Tony Morgan, Matt Jones, the identity of Ypsi, and much more on this weekend’s episode of the Saturday Six Pack

How do I stay so skinny eating 50 pancakes a day? Easy, I keep having my head moved to different bodies! And you can too. Just get a job as on-air talent at an AM radio station with a world class graphic design department… For more life lessons like this one, be sure to tune in this weekend to The Saturday Six Pack with Mark Maynard on Ypsilanti’s AM 1700.

I don’t want to give too much away, but here are just a few of the things that we’ve got planned for this Saturday evening’s show.

We’ll start the show by welcoming Kelli Harden-Klenotic from New Holland Brewing, who will be dropping by this week’s six pack. For those of you who would like to drink along at home, the beer of choice will be their White Hatter Belgian-style white pale ale. [Thank you to New Holland for being the first Michigan brewery to recognize the power of The Saturday Six Pack.]

Once the beers have been opened, we’ll settle in with local activist Anthony Morgan, who has been incredibly active over the past year in the campaign to draw people’s attention to the threats faced by people of color at the hands of police officers in America. We’ll talk about the current state of our community, how things have changed since the killings of Aura Rosser, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner, and the opportunities that exist to make progress in 2015… And I’m sure we’ll talk about things like music and education as well, as those are also things that Tony is passionate about.

Then, at 6:30, we’ll welcome Kayj Michelle from Ypsilanti First Fridays, who will, I’m sure, be talking about the successful launch of this year’s art-walk season. [For details on Friday night’s festivities, click here.] According to Kayj, we’ll also be handing out some pro-Ypsi buttons that came into being after the County suggested that we close our Ypsi Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and allow Ann Arbor’s CVB to market our community. The buttons, from what I’m told, will say: “Ypsilanti, not East Ann Arbor”.

And, at 7:00, we’ll be talking with Jim Cherewick and Chris Sandon about their recent tour down south. [Chris will be in the studio, in case anyone wants to wait outside for an autograph. We’ll be calling Jim at work, though, as he couldn’t get the night off.] I’m not certain what we’ll hear during this segment, but I’m hopeful that they kept their promise and got some audio of people in places like Athens, Georgia answering questions about Ypsilanti and sharing stories about beer.

Then, at 7:15, we’ll welcome in Civil War enthusiast turned celebrated musician, Matt Jones, who will be regaling us with the stories of institutionalized Civil War veterans between songs of love and loss… And, of course, we’ll be asking him about his most recent project, which involves dragging every musician in Michigan into his basement and forcing them to give him one song, recorded in one take, for his audio time capsule. [He’s now got over 75 tracks.] And, it’s kind of a long shot, but it’s possible that Matt and I might also be writing a song in the studio, with your input, for the compilation… so start thinking up some good rhymes and clever hooks.

If you’d like to tell your friends about the show, feel free to share the Facebook event listing. As of right now, it looks as though only a dozen people are planning to listen, so, if you don’t like crowds, this may be a good one to tune in to.

Unless you live really close by, I’d recommend streaming the show online, which you can do either on the AM1700 website or by way of TuneIn.com.

And for those of you who aren’t yet familiar with the show, and need to get caught up, you can listen to the entire archive on iTunes.

One last thing. We love phone calls. So please scratch this number into the cinder block wall of the recreation room of whichever facility you’ve been assigned to… 734.217.8624… and call us between 6:00 and 8:00 this Saturday evening.

Oh, and if you don’t live close enough to the studio to pick us up on the radio, and you don’t have access to a computer, I’m told that, again this week, the folks at 826michigan will be hosting a listening party at their downtown Ann Arbor Robot Supply Store. So, if you can’t hear it any other way, or you’re just curious as to what Annarbourites look like when they listen to the radio together, head over to Liberty Street and pound on the door until they let you in.

I thought the stack of pancakes was a giant penis springing up from your lap.

If you’re looking for something less heavy to discuss with Anthony, ask him about the “Freshest of the Bunch” Variety Show he did at the library.

Does anyone know which stores in Ypsi carry New Holland beer? I want to support the people who support the show I support. I am supportive like that.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get the stream to work where I was so I will have to listen to the podcast. I will say, however, that although I wasn’t listening in, I still really enjoyed the New Holland Oatmeal Stout I bought to go along with it. :)
