Sick at home, watching The Towering Inferno

Since Arlo and I started watching old episodes of Lost in Space before going to bed each night, I’ve become obsessed with the show’s creator, Irwin “The Master of Disaster” Allen, and, today, as I was home sick from work with a nasty stomach bug, I got to indulge this growing fascination of mine by watching Paul Newman, William Holden, Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen fighting for their lives in The Towering Inferno. I’ll write more when I’m feeling better, but, here, in the meantime, is the trailer from 1974.

I’ve been sick at home, too. Feel better :)

The Towering Inferno had a lasting effect on me. Somehow, I saw it around the same time that I saw the episodes of the Waltons where their house burns down. Naturally, I became convinced that our house would burn down, as well. I also was really upset when the lady SPOILER ALERT falls out of the elevator after working so hard to save those kids.

I debated whether or not to invite Clementine in to watch it with me when she got home from school, as I remember watching it for the first time when I was about her age. I decided against it, though, when it occurred to me that, one of these days, we may have to take an elevator in a tall building.

And, yeah, I’d totally forgotten that the nice woman who saved the kids was the one who fell to her death when the explosion knocked the elevator from its track. (At least Fred Astaire got her cat.)

I hope you feel well too.

I loved the “your new girlfriend is dead, here’s her cat” scene. OJ really sold it.

The son in law reminds me of Beal.
