As Trump refuses to distance himself from America’s white domestic terrorists, we appeal to members of the GOP to acknowledge the blood on their hands and do the right thing before things get even worse

[The above quote, offered earlier today in Charlottesville, is from white supremacist David Duke. You’ll find the context below.]

As news was breaking this morning about the events in Charlottesville, many of us, in our own little ways, tried to help push members of the GOP into making statements rebuking those who had taken to the streets, demanding that we “return” this nation of ours to members of the so-called white race. Others, I suspect, were more persuasive, but this is how my long Twitter rant, directed at the leaders of the GOP, began.

While many in the GOP, like Ben Sasse, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Orin Hatch, and even Ted Cruz, finally came off the sidelines once it became known that 32 year old Heather Heyer had been murdered, releasing strongly worded statements, our president, Donald Trump, never went so far as to acknowledge the role of white supremacist ideology, or call out the fact that what we saw today was a domestic terrorist attack conducted by bigots who want – in the words of Ted Cruz – “to tear our country apart.” Trump, as the day would wear on, would put out a series of statements, each of which would inch closer to the real issue, but, for whatever reason, he never came out with a clear condemnation of the growing threat posed by white nationalism.

First, Trump, after ignoring the events in Charlottesville for as long as he possibly could, came out with a hollow statement about how there was blame to be had “on many sides.”

Then, walking away from the podium at his New Jersey golf club, Trump turned his back on reporters asking whether or not what we were seeing play out in Charlottesville should be considered terrorism, and how he feels about the fact that he continues to enjoy the enthusiastic support of our nation’s white nationalists.

As for those white nationalists Trump has the support of, here’s another piece of video footage from this afternoon. This clip, taken at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, features KKK leader David Duke reflecting on the work that he and other racists are doing to “fulfills the promises of Donald Trump.”

Chilling, right?

As for why Trump has chosen not only to remain silent about the violence of white domestic terrorists, but actually work phrases like “cherish our history” into his prepared comments [this was clearly meant as a nod to those racists rallying in Charlottesville to protect Confederate monuments] one can only guess. My sense, however, is that it probably has something to do with the fact that he knows these are the people who will take to the streets on his behalf when he’s eventually impeached, the most loyal members of the base, and he can’t afford to lose them. Regardless of why he finds it impossible to speak out, though, I think, at the very least, this should be a wake-up call to chief-of-staff John Kelly and the members of the GOP, who have to now realize the very real and growing threat posed by the fir right. Assuming they haven’t already started the process, Congress has to act swiftly to remove members of the racist right, like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller, from the White House. This, I think most would accept, is a necessary step that needs to be taken immediately in the wake of what we’ve just seen.

For what it’s worth, Trump did eventually come out and acknowledge that an anti-fascist protester had been murdered in Charlottesville this afternoon, although he did not identify her as such. [He also didn’t mention that her killer was a fan of his.] In a tweet, he said, “Condolences to the family of the young woman killed today, and best regards to all of those injured, in Charlottesville, Virginia. So sad!” Again, he did not call out the fact that the woman died as a result of a terrorist attack carried out by a white supremacist. [The suspected killer is a local man from Maumee, Ohio by the name of James Alex Fields, Jr.]

For what it’s worth, I don’t think it’s too late for members of the GOP to finally do the right thing and distance themselves from Trump and his “deep base” on the far right. I know it’s unlikely, seeing as how they didn’t do so after he threatened nuclear war against North Korea just a few days ago, but I’ve got to think that some in the GOP are beginning to realize that the path they’re on is untenable. Given the comments I linked to by the likes of Sasse, Bush, Hatch, Cruz and Rubio, I think it’s clear that they’re looking for an exit. The question is, will they actually stand up to their big money donors and do the right thing. Tweets, as we’ve all seen over the course of this past year, are cheap. Taking a real stand, however, and doing something like initiating a bipartisan commission on impeachment, or even moving to have the likes of Bannon evicted from the White House, is something different altogether. But it’s something that has to happen. And its our job to keep telling members of the GOP, every chance we get, that, if they act to stop things now, we’ll have their backs… even if the Koch brothers come after them.

