The Coup… bringing the revolution to Ypsilanti tonight

In preparation for tonight’s big Ozone House fundraiser at Woodruff’s, featuring The Coup, Japanther and Kev Choice, I thought that I’d share this Youtube link, where you can stream The Coup’s entire new album, Sorry to Bother You. If you’re anything like me, I think you’ll find it a great way to start your cold, rainy Sunday morning.

And here, for those of you who don’t feel like following the link, are a few of the individual tracks… As of right now, you have ten hours to learn the lyrics, so you’d better get started.

Magic Clap:

Lyrics:

its like a hotwire, baby,
when we put it together
when the sparks fly
we’ll ignite the future forever
this is the last kiss martin ever gave to coretta
its like a paparazzi picture when i flash my beretta
i got scars on my back
the truth on my tongue
i had the money in my hand when that alarm got rung
we wanna breathe fire and freedom from our lungs
tell homeland security
we are the bomb

hurry up, get in, close the do’
this here the meeting for the overthrow
waitin on that concrete rose to grow
doin lines that aint quotable
countin up all that dough you owe
you aint sposed to know its opposable
we are not disposable
muscle up kid
we got blows to throw
til the folks have risen
there’ll be no decision
we make the motor move
they chauffer driven
right now we can’t shine right like a broken prism
i figured out the 14th is a broke amendment
good evening
tonight we bring to you
worn out streets that’ll sing to you
.45 shells that’ll dance to the beats
stomachs so loud it’ll cancel the speech
checks that vanish if you blink an eye
grace gettin locked in the clink to die
a salary cap on a birth certificate
notarized lies that burst in triplicate
morning prayers for the car to start
a man and a whiskey in a heart-to-heart
hope in a track suit to flash and run
while agony chases with a badge and gun
poetry shouted from the squeal of the bus breaks
hands in the air try to feel for an escape
flash in my eyes like candid snaps
when we slap back it’s the magic clap

The Guillotine:

Lyrics:

Hey, you
We got your war
We’re at the gates
We’re at your door
Hey, you
We got your war
We’re at the gates
We’re at your door

We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run

We wanna thank you for flyin with us
We know you coulda stayed home, just cried and cussed
May all your guns go off if it’s time to bust
May all their tanks have time to rust
They got the armies turnin bullets into gold
They got the hookers turnin tricks in the cold
And everytime the police kicks in the do
An angel gas-brakes-dips in The O
And even if a D-boy flips him a O
It ain’t enough to buy shit anymo
Sleep in the doorway, piss on the floor
Look in the sky wait for missiles to show
It’s finna blow, cuz
They got the TV- we got the truth
They own the judges and we got the proof
We got hella people- they got helicopters
They got the bombs and we got the- we got the

We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run

Don’t talk about, it’s not a show
Be about it, it’s bout to blow
Don’t talk about, it’s not a show
Be about it, it’s bout to blow

I just spit the dope lines
I don’t snort em
Tell the boss to call police to escort him
You don’t write all them lies, you just quote em
Get offline, plug in to this modem
No you can’t out-vote em
The rules are still golden
Only jewels we holdin
is if we guardin our scrotum
If you press your ear to the turf that is stolen
You can hear the sound of limitations explodin
Please, sir, may we have another portion?
We’re children of the beast that dodged the abortion
Neck placed firm tween the floor and their florsheim
We’ll shut your shit down- don’t call it extortion
Caution- we’re coming for your head
So call the feds and get files to shred
Every textbook read said bring you the bread
But guess what we got you instead

We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run

Let’s keep it bangin like a shotgun
We’re in a war before we fought one
Now if you’re tired of workin so they can play-
A common enemy, we got one
Now keep it bangin like a shotgun
We’re in a war before we fought one
Now if you’re tired of workin so they can play-
A common enemy, we got one

Don’t talk about, it’s not a show
Be about it, it’s bout to blow
Don’t talk about, it’s not a show
Be about it, it’s bout to blow

And, if you haven’t read it yet, you’ll find my interview with world-renowned hip-hop provocateur, and frontman of The Coup, Boots Riley, here.

Also, if you can’t make it out tonight, and still want to support the vital work that Ozone House is doing with at-risk youth in our community, you can do so here.

See you tonight… Doors open at 8:00.

I know this is a long shot, but I thought that I’d ask… The Coup made it to town. Everything is going well, but it looks like they’ve got a problem with the generator on their bus. They’re looking for a diesel mechanic who can take a look. If someone out there could volunteer to take a look, I suspect I could score them a few free tickets for the show tonight.

Something for Boots to comment on in Cleveland tonight.

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — With 13 Cleveland police officers firing 137 rounds and killing two people following a chase Thursday night, city leaders are seeking answers and could ask for a civil rights investigation.

Investigators did not find a gun inside the bullet-riddled blue Chevrolet Malibu SS when staff from the Cuyahoga County medical examiner’s office removed the bodies from the car Friday evening.
