Remember that band, Manhole, that got run out of Ypsi after they illegally appropriated my face for an ill-fated line of leisurewear? Well, all the guys came back to town this last weekend, in hopes of acquiring stacks of free pancakes and selling poorly photocopied trading cards of themselves at Totally Awesome Fest 8. I shot some video of their performance, which, thanks to some cops who had nothing better to do, got moved into a basement, but, as the quality of the recording kind of sucks, I’ve decided not to share it here. I do, however, have another piece of Manhole related video that I can share… The following interview, with Manhole member Stevo “Doc” Doccerson, took place a few hours before said performance, at the request of Mr. Doccerson, who wanted to show off his new captain’s hat, and spin tall tales about the nautical life he’d become accustomed to over the past two months, since fleeing Michigan in the troll form. (Doccerson’s alter ego, for those of you who don’t know, is a renaissance fair performer by the name of Hob the Troll.) Here’s the interview, in which, among other things, Doccerson promises yet another Manhole reunion show in the near future, at which time their long-awaited record, he assures us, will finally be released.
Those who are curious as to what Manhug sounds like, can find a live recording of their Totally Awesome Fest set online, thanks to Daniel Peron. And, if, after that, you still feel as though you need more, you can find video of my interview with exiled leader of the Manhole cult, Hollis Knight Coats, here… I’m terrible at reviewing music, but, if I had to describe the music of Manhole, under the threat of death, I’d say that it’s kind of like what I’d expect if Jimmy Buffett killed Anton Newcombe, assumed his identity, and took over the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Even the trolls are leaving Michigan.
I’ve got a new header idea. A photo of Hob, with the tagline, “MarkMaynard.com – Our trolls are real.”

Steve, I didn’t see you at the show. I thought that you’d been kicked out of the band. I heard later, however, that you were there, but they had you playing in a different room from the rest of the band. Is that true?
The sexual tension is too great when Hollis and Doc perform in the same room.
There’s a rumor that Doc is the one that called the cops who showed up to shut down the outdoor portion of Totally Awesome Fest on Sunday. I’m not sure why he would do that, but I have a theory. Maybe he thought that he could better smell the band inside, in a confined space. I’ve heard that the thing he misses most about the band is the aggregate smell of his band mates.
Doc has fallen on hard times.
