Remember my friend Andy, who I interviewed at the Shadow Art Fair about his disdain for the current rock scene and subsequent love for metal? Well, as I discovered today, he also reviews books. Here he is, reviewing The Implosion of Aggie Winchester by Lara Zielin.
Actually, it’s not really Andy’s review. From what I can tell, he just took the Kirkus review for the book and put it to music – I believe with the blessing of the book’s author.

I really enajoyed Andy’s attempt at literary, uh, “criticism,” but can’t help wonder if may be his TRUE calling might be in the area of political punditry.
With Keith Olberman’s spot still semi-open at MSNBC, I’m sure Andy’s style of *reportage* might be nearly perfectly suited to the current zeitgeist in Washington — and only slightly less angry and unintelligible.
Fuck punditry, Glen. He should go right into electoral politics.

The video was shot by Lara Zielins’ husband Rob Hess who both work with my wife. Lara and Rob have done great promotional videos before, they even got Glen S to smash a Kindle like a crazy man in one. The review seemed a bit over the top so they threw around some ideas for it and the above is what hatched.
I wrote the music and recorded it all in GarageBand using the built in amps like “Heavy Riffing” and “Hair Metal”. That was really the fun part for me. My drummer from my band Minus9 laid down the drummers for it in about an hour. If you want to see what our band normally sounds like click on my name.
I played the character thinking how frustrating this guys job must be to have to read and review books written for teenage girls. Of course it “oozes with angst”, teens love that shit. Seventeen magazine gave it a good review and that’s who really counts.
Is there such a thing as “white metal,” and, if so, is it any good?
