The Refuse Stealing Kukana Kuba Band

As I’ve mentioned here before, my friend Pete has been in the African country of Malawi these past several weeks, conducting scientific research in support of his PhD thesis. Fortunately for those of us who care about Pete, he’s been blogging about his adventures, and I’ve found his posts absolutely fascinating, as they delve into subjects as diverse as the proper preparation of field mice for human consumption and the jury rigged musical instruments played by street musicians. And, now that he’s back in the states, we’re starting to see videos, like this incredible one of the Refuse Stealing Kukana Kuba Band.

You should watch it. It’s really beautiful stuff. I lack the words to describe it sufficiently. The best I can manage is to say that they’re like the Flat Duo Jets, only in Africa, and without either the amps or the youthful American bravado. I can’t help but watch this video of Pete’s and think about this.

The internet is occasionally a wonderful place. Things like this make all the other nonsense almost bearable. Thank you, Pete.

Do they refuse to steal? Or do they steal refuse?

I loved the Flat Duo Jets, but what does this have to do with them? Dude’s homebrew kit is more like Pussy Galore. Only without the psychotic American snarl:

Awesome Jets clip, though – reminds me of the original Bantam Rooster duo lineup, circa Deal Me In (just to bring it back home to Michigan). I first saw both of these bands at the Blind Pig, anyhow.

If the Michigan Roots people agree to fly these guys in, I’ll personally hunt down Jam Yo Momma and return him to his loved ones.
