Escape to Beaver Island

I’m sorry for running off and leaving you these past few days, but I needed a break. Clementine and I, desperate for a little father-daughter time away from the hassle of everyday life, headed north to Beaver Island, where we crashed with some old friends. And, for the first time in over a decade, I decided to leave my laptop behind… I’m sure that a more detailed post will follow, but, in the meantime, here are a few of my favorite photos. I hope they find you as well and happy as I am.

God, I don’t know how you do it. You are a modern day Walter Reuther.
Thanks for the great labor day post.

Not realizing that this was the weekend of the Chicago Marathon, Linette and I decided to pack up the family and head to the Windy City for the weekend.

His vacation took place before Labor Day, and, to my knowledge, Walter Reuther also took vacations. I’m not sure what your point is. Are you angry that, over a two year period, he spent weekends in Chicago, Milwaukee, Savannah and Beaver Island? Does that somehow discredit his work?

Hey Edward, I understand that you have a little man-love with Mark, but when you extend 10 months out to two years to make your point, you fail. Besides the fact that I am not even mentioning other travels within this 10 month period.
And no, it does not discredit his other work(?).
I do have a point though. Guess again.

You do take too much time off work, Mark.

You people are fucking hilarious. I took one full week off this entire summer, and I went to visit my parents in Georgia. The other things were long weekends. I’m not familiar with Reuther’s vacation schedule. I suspect you’re right, though, and he never stepped foot in Milwaukee or Chicago… I know I don’t owe you an explanation, but I find this funny. It’s like when people make fun of Al Gore for living in a big house, as though that invalidates all of his other work relative to global warming. Only, in my case, the issue seems to be long weekends crashing with friends within a six hour drive of my home… You make it sound like I’m jetting from the Hamptons to Ibiza. I like that idea, though. It would be funny if I only spent a handful of days a year in Ypsi, and just faked all of this for fame and profit… If you want to start that rumor, it’s fine with me…

By “you people” I assume you mean me.? I’m sincerely happy that you still have both parents to visit, that has nothing to with this discussion, other than you are much luckier than me.
But what is worthy of discussion is a progressive liberal who seemingly has it all decrying for a much needed break. Do you really think there is anyone reading this blog that wants to hear about your sandy dune times in T.C.
No, I don’t think you’re a 1%er or even an Al Gorite, so quit acting like it.

    Mark,
Looks like you had a great weekend with your daughter. I always intended to travel once a year with each of my kids, just one on one, but never did it, and it’s something I regret. F anyone who gives you grief, you are doing a good thing. I’m sure my relationships with my kids would have been even better with some solo bonding time.

    Three comments in order:

Mark Lee: “The sand blobs are beautiful!”

Wire Less: “This is my favorite post ever.”

Dragon: “Do you really think there is anyone reading this blog that wants to hear about your sandy dune times?”

Apparently the answer to your question is yes.

Walter Reuther fights to get paid vacations for American workers. 50 years later Mark Maynard is criticized for being un-Reuther-like. His crime? Taking a vacation. Thank you, internet. You never fail to amuse.

Dragon, when I said “all of you” I was referring to you and Pete. Maybe I should have said “both of you”. I’m sorry if you found that confusing…. As for suggestion that I couldn’t possibly work hard enough to “need a break”, with all due respect, you have no idea what you’re talking about. You may not like what I do, but I bust my ass from 6:00 AM to midnight every day. Sure, it’s been several years since I worked a shitty job for minimum wage, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t work hard. And, as someone else pointed out, Reuther, whose name you evoked in your first comment, fought for paid vacations. There’s nothing wrong with vacations. People should have more of them. So, don’t be pissed at me because I got to take a few days off. Be mad at the system that won’t let you do the same thing. I get your anger. But it’s misguided.
