Election Night 2012… results, interpretation, and celebration

OK, I’ve got my beer and I’m in front of a television… let’s do this, America.

8:13 I just talked with Growing Hope’s Amanda Edmonds. She heard from a friend of hers this morning that there was a handwritten sign telling voters at the Huron County Township Hall that state-issued voter ID was mandatory. Amanda called the Department of Justice hotline that I linked to last night, and told them the story. According to Amanda, they were very helpful. They got the state involved, and a call was placed to the local County Clerk’s office, instructing them that, in Michigan, a photo ID is not required… Democracy was saved… Good work, Amanda.

8:19 “Virginia is for Haters.” With 20% of the vote in, CNN is saying, based previous voting patterns, Virginia will likely go to Romney. (He’s presently leading by 15%.) On a happier note, Richard “rape is something that God Intended” Mourdock appears to be down by 4% in the Indiana Senate race… My friend Patty just wrote in to say, “Apparently God intended Richard Mourdock to lose.” (UPDATE: It apparently wasn’t a good night for old male politicians who find it appropriate to make qualifying statements concerning rape. Todd “legitimate rape” Akin was also soundly defeated.)

8:31 Obama, according to CNN, is up by 150,000 votes in Florida with over half the precincts reporting… Obama is also up by 18% in Ohio. Granted, it’s with only 20% of precincts reporting. (UPDATE: Obama, as we know now, won Ohio, and it looks as though he may have eked out a victory in Florida as well.)

8:33 I like my friend Robert’s reality better than that being shared by CNN. According to Robert, Virginia isn’t lost. “Exit polls show Obama winning Virginia, Florida and Ohio. Also Colorado, Nevada, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Iowa,” says Robert. “Things are surprisingly close in North Carolina. Obama is on course to win 332 to Romney’s 206 in electoral votes. Obama will get as many as 347 if he can get North Carolina, but it may take days to count or weeks to recount.” As we know, though, exit polls don’t always reflect the final result… Remember 2004? (UPDATE: As we know now, CNN was wrong when they said that Virginia would go for Romney, and Robert was right.)

8:46 Speaking of Virginia, CMadler shares the following: Fivethirtyeight.com also suggests that VA may go for Obama. “Just more than three-quarters of the vote has been reported in Chesterfield County, VA, an important suburban and exurban region southwest of Richmond. In the tally so far, Mitt Romney leads President Obama 54 percent to 45 percent. If those percentages hold, Mr. Romney’s performance there would match almost exactly Senator John McCain’s margin of victory in Chesterfield County in 2008: 53 percent to 46 percent. Former President George W. Bush, however, when he carried the state in 2004, won Chesterfield County with 63 percent of the vote.”

8:48 I guess that footage of the electronic voting machine in Pennsylvania that was flipping votes from Obama to Romney was real. It’s being reported that the machine has been removed from the polling place.

9:01 CNN projects Michigan, New York and New Jersey for Obama… Not terribly surprising, all the southern states are going for the white guy, though.

9:05 I’m watching at the Corner Brewery, but I think I’ll stop by Woodruff’s later. I just got word that they’ve switched the TV from The Jersey Shore to CNN. I think that speaks to the importance of this event.

9:07 CNN projects that the Republicans will hold the House of Representatives. Not unexpected, but it still sucks.

9:10 The Washington Post says that Stabenow has won Michigan, beating the detestable Pete Hoekstra.

9:12 We’re looking at a mess in Florida. With over 70% of precincts reporting, we’re almost dead even. Romney, according to CNN, is up by a little over 1,000 votes.

9:15 I hear that Elizabeth Warren has won!

9:22 According to the Washington Post, only 11.5% of precincts are reporting in Massachusetts, so I’m not sure how people are calling Warren the winner…. I’ll keep looking into it… I’ll be totally happy if she wins.

9:30 Romney is now up by only 636 votes in Florida. I’m afraid we may be headed for recount again. Fuck.

9:32 Now Obama is up in Florida, according to CNN. Jesus. I can’t believe this is happening again.

9:40 The AP has retracted their Warren call… I knew it was too good to be true… Keeping my fingers crossed.

9:42 CNN gives Pennsylvania to Obama.

9:43 Now MSNBC is callling it for Warren! If nothing else goes well tonight, at least I have this… Thank you, Massachusetts.

