8:13 I just talked with Growing Hope’s Amanda Edmonds. She heard from a friend of hers this morning that there was a handwritten sign telling voters at the Huron County Township Hall that state-issued voter ID was mandatory. Amanda called the Department of Justice hotline that I linked to last night, and told them the story. According to Amanda, they were very helpful. They got the state involved, and a call was placed to the local County Clerk’s office, instructing them that, in Michigan, a photo ID is not required… Democracy was saved… Good work, Amanda.
8:19 “Virginia is for Haters.” With 20% of the vote in, CNN is saying, based previous voting patterns, Virginia will likely go to Romney. (He’s presently leading by 15%.) On a happier note, Richard “rape is something that God Intended” Mourdock appears to be down by 4% in the Indiana Senate race… My friend Patty just wrote in to say, “Apparently God intended Richard Mourdock to lose.” (UPDATE: It apparently wasn’t a good night for old male politicians who find it appropriate to make qualifying statements concerning rape. Todd “legitimate rape” Akin was also soundly defeated.)
8:31 Obama, according to CNN, is up by 150,000 votes in Florida with over half the precincts reporting… Obama is also up by 18% in Ohio. Granted, it’s with only 20% of precincts reporting. (UPDATE: Obama, as we know now, won Ohio, and it looks as though he may have eked out a victory in Florida as well.)
8:33 I like my friend Robert’s reality better than that being shared by CNN. According to Robert, Virginia isn’t lost. “Exit polls show Obama winning Virginia, Florida and Ohio. 11:04 Assuming Obama wins, as it looks now as though he will, we need to turn this whole thing around tomorrow, and start mobilizing to push Obama forward on issues like global warming, financial reform, and civil rights. Here, for those of you who don’t remember, is what Van Jones said on this subject at the Netroots Nation conference a few months ago.
…We have to be smart, (Jones) says. We have to support Obama, but we also have to hold his feet to the fire. “We have to be as sophisticated at the machine we’re fighting.” It’s going to be hard, but we have to be twice as passionate as we were in 2008. We have to do two difficult things. We have to reelect the President, and we have to hold him accountable. You need two things to get real change, he says. You have to have a President willing to move, and you have to have a movement that’s willing to move him. We haven’t had both at the same time. Under Bush we had a movement, but he was unwilling to move. And, under Obama, until the Occupy movement came along, we weren’t pushing him. It was the Tea Party that was in the streets. We let them have almost three years. Thankfully, Occupy Wall Street came along and started changing that dynamic.
We have to win two main battles. We have to stop the Tea Party in November, and we have to win the budget battle in December. That, he reminds us, is when the Bush tax cuts expire. That’s also when the Pell grant money runs out for poor kids seeking to go to college. All of the cans that we’ve been kicking down the road need to be addressed in December, and that’s when we’ll have our opportunity for change, assuming we’ve been able to keep Obama in the White House. Regular Americans, he says, have paid our share. It’s time for the rich to pay their share. No more “ham and egg” justice. Asking a chicken for an egg and a pig for his leg, he says, is not equivalent, and we need to keep pretending that it is.
And, he says, we have no excuse this time around. It’s not like when we elected Bush. This time, we know for certain what their wrecking ball agenda is. They paint it red, white and blue, but we know what it is. They want to smash unions, eliminate public education, and roll back clear air and clean water legislation. And they have it in their sights. And, what’s more, they’ve shown a “brutal willingness” to destroy what our communities need to survive. At this point, Jones shares Grover Norquist’s comment about how he wants to shirk government down to the size that he can, “drown it in a bathtub.” We know it all now, and we have no excuse, according to Jones…

11:24 Now that we’ve got the presidential election out of the way, I’m looking through the Washtenaw County results… Happily, it looks as though Gretchen Driskell has defeated Mark Ouimet in her bid to be State Representative, and Carol Kuhnke has defeated Jim Fink, becoming out newest Circuit Court Judge. It’s too early to know for sure, but I’m also hopeful that Connie Marie Kelley, Bridget M. McCormack and Shelia Johnson will succeed in their quest to join the Michigan Supreme Court. They won Washtenaw County handily, but I haven’t heard how they did elsewhere… All in all, I’d say there’s lots of good stuff to be thankful for tonight.

