Yesterday, freaking out that Trump was climbing in the Michigan polls, I announced on this site that I’d be taking some vacation time from work to help out at Democratic Party office here in Ypsi. I did so because I knew that, if I made a public proclamation, I’d actually probably follow through. And apparently it worked. I spent this afternoon at the campaign office on Michigan Avenue, on the phone, trying to convince known Democrats to spend some time between now and the election going door-to-door and making sure that people who have identified themselves as Clinton supporters actually have plans to go out and vote come next Tuesday. [As Joe Biden says, “You need a plan.”]
While I really enjoyed talking with those people who picked up their phones, I unfortunately didn’t have much luck convincing anyone to come down to the office and join me. [A lot of the people I was getting through to were elderly and couldn’t come out to volunteer because of health concerns.] That is, until I, quite by accident, dialed up the woman I know as Panda Ypsilanti. [I’d been trying to call an older man by the name of Smith, I believe, but apparently his number had been reassigned to the workplace of Ms. Ypsilanti.] I was a few sentences into my spiel, when she cut me off, saying something like, “The person you’re looking for isn’t at this number, and I know who you are, Mark Maynard.” And, with that, I got my first volunteer. And I also got the idea that, instead of just relying on the old Democratic phone lists to find volunteers, I should probably also try social media. So, in between calls, I started posting updates to Facebook, asking people to come out and join me. And, to my surprise, about a dozen people actually wrote back to me, asking for details as to how they might be able to help. And, with that in mind, I thought that I’d try the same thing here right now… So, if you’re reading this, please consider coming out and joining me.
Starting this weekend, there’s going to be a big four-day push in Ypsilanti, during which Lisa Zuber and her fellow organizers will be mobilizing dozens of volunteers to follow up with folks that have already been identified as Democratic voters, and insure that, if they haven’t voted already, they still intend to get out to the polls, take their friends with them, etc.
Here, in case you’re still not sold on the idea, are a few photos of the office. As you can see, there’s a lot of free food… as well as a lot of openings on the volunteer schedule. So, if you can spare three hours between now and Tuesday afternoon to save our democracy, please stop by and sign up for a shift. Or, if you want, you can email me your name, phone number, and the shift you’d like to take, and I can make sure that you get signed up.
Oh, and I should add that canvassing isn’t just good for our democracy and our Democratic candidates. It’s actually good for those of us who are going out and knocking on doors. Seriously, if you’re like me, and you’ve been feeling isolated, depressed, and hopeless this election cycle, there’s really nothing like walking around in the sunshine and talking with your fellow Ypsilanitians, who, like you, not only really want to see both the first woman in the White House, but also Donald Trump cast onto the waste heap of history… Also, for what it’s worth, this – our ability to organize and go door-to-door in a systematic way – is really the biggest advantage we have this election cycle. Trump, while he has supporters, has not got a Get Out the Vote ground game to speak of. So, this, my friends, is where we beat him. And you can be a part of it!
Oh, and in addition to knocking on doors election day, we’re also going to need people working at polling places, making sure the people waiting in line to vote have everything they need to stick it out however long it might take for them to cast their ballots. So, if you don’t want to knock on doors, you can always do that. I’ve also heard, for those of you with vehicles, that the Washtenaw Dems might be looking for people to drive voters to the polls, but I’ve yet to confirm that.
One last thing… If you don’t live in Ypsilanti, you can still do your part. You can find your nearest Clinton campaign office here. Or, if you can’t help in person, you can always make a financial contribution. The important thing is that you find a way to be a part of this. If you don’t, you’re going to regret it later. Trust me.
Oh, and, yes, we’re working out of the office where local real estate agent Jack Brown was murdered in 1984, but it’s really not creepy at all. I promise.

At this stage of the game it’s not about identifying Clinton supporters. It’s about ensuring that everyone who indicated an interest in voting for Clinton gets out to the polls and votes, and that no Trump supporters try to stop them.
Is there a Trump ground game at all? Does he have local offices? I have no idea how his campaign is operating.

The bad bad man should be getting .04% of the vote nationally–to show without a shadow of a doubt that we’re not so indecent and hateful a country after alll. Alas, that’s almost surely not how it will be. But we can make his loss meaningful and must.There’s every reason to work our collective butts off through next Tuesday–for ourselves, for the people who are being blocked from voting, for those too young to vote, and all the people who have been and will continue to be harmed by the hate free-for-all we’re living in.

Olivia, one of the things about this election that really has disappointed me is that so many people are willing to overlook the blatant sexism and racism coming out of the mouth of Trump. This shouldn’t be a close election and that it is says a LOT about where we are as a nation in terms of just plain old common decency. I wish Trump’s “Make American Great Again” slogan was a call for greatness in terms of kindness, compassion, etc. but alas it isn’t.

I am equally surprised that so many are willing to overlook the fact that Hillary is funded by the same people that fund ISIS and that voters are willing to give up their free time to support a candidate whose indictment on corruption charges is inevitable. Can’t say her treatment of the Benghazi victims or their families was all that kind or compassionate either.

