I was with it until she said she couldn’t afford a dishwasher. Come on now. But for the record, our house is 860 sq ft (2 bed, 1 bath) and I drive a used Yaris. We do have a stripper room though.
I think people would be OK paying teachers a good wage if there were considerably fewer of them, which is the direction I think we’re headed in. We’ll have a dozen or so teachers in each region, and they’ll broadcast their lessons over Comcast, right into the homes of students. The whole thing will be funded by advertising dollars. Kids from homes without televisions will be taken to warehouses to watch their lessons, under the protective eye of armed security guards. The whole thing will be very efficient.
Yeah, I see us going to more and more “on line” education which sucks for the students I teach both because they are special ed and because they don’t have computers or home internet access! And even if they did, how chaotic are some of the homes?!
Really, what we need to do is just get rid of schools. The Bible was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for today’s kids. We need to work on preparing kids to be killed publicly, not to work for a living.
Community colleges have long moved towards distance learning. Sometimes I think it can be effective, but mostly it just cheapens the whole learning process, and reduces it to clicking the right button so that you can move on to the next page.
Administrators love it, because they can bring in lots of cheap adjuncts rather than hire full time faculty, and still achieve schoolwide standardization.
Am I the only one who got here by binging “pubic teat”? If there are others, perhaps we could start a conversation here.
I can’t tell you how many people I have had to teach the meaning of “felch” to. I don’t mean by doing it but by explaining it. A friend lives on Felch and I kept making cracks about it and after like a year, he’s like, “What?” and then I explained it.
Pete–don’t get me started on the whole adjunct thing!!! My friend does that for a living and it’s not much of a living :(
Patti – I did it. The work is good, but the pay sucks! $1200 (total) for a three credit, 15 week class!
It’s a free maketer’s dream, the college doesn’t have to be burdened by pesky things like fair wage and benefits, yet still provide the same services.