9:51 Free Press headline: “All 5 proposals to amend constitution crushed; emergency manager in dead heat.” Apparently, Prop 2 wasn’t even close. “Proposal 2, which would enshrine collective bargaining in the state constitution, headed for defeat, 61%-39%.” This sucks.

9:58 Welcome back to Congress, Alan Grayson.

10:01 Pete Larson just walked in. He wants me to tell you hello. MM.com regular Teacher Patti is here too. (She did not ask me to say hello.)
http://networkedblogs.com/ErjxO
10:04 CNN gives New Hampshire to Obama… In other news, Tammy Baldwin wins in Wisconsin, becoming the first openly gay Senator in the United States. (By my count, there have been 257 closeted ones.)

10:10 OK, tomorrow, would anyone like to join me in calling local hate radio host Thayrone X while he’s behind the mic at WAAM, and console him? He’s on the air from 3:00 to 6:00, and his call-in number is (734) 822-1600. He’ll likely hang up on me, but I’d like to tell him that angry, old, white men will still play a vital role in our society, in spite of the rising tide of gay, Socialist, black, America-hating Muslims heading to Washington. (He was predicting a big Republican win tonight, as heroic American patriots marched into their polling places to “fire the creep.”) I’d also like to call Victoria “America just died” Jackson and Donald “the world is laughing at us” Trump, but I don’t have their numbers.

10:30 59% of precincts reporting and Obama is up by 2% in Ohio…. Good work, Ohio!

10:37 Brienne Willcock just told me that Kerry Bentivolio is beating Syed Taj 51% to 43%, but that’s only with 23% of precincts reporting. I know it’s an uphill battle, but I’m trying to stay positive.

10:42 My friend Jeff Meyers just observed the following…. “Interesting that all the states where Romney once lived have gone to Obama.”

10:48 Sherrod Brown keeps his Senate seat, representing Ohio… Looks like the far right PACS, like Crossroads GPS, blew that $31 million they spent against him.

11:03 Good work, Wisconsin.

11:04 Assuming Obama wins, as it looks now as though he will, we need to turn this whole thing around tomorrow, and start mobilizing to push Obama forward on issues like global warming, financial reform, and civil rights. Here, for those of you who don’t remember, is what Van Jones said on this subject at the Netroots Nation conference a few months ago.

…We have to be smart, (Jones) says. We have to support Obama, but we also have to hold his feet to the fire. “We have to be as sophisticated at the machine we’re fighting.” It’s going to be hard, but we have to be twice as passionate as we were in 2008. We have to do two difficult things. We have to reelect the President, and we have to hold him accountable. You need two things to get real change, he says. You have to have a President willing to move, and you have to have a movement that’s willing to move him. We haven’t had both at the same time. Under Bush we had a movement, but he was unwilling to move. And, under Obama, until the Occupy movement came along, we weren’t pushing him. It was the Tea Party that was in the streets. We let them have almost three years. Thankfully, Occupy Wall Street came along and started changing that dynamic.

We have to win two main battles. We have to stop the Tea Party in November, and we have to win the budget battle in December. That, he reminds us, is when the Bush tax cuts expire. That’s also when the Pell grant money runs out for poor kids seeking to go to college. All of the cans that we’ve been kicking down the road need to be addressed in December, and that’s when we’ll have our opportunity for change, assuming we’ve been able to keep Obama in the White House. Regular Americans, he says, have paid our share. It’s time for the rich to pay their share. No more “ham and egg” justice. Asking a chicken for an egg and a pig for his leg, he says, is not equivalent, and we need to keep pretending that it is.

And, he says, we have no excuse this time around. It’s not like when we elected Bush. This time, we know for certain what their wrecking ball agenda is. They paint it red, white and blue, but we know what it is. They want to smash unions, eliminate public education, and roll back clear air and clean water legislation. And they have it in their sights. And, what’s more, they’ve shown a “brutal willingness” to destroy what our communities need to survive. At this point, Jones shares Grover Norquist’s comment about how he wants to shirk government down to the size that he can, “drown it in a bathtub.” We know it all now, and we have no excuse, according to Jones…

11:13 Oregon apparently brings the President’s electoral vote count to 256. He just needs 14 more. Ohio could put him over the top.

11:19 CNN calls the race for Obama! Four more years!

