Somewhere between 400 and 1,000 people have shown up for tonight’s Occupy Detroit meeting

Apparently the webcast didn’t pan out as planned, but organizers hope to have video up after the fact. In the meantime, I just wanted to note how incredibly cool it is that on a night like tonight, when both the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers have big games, so many people turned out for this meeting that they had to take it outside. I don’t know about you, but I’m finding all of this incredibly inspiring.

update: According to what I’m hearing there’s consensus that the big protest will be on October 14th, at 4:00, at Spirit of Detroit, to coincide with the President’s scheduled visit. Participants will then march to Grand Circus, where people will convene at 6:00.

update: For future news, check out the Occupy Detroit forum.

The response from someone on Facebook to the claim that last night’s event was unorganized:

There are NO leaders in this…
TONIGHT … was ONLY the 1st meeting….please please keep this in mind….
If there had been NO agenda… how would THAT have gone? Not very well I imagine… how do we set an agenda without a PLACE to meet? a place to hold our demonstrations, conversations etc? I dont understand how anyone could see a problem with ALL of us (who were at the meeting tonight) setting a location FIRST … thennnnn ALLLLLL of us coming together to set OUR agenda….
People SHOULD realize that the church tonight was given to us for FREE but we had a TIME LIMIT and there was no way that over 300 ppl could speak in just 2 hours…but once we “Occupy” Grand Circus Park… WE WILL BE THERE FOR 24 HOURS! if you want to move to another location … THAT IS WHEN WE WILL ALL HAVE THE TIME IN THE WORLD TO DISCUSS IT… if you want to change the name of this movement… WE WILL BE THERE FOR 24 HOURS….tonight…we ONLY had 2 hours….if you think something wasnt addressed tonight… WE WILL BE IN GRAND CIRCUS PARK for 24 hours…. THAT IS WHEN WE WILL ALL HAVE THE TIME TO DISCUSS…. EVERYTHING!!!!!
tonight… we simply did not have THAT kind of time…
But even with the so called negativity I see being said on FAKEBOOK… TONIGHT WAS GREAT!!!!!! and I look forward to FRIDAY!!!

I am in another country at the moment , so will not be at any ‘Occupy X’ for any value in Michigan. I will be in NYC next week, and may stop by the protest.

I am kind of wondering what we are trying to accomplish with the “Occupy X” protest if X is not NYC. Are they primarily going to be tools to organize local support/supporters? Can they be used to funnel money/support to the people in Zucotti park?

I went to the Ann Arbor meeting, which was mostly a sounding board for a Nurses union dispute with the University.

It was great to see a large crowd out.

    Mark,

I should have, but did not. I should have gone to the Ypsi event, but did not. I never figure out things are going on until they are over.

    Can you post some pictures?

    Pete