I didn’t believe in birtherism, but did say that Obama should release his birth certificate and not a “certificate of live birth” which was a different document and didn’t prove that he was born in Hawaii. Hillary started the birtherism questions and Trump put it to rest by getting Obama to release a birth certificate. If he had nothing to hide, there was no reason not to release the proof.

“We believe that most of the bounces seen in surveys this year represent sampling noise that can be reduced or eliminated by adopting by better statistical methodology. We risk a repetition of 2012 where polling swings were largely statistical mirages. The convention and first debate bounces in 2012 were mostly the consequence of transitory variations in response rates. Fewer voters were changing their minds than were changing their inclination to respond to surveys.
Most telephone polls use independent samples, so the respondents in one week’s poll are different from those in another week’s. This makes it impossible to distinguish change in individual vote intentions from changes in sample composition from week to week. It is possible that five percent of the electorate switched from Clinton to Trump over the past week (decreasing Clinton’s lead by 10 points). None of them said they intended to vote for Donald Trump, but five percent said they were now undecided, would vote for a third party candidate, or would not vote. Of the Trump supporters, only 91 percent said they were still planning on voting for Trump. Five percent moved to undecided, one percent to Clinton, and the rest to third party candidates or not voting. The net effect was to increase Clinton’s lead by almost four points. That was real change, though significantly less that the ten point change to Clinton’s lead seen in some polls.
Other events, however, have not had any detectable impact on voting intentions. We did not see any shifts after the release of the Access Hollywood video, the second or third presidential debates, or the reopening of the FBI investigation into Clinton’s emails. When the same people were reinterviewed, almost all said they were supporting the same candidate they had told us they were supporting in prior interviews. The small number who did change their voting intentions shifted about evenly toward Clinton and Trump so the net real change was close to zero.
Although we didn’t find much vote switching, we did notice a different type of change: the willingness of Clinton and Trump supporters to participate in our polls varied by a significant amount depending upon what was happening at the time of the poll: when things are going badly for a candidate, their supporters tend to stop participating in polls. For example, after the release of the Access Hollywood video, Trump supporters were four percent less likely than Clinton supporters to participate in our poll. The same phenomenon occurred this weekend for Clinton supporters after the announcement of the FBI investigation: Clinton supporters responded at a three percent lower rate than Trump supporters (who could finally take a survey about a subject they liked).

Clinton will carry Michigan by a landslide. Michigan has not voted Republican in a Presidential race since 1988. EOS It was reading the Bible at 15 that turned me agnostic. I’ve read it at leSt twice since then– no change. I have no ideology– neither atheist nor Christian. I still read the Bible because I love some parts and I like the metaphorical use of language, especially in King James. I read a decent amount of religious texts of all stripes. I was really interested in Buddhism for a bit, but that’s more philosophy than religion. I really like not knowing things. I find great spiritual engagement and freedom in questioning and no knowing. I tried to coin the phrase ecstatic agnostic but then I googled it and HLMencken got there first. I guess questioning is a great spiritual practice for cranky people.
I became an atheist at 14. Didn’t want any part of the church. Thought the Bible was wrong because an isolated passage didn’t seem to apply to a specific incident in my life. But it was my interpretation that was in error.
I also studied a bit of Buddhism. It made life seem meaningless and didn’t offer me any answers. Merely to accept whatever and anything goes. Tried meditation but kept falling asleep.
But then I met someone who had such a faith that I had never seen before. God was real and active in this person’s life and I needed to know what made the difference. This person instructed me to read the Bible as if it were true. Claim the promises as if they were specifically addressed to me and thank God for each one.
Even someone like me who had rejected the possibility of a God, and had placed all my hopes on science having all the answers, was profoundly impacted by studying the Bible with the small chance that it could contain some truths. I read the entire book in a year, and studied every week with this person of great faith who patiently explained all the obscure parts and answered even the most derisive questions that I had. And I learned to pray. Not just the bedtime prayers of my childhood that asked for blessings for everyone I knew, but conversations throughout the day with a God who cares and is personally involved. And my life has never been the same.
So I would encourage you not to give up on God, because He never gives up on anyone. Skepticism is not as far removed as obstinate atheism, but God hates the lukewarm. Ask God for a radical change and He will do it. But you have to take the first step. You can’t steer a boat that is not on the water.
I’m glad your God works for you EOS. I have seen faith in different religions serve their practitioners very well. I do not think faith is in anyway inherently a bad thing. Or organized religion. I even can imagine the possibility of more than this existence. Because I don’t know!!! My not knowing works really well for me. I only ask that you keep your faith out of my politics, away from my body and away from other people’s ability to worship as they choose. Thanks!

I don’t know shit about polling or statistics, but I found this and a few other sites a counterbalance to 538’s super cautionary approach. A lot of people seem to believe the overweight swings. Princeton seems to think HRC is in ok shape nationally thought tighter here in MI than many sites show. And crucially the chances of a dem majority senate is now 50/50.

