Alison Lundergan Grimes, coming out swinging against Bitch McConnell

Having been born in Kentucky, and still having quite a lot of family there, I make it a point to keep up on Bluegrass State politics to some extent. And, I was incredibly disappointed, some months ago, to learn that I wouldn’t have an opportunity to go door-to-door in my parents’ neighborhood, explaining to their conservative neighbors why even Ashley Judd would be a better choice to represent them in the Senate than the criminally obstructionist Mitch McConnell. (McConnell, it would seem forced Judd from the race after making it know that the election would largely center on her well-documented battles with depression and views on Christianity.) Well, it looks as though Kentucky Secretary of State, Alison Lundergan Grimes, is now officially stepping into the ring, with Judd’s support, to take on the rich and powerful Senate Minority Leader. Here she is speaking about her candidacy, and why she’s running, in a video released yesterday.

The whole thing is a little too saccharine, and the music is a bit too overwhelming for my taste, but I suspect it might be the right note to hit with the voters of Kentucky. In spite of a less than stellar campaign launch earlier this month, my sense is that Grimes knows what she’s doing. Her father is a former Kentucky Democratic Party chairman, and she won the Secretary of State primary by a double digit margin against the incumbent, then went on to beat her Republican challenger in the general election by 10%, which, for a Democrat in Kentucky, is pretty remarkable.

And, as if all that weren’t enough, her grandmother pretty much calls McConnell a “bitch” in the ad above… which pretty much says to me that Grimes is ready for the fight.

According to Republican polling, Grimes is currently trailing McConnell by 8 points, with 12 percent undecided, but I suspect that will narrow sharply, as the women of Kentucky realize they have a viable alternative to McConnell, who voted against the Violence Against Women Act, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and any number of other bills intended to improve the condition of American women… But, I’m sure McConnell and his corporate sponsors still have a few tricks up their sleeves, which is why I’m about to ask that you open your billfolds and purses, and give Grimes a little cash.

Please join me in supporting Grimes, and helping the Democrats pick up another seat in the Senate… Donate now.

I’d wondered why Grimes stopped touring. Now I guess I know why.

There are some that think it was Grimes, and not McConnell, that forced Judd from the race.

Speaking of Kentucky, did you happen to see this?

Supporters and opponents of the Next Generation Science Standards sparred during hearings in Kentucky last week, as critics took issue with the standards’ teaching of evolution and climate change.

The new standards were developed with input from officials in 26 states –- including Kentucky –- and are part of an effort to make science curricula more uniform across the country. While supporters feel the standards will help beat back scientific ignorance, some religious groups take issue because the standards treat evolution as fact and talk about the human role in climate change.

The Kentucky Board of Education adopted the standards in June and held hearings to get public feedback on the standards last week before they were presented to the state legislature for official approval.

Matt Singleton, a Baptist minister, is one of the opponents who spoke to the board about why the standards should not be adopted, according to The Courier-Journal. “Outsiders are telling public school families that we must follow the rich man’s elitist religion of evolution, that we no longer have what the Kentucky Constitution says is the right to worship almighty God,” Singleton said. “Instead, this fascist method teaches that our children are the property of the state.”

Another opponent, Dena Stewart-Gore, suggested that the standards will make religious students feel ostracized. “The way socialism works is it takes anybody that doesn’t fit the mold and discards them,” she said, per the The Courier-Journal. “We are even talking genocide and murder here, folks.”

I think she really has a chance, mostly because it looks like the voters may be in another ‘throw-the-bums-out’ mood on election day. McConnell’s campaign is going to have to go very negative and early. I think that is why Grimes’ campaign is doing the cheesy thing. It’s an attempt to set her up for sympathy support when she starts getting ruthlessly attacked. McConnell’s campaign is going to have to set up a phoney third party like the swift-boaters of 2004. It has to look like McConnell didn’t approve the attacks.

McConnell will have plenty of time to campaign, since he’s essentially not doing anything else. He might shoot himself in the foot if he’s not careful. I am sure he overestimates himself as a politician, though he is pretty skilled at playing the game. He’s a coot, and coots say stupid shit they don’t realize is stupid.

Kentucky voters want McConnell out of office:

New poll numbers released Thursday suggested that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is entering his reelection campaign next year facing two perilous obstacles: an electorate that wants him out of office and a viable Democratic challenger.

The latest survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling — conducted on behalf of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) and Democracy For America and provided in advance to TPM — found Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, who launched her Senate campaign on Tuesday, drawing the support of 45 percent of Bluegrass State voters and narrowly edging McConnell by a single point. Eleven percent of voters said they are undecided. The two liberal groups to commission the poll are both opposed to McConnell.

A slight majority of Kentucky voters — 51 percent — disapprove of the job McConnell is doing, giving the GOP leader an approval rating of 40 percent. PPP has previously identified McConnell as the least popular senator in the country, but the latest poll marks a marginal improvement It marks for a marginal bump since April, when McConnell nursed a 36 percent approval rating. PPP polled 1,210 Kentucky voters on those two questions, and the margin of error is 2.8 percent.

Kentucky voters may also be experiencing McConnell fatigue, according to PPP’s latest. When the pollsters asked if McConnell deserved reelection “[a]fter 30 years in the U.S. Senate,” 54 percent said he does not, compared with just 38 percent who said he does deserve another term. The pollster asked 625 voters that question, and it has a margin of error of 3.9 percent.