CNN knows Obama’s won Virginia. They’re playing it for the voters in western states. They’re doing the Obama campaign a favor by pretending Romney may win it.
Yes, all the indicators in Virginia show Romney doing about the same now as McCain did. And Obama is doing as well or better than he did in 2008. He has Virginia. Believe me. these people on the networks want ratings and are doing favors by playing as if it were otherwise.

Yes, I predicted the MA Senate seat would be Democratic. I thought Scott Brown might even switch parties to stay in. Nobody who knows anything about demographics and statistics would have given Brown (or any other Republican) any chance of holding that seat in a regular general election.
ABC is reporting Obama up by about 300 votes in Florida. Either way, it’s looking not only too close to call now, but possibly headed for a recount.
I predicted it in 2010. That’s how easy a call that was to make.
It’s funny, I’m watching all the networks and they are all pretending not to know Obama has won Virginia and Ohio. If this were happening in 1996 or earlier, they would have already called both of them, and probably Florida too.
So far, everything seems to be matching the pre-election projections, which point to a solid win for Obama, at least in the Electoral College, with a win margin somewhere in the vicinity of 70 to 100+ electors.
What about Taj, Mi-11?
I need to show you what real exit polling is, and who’s doing it, Mark. Warren has won that MA Senate seat. The exit polls show an easy win for Warren.
It’s way more difficult to get real exit polls for races like Taj’s. No genuine firms pay any attention to it. With that race you’d have to make precinct comparisons to previous years yourself.
Don’t worry about it, Mark. There will be no recount. I promise. Obama will win it, and Romney will not contest it, because Ohio and Virginia seal it anyway.
No word on Taj yet. I’m hoping to hear something soon… It’s a longshot, but I have faith.
There wasn’t enough media coverage on what a nut Taj’s opponent is. I’m sorry, but it isn’t going to happen for Taj. They needed the media to cover it.
Even if Florida does head to a recount, it will just be a question not of whether Obama wins the Electoral College, but of how big his margin is.
Obama wins either 303 or 332 electoral votes, depending on the outcome in Florida.
This bullshit about Ohio and Virginia being too close to call is just PR. They all know from the exit polls that Obama has won those easily. And the exit polls for Florida show Obama winning there also, but I suspect those were manipulated for cover.
North Carolina looks less hopeful if you’re watching the tabulation, but the exit polls show it could go either way. If the Obama campaign can nab it, they should get to 347 electoral votes anonymous.

It’s basically neck and neck for the charter proposal, “Yes” is ahead by 4 votes. We retain our world wide title as the municipality most in favor of marijuana with a nearly 80% yes vote on lowest enforcement. No real indication how far along count is.

They called the race and were interrupted by a sputtering Karl Rove who is contesting Ohio. They are walking around the set and walking backstage to consult management. Losing their shit. Awesome.

The thought of Michele Bachmann and Kerry Bentivolio serving in Congress together makes me want to cry.
I’m disappointed by the blow to collective bargaining rights (Proposition 2) and alternative energy (Proposition 3), but pleased that the Emergency Manager law was defeated, and that Matty Moroun’s bid to protect his bridge monopoly was shot down. I’ll be curious to see how the various factions respond today, and in the weeks to come. All in all, I’d say the results are positive.

Trying to find something to be happy about this morning – it’s hard. I’m not a Republican. I consider myself a conservative and the Republican party abandoned us years ago. Had Romney won, he would have governed only slightly to the right of Obama. I already lost way back in the primaries.
I’m glad the TV ads are over. A few percentage points difference in a couple of states and it could have been a different outcome. We are still a very divided country. Republicans have the House and the Governors – Democrats keep the Senate and Pres. It’s hard to find any middle ground.
There’s no mandate for Obama and he has no experience in reaching across the aisle. At least for the first time in 10 years, he won’t be campaigning. He’s got 4 years to learn how to govern. He’ll need a balanced budget in January and won’t get any cooperation on raising the ceiling again. The stocks are tanking this morning and I’m hoping it’s not a free fall.
They still haven’t finalized the count in Florida, far from Robert’s prediction of having that race called by 9P. I did call the 11th District race, but even NPR did as well.
I’m pretty tired of this blog. Tired of the abuse a person takes for merely expressing a different viewpoint. Tired of having to sift through the vile and disgusting comments. It’s just a fact that, when these things go badly for one side, their “victory” shirts get shipped off to Africa, where no one here at home will see them. It happens every Super Bowl, and it happens in politics. Somewhere, at this very minute, there’s a plane on it’s way into the Congo, full of “Romney Wins!” shirts.

