A week or so ago, I was at the Tap Room with Ypsilanti Councilman Brian Robb and Wurst Bar owner Jesse Kranyak, when it occurred to me that the small AM radio station owned by said Councilman was just 100 yards or so away. “Let’s finish these beers,” I said, “and continue our conversation over there, on the air.” Well, they liked the idea, and we made our way over to the station, where I shared the call-in number over Facebook. Within a few minutes, the phone was ringing. The first call was from Kenya. It was my old friend Pete Larson. We talked about bacterial infections in livestock, he played a few metal riffs on his guitar, and we were off. The next call was from Robert Helms, the editor of Guinea Pig Zero, who’d called in to talk about Thomas Paine, and the fact that there wasn’t a statue of the great American revolutionary on public display in all of Philadelphia. Everything was kind of an ugly, drunken mess, but it got me thinking that there might be some potential in the format. (And, to be honest, it also occurred to me that hosting a radio show would probably be a hell of a lot easier than writing a blog.) So, after we went off the air, Brian and I talked about the possibility of my having a show.
Here, before we get into that, though, is the audio of Brian, Jesse and me on 1700 AM the other day, taking calls and discussing the merits of cheap beer.
Here’s the idea as I’m seeing it now. It would be a freeform show called “The Saturday Six Pack.” The concept is super simple. I walk into the studio at a given time every week for a certain number of weeks, with a six pack, and I have a show. If I want, I can lock the door, and drink the whole thing by myself over the course of a few hours. Or, I can invite people in, sharing my beers, in which case the show would be considerably shorter… When the beer is gone, the show is over.
I don’t know how good the sound would be, but the space is big enough that I could also have the occasional musical guest, if I wanted. Or I could just read the newspaper aloud. Or, if I wanted, I just drink quietly and mutter about the people walking by. Maybe I could even go out and interview the folks walking in and out of the strip club next door. To be honest, I’m not too terribly concerned about it. If I’ve got a six pack and an open mic, I’m pretty sure I can make something happen.
So, if I were to do this, would you call in? And, if so, what would you wan to talk about?
I still need to work things out with Brian, but I’m thinking that Saturday at 6:00 would work, and I’ve already gotten permission from my family to try it for four weeks. So, stay tuned, and keep you eye out for posters… I’m thinking that it could be fun.
[note: For those of you who may have missed the reference, the image at top of the post is from the Elia Kazan film A Face in the Crowd, in which Andy Griffith plays a hate-filled, narcissistic drifter who rises to national prominence after being given a slot on a small town radio station, where he passes himself off as a plain spoken man of the people. We watch as a demagogue is born, his sphere of influence growing as he moves to increasingly larger markets, spinning folksy tales and dispensing simple, down-home wisdom, all while amassing political power. Simply put, it’s the story of fascism… Happily, people find out what he’s all about (thanks to a microphone that’s left on), and his power evaporates… So, yeah, I’m going into this fully aware of how it might all end up for me.]

Yes. A random science factoid.
Interesting.
Mark, Even dead air would be better than the tons of right wing nut job radio we get from WAAM. It would be great to see you take an IQ test against the hosts of “Abolitionists Round Table”, which is the funniest and most horrifying radio show I’ve ever heard. I’d love to hear you open with Nancy Adams “Ypsilanti” and Lee Osler’s “Going Back to Ypsilanti”. Also, Have on “Safety Girl”. She could talk about her difficulties in running a business in Ann Arbor.
Encourage people to dress up in crazy costumes outside the station window like on Lets Make A Deal if they want to be asked in for a free beer.
Political roundtable with Mike Eller and Thom Elliott.
Local bands covering your own Monkey Power songs.
An “ask a strip club patron” segment.
Get Pete to perform Iron Lung in the studio.

No local political roundtable would be complete without Thayrone X (WAAM).
As for other things to do, how about ordering food from local restaurants and eating it live? I’d like to hear you eat something from Smarty Catz.
The 6-pack would have to be Pabst Blue Ribbon. Nothing else would do.
This is a straight forward cash grab on the part of Mark Maynard and I am wholeheartedly in favor of it. This is all about generating advertising revenue. Whatever kind of beer Mark is drinking, know that it comes from the brewery that paid the most. If Mark talks about DejaVu, know that they paid something. Every word coming from his mouth will be bought and paid for. This is as it should be.
The sponsor will be Vitajex, of course.

I’m a little worried about the six-pack. Didn’t the doctor just tell you to slim down and take better care of yourself?
He said he would share the beers, Doug.
I suspect he’ll give them all away, though, and just eat carrots while doing jumping jacks.
“POWER! He loved it! He took it raw in big gulpfuls…he liked the taste, the way it mixed with the bourbon and the sin in his blood!” – A Face in the Crowd
The first show is booked. It will be this Saturday at 6:00.
no offense, but all you guys have voices for blogging. i made it through 21 minutes. kinda felt like i’d been kidnapped by adolescent boys and held hostage in their clubhouse. i think that’s what you were going for though. it made me wanna shop and get my nails done, maybe breastfeed, iron my husband’s shirts, cook dinner and do the dishes. etc. i think there’s definitely an audience for it. i don’t think this is necessarily a good thing but probably a true thing.
if you interview Brackache or Ol’ East Cross I’ll tune in again. whatever happened to those guys?
KJC, I wouldn’t draw too many conclusions from that broadcast. As I mentioned, that was just spur of the moment nonsense. The real thing may not be any better, but I suspect it will be different. And, yeah, Ol’ East Cross is still around and I’m sure he’ll drop by.
Radio is dead, stick with the blog.
Brigid Mooney got word to me that she’d like to have me dedicate time during each show for “shy people of comedy.” I said we’d put it to a vote around 7:00 Saturday. So, if you want to weigh in, give us a call around then and have your opinion heard.
Also, I’m not getting rid of the blog. Sorry if I gave that impression. This is just a one day a week thing for a month or so, and it’ll be recorded and put on the blog. It’s just one more thing for me to obsess about and keep me from doing all of the other things in my life that need to get done… Also, as I said, I won’t be drinking all of the beer. I will be sharing them. Do not worry about my health.
i will call in after i get drunk enough
Maybe you could have a rotating stable of guest hosts.
Ok, I will listen to this. It sounds fun.
Is it possible to teach aerobics over the radio? I’m thinking that an exercise segment might be good.
I am listening to the audio clip now. Its great. I would love to listen to the show on saturdays. When does it start?
The first episode will air this Saturday at 6:00 PM, and there’s now a Facebook event page where you will find the call-in number, etc.

I just listened to the show and it was absolutely terrible.
That being said, it was probably the best radio show I have heard in years.