11:24 Now that we’ve got the presidential election out of the way, I’m looking through the Washtenaw County results… Happily, it looks as though Gretchen Driskell has defeated Mark Ouimet in her bid to be State Representative, and Carol Kuhnke has defeated Jim Fink, becoming out newest Circuit Court Judge. It’s too early to know for sure, but I’m also hopeful that Connie Marie Kelley, Bridget M. McCormack and Shelia Johnson will succeed in their quest to join the Michigan Supreme Court. They won Washtenaw County handily, but I haven’t heard how they did elsewhere… All in all, I’d say there’s lots of good stuff to be thankful for tonight.

11:33 It was close, but it looks like the Charter Revision proposal lost in Ypsi 50.87% to 49.13%… I guess that means, among other things, we don’t have a Mayor Pierce administration to look forward to.

11:33 I’m kind of shocked that Prop 2 was so close in Washtenaw County. I would have thought that there would be more supporters, given how liberal we like to say that we are. 53.42% of voters in Washtenaw County were against it. I think that’s shameful.

11:39 School consolidation in Ypsi passes with 69.75% support.

11:40 It was close, but it looks like the proposal for the new downtown library in Ann Arbor failed.

11:42 Why isn’t Romney conceding? Doesn’t he know that I need to get home and ransack the kitchen for my daughter’s Halloween candy?

11:44 How much do you want to bet that Obama takes the stage in traditional Kenyan dress, flanked by Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright, and announces, after quoting Saul Alinsky, that gun collection will begin tomorrow, and that all Christians will be sent to work camps, where they’ll be building solar powered abortion equipment?

12:15 Oh, and it feels really good going to sleep knowing that our country isn’t the laughing stock of the free world… Good work, America.

12:35 Can’t stay up any later, waiting for Romney’s concession speech.

6:04 Early-morning update of the Tea Party’s Congressional crazy quotient… All in all, I’d say it’s a wash. Michele “crazy eyes” Bachmann will be returning to represent the people of Minnesota, and she’ll have Kerry “the angry Santa Claus impersonator” Bentivolio at her side, but it looks as though Allen West and Joe Walsh won’t be there to assist them in their nonsense, having been shown the door by the voters of Florida and Illinois respectively. And, on the positive side, we’ll now have Alan Grayson back in the House to keep them in check.

7:20 One closing thought before moving on… Is tomorrow too soon to start a formal investigation into Romney’s non-payment of taxes?

CNN knows Obama’s won Virginia. They’re playing it for the voters in western states. They’re doing the Obama campaign a favor by pretending Romney may win it.

Yes, all the indicators in Virginia show Romney doing about the same now as McCain did. And Obama is doing as well or better than he did in 2008. He has Virginia. Believe me. these people on the networks want ratings and are doing favors by playing as if it were otherwise.

Ohio is Obama’s pretty easily also.

Yes, I predicted the MA Senate seat would be Democratic. I thought Scott Brown might even switch parties to stay in. Nobody who knows anything about demographics and statistics would have given Brown (or any other Republican) any chance of holding that seat in a regular general election.

  21. Posted November 6, 2012 at 9:28 pm | Permalink

So far, everything seems to be matching the pre-election projections, which point to a solid win for Obama, at least in the Electoral College, with a win margin somewhere in the vicinity of 70 to 100+ electors.

Obama wins either 303 or 332 electoral votes, depending on the outcome in Florida.

  30. Robert

This bullshit about Ohio and Virginia being too close to call is just PR. They all know from the exit polls that Obama has won those easily. And the exit polls for Florida show Obama winning there also, but I suspect those were manipulated for cover.

  31. Robert
    Posted November 6, 2012 at 9:41 pm | Permalink

North Carolina looks less hopeful if you’re watching the tabulation, but the exit polls show it could go either way. If the Obama campaign can nab it, they should get to 347 electoral votes anonymous.

“Obama’s victory, at the cost of $2 billion, is about as inspiring as completing a game of Sudoku. Obama was propelled to his narrow electoral college victory by those that the Republicans almost ritually abused: women, blacks, gays and Hispanics. Ironically, these are people that the Obama administration has also ruthlessly strafed for four years. But Obama smiled as he cut the lower-classes adrift in the midsts of a cratering economy, while Romney expressed only contempt for them.” —Jeffrey St. Clair

But a happier thing to picture: the super-dreary Mitch McConnell in the presence of one illustrious Elizabeth Warren. I wonder if he’ll just buckle (and go away) when faced with her fortitude and integrity.

