Wanted poster issued for suspect in Downtown Ypsi burglary spree

Remember a few days ago, in that post about the late-night break-in at Beezy’s, I mentioned how the police had a suspect? Well, they released a name and photo today. The man’s name is Daniel Thomas Bewernitz. From what I understand, he’s 30, and just recently moved to Ypsi from Detroit. As of right now, it looks as though the authorities have enough evidence to charge him with the recent robberies of Dos Hermanos and the One Twenty Three Skate Shop (on N. Washington Street). While the police haven’t indicated that he’d charged in the Beezy’s burglary, I’m told that will likely happen as well, as evidence found in the search of his apartment seems to link him. According to AnnArbor.com, “State Department of Corrections records show Bewernitz was paroled Oct. 5, 2010, after being convicted in Wayne County of breaking and entering a building with intent and second-degree home invasion. He also has a conviction for malicious destruction of fire and police property.” The police caution that he might be armed, so, if you see him, you’d best call the authorities.

I also mentioned in my last post that I was concerned that downtown break-ins might be on the rise. Well, you’ll be pleased to know, that, according to police statistics, it’s not the case. In a letter released this afternoon, Chief of Police Amy Walker said that break-ins (which includes home invasions, business break-ins and attempts) have been decreasing for the past three years. Here are the year-to-date numbers, as of last week, through 2009. (note:This 2011 number does not reflect this last weekend’s burglaries.)

2011: 212
2010: 239
2009: 255

As for Bee, she seems to have a great attitude about the whole thing. If you didn’t catch it yesterday, here’s an excerpt from a note that she left on the site.

…(W)hat concerns me most as a HUMAN BEING living on this big ball of gas floating in space is… how do we prevent bad guys from doing bad things? We need better fixes, not just alarm systems and camera surveillance… we need treatment programs and a civilized society… we need to treat the problem not the symptoms. I feel empathy for the individual/s responsible for these crimes [and yes, I’d like to kick the shit out of them too, but] that their addled/addicted/damaged brain would even make these actions a means of “income” or survival for him/her.

So, back to fear… the world is a fucked up place. Ypsi is not unique in that. I’m not about to run off to some lily white pasture or feel chased out of business in Ypsi [regardless of being perceived as “hip” by some bloggers and some posters destined to fail]; I’m tough and I have a sense of place here- regardless of race, history, politics, triumphs or failures, past or present, this place chose me as home. So, hopefully I don’t say anything too stupid or too naive or too defensive, but I stand firmly in my beliefs in this community, in this world, that there is FAR more good than bad, that there is no magic bullet, and that bad guys are inevitable, but they ain’t gonna bring me down. And more of that please.

OK, how many of you thought that he’d be black? Come on, you can tell me.

I’m sure he’s a nice guy, and I’ll hold off on pronouncing him guilty until there’s a trial, but, Jesus, he looks like he was created in a laboratory. Did he smash through the walls of these businesses with his head?

I don’t mean this as disrespectful toward our troops, but I’m wondering if he could be former military. I had a friend who came back from the war in Iraq pretty messed up and got into trouble with the law. (He’s fine now, and that’s all behind him.) I’m wondering, given this guy’s look, if something similar might be happening here.

I don’t know, but I suspect that break ins downtown have decreased because there are less places to break in to. I don’t think that’s a stretch, though I stress that I have no information on how many businesses there are downtown now compared with the beginning of the 2008 economic crisis.

The most insidious black evil doers are the ones that appear to be white.

The photo up top, I’m guessing, is older than the one on the wanted poster, which you can find if you following the AnnArbor.com link above. In the photo on the wanted poster, he’s a fraction of this size. It also says that he’s a known drug addict. Given they way he’s withered, I’d say it’s meth.

How can you allow such open racist comments? I think I can find better company elsewhere, and I’m sure you’ll find a good replacement for me. Racism seems to be on fire the last couple of years, whats up with that?

I also know the man above,… The MAN is not black, a thing from another world, not former military, not addicted to meth, not withered & certainly NOT, Whoops, a black, illegal alien with anchor babies from multiple women… And as far as i know didn’t use his head to go bashing any windows…

And who the f**k are any of you to judge ANYONE but yourselves? As for Jane, I’d say someone has a personal problem with Mr. Bewernitz… But knowing Since I also know Mr. Bewernitz personally… He is a loved Son, Grandson, Brother, boyfriend, nephew, best friend, nephew, Cousin and father, who, had any of you ever had the pleasure to have met him… He’d stand tall, look you in your eye… Which if you live in ypsilanti or Ann Arbor… the people are to gutless to look anyone in the eye for fear of being found-out that “They too”… have skeletons in their closet… and not very pretty ones. Nonetheless… Daniel would treat you with respect, but would not hesitate to speak the truth. and the truth is hard to comeby these days. And by what i’m reading, i’m sure he’d then follow up with “the truth hurts, doesn’t it.” And it would hurt because you would deep down at your core know what he was saying was dead on… Daniel … yes, he has a name, has more courage and pride than ANY of you… Here’s an idea… Trade shoes with him for a day… An afternoon… An hour even… BETTER YET…. TRADE PLACES WITH THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE HIM… hell if u see him around because he is remakabely unforgettable… Stop and have a conversation with him… Ask him about anything… He’ll run circles around any of you… And i promise… You will walk away feeling like the cowards you already know you are. Soldier???? Oh… He’s a soldier alright… One that NEVER gives up or backs down… Isn’t it the meek who criticize the strong? Or something like that. But hell… What would i know??? I’m just someone who happens understand him… And am a better person for having him in my life. if you knew him… i’m sure in one way or another… you’ve learned from him as well… that EVERYONE has a story… Which truly makes us all the same…

Try this… instead of staring at the sidewalk pretending you dont see the person 2 feet from your face…. the Next time you are walking down the street… Stand up tall, hold your chin up, and look each person you pass right in their eyes… And just Try… Like, really try…to pretend you are even half the man he is. I’d bet my life on it… NONE of you could do it and you’ld break… and certainly none of you could do it in quite the same way he does… You see… He HAS his words to stand on… And if you happen to see a girl on his arm… Thats me… And by all means… Please introduce yourself… I’ve got a thing or two i’d like to say. He’s the shy one… I’m the firecracker to watch out for! You see… We know when its appropriate to use our WORDS.

Thanks… I’m sure His family, friends, relatives & girlfriend would really appreciate it. He is loved!

Farah I wonder if you still feel the same way ? Since you are no longer with him .. He is not the man you have described at all. Drugs have taken a hold on him and he won’t walk away from them no matter what he loses . He never did learn from this or 7 years in prison. He chose to commit this same crime again and I’m sure will be heading to prison yet again . He is no father either as he hasn’t seen his daughter in I don’t know how many years . Drugs have consumed his whole life . He lies , steals and sadly had told the lies for so long he actually believes his own lies . His mom is his main enabler . In spite of all this he thinks he is somehow a higher class then anyone around him . He is homeless and on the run from the police but he is convinced he’s a better person than most . He doesn’t care who he hurts with his actions nor thinks about how it affects anyone around him . Very curious to see how you would defend him now . Maybe at this point you may know the real him now . He’s definetly a charmer when he wants to be and is very manipualitive .
