I’m trying not to be paranoid, but I received the following email today…

I should probably be upset that the folks at City Hall are just leaving my personal information up on their screens, for anyone to see, but, at the moment, I’m more curious as to why they’d been looking at my information to begin with. Could it be that they’re having me tracked? Could it be that, without any real threat of student activism to speak of, and with a habitually underachieving population of Muslim extremists, I’m the most attractive target they’ve got for surveillance? I mean, it must be hard to have a huge surveillance infrastructure, like we have here in the United States, and not be able to use it, right? I can see how you might want to try it out. It’s only natural. To not use it would be like having a shiny, new, industrial-sized can of pepper spray, and keeping it in its holster. And, where’s the fun in that?

Maybe it was someone’s awful idea of a joke?

Is there a way through freedom of information or a lawyer or detective to see if someone is actually following your activities?

It wasn’t just any computer, that’s our new Scapegoat 5000. It selected you as the individual most likely to take the blame should Ypsi go bankrupt, get an Emergency Financial Manager, etc. Sorry we left it up on the screen, but the members of City Council love seeing it.

You should have known, that moment that you stepped into Hasan’s bed, that it would end like this. You’re a marked man, Maynard.

Obviously the fuzz monitor this website, I had been threatened personally from them a couple years back for a party I was throwing which was listed here. You’re pinko scum to them Maynard, and you attract other un-American slime which have to be watched for homeland security’s sake. Didn’t you know? Its ok anyhow, privacy is a thing of the past. It was a thing prior to the internet, but because of the pandemic of mental illness associated with the desire to be famous, as well as the pandemic of existential vacuum associated with our nihilistic technological age, humans gave it up themselves.

To your point about privacy being a thing of the past, Thom, I just happened across a story while eating lunch this afternoon about the growing prevalence of license plate readers along the thoroughfares of America. It would appear, according to the ACLU, that soon the State will know where we are at all times.

Now the rest of you can be paranoid too.

ACLU: License Plate Scanners Are Logging Citizen’s Every Move: It has now become clear that this automated license plate readers technology, if we do not limit its use, will represent a significant step toward the creation of a surveillance society in US