Trying to find something to be happy about this morning – it’s hard. I’m not a Republican. I consider myself a conservative and the Republican party abandoned us years ago. Had Romney won, he would have governed only slightly to the right of Obama. I already lost way back in the primaries.

I’m glad the TV ads are over. A few percentage points difference in a couple of states and it could have been a different outcome. We are still a very divided country. Republicans have the House and the Governors – Democrats keep the Senate and Pres. It’s hard to find any middle ground.

There’s no mandate for Obama and he has no experience in reaching across the aisle. At least for the first time in 10 years, he won’t be campaigning. He’s got 4 years to learn how to govern. He’ll need a balanced budget in January and won’t get any cooperation on raising the ceiling again. The stocks are tanking this morning and I’m hoping it’s not a free fall.

They still haven’t finalized the count in Florida, far from Robert’s prediction of having that race called by 9P. I did call the 11th District race, but even NPR did as well.

I’m pretty tired of this blog. Tired of the abuse a person takes for merely expressing a different viewpoint. Tired of having to sift through the vile and disgusting comments. Think that I might have contributed to drawing more people to this site and wish I hadn’t. I’m outta here. Going to the bunker to wait for Armageddon.

In the Michigan legislature, Democrats made significant gains across the state. We unseated four incumbents and picked up another Republican seat in the Thumb where the incumbent lost in the primary. Notably, one of those gains was here in Washtenaw County where Gretchen Driskell unseated Rep. Mark Ouimet in a hard-fought election.

The bottom line is that we’ve gained 5 seats in the House of Representatives, leaving the Republicans with a 59-51 majority. That makes me happy because it means that I’ll have more colleagues that will stand with me in favor of education funding, environmental protection and equal rights.

Hopefully this change will mean a more bi-partisan atmosphere in Lansing, with less time focused on social issues and more talk about how we make our communities attractive for current and future residents. That’s the kind of relentless positive action that’s been missing for the last two years.

ypsijav, I think agreements were made to hold off on broadcasting the good news for Obama as long as they could. It was done so that states in the Central and Western Time Zones would see what appeared to be a close race, motivating them to get out to vote. Doing so certainly helped secure Nevada and Colorado, and likely helped motivate folks in Ohio and Florida to stay in the long voting lines.

There were also another motivations which most people here would not likely believe or understand.

On another note, I was told that exit polls showed a 49/49 split in North Carolina. It appears the exit poll was deliberately misrepresented or there was enough funny-business in NC to move the final tallies a few percentages. All the other exit polls were dead on, projecting final tallies to within a couple thousand votes, and in some states to within a few hundred.

Noon exit polls nationwide showed Obama was already ahead everywhere he needed to be which was something of a suprise to a lot of people. It was clear Obama had won simply because Democratic turnout usually lags behind Republican turnout. So for Obama to be leading in noon exit polls pretty much meant he had it.

Then as 7pm approached and trends showed Obama was going to win Virginia and Ohio, it was essentially over. Exit polls showed Obama won Florida also.

Phil Power on the possibility of “Right to Work” legislation now that Prop 2 has lost.

Over-reaching is always worse than a sin; it’s an mistake. Despite lots of internal debate within the ranks of organized labor, United Auto Workers President Bob King decided to swing for the fences on Proposal 2. It turned out to be an expensive pop fly, and the pundits are now talking about a big loss for organized labor.

And now, in return, some Republicans and parts of the business community will likely follow suit in over-reaching and go for passage of Right to Work legislation.

“I think Right to Work is just a matter of time now,” said one business executive who has worked to support Snyder’s efforts to keep the Right to Work legislation off the governor’s desk.

The business executive noted, however, there was a significant change attitude in Michigan c-suites this fall as labor pushed Proposal 2. “They are ticked they had to spend big money to fight Proposal 2,” the executive said, suggesting that, as a result, fewer execs will now stand in the way of conservative legislators’ push for Right to Work legislation.

Such a move, though, would provoke a fight to the finish that could badly harm Michigan’s economic recovery.

Right to Work will be the 800-pound elephant in the room for months. If the Legislature winds up passing RTW, Gov. Snyder will be in a box. He will be under tremendous pressure to sign the bill, but the cost – losing his distinctive and important image as a relatively nonpartisan moderate – will be enormous. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see “Right to Work Lite” – affecting public employees only, for example – getting popular in some Lansing circles.
