This coming Saturday’s show, assuming everyone shows up, should be pretty awesome. We’ll start out by talking with Zingerman’s co-fouder Paul Saginaw, who, if I’m not mistaken, will be our first guest to have been designated a “Champion of Change” by the Obama White House. Among other things, I’m sure we’ll discuss Paul’s efforts to raise the minimum wage, the importance of employee ownership and his thoughts on the future of the ever-expanding Zingerman’s empire, which, if I’m not mistaken, now employs more Ypsilantians than any other business that’s not either a hospital or a university.

Toward the end of Paul’s visit, we’ll be visited by former Zingerman’s employee, and Ypsilantian of the Year, Bee Roll, the owner of Beezy’s, who will be dropping by to fill us in the progress of her recently launched ZipCap campaign. (For those of you not following Bee on Facebook, she’s essentially looking for 100 customers to pledge to spend a certain amount of money at Beezy’s over the next year. With 100 members, she’ll then be able to secure a decent line of credit, so that she’ll never again have to go to predatory lenders when she’s in need of capital.) If I’m not mistaken, Bee will be joined by Evan Malter, the guy who started ZipCap.
Speaking of Beezy’s, if you’re planning to eat there on Friday or Saturday evening, remember they’re running a two-for-one special on breakfast items and sandwiches between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM… And, if you eat there on Saturday night, be sure to get a seat by the window, so you can look right across the street, into the studio where we broadcast The Saturday Six Pack from.
Then, at 7:00, we’ll bring back our favorite Ypsi bar manager, Brigid Mooney, who will be introducing us to one of her funnier regulars at the Wurst Bar.
And, after our Meet-A-Regular segment, we’ll be joined by Stef Chura, who will be playing a few songs and chatting for a while.
And, after that, two local teens, Lily and Chloe Gates, will be taking calls for a segment we’re calling Ask-A-Teen, during which you’ll be encouraged to call in with questions about teens today, what they’re thinking, and what they do for fun in Ypsilanti. And, for those of you who are parents, I’m told that the girls will also be offering advice as to how you might better communicate with your own kids. (Their mom, Brooke Gates, will be in the studio as well, in case you might also have questions for her.)
And, of course, our intrepid downtown reporter Chris Sandon will be out on the street, looking for action throughout the show, and chasing down any breaking news leads you might call in with. (Chris is brought to us, as always, by a generous grant from FaceThruster Foundation.)
One last thing… If you don’t live close enough to the studio to pick us up on the radio, and you don’t have access to a computer, I’m told that, again this week, the folks at 826michigan will be hosting a listening party at their downtown Ann Arbor Robot Supply Store. Hey, if you ever want to do an ask-a-teacher segment, you know who to call. Also, I still have homemade mead to feed you. And we just tapped the cider and it’s not bad….

As for accepting the homemade mead of my listeners, Patti, I don’t want to set a precedent. I mean, I love you, and I’m sure your mead is awesome, but nothing scares me more than people coming in with drinks they’ve made themselves. But, yes, I’d like to have you on. We’ll work it out.
I cannot listen or call in on Saturday. If you could ask the Chloe and Lilly how to get my daughter to clean her room, though, I’d appreciate it. I’ll listen to the podcast.
Paul is not your first guest to have been recognized by the President. Collin Moorhouse was at the last State of the Union, sitting next to Michelle Obama. I remember distinctly when the President noted Ypsilanti Underground in the part of the speech about the importance of zine culture and the camera cut to Colin and The First Lady laughing as they worked on the layout of issue five.
You might want to run it by their mother first, but I’d like to know, as the father of a young daughter, if they have advice on how to deal with young men raised during a period of ubiquitous pornography that depicts women as little more than sex objects to be objectified.
I would also like to know from Paul Saginaw if they have made any progress toward their promise to increase employee ownership at Zingerman’s.
insider tip: ask Paul what he was voted as least likely to be in his high school yearbook. Also he has some good stories from his wayward youth.
Hi! I’m Lily and Chloe’s mom Brooke, and I think you both have great questions. I know that both the girls will have opinions on your questions. Kim, I myself, don’t fight the whole clean your room stuff, they have to live in their filth, I just close the door and move on, but they might have some good advice for you. As for the other question, I will let Mark decide if he wants to ask it, but if he does, they each have a pretty open and understanding opinion on the issue.
