Fabulous Contraptions begins today in Ypsilanti

Remember how, a couple of months ago, I was telling you that the Ann Arbor Awesome Foundation had awarded $1,000 to FLY Children’s Art Center so that they could launch a free, community-wide event series called Fabulous Contraptions? Well, it begins tonight at the FLY Creativity Lab (40 North Huron). You’ll find all the details in the flyer below, but tonight’s free kick-off event will have kids making simple, crank-driven machines from scavenged cardboard.

And Fabulous Contraptions is just one of about a dozen arts-related things going on in Ypsi this evening. In addition to all the normal First Fridays activities, there’s a new a multimedia art exhibition opening at the Riverside Off Center gallery called Temp, which features the work of several of our best local artists. And Art Around Town, a cool new youth entrepreneurship initiative from the B-Side, is launching as well. So, if you’ve been wanting to come out and spend some time in Ypsi, tonight might be the night to do it.

It’s almost like, for this one night, Ypsi’s a real city.

Why is it that when I suggest that kids be allowed to operate machines in factories, people get mad at me , but when artists have kids build machines, it’s applauded?