Yes, they brought this on us… The years of lies. The years of race baiting. The years of fake news… They led us to where we are today. And there’s not a one of them that isn’t complicit. They went along for the good of the party, and the good of their donors. They stood by while people lied about Obama’s birthplace, in hopes of gaining political advantage. They called irrefutable scientific evidence into questions, in hopes of ingratiating themselves to the likes of the Koch brothers. They allowed a disinformation network like Fox News to take root, knowing that it would serve them well, without concern for the damage that would be done. They thought, however, that they could control it. But then came Trump, the living manifestation of everything they’d put in motion… all the greed, all the fear, all the lies, all the corruption. And now we have blood in the streets.

And for what? They did it all – they risked it all – to accelerate the growing divide between the rich and the poor in America. That’s all. It was just about money. And I’ve got to think some are beginning to see the reality of the situation, which is that, because of this, we’re now standing on the precipice of complete annihilation, with race wars simmering in our streets, and nuclear warfare being discussed as a very real possibility. This isn’t, I’m assuming, what they signed up for when they agreed to carry water for the GOP and the Sheldon Adelsons of the world. And we’ve got to hope that at least a few of them might start turning, if not for the good of the country, at least to salvage their family names from the dustheap of history.

And why not? What have they got to lose? We’re all, it would seem, going to die anyway. Why not go out fighting the evil old men who set all of this in motion? I mean, they aren’t monsters. They aren’t invincible. They’re just men. And they can be taken down. The tools they’ve given our members of Congress can, after all, be used against them… And that’s the kind of thing we erect statues for.

Speaking of statues…

Has there been any leaders who distanced themselves from the counter protestors? It seems the Democratic “Resistence” are the ones promoting all the violence in the streets. The angry mob with clubs and tear gas was not a justified response to despicable speech. I think Trump was right in distancing himself from both groups. This entire event was orchestrated.

Mark– I think it might be interesting for you to talk about White Supremacists in a movement you gravitated towards (v. one you reviled anyway) : punk.
I left the scene early do to sexism and casual racism I found unpalatable. I also defended it all on grounds of free speech. It was easy to walk away from because the movement didn’t want me, except in the very limited ways young male culture always wants young women present.

It seems a bit off the mark, if you don’t mind my saying, to bring up my fondness for early punk in relation to what we’re seeing take place right now in Charlottesville, but I’ll play along.

Here’s the simple answer. If I’d seen racism, I would have left. Granted, I was a white kid, and probably not the most perceptive, but I’d like to think, even at a young age, I knew right from wrong. Also, for what it’ worth, my experience in punk was somewhat limited. While it’s true that I idolize Television, the Talking Heads, Patti Smith, the Ramones and their ilk, I never ventured into the deep end of the pool. I don’t think I’ve attended even s single skinhead show. So, I don’t know if it’s an answer that satisfies you, but the punk umbrella, at least in the early years, was somewhat broad, and my tastes were somewhat focused. Furthermore, I got much of what I wanted outside of live shows, by way of records, tapes and CDs. It’s true that I’ve seen the Ramones a few dozen times, but, really, I didn’t spend much time on the punk circuit outside of that. So I don’t think I’m a good test case for your, “But punk was racist too” argument. With that said, though, yes, I will concede that there was a darker thread that ran through things, especially on the skinhead side of the spectrum. And, as you note, there was sexism… For the time being, though, I’d rather focus on the very real threat we have before us, which is that we’ve elected a man who essentially gave the white power set the freedom to crawl from the shadows and do us all very real harm.

My involvement with punk was mostly local and the scene didn’t seem especially racist from my POV or at least the people I knew distanced themselves from it. I knew a skinhead dude at Cass Tech who was pretty racist but non-threatening. The black kids used to mock him for being foolish in his racism and the worst he did was roll his eyes at them. He, and the couple of other blatant skinhead racists I knew always seemed like outliers. The sexism was there but was too subtle for me to notice it at the time or maybe not that subtle but existing within a mainstream culture that was pretty sexist too? Regardless, I didnt especially notice it.

