The Evens performing at Ypsilanti’s Dreamland Theater

For those of you who showed up to the Dreamland Theater on Friday night, hoping to see Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina performing as The Evens, and couldn’t squeeze in, I recorded a few songs. The quality isn’t great, but my hope is that they at least convey the tone of the show, which was quite sweet and beautiful… Here are the songs, in the order that they were performed.

“King of Kings” from the album The Odds:

“Shelter Two” from the album S/T:

“Blessed Not Lucky” from the album S/T:

I think I chose some pretty good ones. If I had it all to do over again, though, I would have tried to have caught the song “Cut from the Cloth,” from the album Get Evens, which was really incredible… And I really wish I’d gotten footage of their faces when, between songs, everyone in the place just sat quietly for few minutes, listening to their five year old son laughing his ass off behind the stage.

Also, if you didn’t check it out yet, my interview with Ian MacKaye, recorded just before they left D.C. for Yspi, can be found here.

I liked the part at the beginning of the show when he encouraged people to speak up, participate, sing along, etc. I’ll get the quote wrong, but it was something like, “If you’re not a part of this, it’s just us up here playing, it’s just band practice. We’re in this together. We consciously came here to make this happen. You’re a part of this.” More shows should start like that.

I’m not a huge fan of their music, but I loved the show. It was a very nice way to spend a Friday evening, among friends, with much happiness.

[…] If I could only keep one, it would be hard to decide between meeting Ian MacKaye outside of Dreamland Theater, eating at Abe’s Diner at 1:00 AM with Derrick Jensen, or chilling with Boots Riley and The Coup […]
