As we discussed in January, the tenth anniversary of this site is fast approaching, and I’ve been thinking of constructive, creative ways to mark the occasion… Well, things are finally beginning to take shape, and I have a date for you to enter into your iPhones, carve into your thighs, shave into the fur of your pets, etc. The event will take place at Woodruff’s on the evening of Saturday, September 8. As of right now, I’m only at liberty to tell you that Minus9 will be performing, but I can assure you that the evening will be action packed. (If we play our cards right, I even think that a certain someone could be persuaded to come out of retirement for the night.)
I’ve got a few ideas as to what we could do between bands, but I’d love to hear your thoughts as well… I don’t know if I could persuade any of them to come out, but I’m thinking, for instance, that it would be fun to get some of our more beloved trolls on stage to address the crowd. (A Troll Talent Show, maybe. Wouldn’t it be cool to see EOS singing Bohemian Rhapsody?) Or, if they refuse, maybe we could get a few folks to do dramatic readings of some of their more epic, hate-filled comments. (Do you have favorites to suggest?) And Linette was thinking that it would be fun if people brought interesting items with them, so that we could have a Community Show and Tell, which I think sounds promising. And, while I don’t think I’m qualified to receive the key to the city, I do think that it would be kind of cool if the Mayor would come out, with tears in his eyes, and say something heartfelt and beautiful about how much worse off the city would be without this blog.
Oh, and I’ve decided that, whatever we do, we’ll charge $5 at the door and give all of the money, at the end of the night, to Fly Chirldren’s Art Center to fund their work in Ypsi schools.
And, yes, this is what I’ve chosen to write about tonight, rather than Romney’s Israel trip.

I’d like to see a historic reenactment of what was going on in the young Mark Maynard’s mind as he set out to write his first blog post. Perhaps Patrick Elkins could be persuaded to thin down his beard, put on a non-ironic shirt, and play the part.
Can we all just sit on the floor and watch you blog?
I think it should be held in Detroit where everyone can see what liberal policy does to a city. Just thought you would want to showcase your liberal work.
Or perhaps he could show Leni Riefenstahl propaganda films where everyone can see what right wing policy does to a country. Dick!

And I’d better see a goddamned reenactment of “She’s Gone”. I found my devil’s ears (misplaced after the move) and I have a cape and I’m ready to walk around the stage as you throw money at me. In fact, I will do that regardless of whether the video is remade.

A puppet version of the some of the most noteworthy/obnoxious/hilarious threads/arguments would be pretty cool. You could even build a scale model version of Ypsi City and the surrounding Township as the “stage”
I’m not sure I understand your comment, Koosh. Are you saying that Minus9 and 25 Suaves wouldn’t have played under the Garris regime. I believe both have played at various Garris-run bars. Or are you saying that Garris wouldn’t have allowed a fundraiser for a local non-profit, which he also has done on several occasions. Or are you saying that Garris wouldn’t have allowed Mark to host an event there, which he also did several times. Or are you just being a dick?

KJC, I know that some musicians, like Laith, don’t play there anymore. The last few times I dropped in at Woodruff’s, though, there was music. So, I don’t know that it was really an exodus. I don’t get the logic. Wouldn’t he be happy that bands were playing again?

I don’t get the logic either. That’s why I thought Koosh was referring to the decrease (is that fair enough?) in live music after Andy left, not you or your event.
More music seems to be happening at Woodruffs again, and I’m glad. I was sorry to see Laith leave, along with the jazz on Fridays and Sundays. I was helping WEMU update their events calendar and they had three regular shows a week on their calendar at Woodruff’s that don’t exist anymore. Plus at one time they were having bands nightly. I don’t know the players involved or what the change in management means. As far as I know everyone has happily moved on or they hate each other. I only pay attention to the music.
Laith made it sound on Facebook like he was walking away because of how Andy was treated by Sandee French, who owns the bar. I heard, however, that it was more mutual than that. Andy paid Laith several hundred dollars to play there every week, and, as I understand it, he didn’t always draw enough people to cover the guarantee. So, I think both parties were ready to let it go. I don’t know about the jazz shows. To be honest, I didn’t even know that they had jazz. My guess is that it didn’t make financial sense. Hasan is trying to make the bar financially viable, and, unfortunately, that means that a few things had to change. There is still live music, though.
Speaking of Romney’s disastrous trip to Europe, did you hear that his press secretary told reporters to “kiss (his) ass” at Poland’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw, after admonishing them to stop asking questions as, “This is a holy site for the Polish people”?

My understanding is that Peter Larsen was permanently banned from setting foot in the Elbow Room in very early 2002, but was actually granted full clemency under the Garris administration. But if he is really willing to perform, then that only leaves two members for the triumphant return of http://markmaynard.com/2010/08/the-legacy-of-prehensile-monkeytailed-skink/ which is clearly what the public really wants.
No one needs to hear Skink, as evidenced by their record sales.
As far as I know, all of Skink’s records have been sold out for 15 years. Are you confusing them with the MPT, Mr. X? Anyway, the return of 25 Suaves is plenty exciting for me, though I still hold out hope for an eventual Skink reunion. It could work like a loophole in the Monkey Power Trio rules, because if Pete is playing then it’s Skink, which as a band has no restrictions on performing live music in public.