Mark: It appears you didn’t read the link re punk. (Never pass up an opportunity to read Lester Bangs) Ron Asheton wore Nazi regalia. So did Lemmy (though not technically punk. punk-approved) There was and still is an active skinhead movement Down River. My larger point is that racism, even blatant outright racism, is everywhere, in every movement, political or otherwise. It’s easy to take a stand that is politically convenient. It’s harder when that behavior exists, maybe closeted, maybe not, within one’s own affiliations. Whenever I point such up, you assure me that X group is full of lovely people who could demonstrate X cultural disease. I don;t think the lines are drawn that neatly. To assume so bends to ideological ideas of good and bad. I’m not drawing equivalence between the groups and C-Ville and Punk. At all. I’m just saying the Punk movement turned a blind eye at the (maybe few) outright racists within it. It certainly took a cavalier attitude toward racist symbols. I see this as a pattern on the left– denial its own racism/sexism/bias/perpetuation of inequity by expression of outrage at outright racism/sexism etc. on the right.

The real work of creating change happens where we live and in the groups with which we are affiliated.

The Alinsky tactics are that both sides of protesters are from the same group. Alinsky advised students who wanted to protest Bush’s involvement in war to dress like Neo-Nazi’s and cheer wildly every time he mentioned the military while carrying Bush signs. This tactic takes the opponent off their message and into a continual denunciation of their supposed “supporters”. If the person being attacked refuses to take the bait, then the opposition will continually hound them that they actually support the despicable group. Alinsky calls it a win-win tactic regardless of the response. MM and other minions do their part by continually associating Trump with Alt-right skinheads. All of it is a form of fake news and has been repeated so often it no longer has an effect on anyone who pays attention and can remember events as far away as 6 months.

President Trump specifically condemns “white supremacists” and other extremist groups as forces behind the deadly protests and counter-protests this weekend in Virginia, a White House spokesperson said Sunday.

“The president said very strongly in his statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred. Of course that includes white supremacists, KKK Neo-Nazi and all extremist groups. He called for national unity and bringing all Americans together,” the spokesperson said from Trump’s private golf club in Bedminster, N.J.

Trump was criticized by leading Democrats and Republicans for not singling out white supremacists in his comments in the immediate aftermath of the deadly clashes Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.

What was clearly obvious was the lack of the police. Just as in Greensboro in the 80’s and other times the anti-fascist left has militantly confronted the racist right (some more recent like in Seattle), the Police were no where to be seen. At all the demo’s I’ve been at the Police presence was overwhelming. They set back and let the fights happen. The state wants a pretext. Anonymous has taken over the Daily Stormer. Their story before the hack was that the driver/White terrorist was Jewish and that explains everything. See Hyborian’s logic above. Open racists blow the cover of the coded racists of the ant and Christian Right. As such they represent an existential threat and so must be discredited. But just to make sure, even while discredited them with a convuluted conspiracy narrative, they will defend them against counter protestors, and so they establish a hierarchy of righteousness. In descending order, Christian and alt/right, white nationalists, white supremacists, white liberals, white radicals, white feminists, SJW’s, POC, leftists of color, queers, queer POC, queer POC feminists, terrorists and Hillary Clinton.

How is it not remarkable to have a Jewish Nazi running around doing something like this? I don’t think it is racist to notice. It’s hardly convoluted either. Did you say a damn thing when last year’s Wave of Anti-Semitic Threats That Swept the Land including A2 (MM noted it here iirc) turned out to be perpetrated a young Israeli man? No, you didn’t say shit did you? Don’t call me a conspiracy theorist when you fall for every fake threat and phony attack. I easily saw it for what it was so how could that be if I am crazy?

Trying to say Trump supporters are neo-nazis, admin? You’ve hit rock bottom.