No gun was found, but the Trump campaign is claiming that The Great Holy Prophet Trump was in “grave danger” and accuses the media of inciting what amounts to an assassination plot.

It just shows that it doesn’t matter what happened. The goal is to make one’s candidate appear as a victim to rally support. Sanders attempted the same thing.
Clinton, at no time in this campaign, has made herself appear to be a victim. I think she deserves a lot of credit for that. She could easily do it, but hasn’t.

No, voting boards don’t investigate citizenship and have no authority to turn over names to any other department.

I agree that this was poorly worded, but it being a conspiracy is a real stretch. Where in this video did he say anything at all about Hillary Clinton? Maybe I didn’t make it that far, but implying this is required to obtain a Clinton win is fantastical.
Worse yet, there is no context here. Given that this snippet of an interview appears on Fox News, we should be skeptical of what the rest of the answer was.
Moreover, the pictures of Obama with black people spliced in at the end, and him shaking hands with prisoners is disturbing, not because he is with black people or prisoners, but because it has nothing at all to do with the content of the video.

“Because when God humbles someone, obviously it’s so that the grace of God can perform an operation that produces the character of Christ,” he explained. “By humbling him, he is more qualified as a candidate than anyone else.”

If you watch the full video of the Trump rally in which the protester was assaulted because someone yelled gun,’ you will see the secret service just pummel the guy. I mean you can see the SS guys whole body rise with elbow cocked and the he fall into the blow with the hit in the ground. But the part I was sure would get clipped and go viral (but hasn’t to my knowledge) is Trump, when he returns, telling g the crowd that if the SS had not been there, the vets in the audience ‘would have really let that guy have it. I mean it would be a done deal. Because we have the best people, the greatest people ever.’ And the crowd screams.
It was unbelievable. The theory is that Trump has actually developed this whole fascist persona from his normal narcissism because he plays to the audience. And what they love is the bully. His audience may be leading him to this violent bigoted place rather than visa versa.
Of course a lot of my friends on the left think insulting every republican is good sport. And disruptive violence for the cause is legitimate. So it’s not just a right wing thing. The tendency to ideological allegiance and moral certainty is the new nationalism. And makes the new Autocrat. He passes X Linus test, people love him, he has a vision that people respond to — no more scrutiny needed. I don’t like it on the left or the right. Maybe we should be grateful Trump took the righteous paranoid scapegoating good/bad belligerence thing to its logical conclusion, so we might actually learn… nah… let’s just hope he doesn’t win.

I think that what you are missing here is that EOS might not actually believe some of the bullshit she spreads, rather, she spreads is in order to validate her chosen political point of view.
Whether she “believes” the world is 4,000 years old or not is irrelevant. It is what is required of the belief system she has chosen.
EOS, in this regard, is hardly unique. This phenomenon can be see across the political spectrum. Someone once said that politics is not so much about ideology or even policy, but rather identity. Being told that put a lot in perspective, as to why people will uncritically get behind a candidate, despite obvious shortfalls.
Sanders’ bid for the primary was an excellent example. Simple observations that his “policy suggestions,” which were simple populist statements at best, lacked a plan to implement or pay for them were met with hostility. A bizarre report from a “creative economist” from Amherst claiming that a Sanders’ presidency would result in double digit growth was treated as fact, despite the utter absurdity of the claim.
It is a sad, sad state of affairs, where politics is simply football. Either you are with one team or another and the only goal is to simply win. What comes after, is irrelevant.

I haven’t really ever understood why so many religious people just dismiss all of the scientific evidence of such things. I certainly know a LOT of people who are very religious who manage to accept science and still have belief so I know that it isn’t a requirement of faith to dismiss more concrete provably phenomenon. Jesuits are a good example. They LOVE science or at least the ones I have met have. They certainly do a good job teaching the sciences at UofD anyways.

There is a lot of scientific evidence that the earth is old. It may be that there was apparent age at the time the earth was formed. There is also a lot of scientific evidence that the earth is relatively young. There is no current scientific theory to explain the young earth data, but I concede one day they may have conclusive proof. Either way, it doesn’t impact my faith. It just drives the Loser crazy. But science and the Bible both agree that the universe was created at a specific time, by a non-natural force, external to the known universe.
I liked EOS better when she was talking about the earth being 6,000 years old. It was also fun when she was advocating for installing cameras to spy on poor people and devising ways for police to crack down on black people while avoiding charges of racial bias.
The current EOS simply regurgitates common conservative talking points.

The cameras that will be installed for this pilot project are the same type currently used within the city limits of Ypsilanti on Eastern’s campus. They might deter some crime, and if their use results in arrests, they would definitely stop repeat offenses.
Just wait a couple of weeks until you hear the Mayor’s plans for how he’s going to pay for police in the city. He wants a special assessment on top of the state maximum tax rate. Go ahead, keep spending more and taxing more and see where that gets you. Maybe you’ll win the race with Detroit to see how quickly businesses and residents flee.”
