entity. After all they have all been found guilty of corrupt and fraudulent actions, money laundering etc. And since almost everyone does business with the major banks, he is singing the praises of an executive order that can be used to seize any ones property.

  185. Hyborian Warlord
