I’d like to live in a world where Obama could have stared right into Romney’s eyes, channeled a little Samuel L. Jackson, and said “Fuck coal.”

I know I should be writing about Romney’s ridiculous response to the “equal work for equal pay” question, where he essentially said that he didn’t need to pass legislation protecting women’s rights in the American workplace because he hired a bunch of women (or a “folder full” if you will) when he was a Governor, or that part in the debate where Candy Crowley had to fact-check him in real time when he started demagoguing on the recent attack on the U.S. embassy in Libya, but the exchange on coal really stuck in my craw. I know the President has to say that he loves drilling in our public parks and surrendering our mountain tops to strip mining operations, because that’s what stupid people, who can’t accept the fact that gas is expensive because it’s running out, want to hear, but the future is in wind and solar, and we’re losing the race.

Oh, and if you only watch a few minutes of the debate, I’d suggest the very last part, where Obama holds Romney’s Herman Musster-like feet to the fire on that statement he made about how 47% of Americans are worthless freeloaders. Here’s the transcript:

OBAMA: I think a lot of this campaign, maybe over the last four years, has been devoted to this nation that I think government creates jobs, that that somehow is the answer.

That’s not what I believe. I believe that the free enterprise system is the greatest engine of prosperity the world’s ever known.

I believe in self-reliance and individual initiative and risk takers being rewarded. But I also believe that everybody should have a fair shot and everybody should do their fair share and everybody should play by the same rules, because that’s how our economy’s grown. That’s how we built the world’s greatest middle class.

And — and that is part of what’s at stake in this election. There’s a fundamentally different vision about how we move our country forward.

I believe Governor Romney is a good man. Loves his family, cares about his faith. But I also believe that when he said behind closed doors that 47 percent of the country considered themselves victims who refuse personal responsibility, think about who he was talking about.

Folks on Social Security who’ve worked all their lives. Veterans who’ve sacrificed for this country. Students who are out there trying to hopefully advance their own dreams, but also this country’s dreams. Soldiers who are overseas fighting for us right now. People who are working hard every day, paying payroll tax, gas taxes, but don’t make enough income.

And I want to fight for them. That’s what I’ve been doing for the last four years. Because if they succeed, I believe the country succeeds.

When my grandfather fought in World War II and he came back and he got a G.I. Bill and that allowed him to go to college, that wasn’t a handout. That was something that advanced the entire country. And I want to make sure that the next generation has those same opportunities. That’s why I’m asking for your vote and that’s why I’m asking for another four years.

It was two against one with Candy Crowley moderating. Crowley gave Obama 9% more time, repeatedly cut off Romney, and even stepped in and injected her opinion that Obama called the Libya attack an act of terrorism on the day after. Immediately after the debate she Tweeted that Romney was right on this issue. Her hand-picked questions were chosen to give Obama a clear advantage.

With the economy being the number one issue facing voters, even the biased CBS reported in a post debate poll that Romney won on economic issues 65 – 34%. Obama is more eloquent when making promises, but as it was repeatedly pointed out, he has failed to implement nearly all his promises.

You’re just mad that Crowley stopped your candidate from lying about the President’s response to the embassy attack in Libya.

Obama’s “Can you say that again a little louder, Candy” was the highlight of the night.

EOS, I’m still waiting for your response to my question in the thread about Syed Taj. As you’ve stated on several occasions that moderate Muslims do not exist, I’d like to know your explanation for what Mark captured on video. Was it an apparition of some kind? Was is a holographic projection? Was it swamp gas? Or could it be that moderate Muslims do actually exist?

Concerning the exchange on Libya, Romney said that Obama did not call it “terrorism” until 14 days later. That was not true. Obama called it an act of terrorism right after it happened. Romney was wrong to suggest that he hadn’t. What Romney was trying to get at is the fact that, for several days, we didn’t know that the attack was premeditated. We thought, it would seem wrongly, that the uprising was organic, having risen up as a result of the film, Innocence of the Muslims, having been released. That fact that we’re fighting over what terms are used, though, is stupid. This was a horrible event, and it should not have been politicized. Furthermore, it comes across as extremely disingenuous, given the number of U.S. facilities attacked during the Bush administration, none of which received the same attention of Republicans. The fact that Republicans are up in arms over the idea that someone requested more security at this embassy, while they remained silent about Bush having received a security brief entitled “Osama bin Laden determined to strike inside the U.S.” right before 9/11, which led to the death of thousands, is laughable. Plus, as others have noted, the Obama administration requested funding for additional embassy security, and the Republicans voted it down. If this is the best argument you have as to why we should vote for Romney, EOS, you’re losing.

    Mr. X,

Obama made a general statement about terrorism the day after, but at no time did he say that the attack on the embassy was itself a terrorist act.

Politifact: When Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts, he “stood in front of a coal plant and pointed at it and said, ‘This plant kills.’” True.

    Meta,

I’d sure like more details about that plant. Was it a modern plant with all the pollution scrubbers and environmental safeguards in place, or was it built with outdated technology with little anti-pollution equipment in place? From your link, it appears that the plant he was referring to was not up to code.

Read his full statement in context.

    Romney was correct.

Whether “no acts of terror” means “this particular act of terror” or not is truly splitting hairs.

More salient is Romney’s completely insulting assertion that gun violence is the fault of single parent families. I’m sure there’s some study out there that finds a correlation between the two, but the statement was disgusting.

Saying that encouraging people not to divorce would help kids is acceptable. Demonizing hard working parents struggling to raise their kids under challenging circumstances is beyond the pale.

Obama: “We’ve expanded Pell Grants for millions of people. We did it by taking $60 billion that was going to banks and lenders as middlemen for the student loan program, and we said, ‘Let’s just cut out the middleman. Let’s give the money directly to students.” Fact check: True.

Media bias? Jim Lehrer interrupted Obama 5 times and Romney 15 times. Candy Crowley interrupted Obama 9 times and Romney 28 times.

Just a hint. Crying about not getting enough time doesn’t make one look presidential. When you go head to head with Putin, and other world leaders, you don’t get to argue for equal time.

Mitt is all for women’s rights. He allowed the women who worked for him to leave early so that they could get home to make dinner for their husbands.

The worst was the right wing narrative that Stevens had been sodomized and that somehow the Obama admin was negligent in sending him there because he was supposedly gay.

People can certainly have political differences, but that was just disgraceful by any measure.

Notice that nothing came of that nonsense since.

If any local people want to help (in Ypsilanti) get Obama reelected the old-fashioned way, the Obama office at 61 N. Huron is eager for volunteers to sign up to phone bank or canvass–2-hour slots. GOTV! Thank you! (If not local, you can do it at your local office. Also, encourage students. and others, who aren’t registered here but who are registered where they live to call their city clerk and request an absentee ballot, soon. Thank you for that too.)
