Reading the Iliad with my daughter

achillesI had wanted to write about the Glenn Beck fan they call the Progressive Hunter, and his recently foiled plan to start a revolution in the United States by killing liberals in San Francisco, but I ended up staying up too late, reading The Iliad with Clementine. I know it might be a little out of her league, but I figure that she’s got to learn about the futility of human existence, murder, suicide, infidelity, the cruelty war, and the petty narcissism of the gods sooner or later. So, why not start at the source? I’d rather have her learn about it from Homer than from FOX News.

Back to Byron “Progressive Hunter” Williams, if you haven’t heard, he was arrested earlier this summer after a 20 minute gun battle with police. Williams was well armed, and wearing body armor at the time. In a jailhouse interview, he stated that his intention was to start a revolution in San Francisco by “killing people of importance at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU,” both of which, not surprisingly, play prominently in the conspiracy theories drawn out on Glenn Beck’s FOX News blackboard. Beck, according to Williams, was “like a teacher” to him. “Beck,” according to Williams, “would never say anything about a conspiracy, would never advocate violence. He’ll never do anything… of this nature. But he’ll give you every ounce of evidence that you could possibly need.” Beck got off easy this time, in that Williams was brought down, wounding only two officers in the process. Next time, we might not be so lucky.

    That’s great!

I tried introducing Moby Dick to my daughter, but as a newborn she lacked the attention span for even its short chapters. Now that she’s 2, I may try again this winter. Since she’s starting to put together sentences, I figure that she might as well learn to put together sentences well, and Melville was a master.

I’ve always wondered when to introduce the concept of suicide to children.

In related news, a Jon Stewart was found rationally mulling over alternatives this morning.

Today might be a good day to send a letter to Mr. Beck’s advertisers.

When he gets out of jail, he should get a reality show on FOX. Progressive Hunter could come on after COPS.

If you want to teach her about the futility of human existence, murder, suicide, infidelity, the cruelty war, and the petty narcissism of the god(s) you should also rrad her the Old Testament.

The Beatles weren’t responsible for Charlie Manson, and Beck isn’t responsible for this guy. You, however, are responsible, should your daughter start slaying people from the back of a dog pulled chariot.