I think Trump suspects Fields was a plant (Spencer too) and doesn’t want to get played by this shit. It’s enough to call for an end to violence on all sides. Antifa can stand and shout all they want as long as they don’t assault someone and so can neo-nazis. You have to be capable of being detached about it. That’s part of the deal with free speech.

There are long (several hours long) unedited videos (without commentary) of the violence in Charlottesville. I think it is important for anyone who is interested in “taking sides” to spend at least several hours watching these videos and to witness how the individual instances of violence unfold…

Site admin, I asked Hyborian, not you, what Trump has to lose. Hyborian, are you saying Fields might not really be a Nazi, he just plowed into a crowd to make Nazis look bad? And Trump is too clever to be fooled by that, and doesn’t want to disparage Nazis because it might be unfair? What do your friends think of your theory?

    EOS,

Try searching “Full: Alt-right rally and counter protestors in Charlottesville”.

The video is over 5 hours long. I would guess 3 hours of the video are raw footage somebody captured by just walking the streets. The video captures quite a few confrontations and violent altercations as they are forming…

LOL. I highly doubt *any* of your friends have ever had to admit that they were wrong. They might be doing it just to humor you though. I have seen lots of folks do that when people they know jump into the alternate reality deep end.

Reality is as deep as you want it. Everyone has an alternate reality because our understanding is limited by our senses and interpreted by our minds. Inaccuracy is built in. If you make it a habit to pay attention and don’t gloss over the details you can be less inaccurate.

All my friends and family have changed their mind on something because I said something that turned out to be correct. A lot of times people have been like “How do you know this shit that far ahead?” I’m just like “I pay attention. I study everything I can find…” I’m sure you don’t want to believe that because it’s a threat to your belief system but that’s how it is.

Now it’s coming out that organizer Jason Kessler was an Obama supporter associated with Occupy Wall Street. Even the SPLC noted there seems to be something to it:

    http://dcwhispers.com/breaking-charlotsville-unite-the-right-organizer-was-occupy-wall-st-activist-obama-supporter/#ZbpS1CGOxOIwXEla.99
Well this is fishy. His name is Jason Kessler. He is the one cited as the organizer of the now infamous “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The thing is, Mr. Kessler’s arrival on the “alt right” and/or “White Nationalist” scene didn’t occur until November 2016.

That’s right – Kessler didn’t start his white nationalist activism until after Donald Trump won the White House. Prior to that it appears he participated in the far left/socialist Occupy Wall Street movement as noted by the far-left, George Soros-funded Southern Poverty Law Center

Rumors abound on white nationalist forums that Kessler’s ideological pedigree before 2016 was less than pure and seem to point to involvement in the Occupy movement and past support for President Obama.

At one recent speech in favor of Charlottesville’s status as a sanctuary city, Kessler live-streamed himself as an attendee questioned him and apologized for an undisclosed spat during Kessler’s apparent involvement with Occupy. Kessler appeared visibly perturbed by the woman’s presence and reminders of their past association.

It also appears Mr. Kessler was actually a CNN on site correspondent during the Occupy protests: (these are being archived as it appears CNN is attempting to scrub its former affiliation with Mr. Kessler:)

I am not going to pretend to know what it all means but it impossible for me to watch the “American vanguard” video HW shared and not get a theater major vibe from the members when they speak about their beliefs. Even if the leader is just coming across as inauthentic and he is actually expressing his true beliefs, I find it impossible to believe that he could gain 10 followers let alone 200–it’s just not possible.

Again, I have no idea what it means. I would find it more likely to find out they are actually some kind of a dark-comedy-satire-theater-troupe rather than a hate group. Sorry, something is amiss, in my opinion….

I was just listening to Pod Save the World on the way home from work and they were suggesting that the police lacked weapons sufficient to take on the army of racists, who, we’re hearing now, had weapons stashes situated around the city. They made the decision, right or wrong, that they didn’t want to risk a bloody shooting war.
