Rachel Maddow on the closing of Detroit’s Catherine Ferguson Academy

I was wondering why we were getting so many new comments on our thread about the Detroit public school for pregnant young women that’s being closed. Well, it looks like we got a shout out on Rachel Maddow’s website… Here’s the segment that accompanied the link.

I wonder how long it will be before Maddow opens an office in Michigan. It seems as though most of her stories these days are about the Snyder administration and their plans to “reinvent” Michigan as a free market utopia where those too poor to afford private school are warehoused in 60-kid classrooms, teachers are demonized, and community parks are transformed into for-profit, beachfront golf clubs.

I know this isn’t probably the place to interject humor, but I do find it somewhat amusing that the Tea Partiers who voted for Snyder did so because they were wary of Democrats and their “big government” aspirations. It’s hard to imagine what could be any more “big government” than discharging locally elected officials, appointing czars in their place, and forcing the sale of publicly-owner common spaces to for profit corporations. But, I’m sure the Republicans will surprise us all by moving the battle lines even farther to the right. I wouldn’t be surprised if, a year from now, we’re talking about the forced sterilization of welfare recipients.

[Thanks to Jim E for bringing this to my attention.]

We’re taking the national spotlight away from Wisconsin. I feel kind of bad about that.

Our collective attention should be on all of the attacks against democracy. It looks like the “tea party” governors are putting an all out assault on democracy. I am truly frightened about all of the things that are going on. The Catherine Ferguson school idea has been one of my long term dreams. God bless these people for doing what they are doing. Just because you make a mistake doesn’t mean your life has too be over. I want to find a way to help. I am very disgusted that this has come down to race and class warfare. We all have something to contribute to this country. Greed has taken a hold of the top 2%. How much money is too much money? If you have more money than God now what? They cannot take it with them. We need collectively to band together and “fight” back these attacks. This is not the country I grew up in. I do not want to live in a country where the goal is to “crush” the less fortunate. I do not have the answers but would like to really “take back” our country. That means everyone! If I can be of any help I am here for the cause. Respectfully, Crystal

Boy O Boy! You read from the script don’t you? “a free market utopia where those too poor to afford private school”. So why do all the liberals with any money left send their kids to private school to learn the “value” of “public education”?

“Tea Partiers who voted for Snyder.” Snyder can’t brew tea with hot water and a bag of leaves.

“forcing the sale of publicly-owner common spaces to for profit corporations.” That’s the definition of getting rid of big government. “Publicly-owned” is the left’s code word for excessive taxation, aka “publicly owned” health care, education, regulation, and souls.

” I wouldn’t be surprised if, a year from now, we’re talking about the forced sterilization of welfare recipients.” I’ll be surprised if we’re still talking about “welfare” at all in a year from now.

Democracy is being reborn Crystal. I’m disgusted too that this is being framed as class warfare. I’m more disgusted that you follow that by a class attach on “the top 2%.” (How disgusted are you really?) You want to know what “crushes” the humanity of the less fortunate? Treating them like infants who need governments teat. We are taking back our country. You can be of help if you take the time to realize who’s taken it.

Interview Part 3: Gov. Rick Snyder

So, the people get paid more in the private sector? Sacrifice isn’t shared by his people? You have to pay for talent? Sheesh.

We should invite her to broadcast from Ypsi sometime. The Dreamland could host.