EOS, I didn’t say the idiot mainstream media would call Florida by 9pm. I said the election would be called by 9pm. And actually, I told you Obama won Ohio, Virginia and Florida before 8pm. If you actually followed real sources of news you would have known that. You said you believed things would drag on for weeks. You really don’t have any idea what you’re talking about, and that prediction of yours was just more proof of it.
Obama won Florida. I said that at about 7:30pm yesterday, which is when the Obama and Romney campaigns knew it. CNN and Fox are doing bullshit PR for all you yahoos who don’t know you need to seek sources of news to actually know what is happening. You can’t just sit there waiting to be fed. You of all people here should know that.
EOS, I am amazed at how difficult it seems for you to simply understand what other people are saying. I’m entertained that right wingers are going out of their way to say that stock are “tanking” today, trying to suggest that financial markets are panicking over an Obama re-election.
This is just complete nonsense and indicative of their massively myopic worldview. There”s no evidence at all that markets are “tanking.” It’s a nice talking point, but a little blip one day does not a trend make.

As for your question concerning whether it’s too early to go after Romney for non-payment of taxes, the answer is no. Obama should move immediately to close down off-shore loopholes as soon as possible, and prosecute those who do not come clean and make good on their obligations. We need clear rules that apply evenly to everyone. No more special treatment for the corporate class.

So Robert nailed it on Virginia I guess. Was it just long lines when the polls closed in the DC area that caused the numbers for Fairfax and Prince William counties to come in so late? I was looking at the official numbers all evening and it was definitely clear that Obama would carry VA once those numbers came through. I was really amazed at all the bizarre distortions on the “news.”
In the Michigan legislature, Democrats made significant gains across the state. We unseated four incumbents and picked up another Republican seat in the Thumb where the incumbent lost in the primary. Notably, one of those gains was here in Washtenaw County where Gretchen Driskell unseated Rep. Mark Ouimet in a hard-fought election.
The bottom line is that we’ve gained 5 seats in the House of Representatives, leaving the Republicans with a 59-51 majority. That makes me happy because it means that I’ll have more colleagues that will stand with me in favor of education funding, environmental protection and equal rights.
Hopefully this change will mean a more bi-partisan atmosphere in Lansing, with less time focused on social issues and more talk about how we make our communities attractive for current and future residents. That’s the kind of relentless positive action that’s been missing for the last two years.
I truly feel a little bad for EOS, and think I understand her (him? I’m so confused) a bit more now that he (she?) has left. If _these_ Republicans aren’t conservative enough, life must be a little lonely, and a lot confusing. It makes me think about the quip (and I forget now where I saw it), about the Republican rape guy having lost last night. Which one? you might ask—which should be a huge red flag of how crazy conservative the Republicans have become.
ypsijav, I think agreements were made to hold off on broadcasting the good news for Obama as long as they could. It was done so that states in the Central and Western Time Zones would see what appeared to be a close race, motivating them to get out to vote. Doing so certainly helped secure Nevada and Colorado, and likely helped motivate folks in Ohio and Florida to stay in the long voting lines.
There were also another motivations which most people here would not likely believe or understand.
On another note, I was told that exit polls showed a 49/49 split in North Carolina. It appears the exit poll was deliberately misrepresented or there was enough funny-business in NC to move the final tallies a few percentages. All the other exit polls were dead on, projecting final tallies to within a couple thousand votes, and in some states to within a few hundred.
Noon exit polls nationwide showed Obama was already ahead everywhere he needed to be which was something of a suprise to a lot of people. It was clear Obama had won simply because Democratic turnout usually lags behind Republican turnout. So for Obama to be leading in noon exit polls pretty much meant he had it.
Then as 7pm approached and trends showed Obama was going to win Virginia and Ohio, it was essentially over. Exit polls showed Obama won Florida also.
While Pete, Mark & I were at the Corner we discussed that EOS could be there too. Or EOS could be Pete or me or Mark himself! Or you or you or you or YOU!!! It kind of ended like a Twilight Zone episode with us all shooting each other and the real EOS in a spaceship, laughing.

What’s your take on Dr. Taj losing to “Crazy Kerry”, but Dave Curson winning? It’s sad, but I think it was purely the “Islamic threat” and Dr. taj’s difficulty with communication that cost the seat. I think if Curson had been the candidate for the two year term, we’d have a Dem pickup…
